Missouri’s Cheese Caves Are a Mystery

"Farther south, deep in the Ozarks, a rumor continues to swirl that below the city of Springfield has a sprawling cave of cheese, spread by Modern Farmer, for example. Natural caves such as Crystal Caves or Fantastic Caverns are de rigueur for the area, and a popular attraction for field trips and tourists. But this rumored cave — the cheese cave — is actually a 3.2 million-square-foot warehouse known as Springfield Underground, which opened in 1946 as a limestone quarry. Is there cheese? Yes. But what type and how much remains a mystery as the company rents storage space to private clients and debunks the myth that government cheese is hiding inside. "The USDA is not a tenant of Springfield Underground and we do not have a pound of government-owned cheese," Christina Angle, CFO for the Erlen Group, told Food & Wine. "That said, Springfield Underground is a critical part of our nation’s supply chain for many of our tenants’ products, including cheese." - Anne Roderique-Jones

Park on staging area. Walk to guard shack. They let me check in early and i drop my trailer underground.Building 10. After few hours got a call to pick up trailer and papers from building 10. Take a photo of the seal when getting papers you will need it inside. All good, before app time left the building. Polite no complaints.

Great place interesting layout, friendly folks simple process just make sure you have a building number or at the very least whether it’s Cold Zone or not because there are 2 truck entrances depending on building

They just have yall stocking thier pantries for when total chaos breaks out. When God/The Lord Jesus raptures his people and removes his hand from the earth, I bet the folks gone kids out thier employees, shut the doors, while the world suffers and starves to death. This is not a warehouse. It's is definitely a bunker hidden in plane site. Atleast you know where to go when doodoo hit the fan. Might not get in but you can try.

Yelp
While visiting a buddy in Springfield he took me to this place as his companies data center is housed here. It's a secure facility underground, perfect for storing data related equipment due to it's controlled and constant temperatures. The place is absolutely amazing. They have manufacturing facilities, storage facilities, and of course their own train, because you know, they can. His data center was protected so he couldn't get me in to look at that, so this is more of a touristy review rather than an actual user review. But I've got to say it's freakin amazing, and if you've never had the chance to get into a mine that's been converted into commercial usage I'd highly recommend stopping by here if you can wrangle a pass!
