It's not everyday i get to Brooklyn Heights though I know the neighborhood well. It's that little pocket of gorgeous that Manhattanites will just never be able to appreciate.
In my case, what brought me here at 8:30am on a Friday morning had to be something urgent. And it was. For you see I've been struggling post iphone for some months, trying to find the phone that really works for me and suddenly it dawned on me that I need to go back to the sidekick, my last pleasant smartphone memory of recent years.
Once this epiphany had befallen me, it was only a few craigslist searches before I tracked down the object of my desires. Could I get one for cheap and sign a 2 year contract, yes? But after being out of contract for a few months the freedom feels so good, it's like losing weight!
So upon one search, too expensive, another search too far, finally I found someone who was closer afield. So we agreed on a price, and set Friday morning to meet on Montague street, as the phone's current owner lived here.
I arrived early to scope out the place, check for hidden cameras, look out for shady characters, and check the exits. LOL. I did arrive a bit early though, and sat down to dig into Ismael Reed with a cup of Starbucks.
Starbucks is nothing but consistent, I will give them that. I won't order espresso here, but the roasts aren't bad, so a cup of black coffee can go over well. I sat drinking mine and amping up for the morning, and enjoying the local BK Heights scene. Older crowd, lot of families, baby strollers, and professionals. A few freelancers and commuters in and out. You can quickly get the vibe of a neighborhood just by sitting for a little while, and watching people come in and out. It's no hipster central, but enjoyable for a change of pace.
Shortly thereafter my secret package arrived, and complete with sim card, charger and in perfect condition too. No shady dealing, no goons on the lookout. Nine Jackson's later, and I am walking out the door with my new baby.
