Great spot for a glass or two… or a bottle or a case. We have been in town a few times and will continue to visit. Knowledgeable staff, great selection by the glass, and a bountiful selection of bottle to open or take home. We are already looking forward to a return visit. Cheers!!!

Google
Amazing shop — Has a great (and long) list of wines including white, amber, rose, and red that are often hand picked by the owner. Andrea is so knowledgeable about not only the wines but also the wineries. They also have a selection of several daily wines and sell by the glass!

Eric Prudent

Google
Square is an amazing spot. Whether you're stopping in for a tasting, a glass of wine, or just to buy some bottles, you have to stop in. Andrea does an amazing job curating an amazing shop. They also do a lot to support local nonprofits - come here!

Google
I wish we lived a bit closer so this could be our neighborhood wine store. You won’t find your supermarket wine here. The selection leans towards the mid to higher end wine but there are bottles for under$15 too. Tonight, we called ahead to have a buttery but not oaky Chardonnay chilled between $20 and $30, and it was so fine that we came back for a second bottle.

Google
Absolutely wonderful! Great selection of natural wines and even better service. Knowledgeable and friendly!

Peter Deisinger

Google
Super knowledgeable and friendly staff and an incredible wine selection at very reasonable prices. Highly recommend.

Google
We love Square and all of the people who work there. They’re always so kind and helpful in answering questions and choosing the right wine for the occasion. Square has been our go-to wine shop since 2018/19. Their new(er) shop is beautiful and set up well for perusing the bottles or having a glass of wine with friends. I love their wine club also. Andrea curates them thoughtfully, including bottles that are tried and true while peppering in fun finds as well.

Google
Such a great find! You can buy wine by the bottle or glass. They did a custom wine tasting for us- very knowledgeable staff and incredibly affordable.

Yelp
We live in Virginia Wine Country and travel for wine all the time. Wasn't expecting anything along those lines for Madison. Was thinking more beer with cheese. But here we were mere steps from the Capitol building in an oasis for wine. Square Wine is an amazing stop for wine lovers to have great wine at the bar or buy retail and hang out with fellow wine loving customers and staff. Rarely do you get high quality experience combined with a non pretentious atmosphere, but the Square Wine team has it nailed. We will be back for sure the next time we are in town.

Yelp
Square Wine Co is our favorite! We love to stop before or after a date night around the square. Or, if we need a bottle as a gift staff are amazing at finding something perfect.

Yelp
Lovely sitting room in the front to sample your vino. Lovely spot. Stunning selection.

Yelp
If you're a lover of wines from all over the world. This is the spot for you! This was my second time coming here and the worker (not sure of name, but she's amazing) remembered me coming in a month ago! That may seem small to some but for me that's part of five star service and I would know having worked in luxury hotels. That just sets the tone for my visit! I'm a lover of good rosé. It's my weakness. They have this amazing German Rosé that you can get by the glass, or bottle. They have a wide array of wines to choose from, from just about every part of the world that produces wine. How do I know they're good? They select wines from smaller vineyards around the world, which is amazing! Don't walk, run to this amazing place!

Yelp
Beautiful wine shop on Capitol Square. Staff are so helpful and the selection is amazing.

Yelp
Very cute spot. My friend and I wanted to take in wine during an overnight stop in Madison. Great to see a place open in a Monday. Owner was very kind and help me sample a few wines based on my tastes. Very friendly and cute spot. Highly recommend stopping by for a glass of wine. Thank you for the great experience!

Jin B.

Yelp
Beautiful place ! I asked for an average wine for hotel rm consumption, owner suggested one with her honest and sincere pick ! Was wonderful and I didn't feel being talked down Wine was great pick thank you

Yelp
I knew as soon as I saw this on Yelp that it was exactly the wine shop I needed to find a couple out of the ordinary moderately priced bottles. Great location, great job.

Yelp
Thank you to the friendly and attentive worker who helped my husband and I pick out a great bottle of champagne for his parents 50th anniversary! It was delicious! We had no clue what we were looking for, since we're more the craft beer type. Yet you still managed to spare your time (when the shop was really busy) to help us navigate all the options. I sincerely appreciate you!!!

Yelp
What an amazing place! Owner has something special here! She knows her wines too! Great collection of wines at various price points. Sampled a few reds, then had an amazing Syrah. Great place to stop before dinner with friends! Who knew Madison had its own tasting room!? A must experience place!

Yelp
Stopped in today for the first time. The woman working was nice and made several recommendations, one of which I purchased. I thought the place was well organized and very shop-able. I will definitely go back and try one of their other recommendations.

Yelp
My "go to" for wine. Non pretentious and warm and knowledgeable staff. It's like walking into my second home when I walk into Square Wine. Andrea remembers what I enjoy, recommends things to try and is very conscious of my budget. (She is a great connector, too) She is all about supporting small family owned vineyards with excellent quality wines. Her staff is so attentive and super helpful. They also love my dogs and my Flanagan tries to visit every time we walk by the store. I LOVE their wine tastings, too! On Saturdays (non COVID times), they do afternoon tastings for free if you make a purchase. You can also hang out, bring some cheese, and sit around while you buy a few bottles. Super fun!

Yelp
Whenever I am on the square at night, I try to make a visit to Square Wine. The cute shop outlines what you will receive: great wine and a wonderful experience. We spent this Wednesday celebrating the life of my co-workers mother. Thorough emails I was able to set up the experience that allowed us to have an intimate time and be ourselves. Andrea did a marvelous job of taking us through the wines. Including where they came from, if she had met true owners of the vineyards and what we should expect in taste and smell. I've learned so much from her teachings that I will always come to her if I have a question haha. Their selection of wines is extensive. Even if you have only had one brand of wine, you will be able to find a new one you will like just as much. Be sure to stop in and say hello to the crew at Square Wine Co the next time you're on the square!!

Yelp
What a fantastic, charming wine store! I met Andrea the owner and was immediately welcomed. Their selection ranges across the globe; & the staff was quite knowledgeable. Even if you know little about wine, the staff will put you at ease & make the perfect selection. Great location, right on the Square. If you need a bottle or three ( which is likely, admit it) then go to this shop! I was also impressed with the prices, very reasonable. The next time I'm in town I'll definitely stop by!

Elise H.

Yelp
Andrea contacted me and asked us to come back as her guest. What a completely different experience. She was friendly, knowledgeable and generous with the sharing of tastes. So nice to meet an owner that has a passion for what she does. She could not have been more pleasant and gracious. A horrible experience made over with a perfect redo. Boiler Up!

Yelp
Square Wine Company is by far the most amazing wine shop I've ever stepped foot in. It's a home away from home, it's a way to explore the world, and you can't beat Andrea's or Emily's friendliness, suggestions, and knowledge. Two thumbs up and then some. Also-people watching and the people you meet while there, make for great stories.

Yelp
Are you in need of a wine connoisseur? A place where the staff truly love their wine and buys wine in small batches? Square wine is what you need! Located conveniently in the square (duh!), with wine tastings and other fun activities, it is definitely my favorite place to get wine in town! When my boyfriend and I came to Square Wine a week ago, we had a specific mission - to get a delicious red wine to go with our delicious steak from the Underground Butcher! The staff asked us our requirements and if we had any budget and quickly brought us to 3 different selections. We ended up going with her recommendation for Hunt & Harvest, apparently a current favorite cabernet from Napa. And she said it was a great deal for a top wine from Napa. And I'm in love with Hunt & Harvest. It is so deliciously rich and full-bodied. I haven't had such a wine that satisfied my thirst for a deep and rich flavor. Other than bringing us great selections from small wineries, square wine has also been great with hosting events! When Matt hosted our Pizza bracket finals last year, Yelpers had a great time at Square Wine, enjoying some delicious wine with the four finalists! Thank you for the great time! I can't wait to be back to try more wines :)

Yelp
I was attending Concerts on the Square and went in to look at wine. Right in front they had two coolers. The one on the left was "wine/blush under $15" the one on the right was "white and sparkling under $15" It's like they knew exactly what I was looking for. Also it was all on ice and real cold. Great stuff!
google avatar

Yelp
Man, I could happily spend every Saturday morning here at their wine tasting. It's delicious, generous, and educational. Well tasting exceptional lines, you have the opportunity to learn about the types of grapes they're made from, where they come from, why they taste the way they do, people that own the Vineyard, etc. Furthermore, they have a lovely couch where you can sit and spend the day drinking wine and chatting with friends (so long as you buy a bottle!) I can't count the number of times I've used square wines to introduce newcomers to Madison: so far everyone has been impressed!
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I happened to see this place during the farmers market. We went in, were immediately greeted and given the run down of the store. She also told us about the upcoming wine tasting that day for $10 but waived if you bought wine. We returned for the tasting. Unpretentious, a lot of fun, knowledgeable staff, helped us pick a bottle of wine -we will def be back !
google avatar

Yelp
Square wine company is conveniently located on the square with floor to ceiling windows in the front and great views of the Capitol. I haven't been here for any of the tastings,or the happy hour they do once a week, but have been in a few times to pick up wine. The space is inviting and has a trendy warehouse feel. As you would expect the wine selection is huge and prices start at about $13 (no two buck chuck here!) and go up from there. There is really something here for every budget and the staff is always friendly. Can't wait to get back here to take a wine class or do a tasting.

Yelp
I thought I knew what wine was all about, until my mind was once again blown and I fell further in love with the sultry liquid in many subsequent visits to Square Wine Co. They may not be the nearest (to me) or a bargain deal, but there's a reason I make the pilgrimage multiple times a month. Andrea, the proprietor is a sheer delight. She's informative without being condescending, willing to listen to your wants, and never pushy with up-selling. The selection, is hands down the best in Madison. Want to find a funky small grower natural unfiltered wine? Square has it. A classic white wine that your "Aunt Mary" would like? Got that too. Most of all I appreciate that, after a few visits, she's been willing to recommend things that I would have never sought out myself, but have been a great discovery. To this date, I have yet to have a boring or disappointing bottle. Consider me a groupie, so much so I signed up for their wine club, now that's trust!
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Great place to pick up wine you can't get at Costco, with a more personal touch. They were very knowledgeable without being pretentious, and offer $10 tastings on Saturdays to find out what you like. Stop by, ask questions, pick up a bottle of something you may come to love.
google avatar

Sascha D.

Yelp
My husband and I come to Square Wine every other week. We have not had a single bad wine from here. They get to know your palate so that they can curate your next order for you. They also work with smaller wineries to offer a selection that you won't find at a grocery store. It's pretty much the only place we will buy wine from. If you stop by once, I'm sure you'll understand why.
google avatar

Keri F.

Yelp
I canNOT believe I haven't yelped about this beautiful establishment!?! Maybe it's the wish that this fairytale land with welcoming sirens that playfully tempt me to the back of the store to taste of luscious nectars from exotic lands in multi-color glasses, be kept secret from the rest of Madison? Like genies from a bottle, each wine they choose to offer as a "tasting" creates a future wish for me: dinner with friends? lunch watching snow? romantic evening? These hard-to-find wines and future adventures await you here too. Please give this place a try. This is the only wine shop in Madison that the staff just "get" what you are looking for, wines are unique, and the tastings are waved with the purchase of a $10 wine. My extra tip is that these wines are mid-level prices (+15 $), but excellent on your head the next day (read: no headaches b/c not crappy wines). COME HERE.
google avatar

Lindzey K.

Yelp
Square plays a part in all my favorite Madison activities, it's a great place to pop in on Farmer's Market Saturday or before concerts on the Square. Go here! Buy wine, make friends, you'll love it. You might even learn something too, Andrea and Emily have been trying to teach me for years and while I still can't describe flavors with my words I like to think I have much more discerning taste now. Square has everything you could possibly need. Something big for my dad who only like cabs? Check. Something funky for when your bougie friends are in town? Double check. Rosé for all day? Triple check (seriously, there are so many rosés.). They also occasionally sponsor arts and crafts events, provided you bring your own arts and crafts. They do have wine though, which everyone knows is the most important ingredient to any DIY.

Yelp
I'll be honest, I walked into Square Wine Co with my nose turned up because I just moved here from Napa, CA in May of 2015 where I was working in the wine industry as a laboratory technician. Square Wine Co frankly knocked my socks off and impressed me. The selection was diverse in terms of country of origin, variety, and price point. The owner was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I loved geeking out with her as a fellow oenophile. I'm absolutely shocked to find such a great boutique wine shop in the beerland that is Wisconsin! Do not be intimidated by the prices up front, the staff will be more than happy to help you find the right wine for the occasion and price. Wine can be intimidating at times, but it's not as bad as it appears at first glance. These owners are the right minded people who will help break wine down for you. Square Wine Co also offers tasting flights, which is perfect if you want to learn more about wine. The best way to learn is to drink! I will definitely be coming back to chat with the staff, do some tastings, and grab some product from my favorite wineries in Napa. Easy five star.

Yelp
Came here for a tasting on Friday with some friends. I was super impressed! The space is really nice, it has an industrial feel, but really spacious and clean. The wine selection is unique and diverse, not something that can be said for many places in Madison. They have lots of tastings, and a very knowledgeable (and friendly!) staff. The tastings have a good variety of wines sampled, typically a little something for everyone. They had a bit of a crowd on Friday, and I think they could have had at least one more person working the tasting. There was just one guy pouring for everyone, and you had to stand in a line/crowd for your next pour. I am perfectly happy taking my time with a tasting, but I really enjoy chatting with the staff and learning more about the wines I'm tasting. This is tough to do when there are a lot of people being helped by the same person. I think the overall experience would have been improved by a few more people handling the tastings. I appreciated the spread of bread, cheese, and cured meat. I did want water to rinse my glass and mouth a few times, which they did not have. Lastly, I've been to many wine tastings and have never had such tiny pours! There was barely enough to get 2-3 sips of the wine. Most other tastings I've been to give very generous pours, so this was a surprising to me. Overall, I really enjoyed coming here. I think they could improve a few things, but given the lack of comparable places in Madison, I'm just glad this place is here and as nice as it is.

Yelp
Do you know the most widely planted grape in Italy? Do you know your Lambruscos from your Proseccos? Do you know the name of the mountain range in northeast Italy that provides vineyard elevations ideal for grapes like Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Teroldego? Me neither. That's why we have Andrea. She is *super* knowledgable about everything wine and can give you pairings Dionysus would be ashamed he didn't think of himself. Square has something for every price range and some nice beer and cider too. I've been meaning to get out to one of the fabulous wine tastings I keep hearing so much about. One of these days...

Yelp
I love this place and believe it to be a much needed addition to the capitol square. A variety of price points, super knowledgeable and friendly staff, and an excellent view of the capitol are just a few of the things that make this Square Wine Company a treat. I first checked out this place during a Friday night wine tasting and was pleased that the environment was welcoming and not too "stuffy". This is not your grandma's wine shop. It is hip, laid-back and current. Just like Madison!
google avatar

Yelp
Getting back into wine isn't easy after a year of deployment. It's amazing how much you can forget over that time when you don't drink wines from the end cap at Pick n' Save. I happened to be walking by this place and stopped in for a peek. What a fortunate occurrence. Andrea has compiled a selection of wines that could match what I put on my wine lists in previous occupations. It's a great line of well-made wines from solid producers at very reasonable prices. The selection goes from easy on the pocket bottles at $12 on up to crest just over $120. She also holds tastings on Friday evenings for $15. Here's to hoping she'll be a mainstay on the Cap Square for a long time to come.

Yelp
Convenient, charming and friendly neighborhood wine shop. Owner gave us a couple of personalized recommendations and they are wonderful.
google avatar

Bobb S.

Yelp
Nice boutique wine shop on the square. I like the fact they carry smaller and more obscure wineries. Staff has tons of knowledge and never steer you wrong. They have wine tastings on Friday and Saturday and you can buy a bottle in house and drink it there (and take it home if you don't finish it all). I must admit I never have the problem of finishing it there......
google avatar

Yelp
When traveling we always look for unique, local spots and we're lucky enough to stumble across Square Wine. Besides a great location across from the Capital building and near busy State Street, this little wine shop offers a nice variety of both old and new world wines along with well executed tastings, and expertise from its passionate and knowledgable owner, Andrea. We left the shop with a lovely Sauternes and will definitely return when visiting Madison.

Pavel P.

Yelp
Andrea, Gui & Co. are all fantastic. They know a ton and are considerate plus unpretentious about helping out those of us popping in. The events are always well done there, too.
google avatar

Albina Z.

Yelp
I'm just starting to explore wine, and this place is starting me out on the right foot. The owner is very knowledgable about wine, and at the same time very approachable, able to dumb it down for those who need it, which is very much appreciated! Diverse wine selection, and they do not try to up-sell you a bottle of wine! As some of the reviews mentioned, if you give them your name they'll keep a list of what you've bought in cause you just have to have it again. And for the first time ever, giving your name away does not mean you'll be flooded with daily emails!

Kaitlin W.

Yelp
There's an earlier review that says this place is not for amateurs, and I disagree. The employees are incredibly willing to help you find something in your price range, and their guidance is never pretentious or pushy - just passionate and friendly. You can find bottles as low as $12. There are tastings on Saturday with the $10 fee waived with purchase. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
I just happened to pop in here based on Yelp location but the woman at the front was super helpful and up beat helping to pick a great wine for me. Then, to top it off she directed me to this great little Italian place down the way (Osteria Papavero). I'm from out of town and the friendliness of these spots was superb! ...as was the wine choice ;)
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
This is my kind of place. Andrea, the owner, has a great selection of wines and she is always so helpful and willing to make suggestions or answer questions. They offer tastings on Friday nights and Saturdays after the Farmers' Market. Highly recommended!

Mark F.

Yelp
A gem of a shop with a great staff who provide customized service based on prior purchases and feedback. One of the best wine buying experiences I've had.

Stephen V.

Yelp
This is the best place to buy wine in the city. The level of expertise of Andrea and her staff is outstanding. Nearly all of my favorite wines were discovered here. Go in with a price range and a food and they will pair it perfectly. And then they'll remember what you bought last time and tailor new recommendations to what you liked.
google avatar

Makenzie B.

Yelp
I love Square and am so happy Andrea is in this great location. The shop is inviting, fun, and always well-stocked with good wine at any price point. Andrea and Emily are knowledgable and approachable. Whether you're a somm or buying your first bottle of wine, they'll get you something just right. Beware, "one glass" can turn into hours!

Kelli G.

Yelp
This place is the best!!! So great and a cute spot on the square. Best wine shop I have ever been in.

Bethany K.

Yelp
Square Wine is to wine what the Farmer's Market and Co-op are to food. If you care about where your food comes from, extend that same care to your wine and shop at Square. The prices, as you might imagine, don't start at $6 or $7 but closer to $15. Andrea carries wine with stories she stands behind. My price point currently is at that $15 range, special occasions excluded, and she remembers that when she helps me pick out a wine. Her education, experience, and knowledge of her wines make shopping at Square a pleasure incomparable to other, larger, more impersonal wine shops in town. Tastings at Square are quality experiences and come with a glass (no lip!) that you get to take home at the end of the night. It's the details like this (the lip on most cheap wine glasses has a negative impact on your ability to fully taste the wine) that make Square stand out.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
With 8 seconds to spare the lovely cashier saved the night by producing a wonderful bottle of Broadside Cab. which we are currently enjoying watching the move ins. Thanks
google avatar

Tamara C.

Yelp
The owner, Andrea, is a fabulous wealth of knowledge. If you don't see a particular wine, ask. She might be able to get it. She also carries a great selection of wines starting at about $11 and up. The store has some beers and ciders too! Friday is Wine Tasting Night for $15 a flight, you keep the glass and Saturday is $10 a flight. I'd recommend checking them out.
google avatar

Heidi U.

Yelp
Square Wine has such a unique offering of small grower wines - which is right up my alley. I love the relaxed atmosphere and the wealth of knowledge that I keep trying to learn from the staff. The wine tastings are a great way to start your date night! I frequently a stop on my day off - to share a bottle of wine and people watch via the front window, but then...I like wine!

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
I adore Square Wine! Andrea is so friendly, approachable, and willing to help find a bottle you'll enjoy. Great range in wines and prices. They have wine tastings from time to time too. My favorite wine/liquor store in town!
google avatar

Gerhart S.

Yelp
Andrea has an incredible palate. Years in wine sales and now on her own with an upscale, small vineyard selection that covers the bases from Europe to the Pacific Northwest. Food friendly or big, drink on their own wines. I just scored two bottles of an uncommon 2012 Loire rose that I thought no one was bringing into Madison this year. Ask for her help or browse on your own.
