A Geeky Guide to the Scientific Wonders of North America

"Horticulturalist and Wilmington native Stanley Rehder made his life’s work the cultivation of flesh-eating plants. When he passed away in 2012 at the age of 90, the city carved out a small green space dedicated to its beloved “Flytrap Man.”  The Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden occupies three-quarters of an acre behind Alderman Elementary School. Found in one of the world’s few microclimates permitting year-round outdoor growth of such plants, its beds are home to pitcher plants, sundews, Venus flytraps, and other insectivorous species. Visitors are invited to survey the lands anytime during daylight hours, and plant hikes are offered for free each Saturday morning. Interested parties are advised to wear closed toed shoes. After all, these plants have teeth.  In May 2013, the garden found its way into local news when more than 1,000 venus flytraps valued at $20,000 were stolen out of the garden. Officials saw the act as just one in a massive series of flytrap thefts throughout the area, all feeding a massive carnivorous plant black market in the United States. Though the perpetrators of the crime at Rehder Park remain on the loose, the event played a key role in passing a new state law that makes the unlawful taking of a Venus flytrap a felony." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This is a fantastic place to see many Venus fly traps and other carnivorous plants up close! Venus fly traps are only found within a 100km radius of Wilmington, which makes them a huge treasure of this area. There are many signs to help you learn more about the plants in this garden and how to spot them (some are very small). This park is an incredible way to showcase something uniquely beautiful about NC.

This is the first time I’ve ever left a review for something but this place deserves 5-stars. So cool to see native and endemic carnivorous plants all in one place and protected. It was a nice walk with Pitcher plants and Venus Flytraps all along. Most of the wild Flytraps are very small and easy to step on if you get off the trail, please be careful and watch your step if you do wander off.

We went on Tuesday of this week. My daughter has been going for over a year. I was using a walker, so she took photos for me with my phone. The fly traps are grown only within a 100 mile radius of Wilmington, NC. So, they and the other plants have been grown here. Stanley Rehder grew the plants and worked on this beautiful location for 25 yr. He started, cultivated and helped grow this area. The walkway has trees, ferns & 100 yr old moss lining the walkway. The trees are magnolias, pine & oak. All of this park is a tribute to Stanley Rehder and The NC Park & Recreation Department. Here are the photos taken. The walkways and the observation areas are well planned & people of all abilities can enjoy at least some of the park. You do not buy tickets. IT IF FREE TO EVERYONE!

We went for the flytrap frolic and my kids had a great time! It was very hot that day. However, there is some shade along the trail. You definitely want to try to find the different kinds of carnivorous plants that are smaller than you think. It kept my kids entertained.

This little park is behind a school, it is a short walk to the actual plants but they have little plaques to read along the way telling you about the plants. Wear closed goes shoes, it is uneven ground to get into the walk way and we did see some snakes. Overall an easy and fun little outing. You will probably be in and out within 20 min.

A visit at the end of May was perfect. Tons of pitcher plants and Venus fly traps! We spent about 25 minutes. Definitely could have spent more time walking around.

Couldn’t resist going to this since it’s only in this area. Simply laid out with easily found plants. No crowd. Snack and easy to get to. Wheelchair accessible

Pretty cool place to take a walk and escape some of the city-isisms. Variety of carnivorous plants in the “wild” and some factoid plaques to assist along the way. Easy parking and Handicap access to the place in the video after that it’s a little more off-with pavers. Check it out!
