I’m definitely adding Spring Espresso to my preferred list of places for coffee/ lunch when I visit York. It’s a good size with plenty of seating and different table sizes across 2 areas, one of which is a step up. Choose a table then order at the counter. There’s a very tasty looking menu with quite a lot of egg dishes but it was too early for lunch so I just ordered an Americano and a piece of millionaire shortbread. My order arrived quickly. I asked for oatmilk on the side and was pleased to get a really good amount. The shortbread was delicious; probably the best I’ve eaten anywhere, a very light base, creamy caramel and quality chocolate topping. The cafe was busy but there was plenty of room for more; customers were across the age range and included people working in laptops. Toilet facilities are on the raised level and tucked away. I will definitely be visiting again!

My second visit to York and I always come to Spring Espresso for breakfast/brunch. Their food is amazing and their service is top notch. :)

It was a lovely brunch. Food did take a while and portion sizes were a tad small. Food was divine though! The best part of my order was my chai latte! It was beautifully spiced and just the right balance. Nice place and would go again, service could have been quicker!

I decided on my last trip to York, I'd swing by Spring next time I was in the city and actually get brunch - today was that time. On a reasonably busy Tuesday in February, myself and a friend rocked up to Spring for something light and quick. I opted for the Eggs Benedict and she went for the Soup of the Day. Eggs Benedict comes with two poached eggs on top of an English muffin with ham, hollandaise and garnish. I really hoped to be adding this to my 'you need to go here' list, but unfortunately my choice today doesn't quite get it there. The bacon (swapped instead of ham at my request and no extra cost, a nice touch) was crisp around the edge and tender across the rest. The hollandaise was creamy and had a nice flavour, not too overpowering and definitely added to the dish. However unfortunately the eggs themselves were overcooked, probably only by tens of seconds, but ultimately that resulted in almost fully set yolks which turned the eggs into a far drier affair than they should've been. With the number of dishes they offer explicitly stating poached eggs, this needs to be addressed for me. The flavour was there, but the texture and creaminess in the dish came solely from the hollandaise and that is a shame. My friend had the soup of the day and was really chuffed with her choice. It came with sourdough and butter. It looked and smelt the business. Coffee was pretty good, but came far too soon to have in tandem with our food. I don't often think much on service times, but my friend pointed out that we'd been waiting a while and looking back, it feels like we were. A bustling little brunch spot that maybe I caught on a rough one, I'd love to return and see it improved on what we had today, but it's hard to justify giving it a second chance over the other variety of businesses in York. It was ok for us, but it's hard to say any more than that.

We came to this café for breakfast on a Sunday. As soon as we entered, the person at the counter was incredibly rude to my boyfriend for no reason maybe that’s just how he behaves, but he should really understand there’s no place for that kind of attitude in social settings. We asked for the drinks to be served with the food (so they wouldn’t get cold), but they came early. We reminded them again, and they said the food was coming — yet we waited for another round (Probably he didn’t notify them at all). The food was okay, not bad at all, and the cook was very kind and polite — which we appreciated. However, the attitude of the person at the counter completely overshadowed everything. Unfortunately, we left with regret.

I ordered their pastry, and it tasted great. The tartness of the lemon balanced out the sweetness of the blueberries. The coffee was at the perfect temperature—nice and warm.

Google
What a lovely café with super food and very polite, helpful staff. There is an easy atmosphere, plenty of tables and a good menu/coffee range. I had the whipped feta with beetroot and 2 poached eggs on sourdough, served with rocket salad 🥗 🧀 🥚with a decaf Flat White&water. Delicious 😋 ! Thanks for a very relaxed lunch. "I'll be back", as Arnie said! Maggie

Yelp
A haven of coffee perfectionism and breakfast obsession nestled in downtown York. This place takes their coffee seriously. And their shakshuka. Apicy and piping hot with a crust of bread that was used to the last crumb. And the porridge, which was indeed 'proper.' The mad scientists behind the coffee bar mixed me a cold brew+tonic: trust me, weird but wonderful. Deceptively light and refreshing with Alchemy at work. The food takes time but it's so worth it. Brunch aficionados, you are home.

Yelp
Best coffee I've had since leaving Australia, and food was great - will definitely be back :)

Yelp
A chain establishment (or at least two locations within York's city walls), although from the outside you wouldn't be able to tell. I was initially drawn in from the emphasis on espresso and coffee, having been searching for a place to serve my coffee withdrawals. Sadly, Spring would not do the trick. I ordered a macchiato. Service was decent given how crowded the establishment was, and I got my drink in a reasonable time. However, that's where the praise ends. Having ordered my drink to go, I didn't linger upon being handed my drink. Mistake #1. The drink was HOT. So hot, that I couldn't even hold it in my hands for more than a few seconds. I kept having to switch hands so I wouldn't drop the coffee or get burned. The drink was handed to me without a sleeve, which definitely contributed to the difficulty in holding it. Think I'm exaggerating? I eventually had to head back to the store to actually ask for another cup to allow for some insulation. The baristas were quite rude about me asking for another cup, which is shocking given that the high temperature is a sign of a bad cup of coffee... Overall, even after waiting a while for it to cool, the drink still burned my mouth. Rest assured, I didn't go back the rest of my trip. Even if you specialize in coffee, it doesn't mean you should.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and breakfast treats! No wifi. All coffee shops NEED WIFI. Recommend that you get, because all else is PERFECT AND GRAND!!. Foods look amazing and a great food menu for breakfast or lunch or snacks. Great place to grab a snack and hop on the train. Coffee is superb!

Yelp
OK. So I thought I knew all the coffee shops in York. This little shop down Fossgate had previously escaped my attention, and it has the most excellent coffee. In fact, some organisation has deemed it to have the best latte in the UK in 2012. (I've uploaded a photo of the certificate.) Quite nice cakes too.

Yelp
Awesome little hole in the wall type store, friendly staff. I've got the flat white, very very good. Great environment too although not much seating was available, but i would definitely go back!

Yelp
There is so much cafe choice in York if you set the bar low. If coffee excellence and barista skill is something you can appreciate then set the bar high. To experience the heady heights of the perfect small, independent cafe experience then head to Spring Espresso. Espresso coffees are lovingly extracted for you by skilled staff. Tea drinkers are also catered for with excellent leaf tea available. Locally sourced breads and cakes complement the drinks served. Artworks adorn walls and ergonomic fixtures and fittings are a joy to behold. Welcoming staff too. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Excellent coffee. Excellent service - really friendly and accommodating. Pretty good snacky food - panini, soup, sandwiches, etc. Welcome relief from Starbucks, Costa and the other chains. They were even selling an excellent guide to Craft beer venues in London. Covering all bases!
