St. Mary's Cathedral Jaffna

Possibly the oldest church in Jaffna, this historic site is beautifully designed in the shape of a traditional cross. The interior offers a vast, serene space for quiet contemplation; however, it becomes incredibly vibrant on Sunday evenings when a large crowd gathers for prayer. Situated conveniently near St Patrick’s College, the atmosphere is welcoming and the local people are exceptionally friendly. It also holds profound historical weight, as it marks the site where King Cankili I tragically executed his eldest son for converting to Christianity. It is an absolute must-visit for history enthusiasts.

As per the historical sources, King of Jaffna has killed his son at the location of the present cathedral after his son converted to Catholicism. The prince's ashes were buried at the spot where he was killed and a chapel, which later served as the foundation for the construction of the present cathedral. One of the most oldest.

A huge church which looks impressive from the outside. Inside it’s very plain, although there are two lovely stained glass windows. There’s currently work going on so it was very noisy and dusty near the entrance. B

Wonderful church, massive oldest church in Sri Lank. people should donate money to atleast to do the maintenance. Not cleaned /maintained properly
