Staunton, Virginia, Travel Guide

"A lively Saturday-morning market (typically April through October) located in the Wharf parking lot in historic downtown, featuring vendors selling fresh bread, local cheeses, doughnuts, fruit and other regional produce and prepared goods. It’s a community hub where visitors can sample local flavors and shop seasonal products." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. Wow, this was a nice market with an impressive variety of vendors! I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of foods offered. Since it was early fall when I went, there wasn't as much produce available as there would be in the summer, but what I saw looked freshly picked. Parking can be a bit challenging, especially if you can't walk well, since there is limited parking in the downtown area. All in all, I enjoyed going and plan to return next year.

Had a great time here on Saturday. We bought a nice loaf of spelt bread from Grain Story. The flavor of the whole grains is amazing and goes great with just a smear of butter! We also liked the empanadas and pastries from Magdalena's and the coffee from Happ. Last but not least, we picked up some chestnuts from a local farmer and are really looking forward to roasting them in the oven soon!

I loved it! I visit them quite often but I've never been there early enough to check out their farmer's market. I had stayed the night over so I decided to check it out. I'm very glad I did because there were numerous vendors with a variety of produce baked goods and a lot of other things. People are very friendly in the prices were extremely reasonable. Found quite a few yummy options!

We had a wonderful fall (mid-Oct) visit to the farmer's market. The number of vendors may be down, but the quality was great. Fresh eggs, unusual produce, pumpkins and gourds, local cheese, herbs and spices, a variety of meats, some game, lots of pastries including fantastic gluten free! And a hand puppetier. Loved our time there.

What a fantastic farmers market! So many great local farms and businesses to support. I always find great produce, yummy soup, and I look forward to the apple cider donuts!

Google
I visited the Staunton Farmers' Market a few weeks back and was delighted with the amount of options available for things to purchase/do. Each vender that I visited was amiable and polite even when I didn't buy their product. I especially enjoyed the large selection of plants/flowers to choose from! This is a very well run farmers' market and if you're in town, you should definitely stop by on Saturday morning!

It was just an ok experience... Nothing special... I can't understand why everyone gets so excited about a place that only opens a few hours one day a week.. I visit the Philippines regularly and the open air farmers markets there open at 5am to mid afternoon...7 days a week and you can buy anything from Very Fresh fish and meats to produce... live animals (chickens, sheep and lambs and anything else from Soup to Nuts .. So this place was not very exciting to me ..

Google
One of those local prize venues easily overlooked until you go. Well worth it! You'll find excellent local grown and/or prepared foods as well as various food trucks that swap out each time time last but not least, several craft/makers sellers. If you haven't made time to go, make time.

Yelp
Easy parking, nice variety, friendly folks. Special shout out for Grain Story Bakery's cake, shortbread, and pretzels made from locally grown and ground flour. After the market we started lunch with dessert: Grain Story cake paired with Sugar Cube cantaloupe (also from the farmers market) and Keto vanilla bean ice cream. Yummy!

Yelp
Bombay Chai serves the most perfect Chai. It is subtle, aromatic and and pleasing. The caffeine content is not too strong, and the sweetness is just enough. They are obviously doing something right, as Bahrat told me that they often sell twelve gallons on a Saturday. His wife Shashma prepares a lovely Poha. I watched her carefully squeezing lemon juice over the "potato rice" with seasoned peanuts, tomatoes, cilantro, coconut and pomegranate seeds. As I dug into it I even found itty bitty mildly hot peppers, and what I think were tiny tender lime leaves. On a quick glance this appears to be simple Indian street food which it is, but once you sit down and savor the complexity of flavors you realize that no, it is perfect Indian food brimming with authenticity.

Yelp
This is a great farmers market! Everything you would want and expect! Locally grown, locally made, local people. Located in the downtown area there's lots of parking across the street in the municipal parking garage. Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable about their products. We purchased some garlic lamb sausage that we took home and made lunch with. It was fantastic! we definitely will be going back to see what else is available!

Yelp
I'm admittedly partisan, but I'm sorry to see Neal's review of our farmers' market. I visit this market (open Weds & Sat) at least once a week. Saturday morning is the prime time, and it just gets bigger and better as the season advances. As of early May there are a couple dozen vendors with lots of green stuff, baked goods, honey, artisan soaps and candles, potted plants, some hydroponic veggies, and plenty of eggs, meat and cheese. By midsummer there will be produce of every kind. These are farmers and artisans within a 20 or 30 mile radius, and some of them have been coming to the market for many years. Live music many Saturdays: there was bluegrass two weeks ago, and a 1930s-style jazz combo (with singer) this morning. Come get coffee and a scone, or a bottle of wine and some kielbasas - or (new this year) Salvadoran pupusas made fresh to order. Lots of kids and dogs, friendly folks, and the parking is easy. This market is a boon to Staunton and will reward visitors from elsewhere.

Yelp
I love the farmer's market. Saturday isn't the same without a Joe's Homemade Brat and some honey sticks.
