10 Best Places for Fado Music in Lisbon | Condé Nast Traveler

"Senhor Vinho hosts some of the greatest names in the game, with regular appearances from fado legends like Aldina Duarte and Joana Amendoeira. Because of its esteemed reputation, the club is a bit pricier than other fado joints. It also offers higher-end food, so expect to spend a little more time (and money) here. With traditional Portuguese tiles, antique tapestries on the walls, and white tablecloth, the rustic, yet refined, decor creates an elegant atmosphere." - Todd Plummer

This is definitely worth a visit while in Lisbon. Food: It’s a fixed menu with a few appetizers, mains, and desserts to choose from. The food was fantastic. Best shrimp I had in Lisbon. Cooked perfectly and full of flavor. I had the braised goat for my main and my partner had the pork cheeks. Both were tender, juicy and popped with flavor. Even the potatoes which seemed like just salt and pepper and so much flavor from the meat juices. For dessert we chose the almond pie and the mango mousse. The mousse was the softest most delicate mousse I’ve ever had. It’s also worth mentioning that I think their menu changes per season, so this was the food they had available in January. Atmosphere: The Fado music was terrific. There were three 29 minute sets each set with a different singer. Two female and one male singer and three guitar players throughout. We were there during off season on a random Tuesday so there were only 5 other tables, but even if the place is full, it’s small enough to create a wonderfully intimate experience. Service: This wasn’t your typical service, this was pure hospitality. Someone greeting you from the door, taking your coat and welcoming you into the restaurant. As soon as we sat down it was a good flow of the staff bringing the food, taking your order, etc. They have their system down pat and I felt very pampered. I almost seconded guessed choosing this place because some of the reviews on the food and pricing. The pricing was 67 euro per person for three courses and music. I personally don’t think that is bad for a full course dinner with an hour of entertainment. The wine was definitely the most expensive I saw is Lisbon, but if you don’t want to pay the price, don’t order wine. I didn’t order wine. I would not consider this a tourist trap. I got the impression that the staff and fado musicians are trying to create a genuine experience for tourists to share in their culture. Overall, a wonderful experience that I will remember forever.

I came here for dinner and fado thinking it would be a tourist trap, but it was anything but. The music was personal and mournful and dramatic and beautiful and close up, and the dinner itself was fantastic. I highly recommend this for a wonderful romantic night out and to experience a local cultural treasure.

Sr. Vinho Fado is a well-known Fado house located in Lisbon, Portugal. Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre characterized by its melancholic and soulful melodies, often expressing themes of longing, loss, and destiny. Sr. Vinho Fado is one of the most respected venues in Lisbon for experiencing authentic Fado performances. The venue itself is intimate and cozy, creating a perfect atmosphere for the emotional and heartfelt performances that take place there. The decor is typically Portuguese, with traditional tiles (azulejos) and dim lighting that enhances the overall ambiance. The audience is usually seated close to the performers, allowing for a more personal and immersive experience. Sr. Vinho Fado features some of the best Fado singers (fadistas) and musicians in the country. The performances are often accompanied by classical guitar (viola) and the Portuguese guitar (guitarra portuguesa), which are essential to the Fado sound. The singers pour their emotions into their performances, making each show a unique and moving experience. In addition to the music, Sr. Vinho Fado also offers a selection of Portuguese cuisine and wines, allowing visitors to enjoy a complete cultural experience. Google
What an amazing experience I had at sr. Vinho. A local friend recommended this place and I had the best time. Everything was absolutely perfect, from the staff to the food and music! What a treat! The chocolate mousse is one of the best things I ever had! Definitely coming back soon!

Great night with very good food and entertainment. The staff were very professional and friendly. The wine was quite expensive for the quality. Overall, very happy with the choice.

Google
Come for the Fado! The music was so moving and wonderful. The performers are truly fantastic and the combination of traditional guitar and Portuguese guitar was exquisite. We enjoyed the food and thought it was good for the price. It is not fine cuisine but it is perfect fare for the setting. You get a three course meal served over ~3 hours. We were very well taken care of. The service was attentive and respectful of the performances.

This was our first experience here and a fantastic one. We had the Sea bass for 2 which had mussels and shrimp. My sister has the veal. The menu is a fixed price menu where you choose an appetizer, main course and dessert. The performances were very good.

Yelp
Good food and ambiance with a fado performance after the meal. It was a fixed meal with 4 or 5 choices of appetizers, main course, and dessert. The kale soup was excellent, as was the polvo (octopus). Avoid the seabass as very boring. Almond cake excellent. The servers were very polite and helpful. The fado was mediocre and the chairs were total butt killers. They turned the light off during each performance. One singer turned his back to the audience and sang to the wall. The singers were talented but not a strong recommendation.

Yelp
Oof, I really wanted to like this place. So we've been eating at places with tasting menus and we looked forward to this restaurant that had been recommended by multiple friends independently. The concept of this place was to enjoy a meal while traditional fado musicians played. Waiter was quite nice, and that about where the good vibes ended. -ordered prawns as first dish. None of the prawns, none were deveined. Gross. Such a simple thing to do. -ordered risotto for second dish. Absolutely ridiculous amount of risotto. Couldn't finish 20% of the plate. -fado musicians. No sign of any musicians showing up until 1.5 hours after first sitting. Still, after all this this time, the musicians have yet to play a single note. They're lounging in a private section downstairs while a packed dining room is almost finished with first wave of diners. This place is literally billed as a fado restaurant. - filled our glasses once upon being seated. Never asked nor came to check on our empty glasses. -ordered espresso. Never came. -multiple tables were seated after us finished well ahead of us. So in recap: -Uncleaned prawns -Overwhelming servings of subpar risotto -No signs of fado music being played any time in the near future. -2 hours after sitting we're almost finished with 4 course meal and pretty resolved this has been the worst meal in our long list of restaurants in Portugal so far. -Have had better drinks and table follow up in my old school cafeterias. -Espresso never came -Convinced they just see through us. I'd say it's been a mixture of the restaurant having a bad day and having generally bad restaurant administration. Disappointing last meal of an otherwise great trip.

Yelp
You have to get past the name, which brings to mind the Mr. Steak chain of my childhood. What you'll find here is very good, traditional Portuguese food and beautiful music. We had a reservation for 9:00, and between our arrival and our departure at 11:45 we were treated to 4 sets from 3 different singers, all accompanied by the same two talented guitarists. You don't have to understand Portuguese to appreciate the music, so long as you can open yourself up the emotions the singers are conveying. The food isn't fancy or cutting edge, but it's prepared with great ingredients and great skill. And the staff were uniformly kind and thoughtful.

Yelp
An absolute must do while in Lisbon. Small quaint Fado restaurant ... the food is good, a bit pricey but well worth it. But wait, the staff is really sweet and friendly and the music, oh Lawdy Lawdy Lawdy..... amazing Fado. Do not miss this restaurant.

Yelp
Loved the Fado! Great elegant dining room. Good service. Would return here anytime to listen to the fado.

Yelp
This is supposed to be one of the most renown establishments in the city, though I must say we were quite disappointed by our experience here. Food - Everything we ordered from the menu was mediocre at best. I do not recommend eating here. We had wonderful dining experiences in Lisbon. This was by far our least favorite. Music - Three singers performed that night - two ladies, who were just ok, nothing memorable (sorry ladies!) and one gentleman (last to perform), I wish I remembered his name, who was outstanding. Overall - male singer 5 stars, everything else - 2. Sorry!

Yelp
BEWARE. This place is NOT recommended. The service was fair and food edible, but when it came time for the bill. There were charges for many items we never ordered or asked for. When you arrive they charge 12.50 Euro for the bread & olives, placed in front of you without ordering. Then the waiter clearly communicated the first cocktail was "on the house", but later a large charge showed up on the bill at 10Euro each. (60 Euro). When we questioned the charge , they played it off like a problem with translation. Clearly their typical ploy. We were charged 40 Euro for water ( that we never asked for)... etc. Do not waste your time visiting this place. Go elsewhere in the city for Fado.

Yelp
Based on rounding up, I give this place 5 stars. Love the food - it is a little expensive but you get that back with the amount of food that you get. The best though is the fado performance. I did a lot of reading about what is the "best fado" and the best experience to have while visiting Lisbon. I'm super glad we chose to come here because even though these performers are professional, it was amazing because they are professionals. For those of us Americans who aren't used to dining late, make a reservation on or after 9PM. Our reservation was at 8:45 and I don't think the performances started until 9:45. Definitely come! You won't regret it.

Yelp
One of the previous reviewers got this restaurant about right, I think, saying it's a tourist trap. I did resent being charged 17 Euros a head for food I hadn't ordered, in addition to the 12.50 cover charge per person. The decor is very rustic: heavy dark wood, low ceiling, beams, pottery everywhere as decoration. The clientele appear to be all tourists, although there was one Portuguese group which appeared to be an office outing eating a fixed Mayberry. The food is thoroughly average: perfectly adequate standard tourist fare in Portugal, but unimaginative and not particularly tasty. The house wine was too raw for my taste. On the plus side, the fado was good. I'm not an expert, but even I could see and hear the passion with which the ladies sang and appreciate the talent of the guitarist and mandolin player. The service was also very good: polite, efficient and attentive. However, on balance it was a disappointing evening for around 70 Euros head. I shan't be going back or recommending it to others.

Yelp
Pricey and touristy but worth it -- the performers are excellent and the "basic" looking menu actually led to the best meal I have had in recent memory. The garlic prawns were so delicious that I ate everything but the eyeballs (!!!). The grilled steak was spectacular (I'm usually apathetic about steak, but after a week in Lisbon, I couldn't eat any more fish). I enjoyed the marzipan cake as well with gila (cayote squash). They could even accommodate my mom's many food allergies!

Yelp
Amazing good, and fado music. It's not the cheapest place, but totally worth it, from appetizers to main entries and service... We love it!

Yelp
Great fado place! A bit expensive, but it is worth the evening. If you are going by car and don't want to go through the nightmare of parking in Lisbon, just stop at the door and they will take care of that for you. The service is amazing, the same friendly waiter talked to us in Portuguese, English, and French without any problems. The food is really good and they can help you out if you aren't familiar with Portuguese dishes. The wine selection is, of course, very good. And the music is breathtaking!

Yelp
As I pulled up in my cab, a gentleman from the restaurant came out to welcome me & open my door. I asked him how I would hail a cab after dinner since this is a pristine & quiet neighborhood. He said he would call a cab when I was ready. It would take 2 - 3 min. He was right! The wait staff were kind, attentive & friendly. The ambience was warm & pleasant. I opted for the price fix dinner. All was delicious. The sea bass was incredible. Now to the Fado. It was spectacular. There wasn't a trace of tourism! The very best performers in Lisbon were here in this very intimate atmosphere. What a treat!

Yelp
We were group of 6 people visited this restaurant on 23rd of November 2014: The restaurant itself is a pricey, nice place, the staff is proffesional, meal and wine was a delicasy, Fado music amazing, but then, they gave us a shock. At midnigt they stopped the music, laid a bill on the table - without asking for it and asked us if we want a taxi? They started to tide up table. We asked if they are closing and why? No answer... Everywhere is written opening hours to 2:00 AM and music to 2:00 AM. No excuse for that - never again....
