I effin love love LOVE LOVE St Christopher's Inn. I discovered them on my solo trip to Paris and since then (as sad, or amazing, as this sounds) I've been planning my European spring break trips around them. And, out of all of them, I have to say that the Barcelona location is my absolute favorite, by far.
Where to start..... hmmm...
1. The Staff. They are the nicest, friendliest, most accommodating, and informational group of people you'll ever meet. From the front-desk peeps to the bartenders, they were the main reason why my trip there was amazing!
First, I got there a little bit too early so I chilled at the bar since it was hours before I was able to check in. Around 45-50 minutes before the actual check-in time, I migrated to the front desk area where the girl at the front-desk not only recognized me but inquired about my bed to see if it was cleaned. It was and she checked me in EARLY without me asking for it!
Second, the bartenders are the most amazing group of people you're ever going to meet. From Jenni (who, by the way, is absolutely gorgeous) to Gustav (if you beat him at table tennis/ping pong, you win a bucket of beer, but nobody has so far), they will welcome you to Barcelona and befriend you until you no longer have any desire to leave.
Third, THE FREAKIN LOCATION! It's next to the Plaza Catalunya. It's not "a stone's throw" from the plaza, it's next to it. Um... I think that's all I really need to say about this place.
Plus, there's a Starbucks right across from it, but I never had time to visit it.
Fourth, the layout of the hostel + bar. They managed to build it so that it's really fun in the bar area (especially once the sun begins to set). I've met a handful of wonderful travelers/backpackers at Belushi's. The staff are used to people playing beer pong there (at least I would assume so since I played it almost every night there) and there's always a promoter or two hanging out at the bar if you want tickets to Razz.
Fifth, the free tour. I don't know if it's the hostel itself doing it or they purposely only operate in cities that offer it, but take advantage of the free tour! It definitely does help you become more familiar with the sights of the city (which is good for me because I have no sense of direction).
Sixth, the cost. You get your own private bunk bed (complete with curtains, light, and outlet) and it's ridiculously cheap. Maybe a little more expensive than some other hostels, but it's still ridiculously cheap. Plus, it's clean.
But, at this point, I don't care about the price... even if they raised it, I would probably still book beds here and not at other hostels.
Seventh, FREE BREAKFAST. Yes, the words that every penny-pinching broke college student backpacker wants to hear.
... there's probably more, but I feel as though my reviews getting too long already...
Now, some notes:
1. BRING YOUR OWN TOWEL. I know that they say that they offer you a complimentary towel (girls) but, when I went, we had to leave a 10 euro towel deposit to use one of theirs. Thankfully, I brought my own and didn't have to rent one, but it's something to keep in mind when you go.
2. GIRLS, BOOK THE GIRLS ROOM! I heard soooooooo many horror stories from girls who were staying at the coed rooms (mainly about the hygiene practices of guys) AND THE GIRLS FLOOR IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE COED ROOM.
- it's cheaper
- we've got a private "lounge" with sofa, a table, chairs, and a kitchenette.
