How to Visit the Cornwall Region in 2025

"Built between 1539 and 1545, I found St Mawes Castle to be among the best-preserved and most elaborately decorated of Henry VIII’s coastal artillery fortresses; it was designed to sink passing enemy ships, is impressively huge, and the displays are quite informative." - Matthew Kepnes

There is extra parking at the castle, but not marked up. There is what looks like a slip road that has a steep decline, but if you take that one left of the main car park there is lots of space. Castle is very interesting. Well worth a visit.

We hopped on the ferry from Falmouth to St Mawes to visit the castle. Built by Henry 8th, this "modern" castle has stunning views over the estuary. Our little explorer loved the connect four game and the amazing views. Lots of information boards and fascinating facts about the history of the castle and the area.

St Mawes Castle, located near Falmouth in Cornwall, is one of the best-preserved coastal artillery fortresses from the Tudor period. Constructed between 1540 and 1542 during King Henry VIII’s reign, it was designed to defend the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal against potential invasions from France and the Holy Roman Empire. The castle features a distinctive cloverleaf design, comprising a central four-story tower surrounded by three circular bastions. This layout provided extensive platforms for heavy artillery, allowing comprehensive coverage of the surrounding waters. Notably, St Mawes Castle is adorned with elaborate carvings and inscriptions praising Henry VIII, reflecting its historical significance and the era’s architectural style. For visitors interested in exploring this historic site, St Mawes Castle is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Booking tickets online in advance can provide a 15% discount on admission prices. It’s important to note that the last admission is 30 minutes before closing time. The castle’s address is Castle Drive, St Mawes, Nr Truro, Cornwall, TR2 5DE. For the most current information on opening times and ticket prices, it’s advisable to consult the official English Heritage website. There is also a ferry nearby if you’re the other side of the English channel which is very reasonable priced

We really enjoyed our visit to St Mawes Castle as it was so interesting with plenty of signage. The staff, particularly Don Reynolds, were very friendly and helpful. Don helped us out with a membership problem. The Castle is one of Henry VIII's Tudor forts with his plaque above the entrance. Inside it's very compact so easy to get around and from the battlements good views of its sister Pendennis Castle and Falmouth. Well worth a visit.

Very similar to Dartmouth Castle as built for same reason by Henry 8. Fabulous views over 4 different levels including level lawned area overlooking River Fal.
