Yelp
St. Michaels Harbour Inn has 52 rooms & suites, so it is sizable without being overwhelming. The amenities are standard for a 3-star (breakfast, van service within town, outdoor pool, lounge areas, WiFi), and, in addition, the free bicycle rentals is a very cute touch for this area. There is a photo of a gym here on Yelp, but I didn't inquire when there. With all the outdoor activities, you don't need it. They have a bar, restaurant, and gift shop. NOTE that breakfast will no longer be included come April 2019.
A plain room or a waterfront queen suite were the only available rooms when I booked, so we went with the suite. As others have mentioned, yes, decor could use updating. But they allow dogs, so I am not complaining. When I was booking my stay, another Yelper recommended nearby Perry Inn, which is also dog-friendly and very chic-boutique, but I was relieved that Harbour Inn was more laid back. Our big dogs are not prissy, and I felt more at home at this place, with shedding machines, and a baby.
Pros:
- View. Beautiful water views all along the two lengths of the L-shaped hotel. You can see across the harbor to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and waterfront restaurants. It's far enough not to have too much noise, but with plain sight views.
- They have worked to cultivate a B&B feel to this otherwise large inn, with theme rooms of varying personalities, at a range of different prices. This makes it really handy to a variety of visitors, from wedding guests, to vacationers, to weekend getawayers, to the sea legs crew. Something for everyone, nothing putting on airs, laid back, and all about being on the water! Welcoming shore town feel to the common areas and grounds, that I really loved. (The website is not clear about bathroom upgrades per room type, so you should call to have it spelled out for you.)
- I have a little boating (sailing) experience under my belt, & I know how it is to be moored or anchored for a few days without fresh water showers, so the ability to dock & use the hotel facilities, or dock & have a room that is a few feet from your boat, is one of the coolest things I could imagine! Our room had two sets of sliding doors, a patio, a full bar area, & direct access to the docks. Hello party in the warm months! This place would absolutely rock for that! The only problem would be keeping your noise down!
- Staff was very friendly & helpful! Our dogs apparently started howling in the middle of our dinner out. The staff called our cell & offered to keep the dogs with them at reception. We could enjoy our 2-hour dinner in peace, & they took care of / entertained them free of charge. VERY KIND! They even gave them dog biscuits! Also, I forgot my saline solution. Since it's a small town, the only mom-n-pop pharmacies were closed, so I got my husband to grab a salt shaker from the bar to DIY saline. The bar staff had to go fetch us one from the closed dining room, & they were very gracious & kind to do so.
- On the water side, every room has some kind of balcony or patio, which is a must on my list!
- There is a complimentary shuttle into town (only a couple minutes by car). This is very handy for boaters with no vehicle, wedding / event guests who are drinking, or during the Oyster Festival when the town is packed, & it's too difficult to try to park downtown.
- If you prefer to walk, downtown St. Michaels is a short few blocks from the Inn. Roads are okay to walk, not the best, but okay.
- Free breakfast with omelette bar (as others have said). The omelettes were decent, much better than I expected, but not last-meal-on-earth-worthy as some have made it sound.
- Others had complained about the WiFi but it was fine for us. No issues at all.
Cons:
- We paid $300/night for our suite, incl dog fee & taxes, but in-season rates are $500 and more, so had we paid that, I would have expected the below issues to be remedied, and would want more updated decor/bathroom.
- Room 106 was near the exit that gives closest access to the back of the parking lot. Just outside this exit is also the employee smoking area. Somehow the living area of our suite smelled like smoke, faintly, but distinctly.
- One sink had a permanent red stain on it (looked like dye or lipstick).
- Glass top of dresser had a random hole that had been drilled in it, but no purpose for it. Looked sloppy.
- Tub had been updated years ago by putting an insert over a former tub, & it was extremely shallow, only about 2/3 the depth of a standard tub. Not cool!
In summary, it was a good time, and I would love to go back. I'm not fond of the prices in warmer months, but it may be worth it that time of year, we'll see. It's definitely a great little escape during the off-season, and while St. Michaels has a lot to do, there is so much more all over the Eastern Shore, right nearby! (Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, and Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park are next on our list!)
