I recently visited St. Michael’s Church in Munich, and – wow – what an unforgettable experience! Nestled right between Marienplatz and Stachus, the church’s striking façade already hints at the wonder within .
Stepping inside felt like entering a serene sanctuary entirely removed from the city hustle. Despite it being midday, the air was calm and reflective – a perfect moment of quiet that invited contemplation (and even lighting a candle, as many visitors do) .
Architecturally, it’s a masterpiece: the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps, built in the late 16th century, with a barrel-vaulted ceiling second in scale only to St. Peter's in Rome . The light filtering through high windows illuminates gilded stuccoes and sculptures that weave together stories of faith and artistry – breathtaking in every respect .
Don’t forget to check out the crypt, home to the resting places of some famous Bavarian royals – including King Ludwig II. and his brother Otto – which adds a fascinating historical dimension to the visit .
Whether you're looking for architecture fans, spiritual calm, or a touch of royal history, St. Michael’s delivers them all. A must-see when in Munich!
