"Rothenburg ob der Tauber has several significant churches, but the most famous one, for good reason, is St. Jacob’s. A short stroll from the town’s main square, the cathedral was built in stages, between 1311 and 1484, in the High Gothic style, and is famous for its high altar, religious artworks, and pair of distinctive towers, both of which are nearly 200 feet tall. Inside, visitors will find several paintings, including a depiction of pilgrims stopping here en route to Santiago de Compostela in the 15th century. The Altar of the Twelve Apostles is one of the most important of its kind in Germany, with an intricate altarpiece that depicts Christ on the cross surrounded by four angels, and the Holy Blood altarpiece in the west gallery is almost as impressive, with early 16th-century wood carvings by Tilman Riemenschneider and a glass vial that purportedly contains a drop of Christ’s blood."

We visited this church today on our visit Rothenburg ob Tauber today. Cost to enter is 3 euros. The altar is stunning. There is also a very unique wooden altar upstairs in the back of the church that is stunning. We really enjoyed touring this church. A must see when visiting this beautiful city.

Beautiful church, especially when watching and listening to a choir concert. My son performed here with about 100 kids and it was amazing. Literally brought tears streaming down my face. The feeling of being surrounded by music and seeing the church full of people, it was just magical.

Quaint little cathedral in the heart of the medieval village. It's beautiful and the staff are kind and more than willing to share their wealth of knowledge of the church and windows and blood alter. It's so peaceful inside and of course if it's blistering hot outside it's worth the few euro to take a break in the cool stones of the church

Beautiful church, a must see! The architecture is simply amazing. The altar is beautiful both in the front and the back! In fact the whole town of Rothenburg is rich in culture and history! How it has been rebuilt since the war. What touched me most were the Stumbling Stones, small brass plates being put in the ground outside the places, from were Jews were taken and sent to concentration camps. Amongst all the beauty and history cannot forget the horrors human beings inflicted on other human beings in the name of color, caste, class, religion, etc.

An interesting, but plain church. I would not say it is particularly special, and there are numerous and far better examples in Europe that far exceed this in terms of relics, artwork, and interior architecture. In fact, it is quite simple in comparison, and you are unlikely to spend much more than 10 minutes there. It is, therefore, all the more surprising that they CHARGE visitors a FEE to visit, which was a first for us. Whilst I am not saying this does not exist elsewhere, I have yet to experience this in our visits to any other church or cathedral in Europe.

The church of St. James is an awe inspiring display of architecture. The church was built from 1311 to 1484 and the organs are impressive. If you have the chance to go during advent, they have organ concerts. The wooden alter is a relic. There are so many detailed carvings, it is almost impossible to see them all with their intriguing details. The stained glass windows are truly a sight for themselves. I cannot imagine all the hours it took to create them.

Yelp
This church is right dab in the middle of this cute town! With the high towers, vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and ornate altars, it pretty much depicts a typical medieval church. However, two MUST SEES are the Twelve Apostle Altar and the Altar of the Holy Blood. Both are masterpieces of carved wood. Walk around, take photos, take in the sights. The 2 euro entry fee is nothing compared to the history inside. I was impressed with the church including the 500 year old wood carvings in intricate and skillful detail. While walking around this picture-perfect town, make sure to visit St. Jackobs-Kirche.

Yelp
There is a 2 euro fee per person .. no thats not alot but I think a church is the one place all should be welcomed with no fee. It was very old and nice but I've been to far more impressive churches that did not charge a fee ..I totally think they should have an area for donations. We stopped for an hour in Rothenburg on our Globus tour and we saw this large church and decided to investigate. We saw so many impressive churches on our 16 days 6 country tour ... but glad we got a chance to see them all.

Yelp
Saint Jacob's Church (St Jakobskirche) was undergoing some pretty major restoration work when we visited but the inside was still *beautiful* Right in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.... Off to the lefthand side of the church, saw the famous 1500s Holy Blood altarpiece by wood carver Riemenschneider. This piece is extra famous in that it holds a rock crystal cross from the 1200s - now *that's* some history! In the center of the church, there was a huge gilded alter of the 12 apostles & it was magnificent The plain whites & dark wood trims in the church really made their alter pieces stand out A worthy & free visit! And hearing the bells in the morning from our hotel was a very nice touch
