I always enjoy boat transportation. At a cost of $4 or $5HKD, this is a great value proposition as well. There are multiple ferries and the time between departures today was about 20 minutes. The views onboard are wonderful, and I did not notice any major wave issues. The Star Ferry began in 1871, and they are now using Fourth Generation vessels. The crew was friendly and helpful. I look forward to taking this transportation again tomorrow. You can pay via credit card or Octopus card. The whole experience is fairly seamless.

I absolutely loved catching the Star Ferry and would highly recommend anyone visiting Hong Kong to ride it. I feel that it is an affordable way to access the harbour and see both sides of the city. The ferry ride itself is a gentle and calm one. It takes a nice amount of time to travel between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island which allows you to take in all the spectacular views.

The Star Ferry is unmissable when visiting HK and also Kowloon. Affordable, simple to use and so full of character and nostalgia, it offers some of the best views of the skyline you will find anywhere. It is much more than just transport, it is an experience. For me it was fulfilling a lifetime trip. A true Hong Kong icon and a must for first time visitors and return trips alike.

This is not just a useful form of public transportation for those wanting to cross Victoria Harbour between Central (HK Island) and TST (Kowloon). It is quintessential sightseeing for tourists as well, particularly on sunny days. Ferries departure regularly throughout the day. Fare is cheap, you can tap-and-go enter the platform with your Octopus or purchase entry token at the machines outside the entry area. Ride across the harbour is around 5-6 minutes in length.

Although only a short crossing from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon the ferry provides a great way to see both islands from a different perspective, and to see the diverse and impressive architecture that is there. Provides an easy and cost effective way to make the journey. Note that the boarding of the ferry with a buggy (pram/ stroller) or a wheelchair can be challenging, and someone with the ability to negotiate the slope with one of these is needed. A great way to view and cross Victoria Harbour, made even better by the opportunity for American Express customers to make the crossing until the end of 2025 for one dollar.

Star Ferry It is the oldest ferry service and the most pleasant ride to and from HK island and Kowloon Penisula. It is a must for tourists and people who has a few leisure minutes to travel on it. Why? Because it is inexpensive and offers great scenery of HKSAR with good opportunities to take nice pictures of your desired spots. The harbour itself is mesmerizing. We've taken the Star Ferry hundreds of times and it is always a thrill. Victoria Harbour should be one of the official Wonders of The World. The red-sailed, wooden Chinese boats, super wealthy yachts on their way to Macau, the ferries chugging along ... it's magical. I never tire of Victoria Harbour.

It's cheap, always on time, and clean. Can't ask for much more but the views you get going both ways are great. Best way to cross from Kowloon to the Island

Short inexpensive ride to see Victoria Harbour and other places. For those who get sea sick, the boat does sway a bit but again the ride is quick!! I personally enjoyed the views! I bet it looks so much nicer going across at night!!

Star Ferry / Tsim Hsa Tsui - Central (Hong Kong) -- The Star Ferry is legendary and still very cheap. Just HK$5 or about 64 cents for a one-way, ten-minute trip on the upper deck. That's actually over twice as much as it was just a few years back, but hey, it's worth it because it was on the verge of closing. Sure, you can take the MTR and probably get from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island faster, but hey, where's the romance in that? Jamie W and I were finishing up dim sum in Tsim Hsa Tsui and decided to hop on the ferry around 8PM. It was close to empty. The benches have seatbacks that can be reversed depending on the direction the ferry takes. The nighttime views of Victoria Harbor and the surrounding skyscrapers really elevate the ride. We used Star Ferry Pier to cross over between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. It was relatively safe and quite efficient. We just followed everyone and it all worked out! The views are beautiful... especially at night... with the lights reflecting on the water!

First Class views... Take the ferry for the views, take it for an easy way to transport to Kowloon but I can see why many take the Star Ferry for whatever reasons. After returning from a day full of adventures on Hong Kong Island the views and so much more my heart is just full from the day i just had along with Nadine to experience this lifetime moment was just a great way that just start exploring. A late night ride back to Kowloon was just stunning to see the lights and activities around the city and it was the ICC Light and Music Show that just had me at a trance where using the whole building itself gave a fun and beautiful way to display it's brilliance. Get your Octopus card as it's very convenient and useful for not just the ferry but all around town. Thank you!

Incredible ferry where you get to also see the beautiful Victoria Harbor and other buildings on the Hong Kong skyline. Tickets are also very inexpensive. Great experience on the boat as well - highly recommended!

I had considered this a must-do in Hong Kong, but the experience turned out to be a bit anticlimactic, and may not be for everyone. That said, it did offer fantastic views of both sides of Victoria Harbour and didn't take much more time than riding the MTR. Ferries run frequently, and the crossing takes only about 15 minutes. The interior was clean, and I appreciated the clever bench design--seat backs can be flipped to face the direction of travel, adding a nice touch of comfort to the short ride.

The Star ferry should be an iconic part of any visit to Hong Kong. Here it is in 2024, and the fare is still only $0.30 USD for the roughly 10 minute ride across Victoria Harbor. The most popular 2-way route is between the Tsim Sha Tsui and Central terminals, both being in prime business districts of Hong Kong. You can use your Octopus card for payment also. You can get great, scenic photos of both Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula along the way, and also experience very cheaply what it has been like for everyday residents to make this harbor crossing by ferry since 1898!

Star Ferry is a public transportation and tourist attraction in HK, with a fleet of twelve ferries, the company operates two routes. It provides a scenic yet affordable mode of harbour crossing.

We took it from Tsim Sha Tsui to central and back for the view. Fast and not sticky despite mid afternoon trip. There was even an air conditioned area at the front of the ferry. Only wished they ran on greener fuel, the smoke stacks blew black smoke. The multiple buses at the nearby terminal at Tsim Sha Tsui made commuting easy.

We had tickets as part of the Big Bus tour pass and not was only easy to redeem the tickets and board the ferry, but it was punctual! I loved it! The staff is a little rough in the edges but everything works well. The ride to the island is like 10 min only and getting in and out of the boats is very organized.

Taking the star ferry is the scenic way to get across the harbour instead of taking a bus, subway or driving across. It does take longer but it is the cheaper alternative. I wanted to be on the upper deck but got in line for the lower one by accident. There isn't a way to move to and from either level once you're on the ferry. The backs of the seating are movable so you can change it to sit the desired way based on which way the ferry is going.

I'm going to take this ferry from Kowloon over to Hong Kong now. Before the Symphony of Lights show starts at 20:00, I want to be back on the Kowloon side to take in the event. Star Ferry is the best way to get to Kowloon! There are two ferry locations in Hong Kong that drop you off in Kowloon. I took central since it was right by my hotel. Only cost 2.50 HKD! Takes about 15-20 minutes to get from start to the other end. They have set times they leave. Very easy to find. The ferry has 2 levels and fits a good amount of people. It was a pretty smooth ride. Great place to take a panoramic shot of Victoria Harbor.

The boats an docks are a bit old and run down but the ferry is a classic, must-ride experience in Hong Kong to travel from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui. The fare is really cheap and you get a wonderful view of the harbor as you go across. Of course it's not the fastest method compared to the MTR but it's super relaxing, especially at night.

The ferry is one of the reasons why HK has one of the best public transportation systems in the world. The Tsim Sha Tsui ferry terminal looks old, but is functional. There are shops downstairs and as you head to the ferry entrance if you need to grab something to eat before hopping on. On board the ferry, the trip across the harbour was choppy. So you will see the boat move up and down a bit. However the ride is over in about 10 minutes so you shouldn't feel too concerned about getting nauseous. While taking the Star Ferry does not offer the smoothest ride, you can't deny the unbeatable price combined with the wonderful picture taking opportunities it offers.

Super cheap way to get a great view of the city skyline (and get from Hong Kong island to Kowloon / vice versa). Recommend making at least one trip in the evening for the lit up view.

For less than a dollar, you can go on the Star Ferry to enjoy the ocean breeze and the view of the various tall buildings lining the Hong Kong coast. It's more dramatic and beautiful at night, since the buildings will light up. There's even light shows at 7:45 and 8:45pm. Also, you can scan your Octopus transportation card to get access to this ferry. Whether it's day or night, it's a very enjoyable and relaxing boat ride. Definitely worth coming to Hong Kong for.

This is the best deal in town. 270HK takes you from Kowloon to Wanchai or Central. It is airy, efficient running every 10 min to every 20 min on weekends. Not crowded and easy to navigate. It gives you a view of the city that is unparalleled. Have exact change to buy a ticket or use you Octopus card.

I remember taking the ferry in HK back when I was in high school. In fact, we have pictures. If you are an infrequent tourist to HK, I believe ferry trips are a must. Great views of city and it doesn't take too long. This ride was maybe 5-10 minutes. Ferry boats are pretty old feeling. Crowded. But so memorable.

I can't believe how affordable it is to ride the Star Ferry from TST to Central, at only $2.50 HKD one way! While most people use the ferry for daily community purposes, we recently hopped on the ferry for a short 10-15 minute ride across the harbor to Hong Kong Island. You're met with some great harbor views, the beautiful skyline, and some breezy winds as you sail across the waters. We chose the upper platform for our viewing pleasure, seats were plentiful, and people were courteous. Be sure to exchange your HKD $2.50 for a specific "token" in order to pay for the ferry ride. You'll see machines to purchase these special tokens as you get close to the entrance gate. The ferry is old and the ride is bumpy. I mean it's so bumpy to the point that it's scary. We took the ferry to Macau. Heading over to Macau isn't too full but probably because it's it was early at 12:15pm. Coming back was pretty full at 6:05pm. The view heading there is nice (before the ferry going full speed and once at full speed the water splashes on the window and you can't see anything) The custom lineup is pretty quick. So many lanes open heading to Macau and heading to Hong Kong. Staff there are very helpful when you need help.

Extremely short but efficient ferry ride. This ferry runs extremely frequently. I've never had to wait for more than 5 minutes to board the next ferry. Taking this mode of transportation to cross to the other side is the cheapest method, so if you're not in a rush, I highly recommend considering taking the Star ferry. Since this ferry goes immediately across, it's one of the fastest ferry rides. Sitting on either side of the ferry, you will be sure to receive a nice view. The cost of the ferry is less than $1CDN, which is quite cheap. There are two decks (upper and lower deck). The upper deck does cost slightly more, so if you're planning to go for sight seeing, the top is definitely better for the views. However, if you are planning to just cross the ocean, the bottom might be a better option for you.

In addition to being a pseudo tourist attraction, it is taken by plenty of locals who are jonseying for a breezy short cut without having to hit Kowloon or Hong Kong Island via MTR or bus. Unlike the SI Ferry where it features of close look at Lady Liberty and boast free admission, the Star Ferry costs $1.50-$2.50HKD (or $0.19-30 cents USD) and showcases an incredible view of the vibrant HK skyline from both ends. The ride is comfortable and it only lasts about 5-7 minutes each direction. The rocking effect is fairly minimal compared to what I've experienced from other ferries, which should come as good news to our friends who are easily sea sick. During public holidays and weekends, the fare increases to as much as $3.40 (or $.44 cents USD) yet the service remains consistent with little to no drop off. As a result, the ferries are never too crowded and ferry service is only minutes apart from each other. One can board the Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, or Wanchai. Day is the best for photos, while night is a great time to chill on a boat to one's next destination.

Fun and romantic at any time of the day/night. Drops off by ferris wheel with photo opportunities. 15min walk from other attractions and nightlife. Buy via ticket stand. Currency exchange is by McDonalds outside. They do close. The subway also closes too. If don't make it back on time, there are bus options to take around or to the airport.

A one-way trip on the Star Ferry costs 3 HKD (that's 0.39 cents in USD!) and the views truly can't be beat. Let's put it this way, if the Symphony of Lights is a sight to see during nighttime in Hong Kong, taking the Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island or vice versa, is a sight to see during the daytime. The ride lasts only 10 minutes and arguably is just as efficient as the MTR (with easy use of Octopus and all!), only difference is there is less air conditioning! On either side of the harbour, there is plenty to do. From Central alone, the Hong Kong Exhibition Hall is walking distance from the dock, same as it is a short walk to various malls when you arrive at Tsim Sha Tsui, as well. Don't miss out on this inexpensive yet memorable HK experience!

The Star Ferry has been part of Hong Kong for decades and it has seen the changes of Hong Kong. Becoming a British colony to the handover in 1997 and the relocation of the pier on Hong Kong side in 2006. It will never be the same with the new pier now near the IFC. The old location was just opposite to the Mandarin Oriental, right in the heart of Central. They still use the old boats and the fare is still incredible cheap. If you go during the evenings you have a great view on the skyline of Hong Kong.

So I'm one of those guys who will forgo to expensive harbor cruise around Manhattan with all the camera toting tourists and the unintelligible narrative on the crackly loudspeaker and take the Staten Island Ferry instead. And so it goes with the ferries crossing the main waterway in Hong Kong, for what I think was about .40 US per crossing. (Cash only please, small bills! - Ticket office was closed.) You still get all the thrills of nearly colliding with huge barges and container ships in the channel, and some fabulous views of the Hong Kong skyline, which is particularly striking at night, ablaze in carnival like lights that simply glow in the stuff that looks like smog during the day. I should mention for those of you lacking sea legs - I crossed on a calm weather evening, but the water was a little choppy, and these must be flat bottom boats, as they bob around like a cork even when you're boarding and disembarking. Nobody else even seemed to notice, but it makes taking pictures a bit of a challenge when the horizon keeps bouncing up and down. Have fun!

What, the ferry ride is over? We're already docking? I was only planning on taking the ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central, but I enjoyed the view and the quick ride so much that I decided to do a round trip instead of taking the MTR back into Kowloon. I'm used to commuting via the Staten Island ferry in NY, so I was a bit nostalgic for home. Loved the view of the skyline from the vessel and as a tourist, I got plenty of pictures! The ferry fare was cheap, about $2 HKD for the lower deck. It's worth the trip just to take a break from the hustle and bustle of HK.

There are some icons that just can't be missed when you visit somewhere- Times Square in NYC, Piccadilly Circus in London, Effiel Tower in Paris- and this- the Star Ferry, is one for Hong Kong. Starting back in 1898 and having retained the same name and pretty much the same format ever since, this ferry serves passengers going across the harbor from TST to Wanchai and Central (the latter being the more important route). It is important in two sense: 1) its cheap and 2) its the best way to view Hong Kong's most notable landmark: Victoria Harbour. Its a cheap form of transport- crossing the harbor for $2.5 is still a bargain by any stretch of the imagination. For this you can visit the new pier in Central (a shameless copy of the first/ second generation pier), the ferry itself which are all named "--- Star"- they have a distinct two level design that harks back to the beginning of the company. Crossing the harbor is a quick but not rushed affair, it takes around 10 minutes depending on traffic in the harbor and it gives you an unobstructed view of both sides of the harbor- best photography location if you ask me. Those who get seasickness should not be too concerned as the ride is rarely choppy- though you do get the moments especially on days when the harbor is busy or its just a windy day when it does bob around a bit. On disembarking o the Kowloon side you also get to see the older of the two piers, not structurally interesting but still a taste of the old days nonetheless. The trip across the harbor gives you a moment to stop and think, to contemplate how pretty this city is and how Hong Kong still remains a gem to all of us.

Love the new Central dock though it's now quite a hike from Central. On a hot sucky day I can imagine it being quite a slog of a walk to get to the MTR. Always select the upper deck. The views are best on the left side of the boat going to Central and right side coming from Central. You'll need to position yourself closer to the gate and hustle down the ramp to get a seat on the rail if you want to take photos. They go fast. A timeless Hong Kong classic.

I just love the Ferry and take it anytime I can when I need to get from Hong Kong to Kowloon or vice versa. Historic, efficient, spacious, fresh air, beautiful, quick On this route, you can catch the boat near the giant farris wheel (just take the walkway out to the pier) when on the Central side. On the Kowloon side on this route, you catch the boat near the stores on the dockside across from the giant clock tower. You can buy single tickets or use your Octopus card. It takes about 10 minutes to get from one side to the other. Boats run all day with the last one at 10:30PM (I think). A great way to travel for a local and a definate must for any visiting guest of mine.

The Central-TST route is the most popular cross-harbour Ferry Route in the city, and is the only remaining star ferry service that still uses both decks on regular revenue services. Service is very frequent, with headways being 6 minutes during peak hours (around 8am-8pm on weekdays) or 8 minutes during weekends. The ferry is noticeably busier during weekends possibly because the ferry is seen more as a leisurely form of cross harbour transit since it is significantly slower than the other options. Despite its slow speed, it is still popular among local commuters and tourists alike due to the cheap fares and excellent harbour views respectively. Both decks are very cheap, but the lower deck is usually 50 cents cheaper. In the summer, you should keep in mind that there is an air conditioned section on the upper deck in the summer, but the entire lower deck is never air conditioned. If the ferry is equipped with a bathroom (they usually aren't), they will be kept out of the service. If you need the bathroom, they are usually available at the pier. There is a bathroom for the entrance to the upper deck or past the turnstiles for the lower deck boarding area at the Tsim Sha Tsui pier. There are also bathrooms past the turnstiles at the lower deck boarding area at the central ferry pier. I probably won't call them clean, but at the very least, they aren't particularly dirty either. While Hong Kong over the years has changed quite significantly, you can still experience a chunk of old Hong Kong and the nostalgia surrounding it as you ride ferries that have (depending on the ferry) served Hong Kongers for over 50 years. (All current revenue service ferries are 3rd generation ferries. There were some 4th generation ferries, but most of them were scrapped except for World Star, which was converted to one of the tour ferries). Even though the crew no longer opens and closes the gangplank manually like they used to, you will still be able to experience the old fashioned "no frills" and "no nonsense" vibe that Hong Kong to a great extent established its brand from.

The Star Ferry is the easiest and cheapest way to see Hong Kong and Kowloon! Seriously, it's about $.50 US each way. The Star Ferry is really well maintained, the benches are really nice, and the operation just works really well. It's the perfect way to go back and forth between the two sides, and drops off at convenient Central & Tsim Sha Tsui.

I LOVE THE STAR FERRIES! I remember trips to Hong Kong Kong in the 1970s and 1980's. So much has changed, but not these little ferries! Now there are many options to cross the harbor and most people use the metro under the water. The crowd on the ferry is often small. I think many like me are on the ferry just for fun, just for memories. Cost is 2 HK$ or about 26c USD. You can use your Octopus card, or buy a token from a machine. Then drop the token in to enter. The ferry system started in the late 1880s, but the ferries now in use are from around 1961-1963. So these are the exact same ferries I rode in decades ago. I like that. If your visiting take the ferry at least once! The card your using for the metro can get you on the ferry too and you get some good views of the harbor. Enjoy!

I don't care if you get seasick or are afraid of boats. I'm both and I don't like to swim. So suck it up and board a classic Hong Kong tradition to connect between Hong Kong island and Kowloon. It's a cheap attraction (by American standards) and offers incredible views of both sides of the city. When it comes to getting the sites and sounds of the pulse of a city, the waterway separating the two sides of this city led to its rise as an international gateway and it is an amazing way to hear and experience the lifeblood of this city. Plus, you can say you boarded a tiny little red boat and take some awesome selfies at night with all of the lights doting the skyline as your background.

Two of the best things about Hong Kong is its harbor view and great transportation system. With the Star Ferry from TST to Wan Chai, you get the best of both worlds. As a tourist, it's a must to get on the water and explore HK's islands...or at least the water dividing HK Island and Kowloon. The TST Star Ferry terminal is on Canton road, right outside Ocean Terminal (Lane Crawford side). The ride's only 15 minutes long at the most, and along the way, you're subjected to views of the towering office buildings on the Hong Kong Island side, the Avenue of the Stars, the Science and Art Museums on the Kowloon side. The ferry is a two-tiered affair, with the bulk of the seats (hardwood plank style) in the center and the end with single seats. The hardwood plank seats hve a metal backrest that can be moved left or right, depending upon which direction the ferry's headed. Before switching the backrest over, however, make sure all seated occupants are off the bench, or else you'll sweep a wizened old Chinese woman to the floor. (I thought she was part of the decor. It was an honest mistake.) Nobody sells peanuts or popcorn on the ferry and there are no bathroom facilities. The terminals are also pretty basic, with a few shops selling candies or baked goods. THe waiting areas also have few seats. For a very minimum amount of money, the Star Ferry is a great way to see HK harbor, day or night. The trip to Wan Chai deposits you next to the HK Exhibition Center (great way to get to and from an exhibition without fighting hoards in the subway).

Still one of the cheapest mode of transport in HK. Its a nice crossing from Kowloon to HK. On today's sailing, a couple were running around in their wedding tuxedos and dresses doing up their wedding pictures. Great backdrop for photos. The ferries are old but still well maintained. Down to the hinges for the seat backs. You cannot beat the views of Victoria Harbour from the ferry.
