Spicers Vineyards Estate, Sydney, Australia – Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"How did it strike you on arrival? Set among rolling grape vines and native bush, boutique hotel Spicers Vineyards Estate is about a two hours’ drive north of Sydney in the Hunter Valley wine region— just far enough for a long weekend away. Not content to be a romantic, gourmet getaway (the dining program here is top-notch), the retreat is also a pampering destination: detox in style at Spa Anise, then retox with a sampling of the hotel's wines. Nice. What’s the crowd like? Spicers attracts a chic tribe of guests from home and abroad, including young couples and yummy families. A great weekend break for Sydney foodies, it’s also an ideal base for international visitors keen to sample the Hunter’s liquid charms. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The hotel's 12 guest rooms and suites sit between the property's eight-acre vineyard and natural bush—so when you look out your window, it'll feel more like a real escape, and less like you have to go back to work on Monday. Each unit features a wood-burning fireplace for cooler days, along with an ensuite spa bath. Ground-floor King Spa Rooms have French doors opening to a shared veranda, or scenic views from the first floor; luxury spa Ssites have separate living areas, with a spa bath and rain shower, plus a private courtyard or balcony for views of the vines. Families and large groups of friends should book the four-bedroom Vineyard’s House for its spacious living, dining, and bar areas, along with its kitchen, wraparound veranda, barbecue, fire pit and large pool. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? Eco-friendly Australian Appelles toiletries are cool enough to want to slip into your bag. Techy in-room extras include Vittoria or Nespresso coffee machines, flatscreen TVs, as well as a Bluetooth stereo in the standalone house, and WiFi is free. Room service: Worth it? Blessedly, room rates include breakfast, which you can request to be served in your boudoir. Also, keep in mind that the on-site restaurant's chefs are off on Mondays and Tuesdays. Fortunately, the alternative—dinner hampers packed with house-made pickles, pâté, Hunter Valley brie, and a few others treats, and delivered up to your room—is plenty satisfying. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why? British chef Matthew Bremerkamp showcases the Hunter’s gorgeous seasonal produce at Restaurant Botanica, harvesting ingredients from the hotel’s vegetable and herb garden. Modern Australian yet regional, the food—think wild-caught New Zealand langoustine, served with gnocchi and prawn butter chili, and Wagyu beef cheek with goats curd, peas, mint, and tomato—is joined by an award-winning wine list, including bottles from the hotel's private vineyard and wine cellar. Try the small-harvest Chardonnay—the grapes are grown right in the hotel's own paddock out front. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. Restaurant Botanica's earthy vibes and airy terrace, which offers views over the Brokenback Mountain Range, are major draws. But the food is up to par, too: book ahead to feast on two- or three-course dinners, or the signature tasting menu with optional wine pairing. A guest lounge with an open fireplace encourages convivial chats among the hotel's few privileged guests, though you can also spend time playing bocce in the garden or lolling in the outdoor swimming pool and hot spa. If you'd rather bond over glasses of vino, Spicers' team can recommend expert-led private winery tours where you'll visit boutique and established cellar-doors for tastings. Bottom line: worth it, and why? All told, this elegant estate is a magical spot for discovering the Hunter Valley." - Sophie Davies

Wow, what a fantastic experience at Spicers Vineyards Estates! I came here with my partner to celebrate his birthday and the incredible team at Spicers did whatever they could to make our experience special. The staff were so kind, welcoming, accommodating and helpful. The property and room were fantastic too. The best place for a quiet recharge away from the city. For us, the real star of the show was the wonderful team behind it all. I’ll definitely be staying with Spicers again in the future. Thank you for everything team ♥️

We arrived at 10pm. It was raining and cold. The property reception was locked with a sign with a phone number to call for emergencies. I figured not being able to check in was worthy of a call. A polite member of staff informed me that they were in the Guesthouse and would be over in 15 minutes. ||That wasn’t what I’d expect from a 5 star hotel but not to worry. We got into our room. It is quite aged, in need of a renovation. But again, not to worry. ||However, the experience got significantly worse when I went downstairs to ask where to go for breakfast. The staff member rudely explained that the breakfast that I paid an extra $120 for was already in the room the night before. It was two pieces of bread, some jam and two packets of cereal. I don’t eat bread/gluten. The restaurant was apparently closed for renovations and allegedly they tried (on several occasions I was rudely told) to contact Expedia to inform me but because I’m somehow a lesser guest for booking through Expedia, they didn’t pass me the message so too bad for me / don’t use a booking agent. ||I asked for a refund for today’s breakfast but agin was snapped at saying “no”. ||It’s not so much about the restaurant being closed, not being informed when I booked, the aged room etc, it’s the service (or lack of) that can let any place down.

A Perfect Start to Our Marriage Unforgettable Experience at Spicers Vineyard Estate After leaving the Kingsley in Newcastle, where we had our wedding reception the night before, we headed to Spicers Vineyard Estate for our second night as a married couple. From the moment we arrived, we were incredibly impressed by the level of service, comfort, and attention to detail. We were warmly greeted at reception, and the staff immediately assisted with our bags insisting we didn’t lift a finger. When we arrived at our suite, we were welcomed by a cozy open fire and a complimentary bottle of champagne waiting for us, which was such a thoughtful touch. Not only that, but the team also arranged a light snack so we could relax by the fire before heading to our dinner reservation. At dinner, the staff once again made us feel special by congratulating us on our marriage and offering complimentary drinks as we browsed the beautifully curated menu. Every detail of our stay was exceptional from the luxurious Leif Buddha Wood hand soap to the heated floors, towel racks, and the indulgent double spa bath. It’s clear that a great deal of care has gone into creating a space that is both luxurious and welcoming. We want to sincerely thank the management and staff for making us feel so cared for during such a meaningful time. We’ll absolutely be back for future special occasions and will be recommending Spicers Vineyard Estate to all our friends and family. I would highly recommend future brides and grooms to consider Spices Vineyard State as a venue for their wedding reception. It’s an exceptional location that offers a beautiful and memorable setting for such a special occasion.

After coming here for many many years it’s sad to see the decline in quality. The rooms need an upgrade and at the very least they should provide proper feather dooners instead of the blankets that weigh a tonne and provide little warmth. I stayed 2 nights and was disappointed overall. The staff are wonderful but for the cost it’s certainly not worth it. We had a neighbour deciding to have a spa at 11pm last night and we heard the tub being filled and emptied at 1am. How is it that we can hear every bit of plumbing in a resort of this standard?? To say we had a crap sleep is an understatement. I hear it is now owned by PE firm. They need to invest serious capital into this place. Carpet was dirty. Bathrooms outdated. Furniture needs updating as well. Won’t be coming back in a hurry.

Amazing stay at Spicers. Great facilities, really helpful staff who could not do enough for us. Would recommend taking the e-bikes for a spin to a few local vineyards for a wine tasting.

The service is poor, with staff training desperately needed. |The hotel ran out of some popular wine, with no plausible explanation as to why. ||The breakfast menu had sausages on several dishes. They were out of sausages for several days. ||The hotel did not supply newspapers, even when requested. ||We had wine glasses (given as a gift) removed from our room by house services with No explanation as to why. It was an effort to retrieve them. ||The Hotel markets themselves 5 Star accomodation. It’s a long way off 5 Star. We will not be returning there.

Pete has been an amazing host throughout our stay in Spicers. Botanica restaurant is closed for renovation and he had to drive us to the neighbouring restaurants. Not easy especially he has to accommodate every guests. Thank you Pete, we will come back again because of you. Not to mention the fire you put for us just before we come back and the map.

Staff are great. Unobtrusive but always there to help. The Spa was amazing. Definitely book in a treatment. Bed, shower and bath first class. Fire place was great.

Yelp
Understand this is a get-away in a pricey area, and its at the top of the its mark in terms of service and offerings... you will get a lot for your money, but you will spend a lot to get it. We had a wide variety of places to visit and travel to in our quick 2 weeks down under, but this was one of those locations I decided to splurge on our trip and spend 2 days exploring Hunter Valley. You could do a lot worse. The estate is quiet, the wine is not even sold like other places here, its so small you have to belong to buy, but there is no cellar door. The food was AMAZING, truly. The service was excellent, the staff was friendly, offering after hours cell contact and all the amenities you could want. The room had but a few minor issues, like the upstairs noise was a lot more than promised, and the stairway next to our room as quite loud, so reserve upper if you can. But it was luxurious, plenty of space, fireplace pre set up with wood, and heated everything, floors and towel bars and a private patio to enjoy. The local animals were always present and a nice country add to our quite stay, in room pests were not welcome and reported but there is only so much you can do about them, so that is something they can do to earn a 5... mind you not much more as they are very close to it already. Worth the stay if you want to have a bit of luxury, but be prepared- its going to be one of the more expensive places in the area.

Yelp
Feels like a recently built guesthouse. It's a really good hotel. It's small, so you don't bump into many other guests. It was full on the weekend we went up to the Hunter Valley and we felt like we were the only ones there. It has a restaurant onsite called Botanica which has excellent food. We arrived on the Friday night from Sydney and service was excellent on checkin, as was the cocktail on arrival (they send cocktails out to all the rooms at about 5 or 6pm. We stayed for a couple of nights and had breakfast in the restaurant each morning which was very well done. A good selection of their food is grown onsite, and they also have some pigs onsite as well for restaurant use. I really like that, making it as local as possible. We also had inroom dining on the night we arrived and it was very well presented - usually inroom dining tends to be bumpy and cool by the time you get it. Inroom dining from Spicers is hand carried from the restaurant and very professional. It's easy to get to and it's local to most of the Hunter (with a car). The guesthouse has some nice features - pool, very large checkers and chess set and also a massage place onsite. Will be going back.

Yelp
The room's facilities and furnishings are exemplary - we couldn't want for more as far as physical comforts. But how can we get totally immersed in the 'tranquility' promised on the website (and their own Do Not Disturb cards) when every step and move made by upstairs guests in and out of the room is thundered through our room? There was nothing extraordinary about the people staying above us; they were just at times early risers, late sleepers and restless walkers. The flimsiness of the isolation between our room and the one above is the sole aspect of our stay that has impacted my rating of our accommodation, and meant we are unlikely to consider staying at this property in the future. For Spicers to promote the 'Relaxed Luxury' of this property, when the ability of a guest to relax is so dependent on which room they get (and if there's an occupant above), smacks of crossing fingers and hoping for the best.
