Stawamus Chief is one of those hikes that tests you and rewards you at the same time. You climb through quiet forest, over roots and rocks, and then suddenly you’re standing above the whole world — Howe Sound, mountains, sky, everything wide open. The effort feels small compared to the view waiting at the top.

Hail to the Chief! 🪶🏔️🏞️ This hike has to be one of the best in all of Canada — challenging, breathtaking, and absolutely worth every step. I went up to the Second Peak, my favorite of the three, and I’m pretty sure it’s also the highest. The route is about 5.5 km round trip with roughly 650 m of elevation gain, and it took just over two hours at a steady pace. Don’t underestimate it — this trail is basically the ultimate natural stair master. If you’re out of shape, your legs are going to be toast for a few days afterward. The climb is steep and relentless, winding through forest, rocks, and roots before breaking out into some of the most incredible views you’ll ever see. The top section gets a bit spicy — chains, ladders, and a few sketchy moments where you’ll need both hands. It’s thrilling but definitely not for the faint of heart, and dogs won’t make it past this part. Once you pull yourself up onto the summit, though, it all pays off. The 360° view over Howe Sound and the surrounding peaks is simply unreal — one of those moments that makes you forget how much your legs are shaking. Bring lots of water, a snack or lunch, and take your time up there. There’s plenty of space for a picnic, and every direction is a postcard. Just watch your footing on the way down — tired legs make for easy missteps. A must-do hike. Hail to the Chief

Did the Chief First Peak today and it was an incredible experience. The views from the top are absolutely stunning … definitely worth the climb. The trail is well marked and well maintained throughout. Be cautious if it’s rained recently or raining during your hike, the granite rock near the summit can become very slippery. Near the top, there’s a short section with chains and a metal ladder, it’s a bit exposed, so if you’re highly scared of heights, it might make you nervous. I personally don’t like exposure, but I felt okay going up. Coming down was much harder for me. I took it slow and stayed very cautious, especially on the steep granite sections. Definitely a good workout and a rewarding summit, but not something I’d repeat often due to the descent. Parking lot was free and so many empty spaces at 8 am.

I really enjoyed this hike! It’s a very popular spot — I went in early May, and there were already enough people that I had to wait in line at some points, especially near the chains. The chain sections and the narrow canyon are definitely the highlight of this hike. There are lots of stairs, a beautiful river running alongside the trail, several waterfalls, and, of course, incredible views both from the slopes and the top of the cliffs. I highly recommend it — it was a truly pleasant and rewarding hike!

An epic experience being able to hike peaks 3,2,1 descending order. The full hike can be a challenge (giant stairmaster to begin!) but it’s a great adventure for those looking for it! Views up top are incredible with the highest and most serene at peak 3. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Squamish!

Followed all the reviews that said to do 3,2,1. Enjoyed this route. Majority of the trail to peak 3 we were the only ones. Keep an eye out for yellow & orange markers they will lead you. If you can’t find those then just look for the beaten path. Getting up peak 3 was steep but worth it. Everyone says peak 2 is the best view but honestly I disagree and think peak 3 was the best. The trail from peak 3 to 2 was nice but at one point the markers just stopped. Just start walking up and you’ll get to the peak. We skipped peak 1. The way down after peak 2 was intense with ladders and chains. Follow the markers the trail is well marked. My knees were killing me on the way down but if we did 1,2,3 my knees would be dead. Definitely recommend 3,2,1 to save your legs.

Experience was from a couple years ago, can't believe I never posted! What a challenging hike to the top. And it started raining too so we were just sliding all over the place to try and stay upright. What a unique experience, the top views were worth it, even if it was a bit foggy!
