Starbucks Dazaifu Tenmangu Omote-Sando – Dazaifu, Japan - Gastro Obscura

"In Japan, shopping streets that run towards major shrines or temples are quite common and often known as omote-sandō or nakamise. Quaint and busy, they typically boast a number of souvenir shops, teahouses, and restaurants, some of which may be more than a century old. Even on such streets, international chains such as McDonald’s and Starbucks are not uncommon. But some of their outlets, such as the Ninenzaka location in Kyoto, go the extra mile to fit into the area, incorporating unique designs. Such Starbucks outlets are officially called Regional Landmark Stores and currently 28 of them exist across Japan (out of 1,800-odd locations). The Dazaifu Tenmangu Omote-Sando location, however, stands out with its striking modernist design. Jutting out of its façade is an interwoven web of cedar timber, slotted together diagonally and leading visitors into the dreamlike interior. Designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the bizarre lattice was made using a traditional method of Japanese architecture called kigumi. By slotting cut pieces of wood together, it can create the framework and keep it solid without the use of nails, making the structure especially durable and resistant to rust. Natural and soothing, the creamy brown timber seems to radiate illumination all by itself… and it does. Almost. Some of the lights are actually embedded in the tip of the wood, such as those hanging above the counter. In addition to the lighting, Kuma also took charge of the interior design down to the smallest detail, from the miniature garden at the entrance to the comfortability of the couches. At the back behind a glass wall is another garden, where a plum tree—the symbol of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine—stands, also doubling as a smoking area. Know Before You Go The Starbucks will be on your left hand as you walk up the Omote-Sando street towards Tenmangu Shrine from Dazaifu Station—it’s easy enough to spot. While you’re there, don’t forget to try umegae-mochi rice cake at one of the shophouses along the street as well; it’s a local specialty tricky to find elsewhere." - Fred Cherrygarden

One of the most beautiful Starbucks locations I’ve visited! The architecture blends perfectly with the traditional surroundings of Dazaifu, featuring a stunning wooden lattice design that’s both modern and respectful of the area’s heritage. It’s a cozy spot to relax after visiting the shrine. Drinks and service were exactly what you’d expect from Starbucks—reliable and consistent. However, seating is very limited, so I recommend looking for a seat before ordering your drinks. A must-visit for architecture lovers and coffee fans alike!

The Starbucks at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka is more than just a coffee shop, it’s a stunning work of art. The store blends seamlessly with the sacred surroundings, featuring over 2,000 interwoven wooden sticks that create a mesmerizing lattice effect. The flowing structure mimics the surrounding forest, harmonizing modernity with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The unique design making this Starbucks a must-visit for architecture lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike. A true masterpiece where culture, nature, and contemporary design unite.

This Starbucks outlet has a very unique design so unlike other outlets. It has a lot of wooden beams placed along its roof and sides. Maybe due to its uniqueness, it’s so crowded, finding a seat at peak time is impossible. The staff even mixed up my order with another similar order, maybe too stress out from so many non stop orders. They hardly have time to clean up the seats. 🤪 a victim of its social media popularity 😉 i would just recommend a visit to see the design as the drinks are the same as other Starbucks.

Special Starbucks with wood as the theme, there's special cups made by local artist which is solely for this shop. Love it.

Interesting architecture that stood out along the street. But way too crowded and hard to find seats for a family of 5. Staff were friendly and handed out drip coffee samples to promote their Jpn-ltd edn drip coffee glassware! Seasonal earl grey floral frappucino was unique.. but the hojicha latte lacked the richness as compared to Teavana at Hakata central.

The Starbucks store is situated in the tourist attraction, with a spacious view. A greeting from Taiwan.

The Starbucks in Dazaifu is a must-visit, not just for a coffee fix but for its stunning architecture. Set amidst the traditional surroundings of Dazaifu, this Starbucks is housed in a beautifully designed building that blends modern elements with the charm of Japanese craftsmanship. The wooden beams, sliding doors, and minimalist interior create a peaceful, serene atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for relaxation. What makes it particularly famous is its Instagram-worthy design—every corner feels like it was made for a perfect photo. Whether it’s the elegant, traditional-style exterior or the chic interior with its warm wooden tones, the café offers plenty of photo opportunities for those looking to capture something unique. It’s no wonder this location has become such a popular spot for visitors looking to enjoy a drink while soaking in the beauty of its architecture. A great place for both coffee lovers and photography enthusiasts alike!

Conveniently located along the street to the temple. Supposedly to be made of environmental material for the construction of the store. Took many photos of the place. Staff was friendly and courteous. The store was spacious and had sufficient seats. It would be great to have a seat inside and just relax. On the side note, I could not find the man’s toilet but found a lady and handicap toilet instead.

Yelp
After 3 hours of cultural and educational exposure at the iconic Dazaifu Tenmangu Complex and the Kyushu National Museum it was time to rest my swollen puppies and treat my wife and me to some cultural caffeine. Extremely popular location among local visitors and international tourists alike. Staff are so patient and upbeat while dispensing product information. Line moves smoothly and just about everyone chilling while enjoying mellow vibes. It almost reminds me of the the Manoa StarBucks in the 808 State.

Yelp
An unique Starbucks near Dazaifu Shrine in Fukuoka, Japan. With over 21,000 Starbucks branches around the world, it is quite impressive to be ranked as one of the top 10 coolest or the most beautiful Starbucks in the world. This Starbucks is so famous, I was more excited about visiting here more than Dazaifu Shrine (main tourist attraction of this area). This is a quite a controversial statement I just made. I am admitting that a coffee shop interested me more than a national treasure. Enough is said about Kengo Kuma and Associates' architectural design using 2000 wooden batons, so I won't get into that. What I wanted to share is that this is the BEST place to enjoy famous Japanese style sweets "Umegae-Mochi". You can get this Mochi from various places on this Omotesando street. We got one from "Kasanoya", but I am sure others do as good of a job. Technically, I am sure that you are NOT allowed to bring in outside food to eat here. However, most Starbucks are quite relaxed about this rule. I figure that they make enough money on coffee and latte drinks, they don't need to enforce the "no outside food" rule as much. However, don't take advantage of their niceness and go overboard by bringing in a full course meal.

Yelp
LOVE STARBUCKS! when I found out about this location I just had to see it for myself. It took 3 trains and about 35mins to reach there from Jr Hakata Station. I walked in and sat there for 2hours with my Iced Green Tea and Quiche (yummy) the wooden sticks reminded me of CHOPSTICKS (Hashi) great architecture ! The only thing I missed is the WIFI , you would need to sign up for a Japan FREE WIFI account before you enter the store then you can log in. you will love Dazaifu ! so visit if you have a chance so many shops in that area with great souvenirs

Yelp
The Starbucks in Dazaifu near the Dazaifu Tenman-gū Shinto shrine is arguably the most interesting Starbucks architecturally in the world. This is no cookie cutter Starbucks coffee shop. A Japanese architect was hired to design this Starbucks and the results were truly unique. The exterior of the Starbucks is covered in wooden baton sticks and inside there are over 2000 more of them that cover the interior. I agree with Guillaume's assessment of the interior having a very cave-like feeling. There is a small ceiling window to allow light into the shop. The furniture inside is modern and the interior is actually quite minimalistic. There is a wall art display here that resembles the owl in the TripAdvisor logo. As for the menu items, most of the beverage items are the same as in the US. Though there are some unique food offerings specific to Japan like waffles and crostini. As you would expect in Japan, matcha lattes are offered. And so are hojicha lattes which I have not seen elsewhere. Ordered a matcha latte and a cinnamon roll. The latte (¥480) actually costs more than in the US. Strange since this is Japan. Maybe they use higher quality tea, but I did not discern a noticeable difference in taste. As for the cinnamon roll, it was nicely sweet. Tasted better than the baked goods in the US. Service was friendly. A staffer brought my latte and pastry to my table and included actual silverware rather than plastic ones! And for those who like to keep connected, there is free Wi-Fi here. Though I forget if you could simply log in or if you had to register on a site to get access. If you are visiting Dazaifu, this Starbucks is worth visiting or just taking a picture of outside since it is on your way to the shrine.

Yelp
This Starbucks is a must-see when you are on your way out of the Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine (太宰府天満宮). Not for the coffee: as usual for Japan, it is extra-weak by American standards. The reason you should go is that this store is famous for its architecture. It was built in 2008, and designed by Kengo Kuma and associates. The interior has 4.4km of sticks (over 2,000 total), arranged to create a cavernous (cave-like) feeling. Wood is the most traditional building material for Japan, and this architecture brings this ancient material into the modern space.
