America's 15 Best Small-Town Art Museums

"Utah welcomed its first fine arts museum in 1903 — seven short years after it achieved statehood — when two local artists donated works to Springville High School, a Spanish colonial revival structure in a small town that's since been nicknamed Art City. Born to Mormon parents, Cyrus E. Dallin sculpted portraits of Native Americans as well as the famous gold-plated Angel Moroni atop the Salt Lake Temple, while Swiss-born Impressionist painter John Hafen was enamored with the rural Utah landscape. The Springville Museum of Art nearly doubled in size in 2004, and in 2009, it grew even more with the addition of an outdoor sculpture garden. Though Utah-based art still makes up about 80% of the 2,500-piece collection, you'll also encounter American realist and Soviet realist works." - Travel + Leisure Editors

You wouldn't expect to find a collection of Soviet art in a small town in Utah. It's a great way to stand out among regional art museums. The historic building itself, the sculpture garden, and the Utah Quilt Show were also great. And it's free and was open until 8 pm on Wednesday! I've recommended this museum to all my friends.

Loved this place! I was so surprised by the amount of interactive exhibits they had and all of the things they had for kids. It was a good balance between things you couldn’t touch and things you could. Loved seeing all of the talent, creativity, and variety. The garden area was nice, the staff was helpful (and went out of their way to help another guest that was there which I loved seeing). Clean, inviting, and my kids and I want to go back!

In February 2025, we visited the Springville Museum of Art in Springville, Utah. We were attending the client appreciation dinner with Ashley Jensen & Associates realtors. We ate catered food from Marvelous Catering in Provo. The food and the artistic atmosphere were amazing, and we had an enjoyable and memorable experience. Thank you, Ashley Jensen & Associates and Springville Musuem of Art, for hosting this event and providing delicious food for your client appreciation dinner.

Google
Creative, large, cozy, free and awesome museum of art! There isn’t a lot to do in Springville as a whole so this was a hot spot and it was definitely worth checking out! A lot of the art came from 12th grade high schoolers. Not all of it but most! And I must say WOW! The talent some of these students have is incredible! I thoroughly enjoyed all the art and the stories behind them. The Gallery is pretty, open with space to wander and kinda get lost. It was bigger than I thought and it had a really cool center pavilion space with some cool spiral stairs next to it. They have an awesome gift shop with all sorts of things from candles, books, artwork, snacks, t shirts, tote bags, jigsaw puzzle, paints and more! All in all a pretty cool museum!

Absolutely love this museum. Gina is the best- so informative and helpful. I toured the museum for my wedding and then attended a friend's wedding here. Their exhibits are put together so well and there are even areas geared toward children, with interactive exhibits. They have great exhibits that are not fine art, like the quilt show, historical fashion, and more. I highly recommend!

Google
What a great museum of art! And what a fabulous building for it to be housed in! Amazing collection of work from The last century and further. Master artists and contemporary lined the walls. I highly recommend checking this place out.

I absolutely adore this museum. The artwork is stunning, staff is so friendly, and it's just a great place to explore. It's a great venue for weddings or events as well. If you're in need of a photographer, let's chat! I am obsessed with this bridal session we planned here.

Cute but small, for a date maybe add an activity afterwards. The patio is beautiful and has tables to eat.

Yelp
100% recommend this FREE museum! Beautiful inside and out! Got out of the heat and decided to check this place out since we were in the area. Was actually quite surprised that it took us longer than expected to roam the rooms and halls.

Yelp
Wowza! I underestimated how great this museum would be, even after being told that it's a really good one. I stand corrected, and happy about it in every way. The building that houses the museum is an old, mission style structure that has decades of history oozing from every stucco crevice. The architecture itself would make it worth visiting, let alone the amazing art exhibits that are on display inside. The hallways are lined with beautiful art on each wall-so much more than can be experienced in just one visit. In addition to the art exhibits, the museum is also a venue that you can rent for events. I had the pleasure of witnessing the preparation for a wedding and then the bride and groom as they were getting ready to walk down the aisle. It was magical-such a beautiful place for such a beautiful event.

Yelp
Definitely recommend stopping by this museum- and it's Free. Also be prepared to stay longer than you thought because there is more to see than you think. It's a nice hidden treasure here in Springville.

Yelp
Intimate and serene place to contemplate the arts! I love how deafly this museum moves between audience needs and practicing artists, professional positioning.

Yelp
I don't know of any other art museums in the area. It's a great activity to do with children on a cold, rainy day. Another plus is that there is no cost to come visit! Donations are welcomed. There are three floors, the main floor is constantly changing artwork so there is always something new to come and check out. The basement floor is entirely a kids area to explore their artistic skills. There are at least 5 different areas and activities for them to do! We love coming here to play and learn a little more about art.

Community friendly and well organized and enjoyable collection. Always changing the collections for a good variety of

Yelp
Great art museum. The new staff are also making it a better venue for concerts and special events. But they are also doing their best to help support local artists as well by informing them about upcoming events and art related offers throughout the state. The special art shows are also nice to attend. It would be nice to see more traditional pen and ink or drawing exhibits, though, rather than just paintings and sculptures.

Shelise S.

Yelp
Spanish colonial revival architecture is stunning. Quality of artwork is lovely. The gardens is icing on the cake.

Yelp
Went to an after hours event at the museum and I was pleasantly surprised. They had a large variety of art in different mediums all by local artist as well was a beautiful building to wander and enjoy. While I was there the theme of the pieces where religious in nature and I loved the many different interpretations and styles people created art in. I'm not a frequent visitor of art museums but this place definitely opened my eye up to the beauty of these types of exhibits. The museum itself was clean and well cared for. They also had a mother's room in the restroom area that would be great for if you have a baby that needs to be nursed.

Yelp
Wonderful little gem of a museum with some terrific art pieces from all over. Very friendly staffer Brianna gave good ideas on where things were located & what to look for in the galleries. We were very happy! This museum is not to be overlooked! (Admission is by contribution: well worth a good donation. There's also a gift shop by the front desk for browsing, & you can book reservations for private receptions, events, & weddings at the museum.)

Yelp
The first Tuesday of the month they do Guppy Group for the little kids!! It was very well organized putting us in groups so that they were not too crowded! They had a theme and did a craft, songs, books, toys and games with them!! All very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to go again!!

Yelp
We absolutely loved the Springville Art Museum as a location for our bridal pictures. We love to come back and remember the places where we took those special pictures. We called ahead and were able to come before opening time so that we didn't have to worry about other people. They have a dressing room in the basement, so I didn't have to wear my wedding dress outside, and could change there (perfect for our first look) be careful to not take pictures of anything you aren't supposed to;)

Yelp
Beautiful venue! The design and ambiance is spot on. Great flow from inside to outside, to view all the artwork. Very clean and clean well maintained.

Yelp
I had never been to the Springville Museum of Art. I had heard of it but had never actually seen it before until I went to it for an event. My favorite part of the event was the museum! From the moment we drove up, I was in love. The architecture is beautiful! The Springville Museum of Art is ART in and of itself. I wanted to spend half of my night analyzing the details of the construction. The individual artist's art hanging on the walls was beautiful, but I could have spent my entire evening taking pictures of the beautiful windows, the detailed doors, the texture on the walls, the skylights in the ceiling, and all of the other details of the museum! I wish there was a section in the museum dedicated entirely to the museum's history (maybe there is and I just missed it because we were there for an event); either way, I want to learn more about the history of this museum because it is so interesting and so beautiful.

Yelp
Impressive museum. Currently featuring the 46th annual quilt show, the museum has a bit of everything. Love the interesting metal sculptures. The railroad painting exhibit also included a play area for kids. Various historical oil paintings and another exhibit on "self expression" are also on display. Took a tour through the museum store before leaving. Nothing exceptional and pretty overpriced. Still, this is a museum worth spending an afternoon.

Yelp
Free and beautifully curated! Activities throughout the month for all ages and art levels. Layout makes for a nice meandering through the several floors, rooms, and areas. The water feature in the atrium is soothing and a great distractor for littles and old alike. The gift shop has reasonably priced prints and canvas art as well as other gift items for others or yourself (I especially like the kind for myself). It's a great way to get expensive looking art into your home for under $20 (I get frames on sale at Hobby Lobby). The 100 Dollar Show is my favorite event and the Artist Roundtable I recently attended in May was a good runner up. Ooh, in the basement, they put together free art times you can come with friends/family to create something of your own. We are lucky to have such a wonderful art museum so close to home!

Yelp
The Springville Museum of Art is my favorite art museum and one of the best in Utah. Home to an annual Spring Salon, the Utah High School Show, and many other annual exhibits, the Springville Museum of Art is really at the heart of the artistic community in Utah. Beyond the annual exhibits the museum boasts an impressive collection of artwork by early Utah artists including such greats as LeConte Stewart and J.T. Harwood, as well as work by Russian impressionist painters. The building itself was built during the Great Depression and was a WPA project. The architecture has a rustic charm and is very beautiful inside. If you haven't been to the Springville Museum of Art before you definitely need to visit.

Yelp
On a hot July Tuesday,I spent a delightful day at the Springville Museum of Art. This art museum emphasizes paintings and sculpture produced by Utah-associated artists past and present.Favorite paintings at this art museum were Edwin Evans'"French Country Scene"(Impression),Alfred Lambourne's"Temple of Rio Virgin,Utah",Mabel Frazer's"Venice Canal",Phillip Barkdull's"Symphony in Color"(American Expressionism),Louise Farnsworth's"State Capitol from North Salt Lake",and Henry Culmer's"Lake Florence,Utah".I also saw fine sculpture by Cyrus Dallin("john Hancock"). I relished their fine collection of Soviet Realist Paintings as well. Some of these paintings promoted the importance of the Worker and Socialist Philosophy.Favorite Soviet Paintings were Valve Yanov's"Lenin's Children",Ahmed Kitaev's"Just Graduated", Alexei Vasilev's"They Are Writing About Us,Pravda"and Ilya Katz'"Leningrad,City of Naval Glory" I also liked the this art museum's fine curatorial work and the helpfulness of its staff.

Yelp
We love this place. Not too crazy about the way the exhibits are run as they seem more focused on trying to make interactive children's exhibits than they do in preserving the rich history they boast and displaying the gorgeous paintings they have. For example, they took one of my favorite paintings down and put it into storage to make space for a coloring station. I'm also not crazy about the hours that the museum is open. The building hold sick a special place in my heart though, and reverent walks through it are the foundation of my childhood

Yelp
This place is a gem. It's free, and it's awesome! The building itself is a work of art; it's very unique and spacious. There's a lot of hallways and rooms full of different mediums of art, as well as an outdoor sculpture garden. If you have a spare afternoon and you're in the area I would definitely check out. It's not something I would drive from far away to see, but since it's free I give it 5 stars.

Yelp
Beautiful :) I absolutely adore that it is free and in my backyard. They always have amazing art circulating through as well . I love bringing my children and exposing them to such beauty .

Yelp
A beautiful venue with great prices. The events that I have been to there have been amazing.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere, in an historic building, to exhibit some great works of art at the new Spring Salon show. Wonderful art pieces that are well displayed. This year's show pieces are innovative and reasonably priced. Thanks SMOA staff for the great work.

Yelp
One of the best collections if not the best art Museum in Utah. I love old Spanish look to the building. The Russian exhibit they have right now is very impressive.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful museum with excellent shows and wonderful docents. When you pair the 'Art City' with a crowd of dedicated folk even in this small town the art is wonderful. This is not a major city museum but the run for the money is there or the run w/ the Bulls.

Linda H.

Yelp
The Springville Museum of Art is one of the real treasures of Utah and the entire Mountain West. It is a beautiful place with superb art that includes traditional, contemporary, fiber arts, sculpture, and more. The Museum does an excellent job of involving and serving the community, with many special programs spanning all ages----it has a fan base that includes children, teenagers, college students, growing families and seniors. Springville City should take great pride in being its home. If you haven't been there yet, you should go----you will love it!

Yelp
One of the best of the very few art museums in Utah, if not *the* best, with a strong selection of Utah artists, Soviet-era paintings, and fascinating annual shows. These include traveling exhibits, Utah folk-arts (e.g. quilts), high school artists, and spiritual and religious art.

Sharon H.

Yelp
My husband and I could not be more happy about how our wedding reception turned out at the Museum. The staff went above and beyond to make our night and event perfect. When we decided to have the reception there the staff were very clear about the rules and regulations (no burning candles, no touching the art work, etc) and we never ran into any issues. It's common sense, really. I would not change anything about our reception. Not to mention the Museum was the most affordable and classy place of the countless sites we looked at. The location made for spectacular photos and we still hear from people how much they enjoyed the reception and looking at the fantastic art on display. It was such a special day. Thank you Springville Museum of Art staff!

Yelp
The SAM is a magnificent and beautiful building - a work of art itself - and the exhibits year round are of the highest calibre and so worth frequent visits.

Brooke H.

Yelp
Very pretty environment, constantly changing variety in art, very nice helpful staff. My over all experiences have been great!

Kate M.

Yelp
The Springville Art Museum is a beautiful facility with very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. The art collections are very interesting and varied in nature. I lived out of state when I got married, but had I lived in the area at the time, I would look here first for a wedding and reception. The building really stands out among others in the area - it would be a perfect background and atmosphere for a memorable event. I highly recommend this museum.

Peter W.

Yelp
The big problem with SMOA is the Russian art. A sell-out that is also a wart and a very big over-weaning wart on the soft delicate flesh of what was a wonderful museum.

Angela S.

Yelp
The staff is awesome. I love the exhibits :) If you have a chance check out the quilt exhibit going on right now

Deborah B.

Yelp
This is a great museum! Free , family friendly, and beautiful. The volunteers have always been helpful when I have visited. The collection of Utah art is amazing and the Russian art is a pleasant surprise. If you look on their website you can see a schedule of events and shows and plan a visit during their Spring Salon or the annual quilt show or the state-wide high school show (some of my favorites).
