The Best Hotels in Crete

"In the unspoilt eastern side of the island, nestled between the town of Agios Nikolaos and the fishing village of Elounda, where local fishing boats pootle about the marina, life at St Nicolas Bay Resort feels simple. It’s hard to put this blissfully soothing cliff-side hotel into words: a hidden Greek far from the madding crowds, with twinkly sea views in every direction, teamed with a comforting, relaxed vibe that will see you and your brood scooped up, set down and looked after. Families can’t get enough of the chic new Olives & Sea suites, with separate bedrooms for the sprogs, private terraces and a pool so you can do laps and drink rosé, gazing across the spectacular Mirabello Bay, while they nap peacefully inside. The hotel is scattered about its six acres, with a rustic, authentically Grecian style, all-white stone walls fringed by blossoming pink oleanders and olive trees, with its own sandy beach and oodles of tucked-away spots under the fragrant bougainvillea or beside the ancient church, ideal for diving, nose-deep into a book. There’s a brilliant kids’ club run by the kind-hearted Roula, a baby and Olympic-sized infinity pool and no shortage of tempting food - from the Greek Kafeneion, where a bouzouki band serenades as you tuck into wood-fired souvlaki to the fine-dining Minotaur and its famed sushi. However, this place is all about the people. Eleni remembers every child by name with a high-five, Nikos happily picks up a tantruming toddler for a whirl around in his hotel buggy, and manager Alex treats every family coming here like his own. So very different from the run-of-the-mill resorts that Greece has become synonymous with, you’ll feel clever for finding this spot. —Annabelle Spranklen Price: from $315 per nightAddress: Thesi Nissi, Ag. This was our first visit to St Nicholas Bay hotel but it certainly won’t be our last! From the moment we arrived we felt utterly at home and so relaxed. The breakfasts are wonderful, and we loved being greeted by Eleni every day with her warm welcome. The resort is absolutely beautiful; the infinity pool facing the sea and the beach were both incredible spots to spend the day. Even though we were there in August we never struggled to find a nice spot and there were always so many pool towels available! Our room was a studio with pool and sea view and the kids were in an interconnecting twin and could access our pool though a gate which was a great set up for us. The pool was so warm (often we have found pools in rooms a bit chilly!). We ate in all the restaurants but actually the buffet restaurant was our favourite (we preferred the outside). The best thing about this hotel though are the incredible staff, the manager is often around for a chat and every staff member was professional, warm and incredibly welcoming. We were sad to leave but will return next year we hope!

We had a wonderful stay earlier this month at this beautiful hotel. On arrival, we were delighted to find our suite was larger than expected, with a lovely view out to sea and great amenities. |The layout of this hotel, with the infinity pool overlooking the private beach and sunbathing areas make it really special, and very easy to make the most of all options! The sunbeds are really comfortable and we never had an issue getting one. |The restaurants are all in gorgeous settings and feel very authentic. The buffet restaurant was good, and we enjoyed the greek night!|What makes this hotel even better is the team of lovely people working there. They are always smiling and work so hard to ensure everyone has a wonderful holiday, We don't normally return to the same place but will definitely go back, probably next year!

We stayed here for 7 nights in June for our babymoon. It was absolutely perfect. The team went above and beyond to make it a special trip. The room was pristine, well appointed, and the room pool cleaned daily. The breakfast had so many good options and from European choices to Greek specialties. We walked to town each day or night, there is a sidewalk most of the time and we didn’t feel unsafe in any way (other reviews said it was dangerous with cars etc). The staff was kind and welcoming. The manager Alexandros is an absolute gem and the lodging is a reflection of his caring and hard work. We’ll be back!

Perfect stay at this hotel! Beautiful two bedroom villa with pool. Exceptional staff and cleaning team. Maria on the restaurant team was wonderful. Relaxed and serene ambiance throughout. We especially enjoyed the sheltered cove for swimming and snorkelling. Children spent all of their time in the sea, rather than the pools as felt so safe in the sea. Loved the jetty bar for an after dinner drink. Hotel reception also recommended good day trips to local olive groves, spinalonga day trips and to the town of Kritsa to explore…all well worth doing. Manager on site every day to check on guests and we loved the Greek night too. Would definitely return to this exceptional hotel!

Once again, the staff in this beautiful country proved to be truly exceptional. Thanks to my Diamond status, I was upgraded to the Sea View Suite, offering a breathtaking panorama of the hotel’s pool with the sparkling sea just beyond. Upon arrival, I mentioned that my cousin had just gotten married, and to our delight, we were surprised with a chilled bottle of Prosecco waiting in our room. Such a thoughtful and heartwarming gesture that made our stay even more special.

This resort is absolutely magical! The views! The pools! The stellar service! We stayed in the Grand Animos Villa and it was absolutely perfect. The pool is massive and the privacy and unobstructed views meant that we rarely left the backyard. Plus, we had a private cove that offered direct access into the ocean. Fish were everywhere! The team was so helpful in planning catamaran trips as well as local excursions. And the resort food was so delicious. We are already missing that breakfast buffet! We cannot wait to return!

This was definitely one of the coolest locations for a resort, that I’ve been to. The hotel and grounds are amazing, here are highlights: The ocean views from our room were exceptional. We even watched a perfect sunrise one morning The gym is really great, spacious and pretty well stocked with equipment The beach area is amazing. One of the coolest places I’ve spent a day at in a long time. We swam for hours in the Mediterranean, technically Sea of Crete Now the only negative was the rooms stay very hot. There is AC but it hardly worked in our room, despite running it all the time. I had trouble sleeping. The bathrooms additionally are not ventilated so the window in them keeps that room particularly hot and stuffy. Hardly a reason to avoid this place, also I know full well I visited in mid-summer but that’s high season. I would certainly recommend on a trip to Greece though, still one of the coolest stays in my travel history

This is a fabulous hotel in a stunning location. We are a family of 4 with grown up kids (aged 20 & 16) so took a bit of time selecting a hotel that would suit us all and this hotel did not disappoint. We booked one of the villas with a private pool overlooking the sea which was absolutely stunning. The hotel is immaculate, the beach and swimming areas never crowded and the food consistently of a very high standard all round, but its the staff that really made the difference here, welcoming and friendly they were always happy to help and really made us feel very well looked after for the entire stay. A perfect example of Cretan hospitality, we are already planning to book again for next year.
