How to Spend 3 Days Traveling Route 66 in Missouri

"At St. James Winery, Missouri’s largest and most award-winning producer, I enjoyed a free tasting flight (I did the dry red and white) and found the staff lovely; the tasting room was charmingly decorated for the holidays and I even won a candle in the raffle." - Matthew Kepnes

I went to the winery’s ‘Vines In Bloom’ dinner last week, and was so impressed! The atmosphere and general ambiance was very nice, and wine of course was excellent. But what impressed me most was the spectacular dinner! It was a set menu, but they graciously accommodated my vegan diet and prepared seriously one of the best meals I had ever had. The combination of the friendly, knowledgeable staff, and the creative chef, made for an amazing dining experience. The fact they went above and beyond to prepare a vegan meal (which I did not expect at all. I expected a salad!), paired perfectly with the wine, really created such a delightful and fun evening.

I'm posting this on April 3rd, 2025, because I forgot to post reviews after our anniversary getaway. We went to St James on November 13th, 2024. And I'm sorry, but I don't remember the gal who assisted us at the wine tasting. She was super fun, super sweet, and had great suggestions! After the wine tasting, we had a simple lunch of The Caesar Grilled Chicken Salad and the St. James Antipasto Platter. We shared both of them and were quite full. I have attached photos of the food, as well as the menus that they had when we were there. The service was excellent, and the food was delicious! Highly recommend! (Also, the back porch was closed due to the rain, but there was a cute, furry little guest out back doing some grazing of his own. See photo.)

Purchased some wine to take back home. I can’t wait to try it and if I like it I’ll Ben back for more !! Love supporting local farms and businesses 🍇 🥂

20241008 I enjoyed shopping here. I came for the grape juice and sparkling passionfruit and peach juice. I tasted all 4 of them and 2 very sweet wine, including their ice wine. I ended up getting 2 cases of concord grape juice and 1 case of sparkling passionfruit and peach juice. I also got some chocolate, coffee, and beer that I didn't know they had. The young man working there was so helpful. He helped me with the tasting and helped me shop for coffee and beer since I knew nothing about them. He also helped load my car with the cases. He was so polite. I had such a great experience shopping here. I will likely come back the next time I visit MO.

Google
Nice place to stop for a moment. Have a cute little gift shop section too. They allow you to try before you buy so, I tasted a few wines before deciding on the Mango Pineapple wine and a 4 pack of the sparkling strawberry wine. Enjoyable wines, friendly staff. Glad I stopped.

Google
I really enjoyed the wine and bistro here! I am still leaving a 5 star review, as there were plenty of other aspects of my visit that will keep me coming back. The only other employee name I can remember is Morgan. She did make our prior visit spectacular. She spoke respectfully, which I value. I do believe she is the one doing the chalk art, I spoke to her briefly about it. If you are guest considering a visit, I hope you have the pleasure of meeting her and enjoying the wine and art. It’s the little things that matter! I would recommend this place, however, something needs to be corrected among the staff…..I rarely leave reviews, but this just wasn’t sitting well with me. I’ve been here a couple times now. I would leave employee names, but unfortunately I’m not certain if I’m recalling names correctly; so I’ll just recount the incident first. I don’t want to incorrectly leave names. There seems to be a lack of respect with a couple of employees. One name I can confidently recall is Suzanne. I’m not certain of the other name. They were using inappropriate language and appeared to be talking disrespectfully about another employee. This to me shows a level of disrespect to everyone involved — including the guests. Employees are a representation of the company and brand. Is this what the winery represents? I’m unsure if management is aware of this issue. It did not appear to be a one time occurrence, due to the nature of how comfortable these two women were speaking. If management was aware of this prior to my message, then I hope there are steps being taken to correct this. If management was not aware prior to this, then that is why I’m leaving this review. To me, this is not something to take lightly. This should not be allowed at any workplace. This wouldn’t even be allowed in a middle school. Which, unfortunately, is the age she was acting. This behavior did not ruin my visit, but did put a damper on the afternoon. I’ve dwelled on this issue for a bit now, and decided I needed to speak on it. I hope to visit again soon when I’m back in the area. Thank you, Sue

My husband and I each tried our own wine flights. The price is really good, and they even gave our daughter complimentary juice, crackers, and a cookie. All of the wines I tried were very good, and the staff was exceptionally nice!

Google
Great winery! Also have delicious juices. Friendly and helpful staff. Well stocked gift shop. Multiple seating options both indoor and outdoor. Medium parking lot. Convenient location only moments from the interstate and the state highway.

Yelp
You 'n me + fine wines + picnic = nice time at St. James Winery! - - - - - - - - August, 2025 Visit My wonderful wife planned a getaway to Branson Labor Day weekend 2025, and we had a great time. Our second stop: St. James Winery - - - My wonderful wife had packed snacks for the drive and we decided to stop in St. James. Inside we learned they offer wine flights. We selected red and white and a fruity special summer wine: - 38 degrees north - Project 1970 - Explorer Norton Estate - Norton 42 - Raspberry Lime - Late Harvest Vignioles All were good. The weather was nice so we sat at a table outside for the picnic... a nice relaxing afternoon. Thank you, St. James Winery! ----- ----- -----

Yelp
This was an adorable little place. They have a large parking lot. Their wine tastings are only $8 and come with 6 half glasses of wine. If you buy 3 bottles of wine, you get the tasting free. My favorite seasonal wine was their apple Spice wine. It was perfect for the holidays.
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
They rolled out the red carpet for us! Then they found out it was our wedding anniversary, and doubled up the red carpet for us, if that's possible. We really loved the cherry blossom, velvet red, pineapple mango, Blackberry blueberry (one of my favorites!) and spiced apple! Of the ones we tried....lol

J C.

Yelp
The ambiance is so gentle and romantic. We could not have chosen a better place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The worker at the counter was so sweet and helpful. We tried all the wines you could think, pinks, reds, whites, fruits, dessert wine. My husband that isn't a wine drinker even found the kind of wine he actually enjoys while there. We ended up going home with 3 bottles of the chatwa (I believe). It was not to sweet, not too dry one of the most smooth pinks I've ever had. Thank you for an unforgettable experience and we cant wait to be back time and time again!

Yelp
My sister and I always stop here for lunch and to buy bottles of wine on our way to the st. Louis area each year. We had lunch as usual amd went to the store to buy our wine. A man was leaving with a bag full of things he just bought and as we walked in we heard a woman loudly say from across the room that they are closed and she rushed over to us and rudely told us there was a private event and to come back in an hour. We were passing through so wouldn't be there. All we wanted was to buy a bottle of wine. We weren't there for a tasting or tour but she didn't ask us this. Why did that man get to buy but not us? She apologized very rudely so it wasn't really an apology. We went to the gas station at the corner and got a bottle of wine.

Yelp
I came to St. James Winery on a tour with a friend. Everyone here is really friendly and they have a really nice gift shop full of local items. There were a lot of wines to taste but even the ones they say are more dry were too sweet for me. This tends to be the case in most Missouri wineries they are just too fruit forward for me. What I really enjoyed the most was the winery tour. The history was really interesting and our tour guide was so knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Excellent producer of both sweet and dry wines from Missouri. It's a challenging place to make dry wines, so their efforts are particularly noteworthy. The tasting bar offer the opportunity to try any five of their vast selection for a mere five dollars. My favorites are their Chambourcin and Norton, but if you like something with a touch of sweetness, the Pink Catawba and Concord are the way to go.
google avatar

Brien M.

Yelp
$5 flight wine tasting Friendly staff Incredible gift shop Super clean restroom I loved only one wine and it's coming with me. My partner picked out a sweet one and several random items are in our shopping bag. Easy to reach off the highway and a fun stop.
google avatar

Alisa O.

Yelp
Overall, from my experience the service wasn't measurable to other wineries. The location was right off the interstate, so a lot of road noise sitting on the patio. We were served, but previously had to go inside to order and then remind the staff where we were after waiting. The wine was sweet, so if you prefer sweet I recommend. I prefer more oak and dry reds, so wasn't throughly impressed.
google avatar

Lee E.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect really. I was hoping for something more. I don't like "fruit wine" so that perhaps cancelled me from the start. Their whites where lacking in any real flavor or nose. Nice building and nice folks, however.
google avatar

Yelp
I am not a sommelier. While I've spent weeks tasting the the finest wines in the Moselle Valley, I'm kind of wine dumb. I know what I like and can pair a few to food one eats while in blue jeans and boots out near the barn. This is a place you should hit up when in the area. THEY can help you out and make you happy without it costing you a few months in Europe. They have a reasonable selection for sale and plenty of suggestions and samples to help you on your Sommelier Apprenticeship. They also have a lot of cool wine accessories and gizmos to make it appear you know your stuff. There are tasting tours available to help you learn to baffle those like me. Prices are reasonable and you can order online as they ship to most states. They even have some snacks you can eat while traveling even if you have to keep the bottles corked.

Yelp
St. James is well known for their fruitwines, and since i am looking for outdoorsy type activities to do this summer (mostly in deference to social distancing guidlines, but also to take advange of sunny weather), i thought a winery visit would be just the ticket. However, and im not sure how i didnt realize this, it is a roadside winery. As in, right on I-44. Not the prettiest place to sit and sip, so I'm knocking for atmosphere. As for health and safety precautions, employees all are wearing masks and gloves, and instead of standing at a bar for a tasting, you can purchase a flight for 5 dollars (see pic) and sit outside at shaded tables. I did two rounds, and the sommelier the second time was much better than the first--answered more questions (tho also i get being weird in this time about a lot of face to face interactions? Esp since customers were not required to also wear masks while inside) I thought the oyster crackers that came as a palette cleanser were phenomenal?? So buttery. They are probably just out of a box - and i was hungry - but tasty nonetheless. The wines run on the sweeter side, and i wound up purchasing 2 bottles of the seasonal strawberry rosé (my early 20s younger sibling will like it), since they were running a BOGO sale. There is no case discount, unless you are a member. Probably i will not be back, as i can pick up some offerings locally and do not need to make a special trip out.

Yelp
Stopped in while traveling Route 66. So glad we did. Friendly staff and good sweet wine. A fun spot and good tasting. Bought 5 bottles. Blackberry was our favorite but other flavors good as well. So glad we stopped in.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place! I really do. And I LOOOOVE WINE! Staff is way cool and knowledgeable. They don't wine snob you, or try to hurry you along. Enjoying yourself is hard not to do here.

Yelp
I've been seeing and occasionally enjoying St. James Winery wines at my local grocery store for years. Now that I've been to the winery, I'm content to stick with the grocery store. Turns out the winery is right off the highway. No vineyards, no woods, no ambiance. They've got quite a few tables outside--thank goodness for that in these covid times -- and a restaurant and bar are on the other side of the parking lot. But this feels more like a winery outlet than any other I've visited. The gift shop was full of not only wine and wine accessories, but also tea. That's almost too boutique-y for me, but I did buy three bags of tea, so I guess it isn't! Tastings are a flight of five wines for $5. Comes with buttery oyster crackers. We each did two flights--one before we ate and one after. The first employee who made the flights was not chatty or outgoing. The second employee would answer questions when we asked. Neither tried to recommend or educate us on any of the wines. I tried more sweet wines than dry. St. James has some yummy fruit wines. I bought three bottles: two were part of a buy-one-get-one-free special and one was a strawberry wine I'd had previously and enjoyed. It's not worth a drive from St. Louis to go to this winery alone, but paired with another winery in St. James, Heinrichhaus, it is.
google avatar

Beth E.

Yelp
This is one of the few wineries that still gives you free samples. We like dry wines, so tried them all, and found them to be just ok. The non-alcoholic fruit juices were actually very good, and if we hadn't been flying, we would have bought some. There are many, many choices of wines and there are many gifts you can buy. Worth a stop if you are in the area.
google avatar

Tiffany G.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience wine tasting here last night. The tasting is free and you get to try six wines. However, our hostess allowed us to try some of the wines mixed and gave us ideas for different mixed drinks. We ended up buying five bottles! My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time. Their sweet wines are to die for. I totally recommend trying the St. James Winery out!
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
I'm not sold on on anything but the smiling service. Self serve wine tasting is something I'm not used to but what the heck? I'll give it a try. After two or three sips of selections, it was clear to me this was not the wine I'm familiar with and will take some getting used to. Nope, after the fourth sip I was done. The varietals used in this neck of the woods are just not my thing. The tasting room is very bright and has a road side truck stop feel with more knickknacks than quality wine. The redeeming quality here is the service. From the moment we walked in until we left with a few bottles to keep working on, we were treated like family. It was great. Too bad everything else was not.
google avatar

K8 T.

Yelp
Pretty much my first official wine tasting. We weren't greeted when we first came in so we just wondered and looked around the store. There was an employee doing a tasting with a group. So we ended up heading over to the other side of the counter, where we were greeted by Shelia who, was a lot of fun, friendly, engaging, knowledgeable about the wine and informative. They give you a wine menu and you get to pick 6 different wines to taste. The wines aren't paired anything. (like cheese/ fruit). We were given crackers to help cleanse the pallet in between tastes. The wine was very good. I like the fruit wine and that it is the fruit itself fermented, not mixed with juice. I left with 5 bottles of wine! I also really like the Moscato, not as sweet as some of the other brands (I prefer less sweet anyway). Would have been 5 stars if we were greeted when we came in. - it's welcoming! I'd highly recommend making an effort to greet. I noticed it happen to others beside us, I understand you get engaged in the wine tastings, but it's good to be acknowledged.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
A great experience. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The wine was delicious. They have indoor and outdoor seating. They are practicing social distancing guidelines. Unfortunately the tours are canceled because of Covid. We will be back.
google avatar

April G.

Yelp
The staff are so helpful and cheery. The wines taste great, it only costs $5.00 to do wine tasting. They have beautiful merchandise for sale from wine glasses to apparel. They also offer discounts. Management is very knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Johnny W.

Yelp
LOVE THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!! Free sampling of up to 6 wines. The staff are very friendly and they give tours of the facility on site. A person with a brewing, winery, or chemistry background would like to see their equipment setup. Just make sure to bring a jacket for the cold storage area(s). The selection of wine can also be found in the local economy of Saint James, Saint Robert, Waynesville, and Fort Leonard Wood.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
I have driven past this winery so many times on the way to and from Tulsa but never had the chance to stop in. From the highway it doesn't look too impressive but the wine shop is very clean and has a huge selection. The tasting was very generous and again we had plenty to choose from. Missouri wines tend to be pretty sweet but they had a great Chardonel that we bought a few bottles of. The employee who did our tasting was very informative and easy to chat with. We didn't end up doing a tour but next time we will have to leave time for it.
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
It would be nice if you could enter the Garden from the Winery! You have to enter through adjacent Public House Brewing. Brought my sister in from TX yesterday and was sadly disappointed with lacking service; although' Not rude. Public House Brewing was setting up to host a party~ we could not get food we were looking forward to~ not even offered a brew. (of which I have previously purchased cases) No visitor direction at Winery or Brewery unless we approached staff. I was embarrassed I even bothered taking my sister as she extended her stay with me to do this at my urging. We had friendlier service from Sonic up the road. Our visit here was 2:45-4:30 and there were only 10 other visitors the duration of our stay. I expected more from this long-standing winery. The Good it was Clean, well-organized and history of Winery looping on TV was great and the house Shepherd was a Sweetheart. This was the first time my sister and I have left a winery or brewery empty handed and hungry. We even had to request the oyster crackers for palate cleansing and were not given extra glass; although' I told server we would be sharing our flight. I definitely expected more from this Long Standing Winery.

Yelp
Woo hoo! I'm the first person who was born and raised here to review it. =) I grew up on this wine. Literally. I think back to my younger days and I can't think of one day that I wasn't fishing laying out on the back of the pickup truck with a bottle of Pink Catabwa in hand. St. James has made in nationwide now. Good for me because being military we travel all over. Two of the ones I can't find but here are the Chambourcin and Cynthiana. Both are dry and I tell you what I'm hoardin' that wine when I bring it back home. It's all mine! The tasting room you will find some of the sweetest souls, you will ever come across. And itself serve. So go head feel right at home and pour yourself and taste them. Get yourself a redneck wine glass. (Mason jar on a candle stick) You'll feel right at home or be the talk of the party either way. Don't forget they love our military and give a discount!
google avatar

Kali H.

Yelp
Free samples. I got a nice cookbook here, and the most jamming preserves ever! I bought a bottle of the Country Red, but am saving it for a special occasion. There is nothing more fun to do than to support these local places.

Becky H.

Yelp
Went to buy some wine. Sat at counter for 10-15 minutes, no service. She did do the wine tastings for the couple behind us though. We left. Bad service.
google avatar

Mindy P.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way to Arkansas for some wine for the weekend. I would not say I am a wine/winery connoisseur, I like trying the wines, and the same would go even if I was just eating out at dinner. Compared to the wineries that I have been to in Defiance and Hermann, I felt that St. James was not as friendly. There was one side of the wine tasting area that was free, and one that was like a membership side or something... You could pay for it, but since I'm not one to ask a lot of questions, I shied away from it altogether. It was Christmas time when we went and I loved the decorations, it felt very home-y and clean. I enjoyed walking around and looking at different items for sale.
google avatar

Layla E.

Yelp
St James bottles and sells their wines and ciders. The tasting counter is staffed with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The apple cider is very smooth and has become a favorite. Our go to wines are the Riesling and the Muscatto.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
Fantastic wines. Great indoor as well as outdoor seating. The gift shop is extensive with many unique gift items there for purchase. Purchase a bottle along with some sausage or cheese and sit outside and overlook the vineyards.
google avatar

Wick T.

Yelp
St. James make the best sweet/dessert wine. Step into the tasting room and Try the double gold awarding dry wine (store only) or the best dessert wine in the world - velvet red.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Saw the billboard signs and this winery didn't disappoint. We got to try 6 wines for free and we ended up getting juice and 2 bottles of wine. Great service and selection of wine in white and sweet fruit wines.
google avatar

Brandee N.

Yelp
Wine selection was great. I could really taste the flavor notes that were described in the pamphlet. You get to choose 6 different wines to taste and the prices are very reasonable. Audrey was friendly, knowledgeable, and a great help to us. The winery has a few awards for their wine. I wish I bought cheese, salami, and chocolate, but don't worry I definitely purchased several bottles of wine!
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
Loved that the tasting was free! It was very busy but I would still say service was good. Not as personal as it could have been but no fault of the staff. Was super surprised at their dry selection. Thought they only had sweets but was happy to be wrong. Norton was excellent. Bought a bottle to take home. Didn't get to spend a lot of time but what little we did was a good experience.
google avatar

Greg Z.

Yelp
Free samples... opens at 8 am !? Need I say more . Friendly workers. All good wine. Have cheese and other things for sale as well. I repeat. Open at 8 am
google avatar

Kerry S.

Yelp
Your driving down the highway, what is the best thing for you to do? Stop and sample Free wine maybe? Yes free! St James winery is a must. Six free samples? Hello?! Why would you not? Okay we had seven, don't tell anyone...our wine expert was great! Very friendly, knew everything there is about the wine. Eight bucks a bottle is makes it even better! Yes we bought a case. Ask about their seasonal wines, very yum! Cool place to be, a must to stop at! Total bonus! All their wines are screw top! Yes! No cork to mess with!!
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
In St Lou, we've stopped by the winery on our way back to Dallas, TX. Craving wine constantly like a grown up alcoholic, maybe not to extreme since we are watching our weight and health. But wine does our heart some good right? anyways, we googled something to do in town and this place popped up as one of the biggest winery in town. It was located right next to highway we are on so we decided to stop by. we were glad we did after we had couple of wine tasting, I'm not sure if it was the wine talking or selections of variety cheese they had for us to buy, but the experience along by far made up for the mediocre experience we had in St Lou, aka pretty boring city. We tried the red, white, and sparking rose with complimentary chocolate and bought us some bottle and cheese afterwards. The place was serene and quite with only some couples trying the wines and local buyers. We now know the wine label and may recognize them at a wine shop which was a nice learning experience. Tip #1 : buy a lotto at a gas station right next door, they give you extra power play slip and take that road straight to the winery.
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
As much as I love little local wineries and try to stay away from the larger commercial wineries, I just love this place. There are a ton of wines to choose from that suits everyone's tastes. The winemaker is fabulous and the workers are very knowledgeable. I wish this place was closer because it's one of the best quality wineries I've visited.
google avatar

Teri D.

Yelp
I have a soft spot for this place as my dad was once a resident at the Veterans Home on the other side of the highway from here. I love all of their wines and they do have a nice variety. I am highly partial to the country red - a semi sweet wine. Hubs calls it my "cow wine" because of the cow on the label. You can't go wrong with any of their wines IMHO. And if its too sweet and fruity for you, well then you can cook with it! ( A little for the pot then a little for me, a little more for the pot a little more for me ) Reasonably priced and the coolest part of the deal - the bottles are out and you sometimes can pour your own samples. Otherwise they are more than happy to give you samples. Even the grape juice they make is delish! They also have tshirts, cheeses, jerky, jams, cookbooks.

Mike S.

Yelp
Always have great wine! However They were sold out of my favorite Tiramisu mix. The staff was very friendly and both helped me search for the item that so wanted. I recommend if you're in the area to stop by this store!
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
If you're interested in sampling some fine Missouri wines, St. James Winery is definitely worth a visit. You can sample all of their wines for free in-store or buy some cheese and other goodies to compliment your wine. While MO wines do tend to run rather sweet, they've got some dry reds and whites that are surprisingly sophisticated. Prices are very reasonable, about $10 or less per bottle, so you can pick up a few for under $50. (I recommend trying the Norton, Chambourcin, Cynthiana, and Friendship School Red.)
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Pretty cool place to stop if you are passing by. The sweeter wines are pretty good. The dry reds are a little bit of an acquired taste but I am not an expert. They have preserves and grape juice that are really great too. If you buy 6 or more bottles you get 10% off (including grape juice). Oh yeah, and they have free tasting. Just step up and try all of the dozen or so they have to offer. Most wines are under $10.
google avatar

Vickie B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ordered the supreme pizza, trout fritters, and a house salad. The food was really good. Wish I could try more food but I got so food and still had leftovers. The wine tasted a bit off so the waitress immediately took it off. The Rod's Cream Ale was perfect with the pizza. Also, customer service was very good. They are a little busy but our waitress was very courteous. Hard to find good service these days.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
We bouught several bottles of wine at Christmas time and enjoyed most of them. However, one that we opened was "off" and had a sour taste. We happened to stop by again recently and let him know that one of our purchased bottles had gone bad. The worker did not offer to compensate us, but suggested we had stored it improperly. This seems unfriendly to us, and we won't go back. In hindsight, I probably should have asked for a manger.
google avatar

Heidi C.

Yelp
I came in today to put together boxes for my husbands work, and received some terrible service. Well I can't say terrible I guess no service would be better! I asked the lady when I entered if they would put together a nice package for me and she told me "look around there are boxes already made" ok well when I didn't find anything I wanted I asked again if she would put one together with what I did want....... she told me "fill a basket" by this time I was over it I looked like an idiot standing there not knowing what to do, I just started grabbing stuff. I tried to asked about the wines but she wasn't interested in telling me about them except when she has had enough with me and handed me a sample of one. I spent a good amount of money and wanted to make up at least 5 more boxes but the service I received was awful. I'll spend my money ordering from a California Winery where they appreciate costumers!
google avatar

Danon H.

Yelp
I went to this winery years ago. I had a lot of fun, got to try free samples of wine. They have the best sweet wine I have ever tried. Definitely worth going to. But be warned, its actually cheaper to buy their wine at a grocery, or liquor store than at the winery. Why you ask? I don't know.
google avatar

Lee C.

Yelp
If you like your wines cheap and sweet, then stop on it! They'll give you free samples. You can also buy some cheese. Then go down to the Mule Trading Post and buy some old stuff.

Yelp
We stopped in to taste some wine- it's even fun if you are not into drinking wine- everyone is so polite and kind and extremely informative. Super fun!
