I decided on my last trip to York, I'd swing by Spring next time I was in the city and actually get brunch - today was that time.
On a reasonably busy Tuesday in February, myself and a friend rocked up to Spring for something light and quick. I opted for the Eggs Benedict and she went for the Soup of the Day.
Eggs Benedict comes with two poached eggs on top of an English muffin with ham, hollandaise and garnish. I really hoped to be adding this to my 'you need to go here' list, but unfortunately my choice today doesn't quite get it there. The bacon (swapped instead of ham at my request and no extra cost, a nice touch) was crisp around the edge and tender across the rest. The hollandaise was creamy and had a nice flavour, not too overpowering and definitely added to the dish. However unfortunately the eggs themselves were overcooked, probably only by tens of seconds, but ultimately that resulted in almost fully set yolks which turned the eggs into a far drier affair than they should've been. With the number of dishes they offer explicitly stating poached eggs, this needs to be addressed for me. The flavour was there, but the texture and creaminess in the dish came solely from the hollandaise and that is a shame.
My friend had the soup of the day and was really chuffed with her choice. It came with sourdough and butter. It looked and smelt the business.
Coffee was pretty good, but came far too soon to have in tandem with our food. I don't often think much on service times, but my friend pointed out that we'd been waiting a while and looking back, it feels like we were.
A bustling little brunch spot that maybe I caught on a rough one, I'd love to return and see it improved on what we had today, but it's hard to justify giving it a second chance over the other variety of businesses in York. It was ok for us, but it's hard to say any more than that.
