Seeking Healing at Yonder Escalante, a Desert Glamping Retreat in Utah - AFAR

"A very narrow, tight slot canyon known for its squeezing, gut‑wrenching passages; navigating its confined corridors is physically demanding and exhilarating, offering otherworldly scenery for those willing to tackle the challenge." - Michelle Baran

So fun. Not as visually pleasing as other slots but so many obstacles to climb over, it was so, so fun. The hike in/out is hot, not very straight forward and can be long… especially if you get lost…. Which we did. Do make sure to go the correct route: spooky 1st then, peak a boo 2nd. This makes for a less sun-exposed hike on the way back and avoids annoying the other hikers. We didn’t do this but went early enough in the day (8 am) to avoid bottle-necking everyone else. I’d imagine even an hour later and we would have been a horrible burden. If you have joint issues, especially knee issues, maybe reconsider. I was frequently dragging my outward turned foot through areas. If you’re claustrophobic, don’t torture yourself. Also, incase case you didn’t get the notice: don’t bring a big bag!! Tiny, light weight daypacks only! This will allow you a better time and protect the space more. Do hike with lots of water though. It’s a hot hike in.

it is a wonderful experience to go through the slot. it is so narrow at some points i have to lower my body. also thanks two Utah families, without their help, we could not finish this slot.

This is a must if you're visiting the area. Just make sure to bring healthy snacks and at least 1 large bottle of water per person. The entire hike to visit both gulches may take 3h-4h - or about 2h if you are in a great physical condition.

An amazing hike!! The slots are beautiful! It is fun to climb down the rope. **Make sure you go the right way** it is tight in some places and not enough room for people to be hiking both directions. Our group (going the right way) has to wait for 20-30 mins for ppl going the wrong way to come thru.

This was a great hike! Make sure you start from the top, coming across from peekaboo. When coming from peekaboo follow cairns almost in a straight line.. you will come to a kind of fork in the desert with one lone tree/shrub that you will see and think ah a little shade to rest and sit. At this tree is the fork in the path. Veer right to go down back toward spooky exit or peekaboo entrance. Stay straight or to the left of the tree to continue to Spooky. That entrance is probably 30-50 yards past the tree and down just a bit. Spooky is very narrow in places but in a fun way, hold backpack in one hand and move sideways narrow. I'm 180lbs and did fine. There is a rock slide but way thru is over to left and down the hole and down the rope. Very fun! Even after a flash flood it was pretty dry except one spot that you can't avoid, which is a shallow pool after a kind of slide. Both peekaboo and spooky are fun and easy but spooky is easier anytime, peekaboo nearly impossible when wet, you will know if there is a big puddle in front of entrance. You need 2-3 good folks for team work is the only way. See peekaboo review to learn how to do when wet

You NEED 1 gallon of water PER PERSON (including kids in your group) if you are going to attempt this hike. Other reviews don’t make it very clear that there is a 1.5 mile hike just to get the entrance of the first slot. I would STRONGLY recommend against doing this with children unless you have at least 4 strong, coordinated adults who can help them through the canyon and some very resilient kids. Also, it is VERY easy to get lost, even if you are familiar with the area. There is no shade for large portions of the hike. The roads & path have changed in recent years, so it may be different (harder) than you remember if you’ve done it but not recently. We did this hike on a July morning with 8 adults and 5 children. Ran out of water at the bottom of the canyon. Had no idea where we were when we came out of the first slot canyon and had to wander for a while before luckily finding our way. Everyone was on the border of heat exhaustion. My BIL ran the last 1.5 miles of the hike with my niece who was getting lethargic. Passed another group where a young women was vomiting from the heat. This hike is brutal.

Much easier than Peek-a-boo canyon, but still a lot of fun. It’s short so it doesn’t take long but it can get really narrow in some parts.

We underestimated how hard it would be to physically hike through these slot canyons! It was definitely strenuous but was also a lot of fun, a once in a lifetime hike and experience. Worth the long drive down the dirt road for sure!
