St Paul’s Catacombs

Very interesting place, the catacombs are numerous and you can walk down the stairs into them there are about 20 or so. Be careful because some hallways are tight and have low ceilings. In the hot weather it can get really humid down there so be sure to take your time and take rest breaks. There is a gift shop which also sells drinks and believe me you will need it. Overall worth the trip and entry fee which is €6.

The place is divided into two areas by the street, so be careful not to skip one side by mistake. It is a nice activity that feels like a small adventure. If you manage to visit all the chambers, it is a good small workout too (you will have to go up and down quite a few stairs). Random fact: There was a chicken outside of the gift shop. :D

Great experience, really well maintained and managed exhibits, and absolutely worth the money. Set across two linked sites in Mdina, the catacombs was €6 /adult to get in and included both sites and access to all the available tombs. Some of the tombs (maybe 2/3 out of the 20) were closed for restoration work, but even so there is so much to see here. The multicultural heritage of the site was fascinating to read and listen to. There’s a QR code audio book / guide you can listen to at your pace throughout the site, with markers for each chapter. You follow the site round to some above ground exhibits but the below ground ones are brilliant. There’s restoration and careful planning gone into the site is well worth the entrance fee. It can be snug, there are low ceilings, narrow paths, and steep steps. Do not wear heeled shoes, and these tombs would be very hard to navigate if you have reduced mobility. They have a small gift shop with some drinks, and some shaded outdoor seating. There are two bathrooms. Overall a great 1 - 2 hrs spent, really enjoyed the visit.

I'd highly recommend a visit here! Even as a local showing my visiting friends around, I really enjoyed exploring the catacombs. I was surprised by the scale of the underground burial grounds - it's more extensive than I expected. The ticket price is very fair considering the experience and the effort that's gone into maintaining the place. Don't forget to see the rest of the catacombs located across the street, with the same ticket. We spent two hours exploring the place, which was ideal to escape the summer heat!

Very cool experience! There were an incredibly large number of catacombs to walk through it was very impressive! Lots of signs with information about each catacomb. There was also a museum with more information. We didn't buy the ticket in advance and had no trouble getting in. The catacombs are fairly chilly so be sure to bring a jacket

When winding through the dark caves numerous archways, you are taken on a physical and metaphysical journey through Maltas history. Was an awe inspiring experience. Sadly while I was down there someone must’ve accidentally pressed the emergency button thinking it was a light switch 🤣🤣🤣 A humorous experience!
