The Statue of Medea, standing prominently in Batumi’s Europe Square, is a striking symbol of Georgia’s deep historical and mythological roots. This elegant monument, unveiled in 2007, pays homage to Medea, the legendary Colchian princess from Greek mythology, known for her role in the tale of Jason and the Argonauts. The statue depicts Medea holding the Golden Fleece high above her head, symbolizing the wealth and cultural significance of ancient Colchis, the region now known as western Georgia. Crafted with impressive detail, the monument seamlessly blends mythological grandeur with modern artistry. It not only commemorates Medea’s connection to Georgian heritage but also celebrates the region's historical ties to the ancient world. Surrounded by the charming architecture and vibrant atmosphere of Europe Square, the statue is an essential landmark in Batumi. It serves as a focal point for both locals and tourists, providing a perfect backdrop for photos and a spot to reflect on the city’s rich cultural narrative. At night, the statue is illuminated, enhancing its majestic presence and adding to the magical ambiance of the square. Whether you’re a mythology enthusiast or a casual traveler, the Statue of Medea is a must-see attraction that encapsulates the timeless spirit of Batumi.

Impressive statue and you will have great views from it over Tbilisi. There are stalls around from snacks, drinks and souveneirs. Take the cablecar down into the old city. It offers great views.

The legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece is still alive and well in Batumi. Medea towers high above Europe Square on her immense pedestal. She stoically shows the gilded sheepskin that Jason and his Argonauts managed to steal from King Aietes of Colchis after completing three dangerous assignments.
