"Grave hunting at St. Sebastian's Built between 1595 and 1600 and modeled after the Italian Campo Santo, this quiet cemetery behind the baroque St. Sebastian Church is worth a quick peek at the very least. The arcades lining the cemetery include ornately designed tombs of some of Salzburg's more notable residents. It's the final resting place of many members of the Mozart family, including his widow Constanze and father Leopold. The composer himself, at least most of him anyway, is somewhere in St. Marx cemetery in Vienna."

Friedhof Salzburg (St. Sebastian) is a quietly enchanting sanctuary tucked just beyond the bustle of the city. Its elegant arcades, weathered gravestones, and lovingly tended pathways create an atmosphere of contemplative calm. The cemetery’s blend of history and restraint invites visitors to slow their pace and appreciate the subtle beauty of its architecture and the dignified serenity of its grounds. The interplay of sculptural detail, soft light, and cultivated greenery lends the space a contemplative depth that feels both timeless and profoundly humane. St. Sebastian is not merely a resting place, but a subtle, enduring testament to Salzburg’s cultural sensibility and its quiet dialogue between art and remembrance.

Very peaceful and quiet. Not real busy or crowded so you can take your time to visit and admire the beauty.

Built in 1595-1600 under the auspices of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1559-1617) in the Italian style of a Campo Santo. The cemetery’s centrepiece is Wolf Dietrich’s own mausoleum which he called the Chapel of the Archangel Gabriel. Other notable personalities buried there are Constanze Mozart and Leopold Mozart; (widow and father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart respectively), Elia Castello (sculptor and mosaic artist) and Theophrastus Paracelsus (philosopher and physician).

The cemetery is behind St. Sebastian church, and contains some tombs of some well known people, including the Mozart family. Entry is free and can easily be accessed through different routes.

St Sebastian's Cemetery is slightly smaller than St Peter's and opposite the river from the old town, but we quite enjoyed our time here as this place is more tranquil and less touristy than St Peter's. The most notable tombstone here belongs to the Mozart family (Wolfgang Mozart himself is buried in Vienna though), but it's still quite the experience to look through the different tombstones and note their design and age.

Marvellous and rather creepy gothic cemetery tucked away behind St Sebastian's church. The entrance is a little hard to find. You go down the road below the church and turn in through a gateway effectively behind the church. There are some wonderful statues and gravestones. In the centre of the cemetery is the tomb of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich.

This is smaller than the St. Peter one and is on the other side of the river, hiding in a residential area. Very quiet and relaxed experience. Mozart's father and step mom were buried in this cemetery.

Amateur of quiet dark places and unique graveyards? This place is for you. You better visit it in the morning so you can be alone.

Yelp
Magnificent graveyard. The era is 1800. Go at noon to experience the bells tolling while IN the graveyard. It is tricky to enter from around the driveway side of the church. You can miss it easily.
