I was in awe of the beauty here. The Gothic architecture is charming and the sculptures are incredibly calming. I highly recommend buying the ticket for the chapel area (around €7); it includes an audio guide and lets you escape the crowds that stay on the free side. It gives you a moment of true quiet to immerse yourself in the history. We also took the elevator to the North Tower to see the Pummerin bell. Note that the elevator only holds about 4 people and it gets quite windy at the top! The panoramic view is absolutely worth it—just remember to look down for a great perspective of the Stephansplatz below. Spent about 2 hours and €14 total; very well spent.

Wonderful, rich decorated baroque cathedral of historically important town of Passau. There are currently some renovations around the choir. A place to feel the greatness of God.

The cathedral was under construction the time we were there, according to our guide St. Stephan is always under construction, it’s all depends if they have the funds or not. Even with a big crane inside you can tell the artwork on the ceiling is very impressive.

So beautiful cathedral calm and peace located in passau. I visited in weekdays and it was not crowded. And cathedral is being renovated bit public is allowed now. You can get inside and praise the lord inside by lighting the candles. #passau

Google
Beautiful Baroque cathedral fronting the Domplatz. We visited the Christmas market but did not miss to visit this cathedral.

It is a huge cathedral with some of the highest ceilings i have seen in Europe. Seems this place was not destroyed by WW2, thankfully. It is a magnificent structure at the highest point of Passau.

The Cathedral of Passau, also known as St. Stephen's Cathedral, is a stunning Baroque church located in Passau, Germany. It is famous for housing one of the world's largest cathedral organs, with over 17,000 pipes, making it a major attraction for both architecture and music lovers. The cathedral's interior features elaborate frescoes, richly decorated stucco work, and impressive vaulted ceilings. Situated at the confluence of three rivers—the Danube, Inn, and Ilz—it offers a picturesque setting that enriches its historical and spiritual significance.

Google
The cathedral has the most beautiful baroque ceiling work. A true spectacle. It's said to have the largest pipe organ ion the world. A concert is spectacular. Walking through the old-fashioned German town is fascinating. The Rhine recurringly floods halfway up the streets. Side streets are cobbled & decorated by local artists.

Yelp
I came to Passau to start a Uniworld Christmas Market Cruise, beginning from Passau on Dec 9 - ending in Budapest Dec 16, 2019. The tour for Dec 10, 2019 took us to this church. I LOVE Baroque music and architecture, surely had a lifetime during this period in Europe. Tour guide said this organ is the 2nd largest pipe organ in the world. Unfortunately I could not hear it being played, as no concert was going on this morning. The largest pipe organ ever built, based on number of pipes, is the Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ in Atlantic City, New Jersey, built by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company between 1929 and 1932. I will be coming back to Germany June 2 with a group of American pipe organists, on a Bach tour, to play the organs in Germany and Austria, that Bach himself played, Also to hear the resident organists play for our group. I play piano, but not pipe organ, but I sure enjoy hearing Bach being played. I know all of Bach's 217 organ compositions by heart. Just seeing the organ in this beautiful church was a highlight of my entire trip. I posted my pictures of this beautiful church and organ, here on Yelp. I hope to come hear St. Stephans Dom organ in June 2020 with the Bach Organ Tour.

Yelp
Beautiful church, the decorations, frescos and statues are really impressive. This large building with its white towers and blue-green domes is the crucial baroque church north of the Alps. The ornately interior holds an exceptional treasure: the biggest cathedral organ in the world with 17,974 pipes and 233 registers...currently being renovated, so many of the pipes are not on site....The noon concert was not great due to the lack of organ pipes....which are expected to be ready to play again in 2027. The St. Stephen's Cathedral is the mother church of the Danube's eastern region. The magnificent cathedral with lots of Baroque influence is situated at the highest point of Passau's old town, the Altstadt.

Yelp
As so many others I was in town to join a river cruise and thought I should go and see the world's largest pipe organ. Imagine my disappointment when I found out that it is under construction currently. Half of the Dom is blocked by scaffolding. I mean it's still very pretty with lots of things to admire, but I won't be back here again and so I did miss out on the organ. Still it is worth a look-see. It is quite an impressive church.

Yelp
This has to be one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever seen. Construction began in 405....and continued into 1674 and completed about 25 years later. The Dom St. Stephen's houses the world's largest pipe organ with four ancillary organs that can be controlled by the main organ....like 1789 pipes. Unfortunately there was no organ playing when we visited. The painting, statuary and frescoes were beyond anything I've seen. I would highly suggest taking a guided tour when visiting. I learned so much from our guide. Most stories were true but some were shall say embellished...lol. Note...be respectful when entering. Men must removed thier hats. This goes back to the days of helmets and weapons days of knights. No dogs are allowed. There are guards inside that will make there presence know if you're breaking the rules. A definite must to view!

Yelp
I came here with 1000's of other tourists (probably all on a RIver cruise like me) to hear the famous organ. We took a city walking tour, and got dumped at the St. Stefan Dom for the "concert". They herd you inside like cattle, and you scurry around to find a chair. Perhaps the reason I am giving this such low ratings is we got stuck in the back of the church, literally in the corner. We could not see or hear a thing. The church inside is beautiful, but with 1000's of other people, its hard to appreciate its beauty or take any decent photos. Of course once the concert is playing, you can't do anything but sit there, and listen. I'm not a fan of baroque organ music, and you just sit there. I didn't know you could not record, but since I was so bored in the hidden part of the church, I did take a video of the place, while the organ was playing. Sorry but I think (for me) it was a waste of my time. Perhaps if I had gotten there earlier and found better seats, I would have enjoyed it more.

Yelp
Just 4 Euros to hear Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor in a venue that magnifies the performance is just extraordinary. It is hailed as the largest cathedral organ in the world and the 5th largest pipe organ. The cathedral's rendition of Bach's music in Saint Stephan's in Passau, Germany is a perfect union of instrument, venue and musical selection. To hear Bach in this gorgeous baroque cathedral played on this organ is an unforgettable experience. The organ has 17,974 pipes and 233 stops all played from one console. The organ dates from 1928 but the Baroque encasement dates to 1731. The organ that is played today was restored between 1978-81 by the organ company Eisenbarth. Organ concerts begin at noon and are approximately 1/2 hour long from May-October, everyday except Sundays and holidays. They let you in at 11:20 and seats fill quickly so I suggest you get seated before 11:30. Tickets can be purchased at the box office. If you are in Passau get tickets before you do anything else. On-line tickets are also available. Tickets are 4 Euros for Adults and 2 Euros for students and the disabled w/ID. The Passau City card will get you in free.

Yelp
High Danube River water level almost prevented the cruise ship from reaching Passau directly. Fortunately overnight things changed and we were able to dock right next to the old town. We enjoyed the guided tour of this historic town which culminated in attending an organ concert in St. Stephen's Cathedral. The majestic church houses the largest organ in the world on the back balcony, accompanied by 4 separate organs each with their own distinct sound character. The combined music emulating from all five parts was simply fantastic.
