How Chai Pani Is Transforming Asheville’s Food Scene - AFAR

"What grew organically out of the restaurants is Spicewalla, a specialty spice business launched in 2017 that offers small‑batch, high‑quality spices and blends (more than 150 proprietary items) used in the kitchens and sold to home cooks worldwide; the brand quickly saw huge success, now exports globally, and embodies Irani’s idea that “spices transport you.”" - AFAR

Just received my second order from Spicewalla. Have used some of all the spices in my first order and was very pleased (and the clean plates/cups that accompanied what I cooked with the mixtures were an added bonus). Everything is well packaged and packed, the spices are rich and fresh, and the value received is excellent. Very quick order turnaround. Looking forward to my next order.

Indulge yourself by picking up an array of spices from Spicewalla! Since my first box arrived I have been so impressed with the amazing quality of Spicewalla's spices. Unsuspecting friends and family will come over to the house only to find a tray of spices for them to taste. There is a VAST difference between run of the mill brands you buy at a grocery store and these from Spicewalla! Get ordering! You will NOT be disappointed!

Oh what joy! My box of spices arrived today. Everything smells fabulous. Love the tins and the fact that they are refillable. I'm fundamentally lazy but love good food so, for me, the premixed options are perfect. Thanks Spicewalla for brightening my day and kitchen. Now, what to cook for dinner...

I had a bad experience with just about every part of my purchase. After buying 10 lbs of poppy seeds for baking, the first thing I learned was that it would be two weeks before they could process my order- could they not have indicted that there was going to be a delay before I finalized the order? The seeds I received were nasty and smelled. I hazarded to taste some and they tasted just as bad. Due to my dissatisfaction with my purchase, I reached out to Spicewalla to request a refund, or at the least, let them know about my poor experience. I have yet to receive any acknowledgment . My advice would be to steer clear and choose an established and reputable purveyor.

As a Carolinas-born lover of quality spices, I’ve been a Spicewalla fan since their early days. I read the newsletters, watch the cooking videos, and cook like crazy with the products. But they’ve made some questionable changes to their business model that I cannot abide. Until recently, customers could order spices in the attractive metal tins and also order refills by the bag. Refills present an economical, environmentally sensible solution. But they nixed the refills. Because the unit price for the tinned spices is substantially higher, Spicewalla products now break the bank for my household. If I’m making a BBQ rub, I might go through an entire tin in one go! Plus, I’ve got now got this empty tin to deal with. I wrote the company. They said the decision to eliminate refills is environmentally sound, because the paper sachets have plastic lining. This is true, but when you open the tins, guess what? The spices are packaged in… plastic. Oh, but they also tell me the tins are recyclable. Yet they are magnetic, which suggests they are not aluminum, which suggests they are not recyclable. But they are at least reusable, one might argue. Yes. They were at one time reusable… for refills of spices! It feels like, whatever their justification, this company is abandoning the principles that made it awesome. Where they started as a brand respected by home cooks and commercial kitchens, they are shifting to the boutique markets frequented by bougie wine moms who need to buy a last-minute gift for their neighbor to prove they visited Asheville. Fortunately I have other options because capitalism. Penzey’s sources quality spices, and all their products ship in glass containers. Plus there’s a great spice vendor a few towns over who will fill tare containers. Lucky me, I have all these empty tins!

I'd been wanting to place an order for awhile and I finally did. Only wish I did sooner. I got the chai masala and tandoori masala and you can smell how fresh and potent the spices are without opening the tins, which are super cute by the way! The chai blend (you add your own black tea) is the best I've ever tried and reminds me of chai I've had on my travels in India. I have not used the tandoori blend yet but if it tastes half as good as it smells then any dish made with it will be golden! I love that they have a pickup option for us locals.

Tried the sicilian pizza herb in red packet. Used yummy Mids sauce, Walmart crust. Was not good. Tasted like dirt. Like real dirt! I’m still going to try the chicken and pork one, though! Update… did not care for chicken… didn’t want to try pork… :(

It was the dark ages. I was collecting and storing spices and herbs as if they were bottles of wine in a cellar. Vintage paprika, aged cayenne...time had eroded away any semblance of pungency . My taste buds grew callous, indifferent, and unaffected by their lackluster flavor. Then there was light... brought to my doorstep in the form of a tidy package with “Spicewalla” labeling. Cayenne pungent enough to bring tears to one’s eyes. A Golden Milk concoction so exotic and so sumptuous that I now know how the ancients must have felt in the early days of the spice trade. Dill weed, coriander, and cumin with such gusto like none I had ever experienced before. It was dark until a light beam shone its way into my life and that light was Spicewalla.
