"Tip the Staggering Ox The Staggering Ox is a unique beast. This sandwich shop – with locations in Billings, Helena, and Missoula – serves up their creative fare in vertical tubes known as Clubfoots. The idea here is that your delicious sandwich meat won’t spill out the bottom, and the clubfoot is easier to hold than traditional starchy vessels. Hey, whatever works. Gimmicky presentation aside, the sandwiches at the Staggering Ox truly are delicious. My favorites include the Blackfoot (black beans, cheddar, Monterey jack, salsa, and more) and the vertical taco (ground beef, cheddar, black beans, jalapenos, Monterey jack). I’m also a bit of a sucker for their green moon juice that comes spills forth from the futuristic beverage dispenser."

Google
Food is delicious, I love the unique and wide variety of sandwiches, the bread guts, Cheezy Guts, and the pizza. Prices are high. Atmosphere is a five ⭐️. They play good music. The bathrooms are very clean, overall good rate of cleanliness. The staff give excellent service.

Google
I ordered the Italian sandwich and it was delicious. The dipping sauce was also good. The bread is made there and it was so fresh and soft. I love the concept of how they make the bread into a cup. I am definitely going to go back if I am ever in Montana again! The service was very friendly and informative. Prices were also very affordable.

Google
Always a great spot to visit for lunch on a trip to MT. The woman working behind the counter was great and had phenomenal customer service. I am always pleased with how many vegetarian options they have!

Google
I actually really liked the staggering ox. It's a unique twist on a sandwich shop that's entertaining and pretty tasty. I tried the S.O.B. and it was pretty good! The only thing I wish they had is like, plates to catch my crumbs haha. Also, as a side note, the staff are all friendly and funny they all were cracking jokes and seemed to enjoy working there, which I like to see! I will be back to try more food from them!

Google
Overall I like coming here the food is usually very good. It usually has a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. On my last visit (8/11/23) sadly the food and service wasn't up to the usual snuff. The food was very slow to get to the table and it wasn't really worth the wait either. Dry crunchy rice isn't what I usually get here. Hopefully just an off day for the kitchen.

Google
This food was extremely mediocre and overpriced. The bbq sauce was really gross on the hot sandwich we ordered and it came out soggy and lukewarm. The clubhouse was fine but not better than subway or similar places. The two side sauces we had were okay. The potato salad was more than 50% celery and had no flavor. I would not come back here and would not recommend to anyone else.

Google
Unique and delicious sandwiches. The staff was very welcoming and helpful.

Google
Great place to eat here in Billings. Usually busy at lunch but always worth the wait. Staff is always friendly and probably has one of the best radio ads as the poems are great.

Yelp
Really cool place with very friendly and helpful staff! Food and beer were great! Highly recommend!

Christina M.

Yelp
Almost as good as the Helena one. Definitely faster. Best sauces and sandwiches!! Wish I could buy a bottle of creamy basil :)

Yelp
This place was so much fun! It's not too expensive. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to have fun and maybe get out a little aggression.

Yelp
Gotta give some love to a Montana sandwich shop. Especially a friendly and creative one, the French bread clubfoots are their flagship. Bread is great, ingredients fresh, plenty of great combinations to choose from. They have original sauces and I'd say most aren't that great, watered down. What stops me from coming more often is that they really skimp on the meat. Mostly bread and lettuce.

Yelp
Good food. However, the owner of the place, was very rude, short and seemed to be frustrated at me asking when our order would be ready after waiting 20 minutes and seeing numerous orders in front of us being served. Yes they were busy, I understood that, so I asked politely when our food would be ready again after 25 mins. The owner than told me, i was slowing the process by asking when the food would be ready!? Lmao! The owner was not very understanding, she made me feel like I was doing something wrong by just asking and was not very assuring that our food would be ready soon. Again, the food there is good. However, the owner killed our whole experience of enjoying their food. I hope she understands how important customer service and communication is in the future. We will not be recommending this place.

Angie B.

Yelp
Been coming here for over 4 years! I loved this place. They brought out my husbands food with a big hair right on top. I politely sent it back, and was instantly met with attitude. I went up to the counter after a little contemplation and POLITELY asked for a refund. Not a word was said to me, a sorry, nothing. Will never be coming back. :) would give zero stars if possible.

John B.

Yelp
Not much of a fan. Had a specialty sandwich, was supposed to be a Ruben. It was mostly lettuce with a tiny amount of meat, no sauerkraut. I did like the bread. The place is cute, I like the set up.
google avatar

Andi M.

Yelp
Cool way to implement a sandwich. However, low ratings are for not being able to follow instructions on our order. Also, the French onion "soup" was more like a thick stew. We wouldn't be back overall.

Kevin B.

Yelp
My wife and I went into staggering ox today for lunch. Today is Black Friday and they must have anticipated a very busy day because they were very busy there was a lot of traffic. We were able to order get a table and have our lunch within my wife's lunch hour. We were also able to go to a store next-door and purchase a Black Friday gift for someone. I noticed they were staffed for this they were organized And made every effort to give excellent customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is okay. It's like they are trying too hard to be cool. The sexual innuendos are so played out. Food is okay but over priced for what you get. I travel a lot and are once but I would not come back.
google avatar

Charnoa B.

Yelp
We've eaten here a few times. It's never been remarkable, not even recommendable, but it's nice to have something different now and then. The flavor combinations are sometimes odd, with toppings such as cream cheese, salsa, horseradish, and alfalfa sprouts, coming together in one sandwich. The dressings are watery and do little to save the meal from general boredom. However, as okay as it was, it's now off the list entirely. Tonight we ordered a So Crates salad that was almost exclusively lettuce, and not very fresh lettuce at that, a Chernobyl Melt Down, which tasted of fish, even after the sprouts were removed as a possibility, a Rancho Deluxe, which came with at least one moldy pickle, Naoxchos with hardly any toppings, two Turkey Melts with bacon, and Pizza Wheels, which all went uneaten after discovering the pickle. With the plethora of sandwich shops in Billings, there's absolutely no reason to eat here, unless you're into fuzzy vegetables, then this is probably one of the only places you'll want to go.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today, always enjoy the Ox. Clean, good service and good food. Had the Philly Melt with the blue horsey sauce, very tasty. One of our regular lunch stops when in Billings.

Moustapha N.

Yelp
Pretty good place friendly people I recommend it the food is healthy and good I'll definitely come back when I'm back around
google avatar

Sharon A.

Yelp
I was happy to discover this when visiting. I love the one in Helena. I had the French onion soup and it was delicious. The service was fast and friendly.

Natalie O.

Yelp
Weird for over 25 minutes for a DoorDash. It took my 10 just to get to the restaurant. Poor service and rude staff.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
The owners do not treat people well so I refuse to go to this establishment. It has great potential but your business starts with the customers and the owners have built up their own reputation for being terrible to visitors. Wouldn't recommend ever going here. There is TOPZ sandwich shop a few blocks east of here and the pickle barrel a few blocks west, both are much better options and have much more to offer than this dump ever will.
google avatar

Spiro T.

Yelp
Clean restaurant, friendly and quick service, epic sandwiches. This location is up to franchise standards and is a breath of fresh air amongst less desirable alternatives. My Beastie with blue horsey was outstanding!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
I have to admit that this was probably one of the most creative sandwich shops I have been to. The Clubfoot sandwiches here are basically served in what looks like a torpedo or tube of bread. I went with a pulled pork sandwich, which had a pretty good taste and thanks to the creative bread wrap/bowl I didn't have to worry about my sandwich being a huge mess. Another plus was the soda selection, they had a Kiwi lime soda, which was amazing. The staff was friendly and provided quick service all in a clean and fun atmosphere, I recommend the Staggering Ox if you are looking for a quick lunch.
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
Clean, love the layout and taking a yelper recommendation tried the Beastie with the horse radish sauce man great taste and cleared sinus. Prices are fair for the product served. Really enjoyed the flavors, and the creative bread rolls. Man did I mentioned right out of the boxed hooked on the beastie, next time the Sadam, thats how good I thought it was already planning next visit
google avatar

Brandon O.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich shop. I usually get the Nuke or Mt Saint Helens. I got the All American today and loved it.
google avatar

Tawnya S.

Yelp
I love sandwiches that's no lie. Staggering Ox I had to try. The tuna fish with chipotle is my fave. For that sandwich I must rave. Also catered a meeting from the Ox. Had happy faces for thinking out of the box. If you like good food and friendly fellows, Eat at the Staggering Ox on King by Lowe's.

Lenny E.

Yelp
They have so many items squished on their menu board that it is written way too small and very hard to read. They do not take Discover card either, yeah their merchant fees are higher but I own a business and accept Discover card. Would be nice if they would be more flexible with types of payment accepted for the convenience of their customers. The food took a little long to arrive but not too bad. Taste was good, but obviously something was a little funky cuz I went across the street to Big Bear and barely made it to the bathroom before I blew a roast beef and cheese club foot out my ass. Not eating there again, don't really like food poisoning

Ande S.

Yelp
Food is ok, feel like they are getting smaller with the portions. My chicken fajita salad was the size of a side salad, bowls of chili the size of a large cup and charged .85 cents for sour cream. My husbands sandwich had almost no meat. However service was excellent !!
google avatar

Jacy O.

Yelp
Love Staggering Ox for a good sandwich and something a little different! Service is always super quick and friendly. The food is consistently delicious. Have the bread pudding

Yelp
I can't give enough stars for this place. My sandwich is always fresh and delicious. I'm old school and I get the turkey with Ranch sauce. My boyfriend gets the Yo' Momma Osama, which is is flavorful and so savory! The employees are always polite and answer all my questions, if I have any. My last visit was the best, where an employee helped me look through Amazon for similar bakeware so I can mimic their bread all the way home in CA! Such a nice kid, I wish I caught his name. I used to live in Missoula but still visit Montana every year. If I'm in Missoula, I'm getting lunch here! Great place to get a Huckleberry flavored soda of your choice too! Cheers!

Yelp
UPDATED: Thank you for confirming that it's not just me! You're absolutely right that it takes different strokes, and if a $9 pound of lettuce is what some folks truly want in a sandwich, they ought to know where they can find it. You seem to be saying that serving sandwiches in the manner described is your intent, so I'll thankfully steer clear. Maybe I'll head to Chalet Market next time and get more sandwich than I can finish in a sitting for $2 less. Also, just so I'm not marked for a shill, I might recommend Caramel Cookie Waffle. Have you tried their curried chicken salad? Holy smokes! One leaf of lettuce is the perfect amount to tie that heap of goodness together. Seriously, thank you for taking the time to reach out in response. In this age of simple anonymity your ownership of your ownership is impressive. Best wishes, Doug. ___ I tried to like Staggering Ox. Lord knows I tried. I kept trying, and trying thinking maybe I was just having an off day, or maybe Staggering Ox was just going through a rough time. I've finally come to the conclusion that it's not me, it's them. They load up everything they make with so much filler that it's like they're trying to keep whatever deliciousness to themselves. Every one of the last half dozen times I've ordered here I've come away feeling cheated. I just can't in good conscience do it anymore. If I get a sandwich and ask for easy lettuce it's still brimming with lettuce. Easy lettuce and extra meat? It's like they sacrifice other toppings so that they can still stuff it with lettuce. Seriously, I've tried four different ways of asking for less lettuce, and it's like they've got a contractual obligation to Dole or something. The last time I received a lettuce-and-paper-thin-meat sandwich I swore it was the last time. Well, my wife had the idea of skipping the lettuce entirely today. It was Monday and all the restaurants we wanted to order from were closed, so we went ahead and ordered their potato bowl thingy (?). You wanna guess what? It was 80% potato. I didn't actually count, but I didn't have to; if there were more than a half dozen olives in that meal I'll eat the plastic bowl it came in. The bottom line was (yet again) five bites of the flavors I actually wanted when I ordered, and forty bites of cheap, tasteless filler products.

Yelp
This was the worst "pulled pork" sandwich I've ever had. The cut of meat was full of fat nuggets. It appeared they had taken some ham lunchmeat, diced it, and squirted some BBQ sauce on it. By the time it arrived at our table, the bread on the bottom of the sandwich was already completely soggy. There was so little coleslaw in the sandwich that I can't really say if it was or wasn't any good. The only reason they're getting 2 stars rather than 1 is because my buddy had the chicken teriyaki and thought it was good. The restaurant was clean and decorated nicely, for what that's worth.

Callie K.

Yelp
This place is super cool! The vibe is really fun and the staff was super nice. The menu is really interesting and has a lot of unique options and the food was really good. Never heard of bread guts before but they were really good. All together a great experience.
google avatar

Julie G.

Yelp
Great sandwich today for a late lunch ! The employee where I ordered my food was very helpful as there are a lot of good choices. The food tastes fresh and I will eat there again! It is a comfortable place if you are dining alone as I was. I got to sample some delicious chili with a good kick of spice! Definitely original and appealing menu; not a boring lunch place.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
LOVE this place! The sandwiches are fantastic, my new favorite The Cheese Ox, can't rave enough about how good this is, be careful when it firsts comes out though, its super HOT! I normally have to let it set about 5 mins. or so before it's cool enough to eat. Really friendly great staff at this location also, always a pleasure to eat here.
google avatar

Dan H.

Yelp
Some weird wild stuff bakin' up in here! And they wouldn't give so much as a clue as to how they make them funky bread canisters. If I was a local I'd likely have a friend break into the kitchen some overnight to get spy photos. Anyhoo, massive menu. The items we tried were all tasty, especially with dribbles of sauce added with each bite. I'm prolly the only person in the world that would give a crap, but I also really dug the local cherry soda in the dispenser machine. C'mon girls, fess it up...how you make them breads!?!
google avatar

Erin O.

Yelp
I was really excited about trying this place, for some reason. I think they have an interesting marketing plan because it drew me in. I think it was some song I heard on the radio that was initially catchy. Anyways - I forgot my lunch one day and used the opportunity to try this place out. I ordered a warm pulled pork that was a special. It was decent, I guess. It wasn't nearly as good as I had imagined it would be in my head. The cheese was coagulated and hard and the bread got all smooshy. I would go back again, but I think I'd have something else. Its a good lunch spot, but nothing overwhelmingly special, I suppose.
google avatar

Damion W.

Yelp
The employees were pretty engaged in the menu and offered some great recommendations. That was good to see, because I asked quite a few questions. One thing that I learned quickly is, I was overthinking! At the end of the day it is a sandwich. I enjoyed my meal, however; I wasn't impressed with the portions. I ate my sandwich in about six bites, as a matter of fact, I was still hungry when I left and I went to the hawaiian bbq place right up the street and got something else to eat! HAHA! Would I go back, yes. Would I call home about this place, no. A suggestion, offer different sized sandwiches if possible, those with appetites would appreciate it!
google avatar

Cait G.

Yelp
Interesting concept for sandwiches. I got the veggie with ham. It was warm, which was unexpected but not bad. The wasabi ranch was really delicious. It looked like they had a good happy hour. I would definitely come back for that.
google avatar

Robert P.

Yelp
The sandwiches are so different and so good. Love the camel spit sauce. It is the only sandwich where it is proper to give it a squeeze. Highly recommend trying this unique restaurant.
google avatar

Bridgette B.

Yelp
Oh my goodness their food is so good. I had a teriyaki salad and it was wonderful. I can't remember what I got the last time I went but I know it was great too!

Brian H.

Yelp
Once I got used to their ordering method, I really enjoyed this place! The Hen House w/ ranch is excellent. The Rueben was very good as well. Service is always good!

Ami R.

Yelp
My favorite sandwiches. The daily special sandwich is usually what I go for since I like to mix it up and be surprised. When they do spicy sandwich specials I am especially happy. I lovingly refer to them as "barrel sandwiches" :) The location is always clean and the employees are great, quick service. The sauces!! I always get blue horsies and camel spit on the side
google avatar

Russ N.

Yelp
A huge wad of wonder type bread with a lot of lettuce and a wee bit of meat tucked in there somewhere.
google avatar

Cee K.

Yelp
The Ox is weird but great they have everything not just sandwiches, great salads, I would recommend the sob salad, quesodillas are very good. As to the sandwiches I would recommend the yo momma Osama. The shop is always clean the music is a little off. They also did the catering for my wedding, delivered by the main man himself Doug, who by the way is awesome. All I can say is try it at least once. You will love it. They need a second store in the heights is my only complaint.
google avatar

Bethany P.

Yelp
It's so sad because I love Staggering Ox Missoula and have never had anything but the most amazing sandwiches there. The sandwiches at this location in Billings were mostly lettuce and bread hardly any of the yummy topping you would expect. Very dry and boring, and not worth the money.
google avatar

Zach G.

Yelp
Weird shaped sandwiches. Like the bread was made in a soup can. Average at best.

Julie M.

Yelp
Have eaten here twice -- first time had a cold sandwich that was just okay. Dry, but you have your choice of sauces which helped but had bad flavor. Second time had hot turkey sandwich that just came with turkey and cheese. VERY SMALL! I asked them to add lettuce, tomato and onions and they charged me 75 cents EACH to add them (of course no difference if I said "hold" the mustard). We had our sandwiches and then drove over to McDonalds for a snack wrap as neither one of us were any place close to full. Will not be going back a third time.
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
This is a great place to go if you have people from out of town visiting. Chances are they have never seen a sandwich like these! Their quesadillas are huge and awesome. Lots of good things to be had here.

Corey M.

Yelp
Great food, massive menu, and unique bread. A little pricey, compared to most sandwich shops, but I will definitely return. The staff was very nice and helpful to a first time visitor, and the layout of the restaurant was very nice and the cleanliness of the establishment was amazing, thank you. I enjoyed your food.

Yelp
After spending the day in Billings, my kids and I decided to stop in to grab some sandwiches for the road. A friend of mine who lives in another town with a Staggering Ox can never stop raving about them and how amazing they are. Curiosity piqued I was expecting to be blown away, but the sandwiches were just good. The prices weren't horrible, but at the same time I would've expected more sandwich for those prices. The sandwich concept is interesting. (When I brought my husband a sandwich home his response was, "Is this a sandwich from a can?") The ingredients tasted fresh, and my bacon was cooked to my picky perfection. The bread had a nice, light texture, but the sandwich seemed to be lacking in flavor until I liberally slathered the side of ranch provided all over it. All said and done, it was good. We will likely give them another shot in the future.

Brittany D.

Yelp
My family has regularly eaten here for sometime now but this time pretty much made us want to get going. The teriyaki bowls were have the size and not even worth what we paid. We asked for extra chicken got half the chicken that is usually in a regular size serving. One of the sandwiches we had didn't even have everything that was supposed to be in it. It had no meat and was pretty much a a salad in a piece of bread. We decided to say something since we had eaten there so many times and knew how good the food normally was and we were treated with total hostility. So much for treating your customers with respect. We have decided we will not be returning.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Huge menu (can be a bit overwhelming) fresh ingredients and bread baked on site. The cashier could have been more friendly, I informed her I was from out of town and new to eating here. Would come back again.
google avatar

Andi B.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients and fast service! Just grabbed a So Crates Greek salad to go. Really hit the spot. Great price 6.75. Yum!
