13 Hotels Where the Frills Are Chills

"Known as the Lambert Inn when it was built in 1872, the St. James Hotel became famous during its Wild West days, when such iconic and notorious figures as Wyatt Earp, Jesse James, Buffalo Bill, and Black Jack Ketchum were patrons. Located on the historic Sante Fe Trail, which Americans traversed as they traveled west, into land they considered a frontier, it was a rare spot for them to get a drink, buy supplies, or enjoy a bath and a warm bed.  It was also dangerous. Amid the everyday business of ranchers and cowboys, famous gunfighters played cards and stirred up trouble. Men died over poker and filled the ceiling with bullet holes. Some 26 people are believed to have died in the hotel, and many visitors, staff, and fans of the paranormal believe that some of them never left. Inside the restored hotel, which, with the exception of a modern wing, evokes that era, Room 18 is kept empty, since the angry spirit of a man who died at cars is said to still occupy the room. If you believe the ghost hunters who have visited over the years, including a few television crews, he’s far from the only spirit hanging around. The hotel can be found on lists of most-haunted places in America, but even if you don’t see a ghost, the history and atmosphere make it worth a visit." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
What an incredible stay! We recently stayed two nights in the Wyatt Earp room and had an amazing experience! The St. James Hotel is truly a hidden gem. The history, charm, and atmosphere are incredible, and the staff were all top notch. We ate several meals in the hotel restaurant and every single dish was delicious. You can really tell they take pride in everything they do here. The St. James Hotel is officially our new favorite place to stay, and we can’t wait to come back. Jorts N Fishin approved! 🤠🎣

Google
The taco salad looked small, but it was delicious and very filling. Service was great! Waitress was very attentive. The fish and chips were tasty, but the fish could have been crispier. The breading was no crisp and a little rubbery, but the flavor was good. Tartar sauce was excellent. We stop here to eat most trips on our way to Red River.

Google
I was just passing through when I stopped to check out the hotel and beautiful history. As soon as I pulled up I snapped a photo of the side door and windows. After getting home and reviewing the photos I noticed a figure in the second floor window. Please let me know who this room is dedicated to and if you can see what I see. Also, absolutely loved the craft of the hotel.

Google
Love this charming, historical hotel. I was in the Pancho Grigio room, 1st floor. Very quiet, bed is so comfortable, slept like a baby. All the furnishings are period, no TV, no AC, a big plus in my book, so peaceful. The staff are all so wonderful and friendly. The dining room and bar are very charming, best Margarita I ever had.Food has large portions, couldn’t finish it. I would highly recommend the St.James

Google
I will not eat in the restaurant again. It is really nice. You see the bullet holes in the ceiling, but one thing they do. If you order a entree you'll have to pay extra for the meat. Be aware

Google
You know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation. THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE RESERVATION! They also just don't have part of the menu anymore. A person in my party asks for the ribs, they just say "Oh we don't serve that anymore." No paper towels in the bathroom, and the wait times are extreme. If I could give zero stars I would. Guess what? I'm back. If you can believe it, all of the previous mentions were before I got my food. I ordered enchiladas after being told there was no brisket, and in the menu there is a nondescript "choice between red or green sauces." What they neglected to mention is the fact that the sauces are as hot as Satan's Navel. Everyone was unimpressed, which is quite disappointing for the price.

Google
What an amazing place! The new owners did a great job sprucing it up without changing the wonderful atmosphere. The history in this place of the old town west is amazing.

monica T.

Google
This place used to be my absolute favorite place to eat; several times a week. Now with the new owners the menu has been cut and prices raised. The food is sub par and the service lacks the friendliness and attentiveness it used to have. Twice baked rubber potatoes and cold meals that lack flavor. Such a disappointment.

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch. A friend had taught in the school in Cimmaron and we were curious about the place. This looked interesting and is off the main highway. A really charming place . Had a couple of good salads and the service was good. I would be curious about staying in the hotel sometime. A very historic and unusual place!!

Yelp
What a cool place to grab a cold drink after hiking in the Canyon. Ordered a beer at the bar and got to talking with the bartender about things to do in the area. She was nice and helpful with some suggestions. I closed out after the second beer and went upstairs to wonder around this haunted building museum. Some real famous names that takes you back to when it was lit by candle in this small mountain town. It is worth stopping in for a meal too, either inside or outside.

Gary B.

Yelp
Had lunch in the restaurant. The facility is great: clean, well decorated, the place exudes history. Unfortunately the service tarnished the experience. only three tables, but service was S-L-O-W. After staring at our beer order warming up on the bar for 10 minutes, I grabbed it myself. A poor woman was sitting at the bar for that entire time being ignored, and she had enough and left without anyone helping her. The food was average. Without the atmosphere, this place would not be worth a visit, but as it is, you should probably roll the dice and give it a try.

Yelp
A real gem of a historic hotel in a gorgeous, unspoiled region of Northern New Mexico. Updated beautifully, but done without losing any of the charm and authenticity that make this part of the country so special. My only regret is that we stayed for just one night. We will certainly be coming back soon.

Mark B.

Yelp
Loved the beef enchiladas and fried pickles. Ambiance in the courtyard with the fountain was a perfect touch. Happy Camper IPA says it all.

Yelp
We actually went in to have an late lunch/ early dinner. We went in through hotel lobby. Two desk clerks were sitting at the front desk looking at something while laughing and talking. It was as if we were invisible. Not a "hello, how can we help you, welcome..." nothing. We were clearly walking towards the back where the restaurant is, but they could not be bothered to tell us that restaurant was closed. That was made obvious when we saw all the chairs on the tables and not a soul in the restaurant. We walked back out to the lobby and my husband inquired if the restaurant was closed for the day. They barely responded with annoyance as if we were disturbing them. Makes no sense why people chose to work in a setting where hospitality is key, but lack the skills necessary to make people feel welcomed. Weird.

Yelp
The Old West still lives. Beautifully kept piece of history to add to your bucket list while exploring the West.

Laurie N.

Yelp
Enjoyed a fantastic Cobb salad. Ordered half size and it was large. The house margarita was fantastic too.

Yelp
I used to be a fan of the James once upon a time, but as of late all it has done is disappoint me. Most of the staff there act like you being there to eat or have drinks is the biggest inconvenience possible regardless of what time you show up. They've started stacking chairs onto the tables around us well before closing. A waitress straight up ignored one of the people at our table who showed up a little after we did to the point where he had to go track down someone else to serve him. Pauline has tried her best to keep them in check with their terrible attitudes and lazy service but there's only so much one person can do. One of the employees I've read about in some other reviews and she's just as nasty and condescending as they all say. The hours are totally inconsistent for the only restaurant in town and they will change without any notice. The food is fine but definitely not good enough to make up for the ridiculous behavior of the staff. Sad to say I will never be giving my money to this place again (I used to enjoy my visits)

Alex H.

Yelp
When we got back from Philmont and we were done with pre packaged foods we stopped here and enjoyed the best meal I have ever had. 10/10 keep it up!!

Yelp
This hotel speaks to you! The walls are filled with photos that tell a story. It is not a surprise that it falls in the history of the Wild West with people like Jesse James, Doc Holiday, Annie Oakley, Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill Cody and some I may have forgotten. The hotel is filled with history. You can walk through and see and read all about the many happenings that have left many to believe the hotel is haiunted. Needless to say we stayed in the newer section which they call the annex. Very clean and beds are comfortable for a night stay. We went to dinner at the connected restaurant and it was reasonably priced and very good. The whole experience was eerie but also interesting. The history alone takes you back... Nice place to visit with friendly staff and great hospitality.

Yelp
Great local place, good food, excellent values on adult bevs. Where the locals come to eat. Mon.- Wed they have dog days. Dogs and fries for $6. Lots of choices. Plenty of appetizers as well and a full bar. Limited but diverse menu.

Jill B.

Yelp
This is a lovely hotel. We have stayed there numerous times, but the last 2 times, the hotel has had a receptionist who is so "uppity" and "snippy," that there won't be another time for us. We made reservations for our favorite room. We arrived after a long drive to find the restaurant closed. Talking down to me like I'm an insubordinate child, she said "the restaurant is always closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays." We have not stayed there mid-week prior to this visit, so I didn't realize that. I have a medical dog (10 pounds) who is not a service dog and not a comfort dog. We have his papers and an ID for him. He has always been welcome there with the exception of the 1 prior time we stayed there when she was there; and this time. The prior time there was another girl there who took over for her and settled us in. We handed her our credit card, and she insisted on seeing our identification to ensure we are not using a card that is not ours. I am semi-retired but when I was with the FAA I traveled a lot; including to foreign countries; but was never asked for my ID when I tendered a card. She examined it, slowly and deliberately, like she was an expert analyst, and that's when I had enough. I said we were not going to stay there and she said we would be charged because she needed 48 hours notice to cancel in order to receive a credit back to our card. Interestingly, we had made the reservations only 24 hours prior, so could not have given her 48 hours notice of cancellation. This woman is so unfriendly, snooty and overbearing, that I won't ever go back to the Saint James. She is not the Queen of England; but it's evident that she thinks she has like kind of stature; looking down upon me as a peasant. She is a hotel employee and I am a well-traveled, well-dressed, well-employed guest. The hotel stays have been a lot of fun. The food is wonderful. The other staff members are so kind and hospitable. I hope those of you who read this do not plan on staying when she is the only one there. She will ruin it for you also.

Yelp
We stayed at St James for the first time. We had two ghost experiences the food was excellent drinks very reasonable , the staff friendly as well . Our ghost encounter was in middle of night 3 times someone stomped across the floor then the next morning setting in lobby the clock struck 9 and we got a strong smell of perfume and then it disappeared , I asked my wife did you smell that and she said yes. We will be back !!
google avatar

Yelp
We are very disappointed in your restaurant. We made a reservation for Fathers Day at 4:00 pm. When we made our reservation, we provided a contact telephone number. When we arrived today, we were told the restaurant was closed. We drove one hour to have dinner. Someone could have called to cancel our reservation. Someone could have apologized. We are saddened at the lack of respect that we received from your staff.

Rene C.

Yelp
I will preface that we were starving when we arrived at 230 in the afternoon. It had been a long day. Appreciated the fast friendly service. Most of the crew went for a buffalo burger - quite delicious. And one adult Mac n cheese with bacon and green chilies. Everyone enjoyed the food and touring the famous guest rooms afterward
google avatar

Cherie O.

Yelp
I had a bison burger but couldn't order it medium rare as the restaurant specifies it must be medium well. It came as more than well done and tasted so terribly dry. The addition of the sweet potato fries was welcomed as they were waffle cut. Hubby had flat iron steak which was ordered rare and that was delicious. He also had the sweet potato fries. We then shared the strawberry rhubarb pie. Average meal but we have had better.

Yelp
This place has soooo much western history. Stop in . Meet the friendly staff. See the vintage pictures on the wall on the first floor. Go to the cowboy bar

Yelp
A really interesting and unique experience. Tons of history. Unfortunately, I did not have any ghostly encounters. It is a bit pricy but really cool if you are into Wild West history and/or ghosts. The rooms are cute and comfortable. TIPS: Take the time to watch the video in the lobby - ask the clerk to turn it on for you. Call ahead if you want a specific room - I requested the Mary Lambert room because there have been experiences there (smell of perfume mostly) and also because it was closest to the most haunted room in the hotel (the room where Thomas James Wright was murdered and where some really strange ghostly stuff had taken place - it's locked and not for rent). Hang out at the bar for a bit - that is the location of the old saloon where 26 people were supposedly murdered and bullet holes were discovered in the ceiling. The drive from Cimarron to Taos (my next destination) was absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommended.

Karen Y.

Yelp
Super busy place so expect a wait. I had children with me so when they tried to sit us near the bar on bar chairs I told them I can't sit on those because of my bad back. We would have to wait an additional 30 minutes they said. I guess we will since I can't physically handle that and assumed we wouldn't be in bar chairs because of the children. Food took awhile but was great. We had an incident that was embarrassing but the bus boy quickly took care of it without complaint (we tipped him $20 later!) It's a fun hotel with history so walk the halls and check out the bullet holes still in the ceiling.

Yelp
The hotel IS haunted! But NOT in the way you think! No ghost-activity! But we got EVPs!! You have to be sensitive to Spirit to get the experience! I am a Medium! So we got the experience! We got the Spirits of Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Annie Oakley, and Buffalo Bill! But they did not do any physical things! Just talked to us! They closed room 18 permanently because there is a ghost in there! Think about it! How can a ghost be trapped by humans?!! They can't! That's a tall tale! We just stayed there. The owner needs to update the bathrooms! You can still keep the integrity of the history of the hotel without sacrificing modernizing the bathrooms! We stayed in room 23 - the only room that would accommodate a family of 3. I hated the old-fashioned tub! We did not use it! The owner needs to update that tub to a shower! They had two twin beds and a full-sized bed. I had not slept in a twin bed since I was young! Ugh! Our son took the bigger bed! Jason, my partner took 10-15-minutes trying to find the room! Another family apparently also had trouble finding their room as well! They kept rattling our door! Thinking that that was their room! It was not! The owner needs to put in an elevator for us older folks! I am 60! The railing was rickety and the stairs were steep! The owner needs to make the rooms larger to accommodate bigger families! Otherwise, bigger families cannot stay there! The owner needs to put in skits, have seances, have other activities sssociated with the haunted factor - if she is promoting the haunted factor! She needs to retrain front office staff! The short-haired blonde woman with the glasses was rude to us - me! I am Chinese. I stick out like a sore thumb in small towns like this! She was only nice to Jason - when he was paying the.bill! And because he's Caucasian! If you want to make your hotel more profitable, you need to change things! I did not realize at the time that I had gotten Billy the Kid's Spirit to come forward! And Jesse James, Annie Oakley, and Buffalo Bill. I am a Medium! If you are not sensitive to Spirit, you will get no haunted activity! There are no apparitions walking around! You cannot feel them! You cannot see them! Unless you are a Medium! To go there expecting things to happen is unrealistic! If you are NOT a Medium! Nothing physical happened when we were there! The staff needs to help visitors find their rooms! The owner needs to take away the shared bathrooms and make every room have their own bathrooms! We will not go there again! The locals stared at me when I walked in! Made me self-conscious!!!

Yelp
Food is fine. A little bland for my seasoned (seared ?) New Mexican palette. But the food service is lightning fast and the staff is great. They carry Pepsi products but make up for that oversight by having Dr. Pepper on tap. The ambience is awesome for this recovering Texan, complete with longhorn mount over the fireplace. If you're Buddhist, or vegan, you might wanna skip this hauntingly cool little taste of the 1800s in Cimmaron, as one of the decorative themes is animal mounts. But historians of all ilk should be sure to stop! I will be back! And bringing hubby and ghosthunting friends!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Wild Wild West Haunted Hotel! So much history happened here. Wyatt Erp, Jesse James. Great food. We had the frito pie and enchiladas! Cimarron Canyon and Red River great to visit in the fall! A must see area in New Mexico

Yelp
Always a great experience and amazing food here. Taking all the right covid precautions to keep people safe.

Adrian M.

Yelp
I first noticed this old hotel when I drove past it on the way to Philmont scout ranch in 1978. I was intrigued and wanted to investigate. But there was no time. I drove by again in 1995, but had no time. Then again in 2016...no time. Finally, I stopped in August 2, 2020 and headed for the patio for dining. I was asked to seat myself and someone brought me a menu in a reasonable amount of time. But that was the end of contact with staff. Several other tables were seated and orders were taken at two of them. But I was ignored. Eventually, I left. I don't know if this place has an anti-white bias, an anti-out of towner bias, or what their problem is. I will not be returning to find out.

Yelp
A few years ago, right around Halloween, me and my friend Laura watched The Travel Channel's "Ten Most Haunted Hotels in the USA" special. The St. James's Hotel in dusty and deserted Cimarron, New Mexico was right up there in the top 10. Although it has been a few years, I remember it like yesterday and can't imagine that it has changed much. Besides being haunted, the St. James has quite the colorful history. Built in 1872 by Frenchman Henri Lambert who was at one time the personal chef to President Lincoln, The St. James was conveniently located along the Santa Fe Trail. This location made it popular with gunfighters, gold prospectors, and all other sorts of folk making their way west. Today the rooms of the famous gunfighters such as Wyatt Earp are cordoned off with red velvet rope so that you can peer in and see what their accommodations would have looked like. It is a small wonder that the hotel is said to be haunted. There were at least 26 murders and God knows how many shootings and stabbings. Go ahead, just for fun, count the bullet holes in the ceiling in the main dining room. Unfortunately, the dining room was closed during our stay so we had to eat elsewhere. Now, for the reason we wanted to stay there. Rooms 17 and 18. Room 18 is so haunted that no one enters. Legend has it that guest James Wright stayed there and he had won the title to the hotel in a poker game but he was murdered, shot in the back before he could collect his win. Room 17, across the hall was the room of Mary, the wife of Henri who is said to tap on the window if it is left open and her presence leaves a fragrance of rose perfume. Our room felt like we were stepping back in time a 100 years. No telephone. No television. Our accommodations looked much like those of the gunfighters' preserved rooms downstairs. This place is like a time capsule. Naturally for our visit we stayed in room 17 left the window open for Mary and we went across the hall to jiggle the doorknob and stared through the keyhole of room 18. Nothing bad happened. At bedtime we brought out a Ouija board to facilitate communication with any ghosts that might be lurking about and guess what happened! Nothing. My friend tells me I lightly snore. She didn't sleep. She was too scared because of the Ouija board and was awake all night. Despite the ghosts being a no show, it was still really cool staying here just for the historical value. To you folks that happen to be in the area, as in, in-the-middle-of-nowhere, NM, take a detour and go visit. 2015 - Review # 15
google avatar

Lindy W.

Yelp
The St. James is always a delight - I've visited it several times through the years and spent an "interesting" evening in Mary's room. Apparently she haunts the room when women spend the night, but she left me alone. Their food is standard fare for a small town out in the middle of NM, good but not gourmet. It's the history and stories that make this a delightful place. I haven't enjoyed their patio in the summer, hope to someday soon - it looks like a fun place to spend an evening under the stars.

Don L.

Yelp
Very nice historic hotel. Incredible staff. Very good restaurant. We dined on the patio next to the waterfall. Although built almost 150 years ago, it was very comfortable, especially the modern bathroom.
google avatar

Phil G.

Yelp
Old western bar. We didn't stay here just stopped in for a cold beer and has 20 old bullet holes in the ceiling! And old gambling stuff. Really should stop and grab a bite or a drink!
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
Delicious meal in the last place I would have suspected. Veggie burger with Ted and green chili sauce was fantastic and my son, a chicken strip connoisseur, said these were some of the best ever. Thanks for a great meal out on the patio!

Stephanie D.

Yelp
We went here on a road trip from Albuquerque with another couple. We all enjoyed our time at the hotel. Our waitress was very friendly & told us about some of her ghost experiences at the hotel. Our food was excellent & the service was prompt. We loved exploring the hotel, we didn't feel crowded by others, often being the only ones looking at the rooms. The history of the hotel is amazing & it was cool to see the bullet holes in the ceiling of the saloon & the names of famous western folks who once stayed there. Our pictures were interesting: 2 photos by 2 camera phones,, one had nothing, one had an orb in Poker Room. Another instance: friend & I took photo in hallway mirror, the corner of mine looked like a bun or hair of someone, my friends photo had a blue dot in same place. Not sure if I believe in ghosts but it made it fun, along with the guys trying to provoke TJ out of his room. We all want to come back & stay soon as work schedules allow.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
What an amazing place. The staff was so wonderful and helpful. The rooms were amazing. Food was great. Bar was fun and vibrant. I can not recommend this place enough. Keep in mind that you aren't staying at a four Seasons. It's an old, amazing, historic hotel. And you get exactly what you would expect. I wish I knew the desk clerks name. She was telling us some haunting stories. We stayed in Buffalo Bills room. My friend stayed in Doc Holidays room and we stayed up till the wee hours of the night playing poker in the poker room and drinking whiskey. The most amazing "Wild West" experience I've had. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Great breakfast, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burrito. Cool hotel with lots of old west history.

Yelp
We stayed in the St. James during a summer 2007 trip to Philmont and the surrounding area. We spent three nights in the Pancho Griego room and found the lodging acceptable given the age of the property. As history fans we appreciate the stories others have alluded to in their reviews and hope the hotel is here for many years to come. We would be pleased to lodge here again. We ate in the Carson-Maxwell Dining Room once. I thought the food was okay but not spectacular for the price. We ate in Vera's Cafe several times (and also in 2008 even though we stayed elsewhere) and found the food and service fine. We will certainly come back. I spent more than a few evenings in Vera's in the early 1980s (back before it was a cafe, yo), and have fond memories of Vera's hospitality and of friendships made at the St. James.
google avatar

Jerome L.

Yelp
The St James is a nice historic hotel! The room prices are reasonable and the restaurant is really good! I will be staying in the Jesse James room the next time I pass through Cimarron!
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Come see a historical site where the Cimarron Cutoff leaves the Santa Fe Trail. Come for the good food and stand where the people of legion stayed. Annie Oakley, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Pat Garret, Buffalo Bill (Cody), and many more and there stories. Fascinating!!!
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
We stayed at the St. James Hotel, while attending our annual Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang gathering. While we were in the area, we had two meals at the restaurant. Both of our meals were very good. Meal number one consisted of a chicken salad and a rueben and meal number two was a cheese omelet and biscuits and gravy with an egg and hash browns. The only problem was the initial seating by the hostess. Once we were actually seated service definitely improved. Our waitress at our breakfast was better than the waitress at our lunch. Atmosphere is outstanding.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Stayed in the "new section" for an evening then had breakfast. Bar area is good and breakfast was reasonably priced and filling. Staff is nice. Somewhat disappointed in the room for what I paid. Definitely setting prices based on limited availability of other nearby places to stay and the Scout trade as opposed to accommodation quality. The 48 hour cancellation policy would have been a major detractor had I not just decided to stop in.
google avatar

Maggie K.

Yelp
We love the food and the service at the James!!! Sue is the greatest and so polite every time we come in. The Taco Salad is great for both lunch and dinner. The patio is the perfect place to relax and listen to music.
google avatar

Rick T.

Yelp
Had a decent steak and some history for dinner. Try the jalapeño ranch dressing. Much history made it worth visiting. little pricey for basic steak plate.

Stephanie V.

Yelp
I loved our stay. The history of this hotel is interesting and the period furnishings makes it more intriguing. The staff, food and rooms were amazing. Tonya is so sweet and was very helpful; especially when I locked our room key on the bed and she had to use a master key to let us back in the room. Take a stroll through the hallways and look at the pictures and read the history of some the visitors from the old west days. The bar area is also a nice place to relax and visit, but I was disappointed that the original bar was sold some years back. The current bar is still neat and is also very old. The food is delicious and they have a really good salsa. The gristmill was closed during winter. We saw many mule deer and wild turkeys wandering the area near the hotel. Take a drive on Hwy 21 from Cimarron to Springer - there are hundreds of mules, mule deer and wild turkey.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
During the summers of 2009, 2010, I frequented this bar more times then I care to count. Often times, hearing LAST CALL. It's a bar. With beer, and good bar food. The breakfast buffet is also good. Once I visited Cimarron over New Years and ate five or six meals in row here. I have to say, the food is pretty average. Though I do get cravings for buffalo burger with green chili and bacon every now and then. If you're on Philmont staff, this is the place to be. I never went to Cold Beer...this was closer and a little bit smoother around the edges. Good array of local microbrews. I miss the James.

Yelp
This hotel is an experience that should not be missed. So much history. The rooms are like stepping back in time. Great foid and great service

Where else can you stay for under $100 where Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, Kit Carson, Frank & Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, and Billy the Kid all stayed? Only here. Ask to see the video about the hotel if you don't already know the history, it outlines coverage from Unsolved Mysteries and some other news coverage in regards to hauntings, ie, room 18. The staff is friendly, the town is quiet, and this is a cool historic place to stay if you're exploring New Mexico at all, a definite stop. The rooms themselves are not deluxe-- they're old. It's a historical place, that's the draw. You have to *get* that before you show up, otherwise, you might be disappointed. If you're just rolling through the town of Cimarron, I'd advise at least allotting 30 minutes to check out the ground floor open rooms. If no one is staying in them, you can peer past the velvet ropes and see where these bad ass dudes stayed. Cool.

Yelp
This hotel is very creepy, spectacular, small town charmy, historic and all that. It's one of those historic hotels from the old west days. "Lucien Maxwell and Carlos Beaubien, Buffalo Bill Cody and his cohort, Annie Oakley, Kit Carson, Frank and Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid and Blackjack Ketchum. The notorious gunman, Clay Allison, allegedly danced naked on the bar,* once part of the present dining room which still has bullet holes in its pressed tin ceiling." -From their website A bunch of us went up there one night for a "ghost hunting" experience. Well, we got what we went up there for. We started out dining in the bar, because the dining hall was packed. The food was alright. Then after dinner we went on a guided historic walk. We learned about all the hauntings that went on as well as historic facts. We went into the old jail which is really old like late 1800's old. That was too much for me. It was also still the town jail up until the 60's which was really creepy. (leaving out all the tour gems not to spoil it) After the tour we played ouija and many creepy things happened there. We then went to stake out more haunted areas and got really spooked. Not one of us could really sleep through the night. The next day we learned we had a "bad" room where spirits supposedly make a unrested stay for the guests. Lots of cool ghost stories. Look it up or just GO. Only a four or five hour drive from Denver. Totally fun and worth it. I'm sure in the summer there's probably more going on like horseback riding and things of that nature. It's also close to a ski resort.

Yelp
You have to appreciate history and vintage to be at all comfortable here, but chances are you won't be comfortable anyways. Despite the nice inn keepers and quaint accommodations, the place was still a bit eerie; I know I didn't get much sleep. Try to get there before the sun goes down, driving the road out to the quiet town at night isn't fun, it's worrisome with the chances of hitting Bambi. Had breakfast in the cafe downstairs and it was decent. Very nice views of the mountains from Cimarron.

Yelp
Keep on drivin', keep on drivin', keep on drivin', almost there, keep on drivin'. It'll take you awhile to get to the St. James Hotel but that's why God invented mixed tapes and the travel version of Jenga. The trip is worth it (and quite scenic, I might add). In a country where anything older than 10 years is ripped down, it's nice to see some old stuff that keeps on keeping on. The staff was very nice to us as we peered around the first floor rooms that were open to see. They even suggested a video that explains the history of the hotel and covers the ghosts that are said to remain in the hotel. Unfortunately my date and I didn't have enough time in the schedule to stay here but I would've loved to have done so. Even if you can't stay the night, a 30 minute visit is definitely worth it. If you want Ritz Carlton-like rooms then go there; however, if you want a taste of the old Wild West and a potential ghost sighting or two, you can't beat the St. James.

Yelp
We had a great stay at the St. James. Everyone was very helpful and kind. The hotel is VERY clean and smells so good. Thea at the front desk went out of her way to help us. The restaurant is amazing!! We ate there both nights and highly recommend the trout and apple pie. The steaks are great too.

Yelp
Really great service and food. The meals were huge though and hard to finish. Really great quality food though. This was a neat place to look around also it has tons of historic information from the old west days.

Yelp
I had the huevos rancheros for breakfast this morning. I ordered red and green with sunny side up eggs. The let me sub my hash browns for veggies, the staff was nice, and the eggs were cooked perfectly but that's about where the good part stops. The green chile tasted like it had a lot of thickener in it and the red, even though they said it was homemade, tasted out of a can. The staff came to check on me only when I was about half way done and then left me wondering what to do with the check for a good 10min.
