"The Mad King Sleeps Here This 16th century church is in downtown Munich , and, other than its amazing architecture and ceiling paintings, it is also where King Ludwig II of Bavaria rests. The mad king drowned in 1886, close to his fairy tale castle Neuschwanstein. The interior is breathtaking, as you can see! The crypt also holds six other local royals."

A really beautiful church and well worth a visit. The interior is impressive, peaceful, and has a level of detail you don’t always see. What stood out most was the history—some of the fixtures and gaskets date back to the 1500s, which is incredible to see up close. If you’re in the area, I’d definitely recommend stopping in.

We really enjoyed visiting this beautiful historic church in the Old Town area of Munich. The crypt below is definitely worth exploring too as it is the final resting place of many members of the Bavarian royal family from the 16th to 20th centuries. The Church itself is an amazing sight inside and with artistic treasures all around. Its also a great place to worship and much less crowded with tourists than the Frauenkirche nearby.

Stunning Renaissance style church located in Munich. It is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The outside and inside is absolutely stunning. It is dedicated to St. Michael. Originally finished in 1597, it was heavily damaged during WWII. The high altar is just breathtaking. The church is the burial site for the Wittelsbach Dynasty and includes the tomb of famous King Ludwig II. This church is a must see in Munich and we loved our visit!

I recently visited St. Michael’s Church in Munich, and – wow – what an unforgettable experience! Nestled right between Marienplatz and Stachus, the church’s striking façade already hints at the wonder within . Stepping inside felt like entering a serene sanctuary entirely removed from the city hustle. Despite it being midday, the air was calm and reflective – a perfect moment of quiet that invited contemplation (and even lighting a candle, as many visitors do) . Architecturally, it’s a masterpiece: the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps, built in the late 16th century, with a barrel-vaulted ceiling second in scale only to St. Peter's in Rome . The light filtering through high windows illuminates gilded stuccoes and sculptures that weave together stories of faith and artistry – breathtaking in every respect . Don’t forget to check out the crypt, home to the resting places of some famous Bavarian royals – including King Ludwig II. and his brother Otto – which adds a fascinating historical dimension to the visit . Whether you're looking for architecture fans, spiritual calm, or a touch of royal history, St. Michael’s delivers them all. A must-see when in Munich!

This is an absolutely beautiful church. Way prettier than it more famous local counterparts. Well worth a visit. We even got a choral session thrown in whilst we walked around. Excellent.

St. Michael’s Church in Munich is a place that often surprises visitors with its quiet grandeur and historical depth. Built in the late sixteenth century, it is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps and stands as a powerful symbol of the Counter Reformation in Bavaria. The exterior may appear understated, but stepping inside reveals a vast and elegant interior with high barrel vaults, detailed altars, and a strong sense of symmetry and calm. One of the highlights is the crypt, where members of the House of Wittelsbach are buried, including King Ludwig II of Bavaria. This adds a layer of historical significance to the visit, especially for those interested in Bavarian history. The church also offers moments of reflection away from the crowds, despite being located just off the busy Neuhauser Strasse. St. Michael’s is well worth a visit, whether for its architecture, its historical importance, or simply as a peaceful pause while exploring central Munich.
