Glenelg was one of the first places I visited in Adelaide six years ago, and I was well overdue for another trip.
Lounging in the shade of a Norfolk island pine tree, I noticed some other picnicking groups with high tea stands. "Gee they're organised" I thought to myself. Then I noticed the empty stands being returned to the Stamford Grand.
Amazing, an al fresco high tea on the beach.
Of course the lure of savouries, sweets and a coffee on a picnic rug was far too tempting. Despite not having a booking, the waitress at The Promenade restaurant inside the Stamford Grand Glenelg was able to seat us for a few minutes while a picnic blanket and High Tea stand were readied. A variety of High Tea packages with different inclusions are on offer, and we opted for the basic High Tea for two.
My first impressions were that the Stamford staff were very organised with their al fresco high teas, providing a picnic blanket and hot drinks in takeaway cups. Secondly, the volume of food on our High Tea for two was very generous, plenty enough for three people to enjoy.
Three kinds of double-decker ribbon sandwiches made up the bottom tier, ham and pickles, smoked salmon on brown bread, and multigrain with cucumber, avocado & tomato. They were all tasty, generous in filling, and of course without any crusts.
The middle tier was comprised of three different cakes, fruit custard tartlets, Belgian chocolate mousse cakes, and raspberry lime "chiboust" which reminded me of junket in texture. The tear shaped chocolate cakes were outstanding, light mousse with shiny ganache topping on a thin cake base.
Rounding out the high tea was eight, still warm, drop scones with strawberry jam or to my delight Belgian chocolate sauce.
For a treat by the beach with a touch of class, you could do far worse than to try high tea picnic. Having tried it outdoors, it's the way I want to take all my future high teas!
