Port Pirie Barnacle Bill – Port Pirie, Australia - Gastro Obscura

"Should you feel a divine call, a baptismal awakening, while you bite into the crisp breading of a fried barramundi at Barnacle Bill, giving in to the pleasure of buttery, tender white flesh dipped in a zingy tartar sauce, don’t be alarmed. It could be that your Barnacle Bill “sea chest,” a box of fried seafood and french fries, is a crumb-coated blessing. Or, it could well be the ambient holiness of your dining establishment, for this branch of the popular South Australian fish-and-chip chain is housed in Port Pirie’s oldest stone church. The church spires loom over Barnacle Bill’s logo of a portly sailor balancing a tray of fish on one hand and a ship’s wheel on the other. Outside the main entrance, instead of Bible study times on a church sign, a banner advertises the lunch specials. Barnacle Bill has been operating a chain of franchise seafood outlets in South Australia since 1970. The Port Pirie location was formerly a Congregational church, which opened its doors in 1879. After shutting its doors around 1991, the church lay abandoned, gathering dust for five years, and was about to be razed to the ground when the current owners, Kevin and Kim Spirou, bought the building and converted it into a Barnacle Bill franchise. The Spirous now like to boast that many of their customers once got married at the outlet’s former avatar. The pulpit is now a deep-frying counter, the pews have been replaced by tables and a salad bar, and one of the side aisles accommodates refrigerators for the restaurant’s beverages. But the faithful still come to this sacred seafood space. There was some initial concern among locals about turning a longstanding religious institution into a restaurant, but the critics soon realized that this was the only way to save the building, which would otherwise have been torn down. As for the seafood, saying that it’s good is just preaching to the choir. Know Before You Go The restaurant is open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m." - Rohini Chaki

This place is awesome! So good and fresh seafood to die for! Staff were amazing, we dined in and in no time they had set up for a family of six adults and two kids and ultra quick service, the food was in front of us in no time! We had everything from fish and chips to chicken and the fresh home made salads were exceptional! Totally recommend and a great experience. Even old pops was able to get a beer at lunchtime. Fantastic friendly staff, very good value and service. Can see this being a regular haunt to look forward to when visiting Port Pirie.

Google
Great place to visit ots very interesting and a great redevelopment of a iconic place that would have been destroyed. The barramundi was good the calamari, garfish and butterfish was ok but would never order it again. The prawns were good but the chips were quite average. Would eat there again but choose a more select range.

Wow what a find. I’ve found my religion of choice now. Great food, wine and service. Very welcoming and highly recommend a visit.

The fish & salad were delicious. The prawns, scallops were nice but the crumb around the outside over powered their flavour as it was so thick, flavour was a little flourish. once removed they were ok. See picture. The tartare sauce was generous but not to my liking, not sure why but it had a strange taste. I would recommend the fish & salads if you go. We both felt the same. Remember this is just our opinion 🌿

Giggles aside, the food is great! Cheap lunch pack ( $16.95 take away with fish prawns calamari chips sauce, a salad and a drink!!!! What if it IS a miracle lol). I asked for add on of the local-caught garfish. It turns out to be smaller pieces which means a lot more oil when batteted. But the flesh is soft and rich, quite a tasty fish. The fish of the pack is butterfish - much lighter in texture and feels less oily being a bigger piece. The prawns are lovely and bouncy under the bite, calamari was average but big pieces after all. The pack comes with a big tub of sauce and lemon as well as a salt sachet. Everything comes freshly cooked but not salted which is different but works out fine. I did like the salad a lot, but is it the best salad in the world...?

Google
A really unique place for dinner in Port Pirie. Local fish and chips in a converted church. Fresh and tasty!

Google
What a wonderful find for us weary travellers. Very unexpected. Great sense of humour. The prawns we had were so very nice and the baklava was out of this world. Front of house staff very helpful and lovely. Chef was also brilliant.

Google
Terrific food, a little bit pricey, but worth it. A wide selection of seafood and burgers. Good coffee.

Yelp
We use to eat there at least once or tee wide a month. But quality was going down, you could tell the fish was frozen despite there being a local fish monger just down the road. Orders were getting messed up and the salad bar was stingy and smelt weird.

Yelp
Barnacle Bill is inside an old church. The price is reasonable but be mindful that the dine in menu and take away menu have different prices. The salad bar is available for people who dine in. The staff who were there the day we visited are friendly and quickly tidied tables. I love that a tartare sauce bottle is handed to you when you dine in, I am definitely a sauce lover so I am easily disappointed when only a little is supplied but that is not the case here. We ordered the lunch special which gave us a little bit of everything. The fish was nicely crumbed and the calamari was not overcooked or chewy. The prawns were nice and the chips were nice and crispy. Nice to have something different for a meal

Yelp
As far as barnacle bills restraints go this one stands out, not just because it's in a beautiful old church but the service is always great and the food consistently excellent!
