How to Explore New Orleans Without the Crowds - AFAR

"I recommend a 7 a.m. visit to St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery (just north of the Bywater) to capture mausoleums in golden morning light, and I note it’s purportedly haunted by a dog ghost." - Jenny Adams

I wanted to explore an old haunted style cemetery in New Orleans but because all the other ones cost money I decided to come here. The cemetery is open to the public and is free. You can see the spooky old and gritty vibe to it. Some of the graves are huge. This cemetery is certainly off the beaten path but it was definitely worth it especially because it’s free.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery on Louisa Street is not to be confused with the Uptown cemetery of the same name. This was originally a privately owned cemetery, owned be Jose Pepe Llalla. The cemetery is somewhat unique in its mix of nationalities and religions. The cemetery is open every day and divided into three sections, in the same area.

Everyone was very compassionate and answered all of our wishes. Graveside experience was professional and on time. After one minor adjustment, everything went perfectly. Thank you for assisting our family during a extremely difficult time.

The cemetery office was super helpful in confirming the location of my ancestors in this cemetery. Beware -- there is another cemetery of the same name Uptown. I highly recommend calling the office before venturing there. If you visit M-F, they are even able to radio one of the caretakers to meet you there when you arrive, which I also strongly recommend. A shout-out to Shawonda in the office for going the extra mile and to caretaker Tyrone for guiding us to the right spot in the cemetery and generously sharing his knowledge.

Visited today looking for a specific gravesite and had trouble locating it. Found a groundskeeper who walked with us until we found it. He was very kind and helpful! I think he said his name was Clarence. I hope he gets a promotion someday! Cemetery was clean and well cared for.

It looks like a cool place from the outside...But its open from 8:00-3:30 not 24 hours like the schedule says.

Yelp
What a lovely well maintained cemetery! Covering three city blocks, paved walkways, some of the walkways are buckling and cracking, but that is to be expected. Time and weather march on, most of the time finding the weak spots and wearing them down so as to make everything look aged, despite how young it might be, or making it seem older than it really might be. This is not in a fashionable area of town or have anyone famous buried here, but is a wonderful spot to wander around for a few hours. Look at the names that are engraved. Wonder about the spots worn down and think about who lies here. No one makes it out of this world alive, and these things will never really change. Come take a stroll. Appreciate the love and care that goes into these three city blocks. You might not encounter a living person at all inside of these walls.

Yelp
Y'all know I love a good cemetery and this cemetery is actually 3...over 3 city blocks. Which was tough for me because I was hunting for a friend's grandparents' crypt. He had guessed right as to which of the 3 blocks it was on. But there are a lot of wall crypts...in all 3 cemeteries. If you're not sure where your loved one is...and you're not enamored of wandering around a cemetery... you can always call the Archdiocese of New Orleans and get an exact location. Luckily my visiting friend AB was with me and we scoured the cemetery, being charmed by the names, the decorations, the offerings (from plastic flowers to a pint of rum). The neighborhood is better than it once was and while it's definitely still working class and you should ALWAYS be wary when wandering by yourself in New Orleans, I did not feel concerned. We did find my friend's grandparents and I could send him a photo. So he could see the condition of the wall tomb. So that was an achievement. Also when walking through graveyards, I like to say the names of the dead outloud (or mumble them to myself). I feel like the dead like it when they hear their names again.

Yelp
This is a smaller cemetery but we had first time visitors in town and were trying to squeeze in some local touristy stuff. We picked this location because of its hours and it was free The sites were above ground and our visitors were pleased.

Yelp
I was pretty shocked that the cemetery had zero reviews. It's pretty nice, located in the middle of a neighborhood. I stopped in here to take a few photos from my personal use. I was astonished at how many of the graves were older, some of the last burials in them took place in the 30s and 40s. For the most part, the graves are well kempt in the number one cemetery, but in the number two cemetery, it's a different story. In the number two cemetery, graves are falling into disrepair, just because a lot of time has passed and the families have likely died off. That's not to say anything bad about New Orleans Catholic cemeteries, which maintains the properties. I enjoyed walking through both spaces, and I enjoyed the quiet of all of it.

Yelp
I have been to the cemetery/mausoleum several times for approximately four burials since 1973, with the most recent being this year. It is in a bad neighborhood. It does not appear to be maintained very well. I am not even sure if there is air conditioning in the mausoleum. The paneled walls are warped and appear to be on the verge of falling off. The names on the walls have come off of many of the inside mausoleum crypts. Based on my recent visit and viewing the dates inscribed, this is now an infrequently used cemetery/mausoleum. Do not go alone and if you go, be sure you have your telephone readily available for an emergency call. However, if you call who knows how long it will take help to arrive. The potholes on the adjacent streets are unbelievable! Having said the above, when I go, I always love looking at the names and dates, and contemplating the life and death circumstances of those buried there. I was comfortable doing this because of the police escort for the funeral procession.

Yelp
There are actually four parts to this cemetery. There is one beside a mausoleum, the mausoleum, one across the street and one across the street from that one. The one beside the mausoleum is in pretty good shape, the mausoleum is in very good shape. The two other ones are more interesting to me. There some that are in very good shape and others, not so much. They are in far better shape that Saint Louis 1 and 2, probably quite a bit newer. Some of the crypts are massively built, better construction than SL 1 and 2. They are blocker without the antique ornate toppers like SL 1 and 2. The two across the street are completely paved, the one beside the mausoleum has some grass. They all have wall vaults and are completely surrounded by newly stuccoed walls! Worth the trip! Street parking, I felt safe.

Yelp
Note it closes at 3:30. I arrived at 4:00 while they were cleaning and took a few photos. The area of town is a bit shady, so if you have a expensive camera or etc. just please be safe. The nice gentleman that worked there said he was "robbed" there before, so take a few friends and ensure "safety first", I know that sounds lame but honestly. **** great photo opp anyhow*** or go 11 min down to Cemetery 1 or 2 for optional vintage photo op , while being respectful, of the historical area.

Yelp
Did you always want to start a worm farm? You could do worse than this historic resting place. It's a bit old, but what do you care anyway... you're pushing daisies!

Yelp
radical. i think it's open during the day, but how would i know? i was busy gutting and rebuilding houses and serving food to the residents of the lower 9th ward... at night it's really quite a trip to see all the above-ground tombs with fake flowers on them. this cemetery has two parts with a street dividing them. i really don't think you ought to go here when it's closed, but it only takes you about ten minutes to see it all before you get too scared of cops and being arrested and all that blah, blah, blah. the above ground tombs are awesome. generations of the deceased in one tomb, all from very, very long family lines. sad.
