Squire on the Square

We visited Squire on the Square and ordered the giant pretzels, schnitzel, and the Parmesan-crusted cod. The pretzels and schnitzel were great, but the fish came out undercooked. The staff handled it very well—they were quick to make it right, and I decided to switch to the pot roast instead. I’m so glad I did! Their pot roast is absolutely amazing, tender, and full of flavor. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Woodstock, IL. The great service and delicious food definitely made our visit worthwhile.

If you’re a Groundhog Day fan, Squire on the Square is an absolute must. A portion of the movie was actually filmed in this establishment, and getting to eat and drink in the very place where that “Drink to World Peace” moment happened was such a surreal, nostalgic highlight of our trip. It honestly felt like stepping right into the movie. The food was really good, and the specialty drinks were excellent, creative, delicious, and totally worth ordering (especially if you’re making a whole Groundhog Day weekend out of it). The atmosphere was upbeat and fun, and it’s beautiful inside , warm, cozy, and full of character. Even without the movie connection, I’d recommend it for a meal or cocktails. But with the Groundhog Day history? It makes it that much more special.

Unique atmosphere. Creative holiday decorations. Staff very friendly and you get a bowl of popcorn while pondering your order. Brisket sandwich a bit too chewy but sauce fine. Rueben had right amount of sauerkraut and dressing came on marbled rye. Generous amount of fries which were a bit soggy and lukewarm. Great scenic location right of historic square.

Was surprised to see this was a Squire! Great as always for food, beer, and atmosphere. I love being able to come to Woodstock and hang out here, knowing I will have a great dining experience. 10/10 will be back many times.

Great food and outstanding service whenever we visit the Squire. Tonight was Halloween and it was a fun night with The staff dressed in costume along with many of the customers. Paul the Bartender and William the Manager are exceptional. We look forward to our next visit.

Squire on Square is amazing. I appreciate the staffs and managers kindness to me even though I have autism and their food is amazing and really good. Owner Bob and manager Sophia is very nice. The restaurant is in good condition. Awesome boom boom shrimp tacos and the rice that comes with it is the best rice I’ve ever had. Must come back. 10/10.

This was fantastic, we just happened to see it open after checking out the decorations in the square. It was honestly stupidly good. The brisket mac b cheese was amazing, the ahai apps were really good,....Well everything we had was good. The inside decorations also just hit the spot. Would 100 percent recomend, and if i was even remotly local i would go here a lot. And dprobably be 500ibs.

If you like Gyros this is the place. The order I got was enough for 3 meals. Our waitress Jen was awesome. We were out to celebrate our birthdays she came with birthday cake unknown to us. Thanks for a GREAT LUNCH.

If you haven't visited downtown Woodstock, what are you waiting for? Squire on the Square had so much personality, with free popcorn for the table and charming medieval decor, this is a great spot for families. The flaming cheese is a must have and I the burgers are solid. The brisket tacos hit all the flavor points, but the meat itself appeared to be gyro meat. Stick with burgers and fries and enjoy this fun spot.

Okay this is a tough one to write. Squire on the Square bar area was used in the movie Groundhog Day, so we really wanted to give it a try. The atmosphere is very cool, the place is quite big and good for large groups and family meals. The staff was so friendly, and I mean everyone. From the hostess who seated us and immediately told us that Happy Hour was ending in about 15 minutes and to order as soon as we could for any bottles of wine, beer or appetizers. I appreciate that. Our server came over to take our appetizer and drink order. We ordered a bottle of wine and an appetizer, the potato skins. She was so friendly and it was a pleasure chatting with her. The potato skins were delivered to our table and were actually delicious. They were crunchy and the cheese was perfectly melted and topped with bacon. While we enjoyed our potato skins, several servers and the restaurant manager stopped to check on us, which was so nice. Then it was time to order our dinner, and we were going a bit light. I chose to have a bowl of the soup of the day which was creamed corn soup. Mr. Bee decided to have the tuna tacos. Our dinner was delivered in a timely manner and this is where the disappointment came in. My soup was supposed to be cream of corn. it wasn't creamed, it was creamy, with pieces of chewy kernels. There was no seasoning, it tasted if it was just corn and milk or cream, not even any salt. I didn't finish it. Mr. Bee's tacos were odd. The tortillas weren't fried, just warmed and flimsy. The tuna was not like poke. It was shredded, cut, cooked through and not really appetizing. He ate some of the tuna out of the tacos, but nowhere finished his meal and I have never seen him not finish tuna tacos. So when I said this was hard to write, it is. The staff, from the hostess to the servers who jumped in and helped each other deliver food and clear plates to the restaurant manager who checked in twice, they were excellent. Where the downfall is is in the food. Nothing after the potato skins was seasoned, poke tuna tacos would be amazing and the creamed corn soup should have been pureed, with seasoning, maybe a little bacon on top. It was all just so bland and disappointing. So I am giving the staff five stars and the food earns two. It could be great!

Positive note: staff is very friendly and attentive. Food......meh, Tried the caprese salad. Bland, no basil to be found..very disappointed. Grape tomatoes barely roasted....would not order again. 17 bucks they could have thrown in a slice of garlic bread or a bread stick.

Must be Halloween and some other cheese dressed up as saganaki Because what we had did not taste like the saganaki we get from authentic Greek restaurants in Chicago. Let's get into the spicy prickly pear margarita next...well i hope you don't get into it because it's a waste. The smallest margarita with no depth of flavor, I think I've had tastier margaritas road side tbh. Service needs help-moments of one good bartender shined through out of the three who served us (we sat at the bar). Positive note (wooohooo) the sliders were good and we would order them again. The blue cheese was pungent and the pepper on top did some wonders paired with the sliders.

A wonderful place! Extremely professional service. The food is absolutely outstanding. The French onion soup is authentic -- the best I've ever had in Chicago! And the flavor of the Greek salmon truly transported me back to Greece. Thank you!

I highly recommend the rum flight - blue knight, rum barrel, mai tai and zombie - and cheese curds to start. Service was quick and pleasant, ambiance good, not too loud. Grilled cheese sandwich and chopped salad both excellent. I didn't taste them but Ribs looked good and I was told they were great. Next time! Definitely the best place to eat on the square.

Love this place. Amazing appetizers and the Prime Rib has the best smokey flavor. Cool atmosphere and huge outdoor seating

The McHenry Squire is our pick of the Squires--routinely good, with an incredible atmosphere. Crystal Lake is as consistent as McHenry -- we've been patrons to both for decades...but post it burning down maybe 30 yrs ago, it lost that old town feel that McHenry still has. The Dundee Restaurant was fine (been a bit since we've been there -- maybe 8-10 yrs but we easily our least of the then-three..: Squire on the Square has a bit of its own character relative to the others, which is nice. A smaller, but semi-unique menu too which is welcome. However the food just hasn't been as good the 3-4 times we've been here so far. Last time we ordered the mozzarella stick (maybe it was mozzarella log) instead for the staple saganaki as we saw others ordering it...it looked great but had ZERO flavor. The wait staff in all of our visits have been mediocre...not good at checking to fill waters, etc...but the restaurant is still in its infancy...so we hope that will improve. Squire on the Square is the best of the Woodstock pub/bar food places by some margin...but there are some monks to work out.::expand the menu, work on diversifying the menu u a bit more. Training. Your wait staff to be more attentive. The layout is a bit more challenging too, and that s probably something that will be tough to fix as the building is set up this way...but the mai. Dining area has no room for the musicians -- they are I. The bar...and the bar has been packed every time we've been there that it just doesn't seem to work/fit. We'd love this to be our Squire as we can walk here...and I bet it'll be great when the warm weather comes...so I'm still hopeful that the (more minor than perhaps my review reads) kinks can be worked out -- lastly work on the mozzarella log thing..it looks great but needs more flavor. 3.51-3.75 stars :)

Stopped by SOS again for a quick drink or three and a snack. Awesome experience from the hosts, servers and bartender(Kami)! The atmosphere is warm and inviting! People were enjoying the day on the patio....enjoy the sun and warm with a cool cocktail or beer.

second visit / not as good. Not horrible but I ordered the same thing as I did the first time but it was no where near as good. Cheese hadn't even melted. It was a three layer sandwich - the top layer had a good portion of unmelted cheeses, then came a slice of bread then a slice of unmelted cheddar - very underwhelming. I had asked for the bacon to be very very very well done and on the side. The bacon came no where near well done and fatty in places. I told my server and just shrugged. Dining partner said the Asian nachos were good but had overwhelming amount of wasabi which made it a bit too spicy. She loved the coconut rice a lot! Other downside is there are only 2 bathroom stalls in the whole place for women. Not sure what was provided in the men's room but there are only one of each in the restaurant. It was an issue as I went back 3x and it is a small room and I couldn't get in the first two times due to a stroller and a group of women the next time. Our seat had an amazing view of the decorations on the square Our server seemed anxious for us to leave with requests like - you want your check (weren't done eating yet); want a box etc. we were pondering dessert but decided to go elsewhere for that as we felt a bit pushed out. I hope you take these comments in the spirit that they are offered. You have a wonderful spot, its beautiful inside but there is certainly need for some tweeting.

We recently held a special event at the Squire and I just have to remark on the perfect evening we had. The food was delicious, the room was set well for the 20+ guests we had, but most impressive was our server Ariel. SHE WAS AMAZING!! One server, 20+ people and she was spot on ALL EVENING with everyone's off-the-menu orders, drink orders and individual checks!! She always had a smile, something nice to say and made everyone feel totally comfortable. Kudos to a wonderful young lady.

Everything was terrible. My husbands prime rib sandwich was tuff. My ribs were so dry. I will never go back. Waiter took 15 minutes to get our drinks, they weren't even busy. If I could rate it at a 0 I would

Gone get a few times . They have awesome burgers . And u can eat outside and take ur pet with u . It's right in Woodstock square so u can check out other small stores and always have something going on in the square as well. Service is fast and only took 15 mins to make our order once it was done

Staff was very friendly, Restaurant setting was very nice and cozy. Food was not all that great, could've been better.

We've been here twice now. Valentines Day and for a date night recently. They have been inconsistent with food and service. While the location is great. We're just going to go elsewhere in Woodstock until we decide if we want to try again.

Squire on the Square is a great addition to the Woodstock Square. The uniqueness and history of the building is so cool! We were greeted with a friendly "Welcome in" and seated at the bar this time. Camellia and Sonya are great ambassadors of the restaurant. Friendly engaging and very knowledgeable about the menu. Had the Broasted Chicken - to die for good!!!! The crispy breading was great but the chicken was so tender and flavorful. Spoke to a younger gentleman, William - I believe a manager. He was great, checking in to see how the meal was and if we needed anything. The restaurant was hopping and we still had great service and great food. We will be back for sure! Sorry no photos - just enjoying our time! Oh and popcorn... that is so cool you get a bowl when seated and they will bring you more!

Not sure why it took 15 minutes to get our drinks they weren't that busy but I ordered a prime rib sandwich and my wife had the ribs. Both were dry as can be. We did have a coupon for $20 off for my wife's birthday even then it wasn't worth the money won't be going back.

Stopped in after being absolutely drenched in a thunderstorm while at the farmers market. All the staff was friendly and welcoming. Jennifer was one of the best waitresses I have ever met. The saganaki was pure heaven!

Lunch today at Squire on the Square. The food was really good! We had saganaki, smoked brisket tacos, filet trio on mashed potatoes, and gyros plate. The service was excellent. Looking forward to outdoor dining and many more great meals on the beautiful Woodstock Square.

The restaurant & our server handled our 12 person party wonderfully. Our meals were excellent & very reasonably priced. I loved my ahi tuna salad.

Love the latest Village Squire restaurant now occupying the space where Bill Murray drank to world peace in the movie Groundhog Day. Lots of comfortable booths to sit in and you are seated with a bowl of popcorn which is super fun. They feature a casual menu and have really good cocktails. I got the Turkey Club sandwich and my husband ordered the pot roast. Both were really delicious. Be prepared for good sized portions. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. Parking can be a challenge in the busy Woodstock Square. Suggest sensible footwear.

Service was slow and didnt know what she was doing .Loaded potato soup tasted and looked like it was made from instant potato mix. Shrimp alfredo was tasteless and watery.never going back...

This is a great family orientated place... Everything about it was amazing... From the moment you walk in when you get greeted to the very end.... And then who doesn't love popcorn. You have an actual popcorn machine at the very entrance and you can smell it as soon as you walk in - You get a bowl of popcorn as a little treat! Our waitress Katie was very patient with us... Especially since I had to translate the menu to my parents whom only speak Spanish. The food was phenomenal- I do have to say the chicken and waffles did. It's due diligence hit the right spot... The filet sliders pure perfection.... The Greek salmon Great taste! And the Greek soup wowzers.... The chicken in that soup!!! We're from Chicago and I definitely go back just for that Greek soup!!!! So it's definitely a highly recommended place to go if you're in the area... Thanks again, katie!

My son and I are huge squire fans, the CL location is amazing we go there often. This one needs some serious improvement. The French onion soup was awful, almost completely flavorless. The chicken tenders were dry and chewy. The "modern" atmosphere is awful, feels like it was decorated by a single 45 year old man who never left his moms basement which is sad given its location it could really play into the feeling of the other locations.

Had a great experience! Love that they kept the popcorn tradition. Their gyro plate was very tasty and you can't go wrong the saganaki!

Food is mediocre and overpriced. Service is slow. Drinks are ok. There are better options in town.

I've visited Squire on The Square four times now and every time the food is great and the service is even better. I highly recommend the asian chicken nachos or the giant pretzel appetizers. My favorite entrees include the boom boom shrimp tacos, ahi tuna tacos, and the prime rib - it's like butter. Can't wait for the patio to be open in the summer!

The staff here are friendly and hardworking. From the hostess to the waitress to the manager-everyone was great. However, they need to do better with their food. At our table, we had a steak dinner, and two Reuben's. Also had the famous avgolemono soup. The Reuben's were not made correctly and all we could taste was the sauerkraut. For a 41.00 steak it was not cooked as ordered and was extremely thin. Sadly, the avgolemono soup was not the recipe many know and love. It tasted heavily of lemon ( which is part of the recipe-but shouldnt be overwhelming) and the chicken which is usually finely shredded was present in large chunks. It was an expensive night out for food that is below the usual standard for Village Squire. Because it just opened recently, maybe give it a month or so to work out the kinks. The restaurant itself is pretty loud when there are many people dining.

Food was great. Had the prime rib grinder and saganaki. The kid loves the chicken fingers too. The staff was great and the ambience is really fun. Will be back.

So went to Squire on the square for the first time on Friday 11/15 night, there was a bit of a wait, but was expected. Was out for a friend's birthday, we were able to wait by the bar and grab some drinks while we waited for a table which was great. When seated, we were greeted by our server Cassidy I believe her name was, she was amazing, and very attentive! I ordered the prime rib which was very delicious it's only served Fri-Sun so I went with an option I wouldn't be able to try during the week. Overall the experience was enjoyable, the environment with decor was cool, I highly recommend trying this place out, and I will definitely be coming back again!

The food was just ok; same with service. I was there in their third week. Hopefully things will improve with time!

Granddaughter and I went for lunch. Order our appetizers and our meal. Big mistakes. She had Chicken fingers that had been fried in the fish oil. And I had a side salad for our entrees. We got our entrée first and ten minutes later our flaming cheese. Unacceptable. Then we couldn't use our gift card because they are not affiliated with the other Squires. I will not be back.

Food, service and atmosphere were great! Burgers were really good and waitress was really helpful. Great location and free popcorn!

I want to give this place a good review but I can't. Ambiance is dark, dreary and not welcoming. Our server was pleasant but overwhelmed or too many tables to handle. We ordered the 4pc chicken, took quite a while then came over cooked, dry and crispy is an understatement. We just had a bad experience. Also Food is just over priced..

Went to the new square I've always had great experiences at most of them so I was going to try the new one well I get there order my food they bring me my food it slips off the plate and lands on the bar and they didn't offer to redo it or do anything they're like oh the bars clean that's no different than a three second rule on the floor don't think I'll be eating there again so if you like floor food this is the place for you. GROSS!!!

Food was good but they wouldn't take the gift card I received for my birthday. Thank goodness I had enough funds to cover the bill. Before going there check their gift card policy

I love this new restaurant. First, the food was amazing. I ordered the pork schnitzel with mushroom gravy. My husband had the fish and chips and my son had the pub chicken sandwich. It was all delicious. One thing to defiantly order is the French onion soup, it's the best I ever had! The Bob's Mai Tia is also a must. Our waitress, Olivia, was great. Everyone was so nice, even the owners came to the table and introduced themselves.

HP is the best waitress. The restaurant is beautiful and the owners are really amazing.

The food was great as always at any of the locations this is my second time going to square on the square and the service is the issue. The first time that brought out my appetizer and entree within a minute of each other. This time I had to wait 5 6 7 minutes to even be acknowledged once I was sad the waitress took my order and since last time I just put in my appetizer in order to beer. The appetizer was brought out promptly and she forgot the beer she realized that a couple of minutes later and said I'll be back within a second and then proceeded to go to several other tables and I went to the bar myself to get the beer. The bartender when she brought me the beer said is there anything else and it's like in my entree I can wait a second and she's like well I'll just take my order and she did the kitchen brought it on out the waitress did not come back until my plates were already cleared by the boss hers and then ask if I wanted anything else and when I said no I was done took about 4 minutes to get my check, which isn't that bad. But this waitress basically did nothing and it was a support staff that did it all. I went to the restaurant on a Saturday before 5:00 so they were not busy at the time. By the time I left they were starting to get busy. I'll stick to McHenry and Crystal Lake but Square on the square lacks and service

We were there about 25 min. total. We arrived at 4:30 - (there was a time discussion because we did not have lunch, so opted for an early dinner) We were seated in a booth right next to the bar by a nice girl. brought some popcorn, and another nice woman brought us water. Then we sat. They seated a couple behind me 5 mins later - and they got their popcorn and water, and a waiter popped over with in 2 mins, and took their order. We though that was odd - since we had been seated for about 7 min. by this time. But - we thought perhaps ours was not his table. Another few mins go by, and another couple is seated behind my husband. They receive similar treatment to the people seated behind me. We stop the Hostess and ask, who is our server, because at this point we have been here 19 min, she wanders off, and we wait another few min. finish our popcorn and water. The experience has "gone off" for me by this point, and I felt awkward having to ask to be waited upon. we decide to leave, and as we walk around to the front door, the hostess says she is still trying to figure out who our server is. We tell her no worries, that we are just going to leave. It was all very strange.
