T+L's Hotel Review of Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch, South Africa

"I visited the Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch, South Africa; it reopened in March 2025 after an extensive renovation and is part of Spier Wine Farm. The design of the 80 rooms and suites prioritizes comfort, featuring plush linens, wooden furnishings, gas fireplaces, and a curated selection of artworks." - Heather Richardson Heather Richardson Heather Richardson is a journalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. "Around since 1692, Spier is one of the oldest and best-known wineries in Stellenbosch. Not only does this historic estate continue to receive accolades for its wine, it’s also become a hot spot for travelers thanks to its family-friendly atmosphere. Visitors can easily spend anywhere from a couple hours to an entire day enjoying all the activities Spier has to offer, from picnics on the lawn overlooking the Eerste River to self-guided walking tours of the property. There’s also a farm-to-table restaurant on-site, as well as an outdoor playground for children. For something unique, book the “Eagle Encounter” program to learn how the estate rehabilitates wounded birds and uses them for natural pest control, or take an evening Segway tour of the vineyards, followed by a sunset tasting among the vines."

We stayed at Spier Hotel for just one night during our honeymoon — and we truly wish we had stayed longer. The estate is absolutely stunning and serene, perfect for winding down. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and even had a cozy fireplace. We had a good dinner at the restaurant, a good opportunity to pair with the wine they produce and took full advantage of the amazing spa with a 60-minute massage — one of the best spa experiences I’ve ever had. There’s also wine tasting and other relaxing activities on site. A peaceful, elegant escape. Strongly recommend!

We had a wonderful, though too short, one-night stay at Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch. |The room was clean, bright, and beautifully designed, with a lovely bathroom featuring a great shower and heated floors. A real treat in winter. |The turn-down service was a nice touch, and the mini fridge was generously stocked with snacks, soft drinks, beers, and Spier wines. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. I only wish we had booked at least two nights to fully enjoy the experience. Definitely planning to return.

Exceptional hospitality experience. We had a very special couples getaway. Friendly staff, amazing rooms with all amenities included. The bar and Veld restaurant were a treat. A lot of activities on-site. Do not miss out on the amazing spa. Perfect for couples and families. Would love to visit again.

Absolutely breathtaking weekend away. Rooms, service and facilities were perfect. The staff are friendly, attentive and see to your every wish. They are an absolute plus to the establishment. Steeped in history and untouched the lamdscape is breathtaking. The food was outstanding and caters for different tastes. Will definitely be back.

I've lived in Cape Town most my life and have visited Spier many times, but it had been a few years since my last visit. I was blown away with the renovations, attention to details, the firendliest most thoughtful staff, the coziest rooms with amazing snacks! Veld restuarant served up some of th emost delicious meals I have had (and I just returned from Italy and France). If youre a local looking for a getaway that has it all, Spier is it! If you're a foreigner looking to expience the best of South Africa, Spier is it! Farmwalks, river walks, picnics, spa, kids fun, deli, restuarants and accomodation.... simply the best!

I attended a conference during a very cold winter at Spier. The conference space was absolutely beautiful, very interesting paintings on the wall with comfortable seating and lounging area. The cuisine included gluten free, vegetarian as well as low fodmap options. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Both the meeting spaces had a fireplace going. This was an excellent conference experience.

Every inch of the property is like a curated work of art, from the beautiful buildings, kitchen, and grounds, to the eclectic art. It is so meticulously cared for that every detail was perfect, not a spot out of place, yet they maintained a relaxed atmosphere. ||The Spier staff members were warm and inviting and provided exceptional service, especially:||Veronica - concierge||Quenton - restaurant server ||Stephanie - massage ||Sommelier- (wine experience)||||The food and wine were delicious. Rooms were sparkling clean and restocked often. Loved the biscuits!
