As per the historical sources, King of Jaffna has killed his son at the location of the present cathedral after his son converted to Catholicism. The prince's ashes were buried at the spot where he was killed and a chapel, which later served as the foundation for the construction of the present cathedral. One of the most oldest.

A huge church which looks impressive from the outside. Inside it’s very plain, although there are two lovely stained glass windows. There’s currently work going on so it was very noisy and dusty near the entrance. B

Very convenient and welcoming atmosphere. Sunday mass vigil on Saturday at 5p.m. (English). Sunday mass at 5.30a.m., 7am and 5p.m. All of them in Tamil
