These Are the 7 Best Indigenous–Owned Hotels in Canada - AFAR

"Housed in a former residential school that operated from 1912 to 1970, this 125-room resort is a community-led reclamation of a painful history: the campus was transformed to create local jobs and income while educating visitors about the experience of residential schools. The property includes a health club, casino, restaurants, an award-winning golf course, an RV park and an on-site Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre that offers tours led by a residential school survivor, historical artifacts and films, as well as Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training programs to promote understanding and healing." - Debbie Olsen

The food at the St. Eugene Casino is extremely reasonably priced. It always delivers above expectations for the cost and is consistently delicious. The staff are friendly and make your time there very enjoyable. The free pop refills, big screens, and great atmosphere make it a fun spot to relax and enjoy a meal. I highly recommend checking out the restaurant — you won’t be disappointed!

The location and site are absolutely lovely. The service was very good throughout. I was disappointed that the main hotel restaurant was not open for supper during our 2-day stay. We ate supper late-ish on our first night in the casino restaurant, which was all right but standard pub-type fare. The outdoor pool and hot tubs were nice, but the hot tubs were not as toasty as they should have been. We stayed in a room in the Lodge side, and while it was fine it was also disappointingly dated. I believe they are intending to do renovations to these rooms in the near future, which is needed. I am hopeful the renovations will include moving the vending machines out of the main hallway directly in front of two of the rooms, as their current placement is quite noisy and disruptive.

We just got back from our traditional fall couples golf getaway! We chose St. Eugene because we've stayed there before and we loved the outdoor pool and the casino! We came for 2 nights and golfed one of the days. |Pretty much the only complaint would be our sqeaky bed (the bed itself was still comfortable) and when we went for breakfast at numa they took some time getting us in. (Im assuming short staffed with summer over) |Otherwise, the pool was clean, the golf course was beautiful and the hotel is so beautiful (ive only stayed in winter so never saw the beautiful flowers). I will stay again! They have such great golf and stay deals!!

Overall a pretty cool place! Wonderful to park the car, golf, pool, dinner and not drive anywhere. Have stayed in both buildings and while both are nice the Mission is a bit nicer (and therefore more expensive). Only downside was that our windows faced the event tent so no sleep until late for us the night a wedding was on. Do not recommend spending more money to stay in this building if there’s a wedding. I’d recommend the staff not book non-wedding guests in these rooms or warn guests about noise in advance and offer a discount. Numa restaurant is very nice. The golf course is great, fun for all skill levels! Casino is also fun, but it’s small and there’s only machines!

Absolutely one of the best stays in our 12 day journey. The rooms although aging were spotless for our party of 10 rooms. Service at all locations within the resort was phenomenal and no one in our group of 18 has any complaints. Food and service was excellently done. Couldn't be happier.

What we loved:|- The ground-floor, pet-friendly room was sizeable and very comfortable. The air conditioner and all of the appliances worked well. There was also a large balcony.|- The staff were friendly and helpful |- The food from the casino restaurant was excellent! It was delicious and the portions were quite good for the price. We appreciated that we could order the food as take out so that we could just pick it up and bring it back to our room. There are free non-alcoholic drinks (soda, coffee, ice tea) that are available in the casino, that you can take back to your room.|- The hotel grounds and garden were beautiful, with lots of space to walk the dog|- There was a large green space surrounded by hedges designated as a doggie potty space, with doggie bags provided, and an outside garbage bin.|- There is a Grab and Go snacks counter in the lobby where you can get light bites to eat and drinks. |- The pool was clean and warm. Towels are provided but run out fairly early in the day, so bring one with you. We loved that it stayed open until 10pm. |- The casino provided evening entertainment for the adults in our party. There were plenty of slot machines, with a wide variety in price ranges. Tip: Sign up for a free Encore membership and get $15 in free slot credits.|- The onsite museum is informative and interesting|- It is within walking distance to a gas station if you need to purchase necessities or snacks.||Areas for improvement:|- The only access to the pool area is through male or female change rooms. This may pose a problem for families with children of the opposite gender, caregivers of disabled adults with opposite genders, or those who are non-binary. |- There is no room service, except on weekends. So if you have a dog who can not be left alone you will need to order take out meals from the casino.

My wife and I stayed one night prior to a week stay at a local dude ranch. The dude ranch recommended the resort. Checkout is at 11:00am and we were schedule to get picked up by the dude ranch shuttle van a 2:00pm so we planned to enjoy the resort for a few hours. When making the reservation and when checking in, we were assured that they would they would store our luggage behind the front desk. Upon checking out we were told they could not do that due to liability reasons so here we are stuck for 3 hours babysitting. They suggested we leave our luggage unattended in the corner of the lobby - who in the right mind would consider that?! Will certainly tell the dude ranch not to recommend the resort for other guests. Not the service you would expect from a resort of this caliber.

What a wonderful place. A residential school, a most dark experience for the indigenous people turned into a fantastic resort to give back to the community. The stay was great, it is located close to many activities and adventures in BC. We enjoyed our time at the pool and we also adventured around the area. The beds were comfortable, the building was quiet and comfortable. The room was clean and modern.

Yelp
I haven't read other reviews but we loved everything about this resort. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful and there's so much history. We stayed in the KOA and it was fabulous! Everyone was incredibly friendly and very welcoming. We golfed one day with two young local guys. They were so helpful on the course, which was in impeccable shape, and every hole was more beautiful than the last. We gambled a little bit and actually won! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I attended a work conference at the hotel in April 2018. I worked in the area many years ago and remember what the old mission building looked like. I was quite impressed by how they renovated the building...much of the history and charm remain. It is about a 10 minute drive from both the local airport and the City of Cranbrook...roads that have sharp curves with plenty of wildlife near the roadways...it brought back memories seeing so many deer in the area. My room was in the newer portion by the casino. Getting to the newer rooms from the old mission building is a wee bit challenging as the floors are not at the same level...it was like the entire hotel was a split level home...always going up or down stairs. The room itself was adequate..it had everything one needs in a hotel room though I question some of its functionality as power outlets behind desks. The wifi was great throughout the resort which is always a nice plus. While I am not a golfer or gambler, the golf course did look nice. I did take advantage of the fitness area, pool and hot tub with the latter two nicely laid out with a view of the golf course. I was happy to have the opportunity to stay at the resort and it was a positive experience.

Yelp
We used to frequent the casino and restaurant and were always treated well. Our last visit was abysmal. Only perhaps 20 patron in the slots area, and 5 in bar area but somehow no one could get service at the bar. Security guards were doing their best to be unfriendly and intimidating by standing to close and glowering and us ladies while waiting at bar. No attendants throughout games area. Horrid experience when we asked to see the floor manager who just stood there blankly then told us we had to leave. Horrid experience in what used to be our favorite place to go.

Yelp
I'm very regret that I chose to stay at this hotel. Please don't make the same mistake as I do. What I saw from the website were totally different. In the website the room looks so bright, new and spacious. The real room was so small, dated and a very thin wall so you can hear everyone talked and walked pass your door since this is the Casio as well, you can imagine how noisy it could be all night long. Parking space is also an issue. It's pretty hard to find a parking spot since there's a wedding party, golfers, people who came here for the Casio and the hotel guests. Breakfast was even worse. We wait for a long while to be seated. Lots of tables were empty but uncleaned. Obviously not enough people. Finally, I don't think the management are gonna care or whatsoever. If I know that it gonna be like this, I would stay away from this hotel. It's very pricey for what you should get.

Yelp
This is a very nice old style hotel. Our room was overlooking the golf course and we were happy with the style and ambiance. The staff was helpful and attentive. Food was outstanding. Thanks for making us fell welcome. A shuttle service was provided to pick us up from the airport.

Yelp
I have stayed here dozens of times with work and I am always so thankful that this gem exists in Cranbrook. When the BC sales traveler usually visits a smaller town, he is relegated to a Four Points at best. Usually a Prestige and rarely anything in the Best Western range of hotels. St. Eugene's is an oasis amongst small town accommodations and is practically heaven by comparison to the options one has in Cranbrook. The scenic valley view can not be beat. You feel like you're staying on a cattle ranch. Well...a cattle ranch with a casino on site. Although the casino is tucked in the back of the hotel and does not detract from the overall ambiance unless you actually enter the casino premises. The outdoor hot tubs are a great touch and one of my favourite late evening pastimes is simply lounging and relaxing in one of two hot tubs - winter or summer, but preferably winter. I have never used the golf facilities but it looks like a well maintained course. From a non-golfer's perspective, it seems to beautify the grounds. The rates are beyond reasonable for such historic and clean accommodations. St. Eugene's has never ceased to impress me. A diamond in the rough and well worth what little extra you pay by comparison to less savoury hotels/motels in town.

Yelp
We recently states for two nights at this hotel. We stayed in the original building and the room was fantastic overlooking the golf course. Unfortunately because of the age of the building we could hear the folks on the bar Patio as if they were in our room. We went down to the front desk and were treated horribly explaining that the folks are " just having a good time and we will quiet them down shortly". WRONG ANSWER. The following morning we played a round on the adjacent golf course. The course is in great shape and we enjoyed ourselves. We then had lunch and went back to our room at 2 and housekeeping had not been by. That was okay cuz we were going to head down and enjoy the sun at the outdoor pool. We called down to front desk and said all we need was new towels. They said they would send them up. Well we got back to our room at 530 and still no housekeeping or new towels. We went to dinner and spent a couple of hours at the casino and when we returned to our room at 830 all was good. Upon check out we told the girl at the front. She was not very gracious as well as gave us every excuse as to why versus just saying they are sorry. They ONLY reason why a 3 star versus a 2 star is because the staff at the golf course were phenomenal.

Yelp
Great staff. Amazing course! Hubby is looking forward to doing 18 next time.

Yelp
Had the pizza at Fred's Saloon and it was marginal. Runny sauce . Also had the "famous" French dip...bread was good and buttery and seasoned...meat was cold and bland...I wouldn't order either again. Wait staff was barely conscious but that's about it. Brought the wrong beer on the 2nd round...

Yelp
This place is awesome! It's a gorgeous hotel with some charm and character. The staff was nice, the food in the golf clubhouse area was delicious, and the pool was great. Our experience was 5 stars.

Yelp
I was here for my brother's wedding Thanksgiving weekend 2018. The only positive thing I have to say is that the property was beautiful and my brother and his new bride. I was disappointed with the servers rushing our plates off the tables when we weren't even done eating. The table my dad was at, the legs suddenly collapsed without anyone touching it and just missed dropping on his legs. There was no hurry by staff or management to help us or even any sort of apology as it was clear the table wasn't set up properly. When we asked the management to pack the enormous amounts of leftovers because they brought all the meat at the very end of the meal and everyone was full by then, she said no, that it was against their policy. Are you kidding me, I have been in the restaurant/food industry for almost 30 years and I have never heard of this. Not allowed to take the food you have paid for, it sounds ridiculous. To top off my experience here on checkout day. I was going to join my brother for a bite before heading back home at the hotel restaurant but there was no room at their 4 top for us. I asked the waitress if she didn't mind if we could sit near him as I was leaving back to Toronto shortly and spend the last bit of time with him and his new bride. Her response was with great attitude, not the least bit of attempt to acommodate us and my young daughter couldn't eat breakfast as the hotel restaurant was our only option. Extremely disappointed that we received such poor service in all departments. Especially from management.

Yelp
Beautiful resort in the Rockies. Casino, restaurant, good course. Great spot! Lots of weddings in summer

Yelp
We came here for business and are neither golfers nor gamblers but can't wait to come back. We came with dogs and were put in 1 of the 3 dog rooms. You wouldn't have known it. The room was large, clean, well appointed, I can't remember a hotel bed as comfortable and there was a balcony. And it was easy to slip out for pee breaks as we were on the ground floor. Because it was not golfing season they told us to go on the course or down by the river to walk the dogs. Paradise for them. A massive dog park with geese to chase and all sorts of different animal poop to sniff. The food was excellent. They really know how to do smoked meat here. We had beef, pork and venison. Each better than the last. The Fernie Brewing Company Rye IPA was delicious. If you are going through Cranbrook do not miss this place. It was a residential school that has been transformed by the Ktunaxa people into something positive. Fascinating history and the views are just outstanding.

Yelp
Have you tried their breakfast yet? It is delicious - the smoked salmon rosti is beautiful & it is definitely worth trying the Bennie. It is actually a very good value for a stunning view and impeccable food. Points to note: The service are often newbies who aren't well trained and I would skip the buffet
