The Best Walking Tours of New York City (Updated 2025)

"I especially enjoyed the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour offered by Take Walks; it was a highlight of my explorations and provided meaningful historical context about both landmarks." - Matthew Kepnes

I recommend making a reservation in advance so you can visit the Pedestal Access or, if possible, the Crown. There are many different cruises, but it seems that you must purchase the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Ferry ticket in order to actually get off on the islands. I highly recommend going onto the island. There is a restaurant there and plenty of space to walk around.

This was completely spoilt for us by the hoards of people that descend on you as you exit the Metro station. We just wanted a quiet walk to have a look but were harangued continually by people trying to sell us boat trips. When we did get to the observation point it was a stunning sight however and next to a really nice little park.

Due to construction and maybe restricted access due to DHS/etc. there is actually no "lookout" that I could find on my visit in January 2026. There was a tall green construction fence all along the section of the shore that I remember walking by before so you had to stand back on a bench to even see the statue above it. :-( ---- A blocked view/access to the statue of liberty -- if that's not a metaphor for our times, then I don't know what is.

Really enjoyed it, but be prepared to be there for a few hours. Next time we are going to try and go in the early morning or evening. Do not buy tickets from the people who are "selling" them on the street, those are scammed. Get them from the designated place. It was absolutely gorgeous, so glad I got to experience going.

If you want to visit the Statue of Liberty, this is my recommendation: Once you arrive at The Battery Park New York. On your Google maps, search for this location: *Statue City Cruises Battery Park* This is the official site to buy your tickets and visit the Statue of Liberty. ***Be careful and don't fall for illegal ticket scams.*** I say this because when you arrive at The Battery Park you will find many people dressed in red vests, purple shirts, etc. who pretend to be "official sellers" but they are NOT. They will try everything to convince you to buy from them, but DON'T DO IT. Just walk to the place I told you about and there you will find the official tickets for $25.50 US. Once you have purchased the tickets, you have to walk about 5 minutes to where you will board the ferry. To be honest, it's a unique experience. You can get off on the island and see the museum that shows how the statue was built, and buy souvenirs that you won't find anywhere else.

The Statue of Liberty is an iconic landmark and a must-see in New York City. Visiting the island and seeing the statue up close is an unforgettable experience. The views of the skyline from the ferry are amazing, and the history behind the monument makes it even more meaningful. A true symbol of freedom and a highlight.

The Statue of Liberty lookout offers breathtaking views! Whether you're at the pedestal or crown level, the experience is totally worth it. Looking out over the New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline is unforgettable. The climb is a bit narrow and steep (especially to the crown), but manageable if you're reasonably fit. Advance tickets are a must — they sell out fast, so plan ahead. Everything was well organized, and the weather on the day we visited made it even more special. Great photo opportunities and a deep sense of history — don’t miss it!

Beautiful view. Lots of steps. If you want to go to the top. It's extra price and tickets must be purchased in advance. Months of a waiting list too.
