On the Grid : St Germain, Al Fresco, Mezzanine

"Right at the corner of Sol and Cruz Streets, St. Germain is one of Old San Juan’s most popular establishments. What started 10 years ago as a charming bistro, is now a three floor establishment that include two bars; Mezzanine on the second floor and Al Fresco on the top floor with a terrace. St. Germain’s menu is a mix of light and delicious salads, quiches and sandwiches. Mezzanine and Al Fresco are casual spaces where visitors enjoy chatting in its delightful outdoor terrace overlooking Old San Juan while drinking signature cocktails such as Basil Mojitos and the House Sangria." - Ana Jovane Serrano

We stopped in for dinner. Got a table right away and the server was friendly and helpful. Food was delicious and well prepared. A must stop if you are looking for something different from burgers and sandwiches.

I decided to try this restaurant because of the brunch menu. The restaurant opened up at 9am. I got there at 10am and they were sold out of the lemon ricotta pancakes 🥞 that fast. So I tried the st German breakfast. I didn’t like the potatoes because of the garlic seasoning. The eggs were ok and I didn’t care for the Italian sausage. The restaurant atmosphere was nice. I decided to give this restaurant a try because of their brunch menu. Unfortunately, I arrived at 10 am and they were already sold out of the lemon ricotta pancakes that I had been hoping to try. So, I opted for the St. German breakfast instead. The potatoes were a bit too garlic-y for my taste, and the Italian sausage was just okay. The eggs were fine, but I didn’t really care for them. On the bright side, the restaurant atmosphere was nice.

We set our eyes on St. Germain Bistro Bar walking around beautiful Viejo San Juan. The atmosphere was quiet and welcoming, Gladys greeted us with such kindness she made me feel right at home! I highly recommend the Knox it's honestly the best churrasco sandwich I've ever had, it was so juicy and soft. Gladys was so attentive again her recommendations are great hope to see her again the next time we stop by!!! Muchas gracias Gladys!

Everything 100/10. The specialty lemonades were perfection. The food was clean (not greasy or heavy), and great portions. The key lime pie was the best I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a lot!). Very very good. When I am in town again I will be back for sure. We went right before the lunch rush and didn’t have an issue with wait time but once it got busy it took about 20 minutes to get our check. We weren’t in a hurry so it wasn’t an issue but good to note. The staff were very nice, we spoke English and Spanish with them. I’m a little bit of a food snob and this place was EVERYTHING.

We really enjoyed our brunch here. We had Savory Toast with Salmon, Steak and Eggs, and Mint Lemonade. Everything was good. We will continue to return!

Google
Cute cafe!!! Easy to find in old San Juan! Food was good. Service was good, food is made at the time of order so it takes a while- be prepared! I had the st Germaine breakfast, I give a 7/10 it wasn’t hot when I got it, and my friend had pancakes she mentioned they were very good! I also had a hand pressed lemonade it was good 8/10! Presentation was 10/10!

Google
This was a popular spot, with people waiting for a table. Maybe, we were just unlucky. While the food did not really taste bad, it left something to be desired. The bagel was not toasted, the lemon pancake was undercooked and the cheese on the mallorca was overfried, and the pineapple juice was very watered down.

Jeff Bunch

Google
Heliecer, the bartender did an excellent job! My wife had the lemon ricotta pancakes she said they were excellent. I had the mallorcan, excellent as well. Try the St Germaine, it’s a win!

Clifford S.

Yelp
The food is delicious, very well prepared. Service is friendly and prompt. The ambiance is relaxed. Peaceful. St Germain totally exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this place for a casual meal.

Yelp
This was our breakfast spot the last day of our trip and it did not disappoint. Besides them taking longer than usual to bring out our food, everything was amazing. The service was great. The food was great. The ambiance was great. One friend got the lemon ricotta pancakes...sooo yummy and fluffy! Another friend got the vegetarian sandwich with eggplant and she raved that sandwich so much. She even wanted to save half of it for later because it was THAT good. When we come back to PR, we definitely will be coming back here!

Yelp
What a funky little corner. On one side is a place where people are lined up waiting to get in, and then you have this place. What an amazing little place. But I'm gonna share some things as I'm not sure who is running things, because when I brought up an issue with the bathroom with one of the two dudes up front, it was met with indifference. So my issues: - no tp or towels in the bathroom. There's only one bathroom for men and women so it can be an issue. - never received napkins or silverware. - the English menu on iPhone has a glitch so you can't see the entree section so use the Spanish version. My mahi wrap with papas fritas were excellent. The fries are probably the best I've had in old San Juan. My wife had this lentil vegan dish/dip that was so flavorful. Picture fail on that dish but trust me, it was that good that I felt it was worthy of a pic before I licked the bowl clean (kidding! I used my fries and fingers, again no utensils). I had a gin Rickey that was excellent. They have an extensive listing of drinks written out beautifully on this huge board. I think the chef may also be the owner as he was also popping out between rushes to help out. Honestly, those small little hiccups were nothing and maybe it was a new employee as they did have that deer in the headlights look as only 2 people were working the bar and seating area. I would definitely go back and I hope Others check the place out too.

Yelp
Great ambiance, cozy vibes but bland food. Salad had a lemony vinaigrette that was super runny and mixed in with my bread. Bread felt really stale and wasn't toasted. Eggs were fine, just salt and over easy - nothing fancy. My vegan partner had a sandwich with some mushroom - no protein sources for him. Overall gets the job done, nothing to write home about.

Yelp
A cute and quaint spot in old San Juan. The service was fast and our server was kind and attentive. The ambiance was nice, well decorated, quaint, and not super busy for lunch on a Friday. Had brunch and ordered the vegan steak sandwich and a coffee. The sandwich was delicious. The flavors all melded together so well. The ciabatta was soft and not difficult to bite in to which I really appreciated. The mushrooms were meaty and melted right into the sandwich. Would definitely recommend and would definitely have again. In general they had a good amount of vegan/veg options!

Yelp
Opted to have brunch at this place as they had vegetarian options for a friend in our group. It turned out to be a very popular brunch place where the line got pretty long. We were lucky and were able to be sat rather quickly before the rush. We started off with coffee, lattes, and mimosas; can't go wrong with any of that. Then, for the table, we ordered the TWO-WAY TOAST, BKF BURGER, EGGPLANT BLT, and MALLORCA. Minus our vegetarian friend, we all got to sample each other's food and we all agreed and everything was great. The food was fresh and just enough to fuel us up before a day of exploring Old San Juan. Staff was friendly and the gave great recommendations. There are also bathrooms available for patrons. The restaurant itself is open and airy with a lot of sunlight. Would definitely return on my next trip to PR.

Yelp
Solid food and drinks here! Service on our sangrias and margaritas was really fast and efficient. we ordered sandwiches for takeout and were pretty happy with what we got (the romesco sandwich). restaurant was nice and cool and the bathrooms were clean. decor is cute - lots of plants and greenery in the restaurant. definitely recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
Someone recommended the St. Germain, and we are really glad we found it. The food is fresh. The menu has a large variety of vegetarian and vegan options. We shared the V-Steak sandwich (which stands for vegan). I can't remember if there was a meat alternative, but it definitely had mushrooms. It had a nice flavor. It was served with a choice of a side. We chose tostones, which we've never eaten before. They're fried plantains pancakes with salt. They were awesome. We also had the Don Pedro Salad. It was a really nice salad - decent size, with greens, grape tomatoes, fried cheese, plantains, avocado, black beans and pickled onions. It had a flavorful, but not overpowering dressing. We were full when walking out. I'd highly recommend it.

Art H.

Yelp
The Americano and Latte were both excellent. The Bori Longa Burger was both spiced right and topped well. The overall flavor was spot on. The Pastelon was another winner with the dressing for the side salad being just right. Greeted upon entering and sat quickly. Service was very good. The place is charming, minimalist, and lively.

Yelp
St. Germain Cafe is a must try when in San Juan! My friends and I went back twice because of how impressed we were. The vanilla cappuccino with whipped cream was one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. The coffee was rich and balanced well with the sweetness of the whipped cream. I also tried the smoked salmon everything bagel and it was absolutely delicious. Our waitress was very helpful and gave us great recommendations. This was my favorite spot I tried during my stay in San Juan and highly recommend checking it out!

Yelp
Went to this place for brunch and it was just excellent. We had a breakfast sandwich (egg, ham and cheese) that was just excellent. It had a guava sauce that gave it a nice sweet kick. Coffee was outstation and the girl working there was super friendly. Very chill place. Will visit again.

Yelp
After a full day of traveling, the hominess of St. Germain was so welcome with its friendly staff and selections of comfort food of soups, sandwiches, and dips. Went with the eggplant marinara because it was my first real meal of the day. It was hearty and filling and what my body needed. Pro tip: cut the eggplant and mix in its garlicky goodness with the sauce. It's fried well so it'll keep its crunch and shape. It made me crave for a flat plate instead of the bowl the spaghetti came in. Managed not to splash too much tomato sauce. Happy hour from 3 to 7pm, $5 dollar drinks and discounts on the breaded eggplant and yucca montadito (which can be made vegan). Ask for Alex; he makes a mean margarita.

Ahmed E.

Yelp
Very rude waiter. Took orders from two other tables before us and had a very nasty attitude. Will never go there again. Not worth the looooong wait.

Yelp
After not coming here regularly like we used to back in the days- the last few trips here this is one of the FIRST places we come to eat. The food has changed over the yrs (like we all have) and the food options now are right on point, imo. The service is again, excellent and the ambiance has always been relaxed and inviting. I loved the eggplant marinara and the Mrs love the vegan 'steak' sandwich. Come. Relax. Enjoy.

Cole K.

Yelp
Excellent food! Great ambience. Excellent service! Many vegan options. If you're looking for great vegan/vegetarian food in San Juan, this is a great choice! They also have meat options if you are with a party of mixed dietary choices.
google avatar

Moriah L.

Yelp
I really liked this place. I got the V-steak vegan sandwich, a coffee, and a mimosa. The service was super nice, the restaurant is super cute, and the food is good. They have a good number of easy vegan options which is great since Deaverdura Nextdoor has gotten rid of all of theirs. The coffee was really yummy and the ambiance was good so I'd definitely come back - I'd love to try their brunch.

Yelp
What a nice place to have dinner with some friends... St. Germain Bistro & Café, was the perfect complement for a short stay in San Juan. The menu made it hard to decide among the exquisite dishes they have to offer... but the gently recommendations of its staff, made it enjoyable. I am looking forward to visit you soon!

Parul V.

Yelp
Cute little place. Brunch only Friday-Sunday. We are strict vegetarians. Great options and the fried items are not fried with meat (yes, we are picky like that). We had the savory avocado toast, veggie steak sandwich and eggplant BLT. We were very happy with our dishes. Very tasty. Don't bother with the French fries (my child insisted for his dish); they were not great. My family wants to go back for lunch before we leave PR.
google avatar

Autumn H.

Yelp
Best civiche in PR! Can't wait until we return on the next cruise. Service is great. Friendly folk.

Matt C.

Yelp
If you're not going to seat people who have luggage with them, it would be more professional and respectful to let them know upfront instead of making them wait 20 minutes and THEN denying them seating.

Yelp
Came here while on a trip to PR to visit my husband's family (all of whom are safe after hurricane Fiona, thank God). We came to San Juan two days prior but could not do much walking because of the older people in the group. My son had flown down the day after after us so we decided to go back and take him and our nephew along so immerse ourselves in the culture. I love walking around Old San Juan. The struggle, perseverance and history is everywhere. We basically just parked our car and went walking. After traversing the hills and historical landmarks, we were quite famished. We were looking for a place that had lunch food, like sandwiches, coffee and tea. Someplace that would be able to accommodate 3 adults, a teen and a toddler. I loved the look of St. Germaine. It's a quaint bistro that you could most definitely find on a sidewalk in France. It was bustling but we were able to grab a table. We had some baguette sandwiches, drinks and a couple of desserts before heading back to the car for the ride back to Dorado. The service was great, our server attentive. I miss the island, now more than ever. We've only had wonderful memories during our visits. I wish the people of Puerto Rico a swift and painless recovery. Strength and love for all.

Yelp
Really good options for vegetarians. Had dinner here with the family on our first night in Old San Juan, and everybody enjoyed their meals.

Yelp
Came by to St. Germain for lunch and dinner while visiting San Juan and really enjoyed it both times! A great and fresh variety of food on the menu, as well as cool drinks that are outside of the box. Both visits we started with the fried cheese that comes with a guava sauce. Great flavor and texture. We also ordered the mahi mahi wrap that came with a side. I chose the tostones which were really good. We also ordered a salad that came with more fried cheese (which was so good). Staff is kind and friendly. Prices are good and portions are very generous as well. Definitely a great place to visit while in the city!
google avatar

Mayuri A.

Yelp
We loved this restaurant! We tried the Cortado, Pina colada and catamaran latte. We then later ordered the scrambled eggs and veggie burger. The location, ambience and food were great but we were disappointed by the service. The servers messed up our order a couple times and also were very slow. I removed one star from the rating just for this.
google avatar

Sigrid W.

Yelp
The ambiance here is great. This place fits perfectly in the narrow streets of Old San Juan, with tiny restaurants on every block. Quaint and picturesque. We stumbled in here by accident during happy hour. Five dollar mojitos? Yes please. Delicious and full size. I wanted more for sure. I indulged in a fresh salad which was loaded with intesting ingredients, from avocado to pickled onions. M daughter feasted on a sizeable burger and tostones on the side. The tostones were done right. The menu is limited, but has interesting choices. Service is friendly and happy to explain food and drink to tourists like myself.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
I always have a meal at St. Germain every time I'm in old town. I've been at least a dozen times and have never had anything other than wonderful food and wonderful service.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
Really fun stop. Quieter than other touristy places. Great happy hour deal - friendly service. Had the fried yucca with chicken topped with the biggest avocado slices ever! Drinks were $5 per mojito - I had the coconut and coconut - both great!

Yelp
I've been to Old San Juan hundreds of times and didn't know of this place. It's not a hole in the wall, nor is it new. I just never came across it. Thankfully, the food tour I was on made this the first stop. I really liked it. We were treated to a cup of coffee and a ham and fried cheese mallorca sandwich. The sandwich was delicious. I would get that again. This restaurant has a lot of history to it. Back in the day, it was a popular hangout spot for Nationalist Party members, including their leader Pedro Albizu Campos. Our guide told us that on October 30, 1950 (if I recall correctly), agents raided the place to arrest him. Shots were fired; somebody died; he was arrested. The owners never covered the bullet holes on the walls (there are two above the cocktail menu board) to preserve that piece of history. Interesting stuff. I'm a local and never knew of this. It's nice to learn something new, especially when enjoying something delicious. The restaurant is vegetarian and vegan friendly. They offer brunch on the weekends. I think i'll be adding this to my PR Good Eats collection. If you are in Old San Juan, I suggest checking this place out.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
It is a nice and quiet place. Delicious. Made to order breakfast. Ordered eggs and avocado toast. Well done and delicious.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
This is a pretty bistro in Old San Juan. While other places we tried first were full for brunch, this place had a table right-sized for our party of four. The menu had plenty to offer including some vegetarian dishes but the service was very slow, even by island standards. The coffee was good, but it took 45 minutes to get... that tells the story.
google avatar

Agatha Christie D.

Yelp
Over priced, over hyped and just for people who enjoy live locally wanting something nice. Churrasco tasted gamey. sadly brought In because of friends or I wouldn't of chose elsewherez they do jave a 2hr all you can drink mimosa brunch on sat, sunday that would be worth coming to.

Talia A.

Yelp
Absolute amazing find! So glad we stumbled upon this adorable little bistro and gave it a try. The Funche was perfection and the drinks were sooo delicious! Highly recommend for a really great foodie experience!
google avatar

Leyla A.

Yelp
I passed by this place and decided to come back for brunch on a Saturday. We came in at 10:30 am and the wait was 5 minutes. Staff was very friendly and professional. The menu does specify that everything is made fresh and therefore it takes 30-45 min to wait for food. I have to say it was not fun waiting this long, so that's why I give 4 stars. Our food took about an hour to get. But food is very good, very delicious. If they can make it not that long to wait for just 3 thin pancakes, would be a much better experience. Other that that, definitely a great place to visit!
google avatar

Macey M.

Yelp
A delightful little place for brunch in San Juan! The atmosphere was quaint and comfortable and the servers were all so sweet and attentive. The food was EXCELLENT! Everything was clearly freshly made to order including my DELICIOUS eggplant blt sandwich! We both loved our coffee drinks (I got a hazlenut cappachino and my sister got a cortado) and it was incredible. The prices were also very reasonable $10-16 for main dish. I would definitely visit again.
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
So happy to have stumbled on this little gem. Delish breakfast, great food and superb service. We had the two way toast and the lemon pancakes w/an oat-milk coffee and a iced coffee.
google avatar

Bo L.

Yelp
Great for brunch. Chill vibe. As the menu says, food is cooked to order so relax! Two-way toast could use a little more avocado and a little more peanut butter.
google avatar

Gleicyane G.

Yelp
The first stop on our Flavors of San Juan tour. What a way to start. They served us coffee and 1/2 a mallorca sandwich. The coffee was good but it was the sandwich that was incredible. The mallorca (sweet bread) was fresh. The sandwich came with ham and local cheese. The cheese was fried which gave it a nice crunch with every bite. The sandwich had a delicious guava spread. I want to return and get the whole sandwich, plus try a few other things.
google avatar

Darlene L.

Yelp
Found this gem while walking. The staff greeted us and we were sat at a table. They helped us with making food choices. I wanted to try the quiche, but it is no longer an option. So we went for the BFK and Mallorca. The tastes are amazing. Each bite pops with flavor!! Such a cute and cozy spot to have a meal.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Excellent vibe and service. Staff was super accommodating. I went to order a coffee to go, I'm definitely coming back to eat. The food at the tables looked delish.
google avatar

Carrie P.

Yelp
Adorable place, great food, reasonable prices and wonderful service! One of the cutest restaurants in Old San Juan!

Yelp
We arrived at 12:30PM to the restaurant named Deaverdure and there was line out the door 20 people waiting to get in to sit and then order an eat. So we crossed the street to St. Germain Bistro & Cafe. OMG the ambiance is perfect for eating in. Very nice SOFT background music. My wife & I ordered the MAHI WRAP $14/each. Hers came w/side salad. Mine came w/tostones (my 1st time). The MAHI was ONE INCH+ THICKNESS. Tasted delicious. Took us a long time to finish our meal. The people next us ordered something else and it looked delicious also. So GLAD my wife listened to me and took on chance on restaurant that looked closed instead of waiting in line more than an hour just to get in @deaverdure!!! After 40+ years of togetherness sometimes the husband is a worthy companion and can be trusted to pick a restaurant.

Kristina B.

Yelp
Another great vegan and vegetarian find in Old San Juan. Tried the eggplant blt and the v-steak sandwich. Sometimes places are not great at cooking eggplant but not here. They cooked it perfectly. Everything was delicious and the service was fast and friendly. It's a smaller spot but cute and relaxed atmosphere. Do recommend if you're in a party with mixed diets as well as they serve other meat dishes too.
google avatar

Chelsea W.

Yelp
I had my first visit here in 2017, happened upon it one afternoon when our small group was tired and ready for an afternoon drink. We had Mojitos. They were some of the best we'd ever had! So, of course, when we all came back to San Juan in 2020, we headed here immediately to celebrate our arrival. Mojitos are still wonderful. We went back the next day for lunch. I'd been working on a lower calorie diet, so I actually had oatmeal, with fruit. It was supremely made: infused with cinnamon and cream. It was divine! My group all raves about their sandwiches and salads. It's a neat little neighborhood spot. You'll not be disappointed! Friendly staff , too!
google avatar

Shawn E.

Yelp
Everything was amazing!! The BFK Burger and the two way toast was delicious!! Nice a cool on a hot day and a decent amount of seating. Would definitely recommend St Germain for breakfast/brunch.
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
Best lunch in Old San Juan. I love the way they marry the flavors to make an intriguing (and most delicious) entree.

Rudy R.

Yelp
Good food and great service. The cocktails were also delicious. I went there with my son and gf. We picked this place because she's vegan and it had great options. Unfortunately, while her dish was fantastic, I got the cod dish which tasted off and my son got the churasco dish which came out chewy and not very tasty. So I think it's the place to go if you're vegan.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in Old San Juan. I was in this adorable part of the city for a week, and I learned about this cafe on a food tour. The guide recounted how someone was killed on the third floor and you can still see the bullet holes. I never made it to the third floor, so I cannot corroborate. But I was intrigued enough to visit. I am so glad I did! I came for brunch. The bottom floor is immaculately decorated. There was plenty of breeze to interrupt the hot Caribbean sun. The latte I had was delicious. I filled up on a great fruit and yogurt bowl and ate the Mallorca I ordered later. Both were amazing! Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jil K.

Yelp
Best spot for vegans/ vegetarians in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We searched around san juan for good places for vegetarians and ended up here. Their interior is great and archaic too. The servers are super nice. But the thing that takes the cake is their food! We had 1. Lemon ricotta buttermilk pancake - they were very soft, filling and delicious. 2. Vegetarian burger - the patty for the burger was amazing, it was filled with black bean and a number of different veggies, it was crispy. The fries were crispy, flavorful with a hint of black pepper sprinkle

Yelp
This is my favorite spot in Old San Juan. Everything is so good and healthy. No sodas, nothing that's bad for you here. They have funche!!! This is a very humble dish from the slavery days. The enslaved Puerto Ricans would make this dish for their families. This is a real gem!
