St. Angelo Fort is one of Kannur’s most iconic historical landmarks — a place where 500+ years of colonial history meet breathtaking sea views. Built by the Portuguese in 1505 and later held by the Dutch, Arakkal rulers, and the British, the fort’s thick laterite walls, bastions, cannons, and winding pathways make you feel like you’ve stepped into history itself.
The fort is peaceful and scenic, especially along the ramparts overlooking the Arabian Sea, Moppila Bay, and nearby Dharmadam Island — ideal for photos, sunset strolls, and quiet reflection. The entry fee is very reasonable, and it’s open daily in the daytime, making it super accessible for travelers.
That said, while the fort has amazing historical significance and natural beauty, some parts show signs of overgrowth and could use better upkeep, which slightly dulls the experience in places. But even with that, the views, vibe, and sense of heritage make it a must-visit spot in Kannur — whether you’re a history buff, photographer, or just looking for a scenic walk by the sea.
