On the Grid : Spring Street Grocer

"There are simply not enough words or images we can include in this guide to do justice to the sensory joy of Spring St.Grocer. Open from early till late, what initially appears to be a lane edge coffee stop is in fact a well stocked grocer featuring local produce, take home dinners, delicious food during the day and shelves full of captivating produce and small goods. Couple with that the incredible daily changing Gelateria Primavera menu and the passionate and knowledgable staff happy to guide you through, and it feels a bit like heaven. Whatever you do, don't miss out on making your way down the spiral staircase to the cheese cellar housed within the tiled basement that also functions as an event space." - Grosz Co Lab

Walking past and called in to get coffees (flat white and decaf soy latte) which were terrible. Takeaway cup was so light I had to take lid off to check they'd actually given me some coffee but all I got was a couple of sips and heaps of froth. However I did like the look of the place with its nicely presented goods on display, mainly Italian pantry goods but also some fresh bread and a great looking walk-in cheese room. Also tantalisingly a spiral staircase downstairs to? So I don't know what to make of this place, it looks so appealing but the coffee, amongst the worst I've had. 2.7.24 got a decaf soy latte and a spinach and ricotta roll and I wish I'd read my own review because the coffee wasn't great.

dangerously addictive! This place is my happy place — I swear my soul leaves my body every time I have the Pistachio di Bronte 😍💚 The quality? Always top-notch. Never once let me down. Every single bite = pure joy. 🍦💫

Simply beautiful gelato flavours. We sat down with a variety of gelatos and every one was a masterpiece. In the back of the shop is a range of cheeses and bottled produce and by the huge number of customers buying them, it must be good.

Love the ambience, warm and classic.. They sell some special items and yummy gelato. I prefer gelati! Also I found lots of Tony’s choco flavours here too 🥰.

We popped in here for a quick bite to it eat on the way to the Princess Theatre. Service was great, toasted sandwiches delicious. No time for a gelati this time unfortunately but we will be back 😃

Google
Has always been our random pop-up gelati bar at night right all the way from when I was at uni many years ago! I’ve always loved the unusual flavours, but always flock there for the coconuts, the pandans & pistachios varieties & unique sweet treats! Love it! Added Sept 2023... Keep popping in continuously after a feast in the CBD! The rosewater & nuts gelato was 👌🏼👌🏼 And the beautiful barista that served us Wednesday night was so lovely! Thank you for our gelatos and espressos! We loved the beautiful energy you brought forward into your store that night and to us! You helped a local with produce from the grocery store even though that section was closed, now that was customer service above and beyond and you did it with such genuine love ❤️ Keep Doing what you're doing 🫶🙌🏼🙏 Truly is such a special place.

@springstreetgrocer 📍CBD ➖ Reuben Toastie ➖ Cheese Cellar Toastie Spring Street Grocer located in Melbourne CBD is a hub for locally sourced, handmade, and ethically produced products. From gelati, panini to artisanal cheese, their offerings represent their commitment to supporting local suppliers. It is inspired by owners Con Christopoulos and Joshua Brisbane (@theeuropeanmelbourne, @siglobar, @citywineshop) European travels. 🧀 We popped by early morning to try out a couple of their panini, after walking past their display board a day before. All options sounded delicious and under $15. The Reuben was perfectly balanced, but felt light it needed something punchy. The Cheese Cellar was very very basic, and was soft/soggy on one side. 🥪 Decent coffee and wet chai, all served by friendly staff. Not a bad option in the CBD, especially if you prefer something more simple, however there is a lot of incredible competition in the area that may impress more. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yelp
Wonderful cheese selection in the cheese cave that is downstairs with a knowledgeable cheese monger. I went to cheese stores all through Melbourne and around Brisbane and this was where I found the greatest selection of cheese made in Australia. Upstairs has a variety of boutique products from granola to chocolate. Also, there is a gelato counter and espresso bar as you enter the store.

Yelp
This place looks like nothing more than a gelato shop from the front, so you'd be forgiven for not realising there's a whole specialty grocery inside -- and they also do delicious made-to-order artisan sandwiches to take away. To get a sandwich, bypass the gelato out front and go inside, then bypass the groceries and head straight to the back. There's a cashier here who will take your order and bring your sandwich out to you after about a 10-15 minute wait. I love this place because of their four vegan sandwich options: a tofu salad open sandwich with sesame and lime dressing; a bagel sandwich with a tofu and corn fritter and curried cashews, cucumber, and coriander; a tempeh burger on focaccia with kimchi and ABC sauce; and an eggplant, pumpkin, spinach, white bean, and basil pesto on focaccia. If these descriptions don't have you drooling right now, I don't know what's wrong with you. All vegan sandwiches are $11.50 and come with potato chips. This is a fair price for a delicious and rather filling lunch. Their non-vegan sandwiches aren't much more expensive either. My favorite is the tempeh burger with ABC sauce -- it's like an Indonesian sweet soy sauce -- oh man. Just the right mix of unusual but awesome flavours. There's no seating here -- it's take-away only, unless you're out front having a gelato. While you wait for your sandwich, you can peruse the specialty grocery items. They have a small but impressive collection of hard-to-find and locally-made items, such as La Tortilleria tortillas, local hand-made chocolates, jars of refrigerated kimchi, and chips made from all manner of non-potato things -- kale chips, bean chips, turnip chips.... Just be prepared for some sticker shock. These specialty groceries don't come cheap. (One of the chocolate bars was $14!!! It better be chocolate CRACK, at that price.) All in all, a great place to come for an awesome take-away sandwich with fresh and often unusual ingredients at lunchtime, and a fun place to peruse if you like your exotic, organic, hand-made/hand-dipped/hand-chopped/hand-crafted/hand-tooled/hand-whatever fancy-pants specialty grocery items. You know who you are. (Note the sandwiches are a Monday-Friday lunchtime thing only. I came once on the weekend and they weren't making sandwiches. The gelato is available all the time, but I admit I haven't sampled it yet.)

Yelp
It's a little CHEESY.... so at the moment they have a beautiful selection of small goods, cheese, organic fruit and veg, but the one thing that is OUT of this worlds would have to be the Gelato. They have such amazing flavours such as salted caramel with chilli, they only use 1 birds eye in the mix to give it a kick at the back of your palate. They do light lunches, take away food so you have no need to cook dinner if you cannot be bothered cooking with the amazing produce that they have. Ok so I know that this good enough to make your way down but "wait there's more" they have almost completed a man made cheese cave - yes CHEESE thats it.. You will be able to sit down stairs and eat cheese while enjoying a wine.. Honestly what could be better?

Rachel R.

Yelp
We came for their small but fabulous cheese selection and it did not disappoint! (Take the spiral staircase downstairs for the heavenly cheese room). If you don't know what to buy, just ask for help. They have many other lovely gourmet treats - breads, chocolates, gelato, fresh pasta, etc. It's not the cheapest place to stock up on provisions, but everything is so so tasty!
google avatar

Tresna L.

Yelp
I come here on a regular basis. I'd like to say it's for all the fresh organic fruit and vege, but usually it's to stock up on cheese from downstairs, a scoop of gelati or a fresh cold pressed veggie juice. If you need high-end pantry items, fancy chocolate gifts or maybe some ready-made meals to warm up and plate at home, then make a visit to Spring Street Grocer. Grab a bunch of flowers and pop next door for a bottle of wine and hey presto - dinner is served and your favourite +1 will think you're the best. Lunch time is busy as people line up for sandwiches, so avoid this time if you're not there for the same reason.

Yelp
What a beautiful little grocer right in the heart of the CBD! Its got the best gelato shop out the front, a small but comprehensive deli/grocer round the back and a cheese cellar in the basement! Dropped by this evening to grab some cheese on the way home from work and was upset I've never thought to visit this place before! Going down the spiral stairs, the basement area has a dining table for 10 (?) set up, so it possibly serves private dinners. Through the doors, you enter a cheese cellar most cheese lovers would die for. With an amazing range of cheeses from all over the world, this cheese cellar may be small in size but it's definitely well equipped. Staff members were very helpful and exceptionally friendly in helping me select the right cheese for me. She was very forthcoming with recommendations and talking me through the differences as I tasted the different cheeses. I should also mention that the grocer stocks healthy and socially ethical products which is always a plus! Including some local products which I know to be carried only by cafes or local restaurants. Will definitely be back for groceries for special occasions!

Yelp
Spring Street institution The European has fuelled a steady gourmet revolution of this corner of the CBD. The spread of good food and wine started with the Supper Club, the Wine Bar, and then with the opening of Gelateria Primavera you now have a small precinct at the top end of town to get your breakfast and coffee, boozy lunch and dinner, after show drinks, cigars at the Supper Club (for those of you that sadly insist on smoking), and the perfect affogato or gelato to finish off the evening before retiring to The Windsor for the night. Nestled behind this, however, is a little gem known as Spring St Grocer - not least because it has no other signage to call it any different. A small haven of organic fresh fruit, deli supplies, antipasto and charcuterie, gourmet meats and seafoods this piece of hipster home-cooking heaven also boasts a cheese cave downstairs with its own imported fantastic French foodie. I suspect Frenchy Francois is chained in the mouldy dungeon and let out only during working hours, never to see sunlight. The Achilles heel to this place, however, is the Gelateria out the front. There is a good chance that after your coffee and gelato you'll never make it into the door of the grocer, let alone to the occasionally staffed sandwich bar at the back. I'm not sure who their clientele are: cashed up inner city empty nesters? Politicians picking up groceries on the way home? Hotel penthouse guests looking to entertain at the last minute? Or is it the owner's personal tax-deductible pantry? Either way, it is worth checking out, and you can even pick up some fresh flowers to spruce up your apartment from the florist next door.

Yelp
Spring Street Grocer is the new kid on the block. For now, they only sell gelato and cold press juice. Both of which are absolutely ahmazeeballs. In time, a cheese cave will be operational. But till then, stuff your face with the best gelato on this side of town!!!

Yelp
We were wandering through the city and stumbled upon this great little place. It doesn't look like gelati place however after a quick glance on the wall at the selction availible I left with the best Hazelnut Gelati I have had the pleasure of eating. There isn't much to this shop, there is a cool ggrocery store in the next room. It was the flavour and smooth consistency of the gelati that will have me going back. Check it out!

Yelp
Great gelato made fresh daily! The flavours range from the classics like pistachio to out-there ones like gorgonzola!

Yelp
Spring Street Grocer offers a rotating selection of interesting (and tasty) gelato flavours. There are also dairy free and sorbet options on the menu. The white chocolate peppermint I ordered was amazing. But their prices keep them from a 5 star rating. $5 for a single small scoop, then $7.50 for a medium with 1-3 flavours. This too high to add Spring Street to my regular list of favourites, especially considering the prices, portion size, and friendly customer service at other quality gelato competitors in Melbourne.

Yelp
Many people don't make it past the gelato at the front door but if you continue on inside you'll find a world of gourmet food. I like this place for the care and attention to the quality of the produce and food items. While the area is quite small, its fun to work your way around the spiral just picking up items and reading what they are and considering if you can use them in a dish tonight. While I usually think of Queen Vic Markets or Terra Madre for organic products, I'm usually pleasantly surprised to find the items I'm looking for here e.g. organic goat's or sheep's milk yoghurt, or organic meats. You can find a fascinating range of top quality chocolates as well - they make the stuff sold at Woolies look very third rate. Finally, be sure to venture down the spiral staircase to the Hobbit Caves, otherwise known as the Spring Spring Cheese Cellar and indulge in top quality cheeses. You can ask the knowledgeable staff about the best cheese to use for a particular dish and also what wine would complement and tips on how to server the two. Get along to one of the Cheese 101 courses to get started on your cheese education. Finally, this places makes quality sandwiches for lunch and some special little chocolate treats with exotic flavours. That's a lot to pack in to a little space so come along and explore with your senses.

Yelp
If you can walk past the gelato bar out the front (ok, don't do that - get one either on the way in or out), you will find a most wonderful grocery store filled to the brim with artisan meats, meals and goodies for creating your own feasts. Find the spiral staircase and find yourself in possibly the world's prettiest cheese "cave". Less like a cave and more like an art gallery, Spring St Grocers cheese cellar is quite spectacular. The green and white tiles are lined with historic photos on the entrance to where the cheese is housed. Oh the cheese. So. Much. Cheese. The friendly staff will not roll their eyes while you umm and err over the massive selection, offering helpful advice and samples to make sure you pick what you're looking for. The range is so good here, I've never left without enough to feed an army and always end up having cheese for dinner. No regrets. Up in the Grocer part they sell this magical mix called "Grilled Cheese Mix". You spread it on toast and melt it until the most drool-worthy and completely addictive smell fills your kitchen. I had it at a BBQ recently and had to buy some immediately. It's not cheap, but man...you have to try it. Worth every cent. My poor waistline has been subjected to it most days since purchasing. So if you want to impress friends at a BBQ or picnic, or maybe just fancy having cheese for dinner (we're grown ups, who's going to stop us?) then I highly recommend swinging by Spring St. Oh and don't forget your gelati on the way out.

Yelp
Ok, so what originally brought me here was the gelato. Pretty much everyone I had spoken to labelled it as the best in Melbourne, and I must agree with them. There's a changing selection of flavors, so you never really know what you're going to get. They'll have some standards such as chocolate or hazelnut, but also some fun flavors like salted caramel with chili or matcha. The serving sizes are just right, though it's not exactly on the cheap side. Not great for groups as the seating is minimal (normal only about 2 tables / 4-5 chairs). The grocer itself is amazing. I could easily spend hours in there looking at all their different products. There are jars of sauces and spreads, packs of chocolates, as well as fresh fruits and pastas. There's also an entire cheese section. Again, not exactly on the cheap side but the quality is just amazing. You can find things in here that aren't just in your average Coles or Woolies.

Yelp
Nice people and I still go here for staples but the dips are awful. Vegan aioli is way, way too garlicky even for someone who likes garlic. Beetroot dip has way too much dill. I love hummous but this one is too thick and garlicky. Recommend it for other things just wish they'd not overdo the flavours in their dips.

Yelp
So you like to get distracted by fancy little stores with heaps of great produce? Perhaps one that has a great range for your next planned anti-pasto platter? Or are you in the need for some Gelato and sorbets and other freshly made sugar based sweet treats by the front counter? Then this is the place for you. While you're at it you can browse all the other rad food items in store. This is a business slowly building up by by the way of things either a great place to get a treat on the street or bolster the pantry/ fridge with some excellent produce. Well maybe not the last part as it will probably get eaten as soon as you arrive home.

Yelp
Tried ricotta pear chocolate flavour and I must say new found love. I will be back for the vegan option.

Yelp
Follow the bright neon "Cheese" sign down the narrow spiral staircase and you will not be disappointed. No false advertising here. This really is the best cheese room in Melbourne at the moment. A crown that traditionally sits on the head of Richmond Hill Cafe Larder, but one that has deserved some solid competition for some time now. The cheesemonger here is Anthony Femia, who runs the place with genuine generosity, passion and enthusiasm. One warning. This passion and enthusiasm is contagious. Quite easy to bound away from the place laden with more cheese that you imagined. Well that warning is mostly for me. Spring Street Grocer is in my neighbourhood, which turns the cheese room from an occasional extravagance to a regular indulgence. Even so, no hint of a complaint from me. The Grocer itself is compact, opting to maximise the space with quality over quantity. The goods here are a little on the expensive side, but high quality. This really is a less-is-more place. I may do my weekly shop down the road at QV, but I pop in here for that special ingredient or two. A great piece of steak, gelati, anchovies, chocolate, organic vegies, spices... cheese.

Yelp
Love this shop. Been here about half a dozen times. I always go here for the cheese in the basement. There's a fantastic variety of cheeses here from across the world. I find the French chap here to be a bit snobby and prefer his assistants. They're always happy to give tasting samples which is great. They also have great crackers as well. In addition, it's not uncommon to get tempted to buy chocolates on my way out.
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love the ice cream flavours here. Very unique and such a great treat during spring and summer. Price is decent and would definitely be eating this every chance i get

Yelp
Amazing, high quality grocer in CBD Melbourne. Beautiful products wherever you look but don't forget to visit their cheese cellar downstairs! It contains some of Australia's finest selection of local and imported cheese with a number of varieties you won't find anywhere else. Plus cheesemonger Anthony matures some of the cheeses in the adjacent maturing room himself. A treat for your eyes AND taste buds!

Yelp
Be warned: YOU WILL SPEND ALL OF YOUR MONEY HERE!!! If you are a health conscious, food loving, sweet-toothed, hungry person, you will not be able to walk out of this place with a full wallet. But boy is it worth it! I both love and hate that it's so close to where I work every day, because now I've started, it's like an addiction - no other place is as satisfying for my snacking, nibbling, dinnering, any-time-of-the-day needs. My staples from this heavenly store are either the Green or Berry/Almond/Cacao Smoothie (in your own glass jar to keep), the Pana chocolates (raw, vegan, incredible, melt in your mouth chocolate), the pick 'n mix dates/almonds/nuts, the chia coconut pots, the Luvju Loving Earth chocolates, the coconut pandan gelati (OMG) and the daily salads. BUT - the absolute hands down winner for me are the incredible Ginger Shots. For $2.50 per shot, it's a cold-pressed ginger elixar they make up fresh every day. As you literally shot it, it burns like crazy, but man it's good. I swear it's what's kept me healthy all year! Try it - You're welcome xx

Yelp
Great coffee, amazing sangas, the BEST ice-cream in the city and a tonne of organic regional produce. Not the kind of place you expect to see in the CBD but exactly what you want to find.
