St. Angelo Bridge

We visited Ponte Sant'Angelo just after sunset, and it was an absolutely magical experience. The bridge is stunning on its own, but seeing it in the evening light was something special. The atmosphere was romantic and serene, with the Tiber River flowing gently underneath and the silhouette of Castel Sant'Angelo in the background. It was much less crowded than during the day, making it a perfect spot for a peaceful, picturesque stroll. Walking across this historic bridge felt like stepping back in time. It's a must-see landmark in Rome, but we highly recommend visiting in the evening for a truly unforgettable view.

We’ve walked past this place so many times over the years but never went it - the view was definitely worth it! Amazing history, and even better… wine with a view of the sunset over the Vatican! Tickets are inexpensive and the history is fascinating.

Many seagulls are perched on the stone embankment - a common sight along Tiber river, while historic Roman buildings framed by trees showing autumnal colors are on the other side of the bridge. Tourist and locals are enjoying their evening stroll here. The overall scene is bathed in a bright yellow light from the sunset glow, and the feeling was magical.

St. Angelo Bridge is a beautiful spot to cross in Rome, especially with its elegant statues and views of Castel Sant’Angelo. I enjoyed walking slowly, taking pictures, and watching the river below. The bridge it's absolutely gorgeous. This is the only bridge that goes directly to the Sant'Angelo Castle. On bother sides of the bridge there are some beautiful sculptures with huge angels. I highly recommend stopping here and see them. In the area there are some restaurants and coffee there you can get a Expresso or something to eat in the beautiful scenery.

The Ponte Sant'Angelo, or St. Angelo Bridge, is a historic and stunning bridge that crosses the Tiber River in Rome. I first saw it when we were in Rome recently and was amazed by its beauty. The bridge was completed around 134 AD by Emperor Hadrian and was originally called the Pons Aelius. It connected the city center to Hadrian's new mausoleum, now known as Castel Sant'Angelo. During the Middle Ages, it became the main route for pilgrims traveling to St. Peter's Basilica. The bridge's current appearance is due to renovations in the 17th century. Pope Clement IX asked the famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his students to add ten beautiful marble statues of angels holding symbols of Christ's Passion to the bridge. Today, visitors like myself admire the bridge's artistic beauty and historic link to Castel Sant'Angelo.

The bridge was all covered for renovation in order to get ready for the holly year. It's supposed to be an artistic bridge grossing the river of Tiber, but can't really see anything when I visited.

Rome and the Vatican City and St. Peter's Basilica in particular, are some of the busiest locations I've visited around the world. The Sant Angelo bridge being the entrance to the basilica matches that bustling busyness, all filtered onto one bridge! The bridge itself is gorgeous in construction, with many angel sculptures flanking the balustrades. Each of the angels was carved by several different Italian historical artists, so be sure to check each of them out as you walk by. The bridge also gives a great view of the Tiber river, which makes for some gorgeous photos with the Basilica and Vatican in the background. If you'll be visiting the Vatican or St. Peter's Basilica anyway, definitely take some time on your way across the Sant Angelo Bridges to see some of the sculpture and appreciate the structure.

Ponte Sant'Angelo is a bridge that crosses the Tiber River. It was built in Rome in 134 AD by Emperor Hadrian to connect his mausoleum to the left bank. In the Middle Ages, it was used by pilgrims heading to St. Peter's Basilica. During the Jubilee of 1450, the bridge collapsed due to the crowds of pilgrims and 172 people died. The bridge had to be rebuilt. It still contains 3 original Roman arches. In 1535, Pope Clement VII added statues of St. Peter and St. Paul along with ten other statues including Adam, Noah, Abraham and Moses. In 1669, Pope Clement IX changed the bridge. He tasked Bernini and his students to sculpt ten statues depicting Angels carrying the instruments of the Passion. Angel with the column (sculptor Antonio Raggi). Beautiful bridge with statues, street performers, brides, vendors in front of the castle. It's a real happening at Sunset colorful people and a lot to take in. This bridge was completed in 134 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian to cross the Tiber from the city centre to his newly constructed mausoleum, now the towering Castel Sant'Angelo. The bridge is made of travertine marble, is 445 Ft long & contains five arches, three of which are Roman; it was approached by means of a ramp from the river. The bridge is now solely pedestrian and provides a scenic view of Castel Sant'Angelo. It links the rioni of Ponte & Borgo, to whom the bridge administratively belongs.

The bridge is obviously beautiful. It's lined by angel statues and lanterns that really pop in the early morning and sunset hours. At sunrise this bridge is absolutely empty. You'll likely he one of a few people enjoying the entire span. By sunset, you'll find hundreds of people crowded along it. They'll mostly be tourists enjoying the area and panhandlers trying to sell you purses, bracelets, and others trinkets. This area provides a great sunset view at the price of being over crowded.

Ponte Sant'Angelo: Bridge of the Holy Angels, dates to 2nd century Roma, the Angels date to the Italian Renaissance. Each of the ten Angels holds Arma Christi, or instruments of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Angels came from the dreams of artistic genius, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. To the average tourist it's easy to miss these details, however, if you pause... breathe... and see... all the Angels are holding objects related to the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Bernini captured this beautifully! On my visit to the Holy See, I crossed Ponte Sant'Angelo a dozen times. And each walk was breathtaking. It's hard to explain, yet if I may I felt the presence of the mighty Archangel Michael... I could feel the suffering of Jesus. I then knew in my heart it wasn't the end of the world, but a chance for rebirth... a beginning... to become better people, better citizens of this earth. No, silly, I didn't have one too many glasses of Masseto Toscana, Tuscany. No, I wasn't hallucinating. No, I'm not playing televangelist. I'm just saying when in Rome... come to... Ponte Sant'Angelo. I promise you it will take your breathe away. This... my gift to you. Ti Amo. I love you.

A bridge of angels! As other reviewers alluded, this is by far the most beautiful bridge in Rome and given the amount of public art here in the Eternal City, that's really saying something. Just be careful, hawkers, scammers and pickpockets are all quite active here. It's hard to just be left alone and meditate on these beautiful works of art. I loved just hanging out and looking over the Tiber River and thinking about the stories and myths attached to this river and area. It's hard not to get lost in the sense of history here. It's a must stop in Rome especially while exploring Rome on foot.

An amazing area surrounding the castel and the famous bridge from the video game Assassins Creed. (the third game in the series) Great views, and you get to see a bridge lined up with statues that will make any art major lose their cool. This is a history rich in history and art, so be aware of that when crossing this bridge. Appreciate it while here. We almost died on our way here, thanks to a crazy Roman driver, but thankfully we made it. It was well worth it.

Was done with my tour of the Vatican and was roaming around town on foot. Couldn't help by stop and look like a retard as I try to get a decent shot of myself on this beautiful bridge leading to Castel Sant'Angelo. I really enjoyed walking along the bridge and looking at the beautiful angel statutes. Not a must-see, but definitely worth stopping by if you are in the area.

Rome's most beautiful bridge! In fact, I think this bridge is what converts Castel Sant'Angelo from a gloomy (former) mausoleum to a bastion of angels (as the name seems to suggest) thanks to the angels that lined the bridge. Take your time to admire the Baroque sculptures of the angels holding Instruments of Passion, or simply appreciate this beautiful bridge as a whole! Giorno o notte, there is perhaps no time of the day when this bridge is not beautiful. Even if you do not intend to visit Castel Sant'Angelo or even the Vatican (Gasp!), I highly recommend walking here to at least see this bridge yourself. Yes, this bridge alone is worth the trek!

Stunning bridge than spans the Tiber. We were drawn to this location on numerous occasions during our Roman adventure. While traffic on the bridge can be downright scary, the beauty of it cannot be denied. Pictures don't do it justice.

One of the best places to visit to see history, architecture, art, and beauty. Here was our experience. As we began our crossing of the bridge, we found amazing opportunities for picture taking of the castle and the angels on the bridge. As we crossed over, directly in front of us was the entrance. As we entered, we followed the signs to the ticket office and bought our tickets. Signs were easy to understand and follow. We saw artifacts like cannons and cannon balls preserved outside. There is so much to see. As you get to the top of the castle, you will have many spots for amazing scenic views for picture taking. Inside, you will see jaw dropping art and furniture. You get a sense of how life was lived back then. TIPS: There are two sets of restrooms. The first set of restrooms are directly next to the ticket office once you pay and enter. The other set of restrooms are outside the castle. If you are facing the castle, cross the bridge and head to the right of the castle. You will find several blue portable restrooms. They are free. There is an overpriced café on the second level of the castle. You may bring water and snacks inside the castle. There is NO drinking fountain inside the castle. 2 Hours is more than enough to enjoy and tour this castle on your own

One of my favorite spots of Rome. While there are tourists here, we're all fairly scattered here because there is a lot space. The bridge is beautiful and you can see the lovely green Tiber River along with the gorgeous view of Basilica de San Pietro. We've walked past here 4 times. Such a lovely stroll with the trees sprouting their green buds. One day we saw a wedding photographer shooting photos of a couple while a street musician sung love songs. Very nice. The bridge and the background of the castle is stunning.

Best bridge in Rome, bar none. Go around sunset on a clear day for spectacular views. Take lots of pictures of the sculptures.

Cool piece of old history. Really Rome is so filled with amazing pieces of the old world it is no wonder so any people flock here from the world over.
