I have given Stayokay many years of preference, staying in different locations across the Netherlands. Amsterdam and Utrecht always treated me and other guests with respect and care — which is why I kept choosing this company again and again. But my experience in Maastricht has been a nightmare.
In the past month I stayed here three times (3–4 nights each), and each time I felt unwelcome and rejected when asking for help. A few staff members are genuinely kind, but the overall culture here is to impose rules and structure on guests rather than to make them feel welcome and comfortable — which is the very heart of hospitality.
The last stay was the worst. On a Sunday night, when I could not pay €28 by card, I offered cash and explained I could pay first thing in the morning. Despite my long history as a loyal guest, they refused, threatened to call the police, and put me on the street at night. No trust, no care, no solutions.
Other issues show the same attitude: the shower drain was broken for 3 days, spilling water onto the floor; the dorm rooms were so cold that all of us on the top bunks had to sleep in clothes under blankets; and when we asked at reception, we were told in an inhuman way that “nothing can be done.”
Overall: no respect for loyal guests, no humanity, no real service. Just rigid policies that serve the hostel, not the people staying there. If they can treat a long-term, loyal guest this way over something so small, imagine how little they care about anyone else. Choose another place where people are valued.
