St. Kilda Beach St. Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - Beach Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Give us the big picture—what's this beach all about? If you visit Melbourne and don't step foot on the St. Kilda sand, were you even there? This landmark is famous for its colorful bathing boxes that make it Insta-famous, but it's also a great spot for walking, rollerblading, wind surfing, and all matter of water sports. There's never a shortage of activity, so if you're looking for something secluded, this isn't the place. But it sure is great for people watching. Lovely. How accessible is it? It's quite easy to reach St. Kilda by public transport or by foot if you're an avid walker. Is it overwhelmingly crowded? There's plenty of public space on the beach. How are the facilities? You'll find heaps of bars and restaurants to enjoy the view with a glass of local wine from the Yarra Valley in hand. Is this the right spot for sunbathing or for splashing around? This is heaven for anyone wanting to indulge in the quintessential Aussie outdoor lifestyle—there' windsurfing, sailing, kitesurfing, rollerblading, beach volleyball, jet-skiing and waterskiing. You could lie out, too, but most people are getting in on some sort of action. Excellent. Can we go barefoot? Sure—it's a long, soft sandy stretch that goes on for nearly four miles. Anything else we should know? The water is regularly monitored by the local Environmental Protection Agency, and the quality is always fairly good. The wind can kick up—hence the wind surfers—but all in all, it's a great beach for all levels. Any must-sees? Be sure to check out the multicolored bathing boxes, a charming ode to the olden days when bathing suits were more than dental floss and no one worried about the ozone." - Krista Simmons

The beach itself is alright. Not the prettiest but a decent place if you want to cycle or jog along this beach. I would imagine it will be a much better experience if the sky wasn't gloomy :') anyway I came here for the wild penguins and this place is convenient with tram. Easily accessible

Nice place to walk, relax, and watch the sunset. Plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby. The pier is great and you might even see penguins at night. Can get busy on weekends but still a good spot to chill.

🏖️ St Kilda Beach in Melbourne is one of the city’s most popular and beautiful coastal destinations, perfect for a day of relaxation by the sea. On a sunny day, the brilliant blue sky blends seamlessly with the sparkling blue water, creating a breathtaking and serene view. The long sandy stretch is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, or taking a leisurely walk along the shore while enjoying the fresh ocean breeze. The St Kilda Pier offers stunning panoramic views of the bay and is a great spot to catch a magical sunset. Around the area, you’ll find plenty of cafés, restaurants, and ice cream shops, making it the perfect place to grab a snack or drink after a stroll. The lively vibe, paired with the peaceful sound of the waves, makes it a wonderful escape from the city bustle while still being just a short tram ride from Melbourne’s CBD. It’s one of my favorite places to relax. The weather is nice, and I love going in the evening to watch the sunset. I’ll definitely be back again.

Bit cold during winter but beautiful calm beach with a few dining places close by on the esplanade. Gorgeous on a summers day, and there’s usually a bit more ‘atmosphere’ at the local eateries and bars. Recommend visiting in the warmer months to get the best experience!

I came to St Kilda Beach around 2 PM with a friend from uni — and even though it was my second time here, it felt like the first. There’s something about this place that instantly slows you down. The cold winter air, the quiet beach, the open view of the ocean — it makes you stop and breathe. Unlike when I visited in December (when it was packed and full of wild energy), this time it was calm. Peaceful. Almost therapeutic. We walked slowly, clicked some photos, had deep chats, and just existed for a while. I noticed people walking alone with their headphones in, some listening to audiobooks, others jogging or just watching the waves. It made me realize — everyone here was doing something to reconnect with themselves. To relax. To think. That’s what I love about this place: it’s more than just a beach. It’s a reminder to pause. A place where you can let go of the pressure, the deadlines, the overthinking. Even in silence, it feels like the sea is talking to you. Whether you’re with a friend or alone, St Kilda Beach is the perfect spot to reflect, reset, and feel human again. Highly recommend coming here in winter if you want peace — no crowd, no noise, just the sound of the waves and your thoughts.
