St. George’s Parish Church – Piran’s guardian on the hill (May 6, 2025)
Perched high above the red rooftops of Piran, this elegant 17th-century baroque church (with its iconic free-standing bell tower) watches over the entire peninsula like a proud sentinel. The short climb up the hill is absolutely worth it: from the grassy terrace in front of the white façade you get one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Slovenia – the colourful Tartini Square below, the glittering Adriatic stretching to Italy and Croatia, and the dramatic sky on stormy days adding even more magic.
The church itself is beautiful and peaceful inside (gorgeous frescoes and a stunning wooden altar), but the real star is the location. On our grey and windy May morning, the clouds racing over the sea and the fresh breeze made it feel timeless and romantic. Piran’s undisputed highlight – come for the view, stay for the serenity. Don’t leave town without visiting this gem on the hill!
