The Houston Starbucks Made Famous By Comedian Lewis Black Is Closed - Eater Houston

"A Starbucks location in River Oaks made infamous by comedian Lewis Black has shuttered. The Starbucks, which is across from another Starbucks and a quarter mile from yet another Starbucks, was the subject of a viral joke in which Black opined that he’d found the end of the universe in Houston. A commenter on Reddit indicated the location, on the southeast corner of Shepherd and West Gray, may have closed due to a rent hike." - Brittanie Shey

Ordered a caramel frappe via mobile. Frappe was all liquid; no ice/slush. Went back to have it remade. The second one was slightly better than the first but still too “watery”. The young lady working the drive-thru window was extremely kind and accommodating when I came back asking to have it remade. She was very personable and had a nice tone and was also apologetic. 3 stars are for her great service. Probably won’t go back to this location because of the drink.

Google
I got Summer Berry lemonade and literally 60 percent of it was ice. I finished it in a couple of minutes. I got less ice when I ordered it at the AIRPORT. Pleaseeee, for a six dollar drink, at least make it worthwhile!! I could get an actual boba for the price I paid for it. Never again.

Google
Have been in this Starbucks a couple of times since this visit. Bought a Pistachio Cream Cold Brew. Tastes great! Enjoyed. It's quieter than usual. Sat in for a while. Everything was great! 😃👍🏼

Google
Efficient & Fast, friendly. Made my custom drink PERFECT. Watched the staff through the drive-through window and how they worked together and made my drink right and so quickly. It was like an assembly line. I absolutely love to see it and the cashier's friendliness and smile. I had to pull over and put this review because people are always quick to give negative feedback but never think to give good feedback. Props to the team. Went through drivethru in less than 5 mins that was impressive. Visited on Thursday 8/1/24 at 8:55am. God Bless this amazing team!

Google
Wish I could give this location zero stars. Americano drive through took 10 minutes. Just drove off and paid $5 for a black coffee, seem to have no sense of customer service!

John D

Google
One star for the espresso shot, but I LOVE the feta wrap! Most bitter awful tasting espresso shot. Dilute it down with enough sugar, syrup and milk and I guess I understand why people like the coffee here?!?!

Adam Diab

Google
Upon ordering a drink with no ice, the barista refused, citing store policy. What was particularly disheartening was the tone in which the refusal was delivered, which felt inappropriate and unprofessional. While I understand policies, the manner in which they are communicated can greatly affect the customer experience. I hope the cafe addresses this issue to ensure all patrons feel valued and respected. Also, I ALWAYS got my coffee with no ice so I NEVER heard of that policy that she made up.

Google
This parking lot is STUPID. Why is it split? Why is there a ONE WAY making it where you can’t get to the proper part of the parking lot without driving around the block if you miss the correct entrance. You would think River oaks would have the money to make this not my problem.

Yelp
11/21/2017 11 AM Get rid of the Kid at the drive thru window who hasn't a clue what is going on ... No wonder the drive thru line was backup to west Grey street.. Either he's Oblivious or High... Big Disappointment!!! 03/20/2018 what is Going on with the staff?!?! The service has become slow especially the drive thru, and the store isn't busy.. Spaced out staff hadn't a clue what the customer ordered.. Hire staff that want to work and that are Bright! Always my favorite spot..pet peeve of the abuse of the Handicapped parking with no enforcement 04/12/18 PLEASE GET Rid of the Annoying SINGING Barista on the drive thru window, Annoying as Hell!!! Also know what you have available in pastry's instead of making your customer wait and then be told st the window we are out of what you ordered, then wait some more while The drive thru Barista waddles back to the pastry case taking his time to get your order.. I was not Amused!!

Jim

Yelp
Rude service, slow service and then get your drink wrong frequently. I will make my coffee at home from now on

Yelp
I was having the worst morning and decided to come to Starbucks to cheeer myself up all for them to make my order wrong & it was the simplest order . So Thank you for that

Yelp
Had the venti Java chip Frappuccino with no whip cream and an affrogotto shot. The Associate was pleasant, friendly and very understanding. The ambiance was of a Seattle coffee shop

Yelp
Glad to find Starbucks inside the River Oaks Barnes and Noble on a warm day. Overall it's a nice store but I would truly appreciate it if the manager would counsel employees against calling customers, who are total strangers to the barista, "sweetie" or other terms of endearment. I don't know if this is directed only at women who are perceived to be older or if it happens to all female customers--and I'm sure it's well-intended--but, honestly, it sounds condescending and rude. If you have to call me something, "m'am" works just fine.

Yelp
The Starbucks in the River Oaks Shopping Center is much like any of the others - cordial baristas serving brews to order, with a seating area that's comfortable. Not everyone agrees on how good their beans are, but plenty of people go by because it's comfortable, and this location is no exception. However...I have to withhold one star, and it's not because of the place itself - it's for its parking arrangement. As of recently, parking is no longer free of charge. If you plan on staying over 30 minutes, you'll be shelling out an additional $2 for your visiting experience: a platoon of new, dark blue metallic permanent signs announce that if you haven't been over there lately. That might not sound like a lot at first glance, but Kimco Properties - the ones who run the center and its associated parking - apparently decided the answer to "How Can We Make More Money?" to be "Charge for what used to be free." In all the years that Weingarten, the previous owners, held the area, there was NEVER a charge to park. I shudder to think what the first tow will be like for a customer who overstays by 15 minutes. Or will there be violation stickers...or booting? You can get creative with alternatives to paying, of course. You can take the bus, bike over, or park and walk, especially if you're over there often. This is a bad decision for businesses in the center, and I feel bad for them. Get your money somewhere else, Kimco. Don't push it down to ordinary customers.

Yelp
The service is so SLOW! And for the lady to be rushing and yelling in the speaker while I'm figuring out what to order.
google avatar

Yelp
This is our go-to Starbucks the Service is mostly fast and friendly. Food is always so good with the heat, the serving size and everything else. We didn't go inside but when we did a few other times it did not look bad at all, clean, nice and friendly.
google avatar

Fox E.

Yelp
Not to be confused with Barbucks which are dollars you can only spend on alcohol in taverns and such. This is the Shepherd Drive location and it does a good job and in a pretty expensive area it doesn't even feel as expensive as it usually does in cheaper areas. Not bad then. Service is pretty nice but still leaves something to be desired.
google avatar

Valerie C.

Yelp
With the storm hitting the lines everywhere are so long but this Starbucks location still managed to bring my order out so fast! I greatly appreciate it so much!

Ervin G.

Yelp
Best shaken espresso I've had so far, compared to other Starbucks in the street , friendly staff
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
40 minutes to get a drink inside. They were busy? Maybe a little but not the busiest I've seen. This was a Sunday morning. The reason this store is busy is because they're slow and have to remake orders. The "manager" has one of the worst attitudes ever. The drink I had was not even correct. 0/5 stars because there are so many other shops to choose from.
google avatar

Rose P.

Yelp
Starbucks...It's always nice to roll down the window to order whatever suits my coffee comfort needs. This ordered was for a frapp I've never had before. Chocolate Cookie Crumble Crème. Chocolatey pieces throughout, mocha sauce, whipped cream, cookie crumbles, and more drizzle. Spectacular.
google avatar

Mercedes S.

Yelp
Ordered a pink drink with extra strawberries and blackberries. They didn't add any strawberries and barely had any blackberries. The drink was made well though!

Yelp
I've lost count of the Starbucks I've checked out in my day. This one is a goodie. Strangely enough there are two Starbucks right across the street from each other off of West Gray in River Oaks. They are literally right next to each other which makes no sense to me. Alas, I chose to go to this one because it was a right turn instead of a left turn. Solid reasoning, am I right? They have a small parking lot but I was able to find a spot on a weekday afternoon. This location is well maintained and has some comfortable seating, which is where I sat. No complaints. While Starbucks isn't my favorite coffee chain, I appreciate their strong WiFi, tea options, and rewards program.

Abigail M.

Yelp
Takes forever to get a mobile order inside. Meanwhile the drive thru is moving steady. It would be faster to just go through drive thru rather than order on the app. Took 20 mins to get drink inside, while about 10 cars went through line.

Lashondra B.

Yelp
So normally I don't have any issues with Starbucks at all however this morning I wanted coffee and arrived at 7:30 because I knew I had to be to work for 8'am . I placed my order along with other guess they received their order I did not receive mine I politely asked the cashier is my drink in the queue she told me it's the sixth in line and kinda rolled her eyes a little bit I can tell she was agitated and she's letting me know it's a very busy morning at this time it's 755 I understand it's busy but when everyone place their order before and after me and they received their drinks and I'm still here and I didn't receive my drink until 806 am I think the polite thing to do was to actually ask the customer hey I see you're still here after the crowd that was with you have left to make sure that my drink was coming not for me to constantly ask is my order coming up
google avatar

Makenzie M.

Yelp
I'm only giving 2 stars because the staff is always so nice to me. I've been stopping at this Starbucks in the morning when I want something better than the lattes I make at home. Unfortunately I would just be better off making something at home. The past few time I've gone they have completely butchered the salted caramel cold brew. Only putting a fraction of foam and it not tasting much like caramel at all. The foam makes that drink and they keep messing it up. I just visited now with my boyfriend asked for the SCCB and they said they were out. No problem! We ordered 2 normal caramel lattes (one with whole milk one with oat) The oat milk one came out great. But we are almost positive they gave my boyfriend a venti cup of whole milk with a caramel drizzle... I don't think I'll be returning to this location anymore. :(

Yelp
This Starbucks is always packed and why I crossed the street when I was two stores down from the other one across the street, I will never know. My son had me repark three times to get inside the lines, but the drive thru is always backed up and I don't like being stuck in a line. Even though we went in, the wait was still long. Nice Baristas, just not enough...
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
The wait is forever, inside or out. They need more employees or warn customers inside it will take 30 minutes to get a latte after you order.

Mike B.

Yelp
Have no idea how the food is here nor the coffee. I'm a huge Starbucks fan, but the service here is incredibly slow and rude. Almost to the point of being surly. Today I walked away from the counter for the third day in a row, simply because the person manning the counter chooses to spend far too much time, chatting with her friends and waiting on customers. When they finally do serve a customer, the attitude is unspeakably rude.
google avatar

Dave O.

Yelp
This was my first visit to this location and I found it to be a pretty unique store in regards to the layout. The staff was very friendly and the place looked well maintained they were wet mopping while I was there and the place looked pretty good. The exterior was decorated with Christmas lights as were a lot of the neighboring businesses. The drive through looks a little challenging and the parking is limited fortunately as I pulled in there was a car leaving a few cars behind me weren't so lucky. Like most parts of Houston the traffic can present issues getting in or out of a lot of the area businesses it's not so bad if you already have your drink in hand...
google avatar

Mykala M.

Yelp
Literally the worst location in the downtown area. The staff is rude. I waited over 40 minutes for them to make my drink wrong and then get mad at me. So yeah I definitely will not be back ever to this location. But check out the location in height they are amazing.
google avatar

Catherine N.

Yelp
I love this Starbucks! Before I go to work in the morning I come into this exact one. Granted, I'm always sleepy and in need of a boost of energy they always greet and treat me so warmly. Every employee there has been nice and courteous I will definitely keep coming here. My drinks have never been made wrong and even if they were they're usually happy enough to fix it for me if you know, you tell them. Then again, I'm just a simple gal who just orders a caramel macchiato all the time, but I'm always happy with it. That being said, I will definitely continue to come back.

Jayce J.

Yelp
The business is closed 2 hours early; they left a paper sign without explanation or justification. This is after stopping at the location down the street that is closed for no apparent reason. Neither app nor website lists these changes. Free market capitalism: yea, you can open and close whenever you want, but treating me badly means you lose all of my future business.

Yelp
Like Farrah, I, too, was confused as to which Starbucks on Gray Street this was! So I had to Googlemap it, and learned it was the one in River Oaks Shopping Center on the corner of Gray and Shepard (next to B&N). I like this Starbucks because it has plenty of seating and friendly baristas. The only downside is the parking lot. It's awfully small and it's very easy to "accidentally" go the wrong way on any of the surrounding parking lots or streets! Let's just say, this Starbucks rewarded me with not only a lovely beverage but also with a lesson about Houston roads (entry ways to parking lots). So, thank you for the edification, Starbucks. Thank you.

Yaucet T.

Yelp
Hi , today I was on this Starbucks I'm spend on 5 coffees and stay with my little dog Boston terrier Bella that she is a Boston Terrier very trained and educate she is a service animal emotional and some employee come to me and told me I can't be with the dog inside the coffee store I think this is ridiculous for any people almost everyone have dogs on this city also we pay very high price for a coffee we deserve better for sure I'm not back to this place what is the different on this place because is river oaks ? Why others Starbucks is allowed ? We live on 2022 everyone has dogs this are animals Starbucks make lots of money from us !
google avatar

Rebecca T.

Yelp
I can't get to work with out my morning Grande white mocha coffee I absolutely love this location the staff is always so kind great way to start the my day.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
This is my go to spot! Drive through is super convenient, staff is always super friendly, and the drinks are consistent. Usually rotate between ordering a soy latte, americano, and caramel macchiato. Love Starbucks and this location is great!

Eden W.

Yelp
Visit this Starbucks on a daily basis they have great drinks, awesome service, and a the perfect atmosphere!
google avatar

Lawrence K.

Yelp
Ordered a latte and breakfast sandwich. The sandwich came before the latte, sat and waited for my latte, watch 12 people get there drinks, I had to go up and ask for mine, come to find out that it had been made and no one bothered calling out my order was ready, cold latte, lukewarm breakfast sandwich and nothing was done to warm my sandwich or make a fresh drink. Every time I come into this Starbucks there is always some confusion and or issue.
google avatar

Arie M.

Yelp
I prefer this Starbucks over the Starbucks across the street and the other Starbucks in the bookstore across the parking lot. It just seems more of a Starbucks to me because parking is a little better (although I'm not sure if you can park on the other side and walk here or not) and there is more seating. It does get a bit cold inside however but I guess it's better than being hot while drinking a hot beverage. They also stay open later than many other Starbuckses in the area.

C H.

Yelp
Baristas need to unionize into buying a watch so that they can open on time. I hate walking to this location to find they're unlocking the doors 15-20 minutes late.
google avatar

F A.

Yelp
I am a regular Starbucks customer and it has been a while since i had something so perfectly made. I picked up a mobile order today at 1pm of a tall Pumkin Cold Brew and it was made so well and amazing!!! The taste was a perfect balance of all the ingredients! BRIANNA you did an amazing job. I called the store to ask who made it.
google avatar

Farrah A.

Yelp
Crap, the initial review I wrote for this place was intended for the Midtown location waaaay down W Gray. So I deleted it... But now I'm still confused. Is this the one on W Gray and Shepherd? Or the one *right* across the street on W Gray and Shepherd? Ah, this is the one with a drive-thru. I'm usually on the wrong side of the street to use the wonky drive thru, yet their tiny parking lot rarely has spaces. ...I tend to go the other. More parking and I can just walk to all the nearby boutiques I love.
google avatar

Kate D.

Yelp
1) they never seem to have what I want. 2) I only go there because it is a drive through 3) they messed up my order twice. The first time they forgot to toast the bagel and forget the cream cheese spread I ordered. When I get back to the office, I called to let them know they didn't give me the cream cheese. The associate passed me on the manager, who refused to acknowledge the problem. She said if you I bring the order back, she will give me the cream cheese. Which is ridiculous, I'm not going to leave my work in a middle of a work day to get a $2 item that they fucked up. 4) they also forgot items for other people I know. Overall, if you can avoid this place, avoid it at all cost. Go to the one right across the street, 1000x better.
google avatar

Anh L.

Yelp
The drive-thru went really fast and the cashier was very friendly. I ordered an acai berry and I like that it wasn't too sweet or too syrup-y and it didn't have that nasty after taste. It was pretty good. I definitely would stop by here if I'm craving for a starbucks and I was in the area. The big downfall is the location. The area is under construction and it's really hard to turn in and to get out. The traffic in that area is crazy! I would definitely avoid this area until construction is done or go during slow hours. I don't want to wait in traffic too long.
google avatar

Karl S.

Yelp
This Starbucks was super sketchy, the restroom was a nightmare and the staff was very unfriendly.
google avatar

Shannie M.

Yelp
I get Starbucks almost every morning before work or before working out, it's so yummy you can never get tired of it! My favorites are a Grande coconut milk latte with a banana nut bread(warmed) sometimes I'll get the egg white with turkey bacon breakfast sandwich.... so good!

David S.

Yelp
My usual Starbucks drink is a cold brew coffee. I'm not gonna nitpick over inconsistency in the amount of cream from one location to the next, but this location 9 times out of 10 when I order a cold brew, I get an iced coffee. Two things on this: 1, they taste nothing alike. 2, cold brew is more expensive than the iced coffee. I think the iced coffee tastes awful, which is why I buy the cold brew. I usually don't frequent this location because of this, but today I stopped in there out of convenience. I ordered my usual and I watched the "barista" pour my coffee out of a pitcher she pulled from the fridge. She handed to me, I took a sip, looked at the tag on the cup that says cold brew and asked her if this was cold brew or iced coffee. Her response was to ask me, "Oh, did you want cold brew?" I told her yes, handed her the cup and told I wasn't gonna drink that because it tastes like poison.
google avatar

AJ G.

Yelp
It's Starbucks. When you've been to one, you've been to them all. There is literally another one right across the street within walking distance so you can compare the two easily. This one stands alone on the corner facing Barnes and Noble while the other is in the plaza next to a trendy acupuncture spa - so if you need drive through come here. The service was fast. Coffee tastes just like every other Starbucks I've been too (good quality control). Breakfast sandwiches were tasty. We sat outside to get fresh air and their patio was actually very relaxing with the city going by over the hedges.
google avatar

Julianne D.

Yelp
This has to be the slowest Starbucks I've been to. Not only was it in the evening that we came to this one, but we waited in the drive thru line for over 15 minutes. Upon entering the drive thru line, there were maybe 4 or 5 cars ahead of us, which isn't much.
google avatar

London S.

Yelp
I just had the worst experience at this specific Starbucks. (1) it took over 30min just for me to get one white chocolate mocha iced, Venti (2) when I pulled up to the window they had me wait another 10min. As I was waiting, I watched the employees and noticed they weren't wearing gloves. They were being super unsanitary and touching everything. As we all know covid19 is not over and this Starbucks really grossed me out. The boy at the window, Vincent, shrugged his shoulders at me when I asked him, why they weren't wearing gloves and why they weren't being more cautious and sanitary. I'm so disappointed in Starbucks, especially this location because it's on a main road in Houston. I do not recommend going to this location at all. It was disgusting and super time consuming.
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
Overall not a bad Starbucks experience but some of the slowest service I've had. It seems that they give preference to drive thru orders, so that may be the way to go at this location. Other than that the baristas seemed friendly enough, though I wish they would have asked if I wanted to use my reward drink before it expires. Guess I'll just have to go get another drink, though I'll probably go to a different location.

Stacy B.

Yelp
Came in here after Cheer comp with my son. Standing at the counter a woman came to me with garbage in her hand, sat it down and took my order. We ordered a grande mocha Frappuccino, venti iced green tea latte and a chocolate croissant. She put the croissant in the oven and continued to take out her gar age. PS it's only 5:30 at this point. Not closing time. My iced green tea latte came out and then they handed me a hot mocha. I said "we ordered a grande mocha frappe" and the person behind the counter let out a huge sigh and rolled their eyes at me. As if it was my fault garbage lady didn't take my order correctly. Next, the blonde person threw my croissant across the counter at me. I can overlook garbage lady but the blonde person was pretty rude. This is not normal Starbucks protocol.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
Good everything. I liked the music playing and my venti blonde was good. WiFi worked great. Totally zero to complain about. Great place to hang out!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
I have been to Starbucks the order I always get is so tasty and the employees are so nice and friendly so I should suggest to go to this place
google avatar

E W.

Yelp
This Starbucks is in the Barnes and Nobles on Westgray in the River Oaks shopping center. Barista are nice and it has the most extensive food/pastry menu if all the Starbucks I have been in.

Yelp
This property needs to be reported to the health department. I went to use the restroom. Restroom 1 was gross, so i went to restroom 2. there was no toilet paper, no soap in the dispenser, no ventilation for the bathroom. It was bad enough for a customer but it made me wonder how a person who works there washes their hands and what they carry out of the bathroom when they serve coffee. I sure hope they get their act together.
