We arrived at the Stamford on 7 January on a 44-degree afternoon, expecting the standard we had previously enjoyed here. Unfortunately, this stay was a complete letdown.
Upon arrival, there was no valet, no staff at the entrance, and signage indicated self-parking only. We were forced to park at the Stamford car park, where the ticket machine wasn’t working, boom gates were up, and the car spaces were extremely tight. In the extreme heat, we had to carry our luggage through the car park and search for lifts, arriving at reception already hot, stressed, and sweating—hardly the welcome expected at a 4.5-star hotel.
We were allocated Room 623. The room was stifling hot, with multiple bay windows and no air-conditioning turned on. Once cooled, we immediately noticed a strong mouldy cigarette smell, which required opening the windows.
The room itself was not what I had booked. I later confirmed that I had reserved a Grand King Room, yet we were placed in a Junior City Suite, which staff later referred to as an “upgrade.” This was absolutely not an upgrade.
The bathroom was unhygienic and outdated:
-Aged, calcium-filled showerhead
-Mouldy and dirty flooring and corners
-Old mouldy shower curtain
-Inconsistent water temperature and pressure
After showering, I didn’t even feel clean.
I attempted to contact reception, only to discover the room phone did not work. Reception queues were consistently long, and I didn’t want to cause a scene during what was meant to be a relaxing getaway.
As the stay continued, the condition of the room became increasingly disturbing:
Stained carpets, dusty surfaces throughout
Thick dust on lamps, bedheads, cupboards, wardrobes, and light switches.
-Wardrobe with missing chunks of wood
-Visible mould near the bathroom door
-Dirty window seals
-Stained duvet, chairs, and lounge
Towels were rough and irritating, forcing us to use pool towels instead
My asthma noticeably worsened, which was clearly linked to the dust and poor cleanliness.
We barely slept the final night, feeling dirty, uncomfortable, and unwell, and honestly just wanted to go home.
At checkout, I raised the issue of being given the wrong room. The response was, “Oh yes, you were actually upgraded.” When I explained the condition of the room, the only compensation offered was complimentary parking—parking that was already substandard, self-service, and something we wouldn’t have paid for regardless.
This stay cost over $300 per night, and the room was unhealthy, unhygienic, and unacceptable. I’ve stayed in far cleaner rooms at budget hotels for less than half the price.
Our previous two stays at the Stamford were modern and enjoyable, which makes this experience even more disappointing. It genuinely felt like Room 623 had been unused for weeks or months—a forgotten, last-resort room placed at the end of the hall.
This was meant to be a luxury escape when we truly needed it. Instead, it left us frustrated, disappointed, and counting down the minutes until we could go home.
Something has seriously gone wrong here.
Upon complaining Via Email , all we were offered...25%off our next stay , breakfast and $100 between us to spend at the restaurant. Why would I want to give more money to this place?
