"One of the last things you might expect to find in this mountain town is an authentic Thai street food noodle shop, but surprises come frequently in Great Barrington. Chef Phornphimon Ezinga brings influences from her traditional home cooking in Thailand to the newly expanded kitchen of Steam, and infuses it with a modern take-out-friendly approach. The pork buns are a squishy delight, the summer rolls capture the season year-round, and the ramen is soul-warming."

My husband son and I stopped in on a cold evening and got three yummy ramen bowls, dumplings and steamed buns🍜🥟We all could not get enough of this very authentic bone broth with fresh veggies, ginger, thinly sliced beef, chicken and noodles. We had a very happy ending with delicious mango panna cotta desserts with a beautiful chocolate tuille. Such a gorgeous cozy place! Great drinks as well, highly recommend the Thai tea, my favorite!! Thank you Jem and Shane for feeding us yumminess all these years😋🍜🙏🥰

Google
I chose to give this place the benefit of the doubt. The menu was cheap, the app (gyoza) was just like biting into fresh mushy ginger, whether you like it or not. And I ordered the ramen but to my surprise, I had maruchan noodles, with a slice of yesterday’s pork shoulder, in an oily broth that made my mouth feel gross. I couldn’t understand the theme, Asian food, but Latin restaurant vibes? I left after one bite of the main course, out of principle. I have a feeling they knew I was disappointed and still (over)paid full price. I’m from the south and will say my opinion on the tight spacing is biased, but overall I guess the people were nice? Just not nice enough to excuse the food. PS. I was grateful they forgot the other appetizer. I was there with family and we all lost our appetite after eating here.

Google
first time here and we enjoyed it very much. we ordered summer spring rolls which is raw veggies wrapped in rice paper with peanut sauce, bimimbap with beef, pork loin ramen and Thai iced tea. it was all delicious. place is small but cozy.

We took our (hangry and Autistic) son there for his 9th birthday at his request. I was back within less than a week for more! They were incredibly accommodating and did so much to help my son feel good while we were there. The owner came to chat with us towards the end of our meal, and sealed the deal in terms of making us feel welcome, even with the birthday boy sometimes being loud with his grunts and growls at moments of frustration. Food was incredible, truly. Service was as good as the food. You definitely want to go here

Google
This place is legit. I got the Pho and it was bomb. I live in Westfield and it's better than any Pho I've had in the Pioneer Valley. I also got Khao Soi Gai to go and that was also bomb. Both were authentic boasting rich, full flavor. The meat in each soup is high quality. The broth though.... it's all about the broth. The place has a great vibe/aesthetic. Low lighting, clean, chill low key music playing. The staff was great. Friendly and down to earth. I chatted them up about local restaurants and they were able to give me some good recommendations for food and spots to catch live music.

Came for Father's Day with my daughter. Very busy but service was fast and friendly anyway. Had a great meal and will come again. Great vegan options too!

Google
Top notch tom yum noodle soup and pho. We drove in from Northampton cause we’re tired of the restaurants here. Steam was excellent. We also had the summer rolls and they were the best we’ve had outside of New York or Boston. The service was fantastic and we have leftovers for dinner too! We will be back! Thanks so much for your delicious menu and dishes!

Google
I've been wanting to go to a noodle bar for the longest time, and I finally was able to stop by steam noodle Cafe in Great Barrington. The atmosphere was pretty nice. A little Cozier, then I'm used to hearing everybody's conversations, including mine. The wait staff were very attentive and fast. Our food came out within 15 minutes. I ordered the summer roll, which was phenomenal. I also ordered a beef broth Noodle Bowl. that's not the proper name, but it was pretty good for my first time. No complaints.

Yelp
Delicious and beautiful. Good for vegetarians and vegans too. This is my favorite restaurant in Great Barrington.

Yelp
The food is a solid 3.5 stars, but not outstanding. The service and ambiance are excellent, however. We ordered the buns. I found the buns doughy and without flavor. The pork bun had nice spicing, but the chicken and mushroom one had none. I had the simple shrimp skewers with mango salad. The shrimp was overcooked and dry, while the mango salad was so spicy that it overpowered all other flavors. My wife's pad thai had tofu at tasted reheated. We put it to the side. Just not thrilled with it.

Yelp
Really good good, very reasonable prices. A great place to grab lunch in downtown GB.

Yelp
Had the chicken ramen. Most flavorless ramen ever. The chicken was poached pale and still managed to be dry, the veg was barely cooked if it all -- I tried to get some hot sauce to at least add some flavor and they had closed on us, so we ate the bland ramen. Never going back.

Shelley K.

Yelp
The food was terrible. Chive cake was cooked in old oil just out of the freezer and tasteless. The sauce served with the dish also tasteless despite a few floating scallions. The Gyoza Dumplings see above. We also ordered Jem's Bánh Xèo with chicken. Some fresh carrots and scallions. Sauce might have been water. Yikes. Presentation try and make up for the terrible food, doesn't work. We ate here last year and it was solid good. Not sure what happened. The waiter was pleasant however that did not make up for the food. Go to Big Y or Guidos and buy these items frozen and cook yourself or go to Hudson for good Vietnamese food. Will not return.

Yelp
I like to feel like I'm pretty well versed in ramen. I've been to many noodle restaurants. This was probably the worst. We ordered the vegetable dumplings as an appetizer. They came out all stuck together by design I'm assuming which was weird. In order to get that look they also only fried them on one side so the rest of the wonton wrappers were pale and gummy. The inside was edible but just barely. There was so much raw ginger and green onion inside of them . Our meals came out fairly quickly. I ordered a bowl of kimchi ramen. First off it looked very nice. Three pieces of pork. Hard boiled egg. Bok choy. It had a large amount of alfalfa sprouts on top which was kind of the first red flag. Bean sprouts are traditional and actually add something to the noodles. Alfalfa sprouts are just flavorless grass. I mixed it up and noticed the large amount of raw red onion in the broth also the amount of noodles was a bit less than expected. You could also see the large amount of sesame oil on the top of the broth. I tried the broth first it was bland yet overpowering with the sesame oil. Sesame oil should only be used in small amounts and honestly had no reason to be in the ramen to begin with. The noodles were bad. Overcooked and gummy. There was maybe like 5 small pieces of kimchi floating around in the broth which were honestly the best thing in there. The rest was all raw red onion. So much red onion that an hour later I was still popping mentos to get the taste out of my mouth. I'm not from Great Barrington so I'm not sure if there are other noodle places around but skip this one for sure. The food was bland and made more for pretty Instagram photos than anything.

Yelp
Decent food we could find in the area. Service was good. The buns were soft and delicious. Tom Yum noodle soup was satisfying for a cold winter day. The mango salad and spicy tonkatsu ramen were alright - we would not order again. Their matcha latte with boba was refreshing.

Yelp
We've been watching a lot of movies while on vacation with Asian cuisine heavily featured. So naturally we were like we need Ramen. So we turned to Yelp for help. It was crazy though there is not much where we are staying in NY. We found we had to go 30 minutes out of state or 30 minutes in state. So we chose steam and just prayed it was what we were looking for. I have good news. It is EXACTLY what we were looking for. I started with he peanut tofu. This is one of my favorite dishes at Penang in Chinatown. Crazily enough I think the dish at steam was better. Perfect crisps of tofu that you dip in the sauce rather than the Penang way where it's used as a glaze. She got veggie curry puffs that were delicious. Then I got a Bah mi with chicken. Normally I do tofu. In fact I've never done chicken before. This was really good. Not sure if it's just never having had chicken before.... I don't think so. It wasn't spicy like the ones you get in philly that have jalapeños on them. We both got Thai teas which were perfect. The restaurant was cute inside and I liked the set up. Nice light jazz led to post Malone. I can do that. My musical taste has a wide range. The town looked like it had a younger crowd. However everyone still disappears at dark.

Yelp
Worst service experience I've ever had. It took so long for someone to bring us menus that we almost left. Then another 15 minutes for water. Then 15 minutes to put in food order. My ramen was cold when it arrived and then after sitting there with empty water glasses the entire meal, our server finally made an appearance, threw the ipad in my face and said "$39". No smile, no apology for the awful service or anything. It was so insanely rude. Seemed very understaffed.

Yelp
Cute cafe with a smaller, curated menu. I was surprised to see Khao Soi as an option and was excited to give it a try. We also ordered curry veggie puffs. The pastry on the veggie puffs was delicious but the inside was sub par. It tasted more like chicken pot pie with a hint of curry. The soup was served luke warm and didn't offer a ton of flavor. No one checked in on our table and when it was time to pay, the interaction we had with their employee was awkward and cold. In addition, be prepared to pay a minimum of 20% for tip while your server stands there watching you. The tip options presented on their pay tablet start at 20% which is totally off putting considering their service wasn't worth 20% of our bill. I really wanted to like this place but ultimately left disappointed.

Yelp
On a quick trip to Great Barrington my girlfriends and I decided to stop in for lunch. The place was moderately busy for a Monday afternoon, service was great and the food was yummy. We sat toward the back at a table for four, most of the front was smaller tables. The place isn't huge but it is comfortable. The lunch portion was satisfying and had good flavor.

Thomas A.

Yelp
Hard to know where to start. It's food coming out of a kitchen that clearly doesn't know how to put ingredients together. Utterly flavorless across the board. Ramen had raw red onion in it, undercooked noodles and overcooked chicken. How do you UNDERcook noodles in a broth? And raw red onion in a Thai dish? C'mon guys. Overpowered any flavor it otherwise should have had. Our other plate was the pad Thai, hard to mess that up, right? Chicken clearly cut from a rotisserie, seasoned with Italian herbs. So sitting in hot noodles cooked it twice, making it as dry as hell. Can't say a single positive comment about this place. I'd strongly avoid.

Yelp
I went here for dinner a few days ago for the first time. It is a hidden, new gem in Great Barrington. It's a small space, but they do have a bar. The food was SO delicious and the staff was so friendly. They offer a variety of drinks including boba. Everything was so delicious! I highly recommend if you love noodles and boba!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely cannot recommend this place enough. I love Vietnamese food but had never had bánh xèo before. I'm vegan and so options can be limited; ordering vegan often means getting an item sans main ingredients. Not so at Steam! They had vegan options for most things on the menu and they were clearly made with the intention of tasting good, not just serving as alternatives for a few picky eaters. Every ingredient in this item was insanely good, especially the tofu, which was flavored and cooked to perfection. The fried onions on top... the crepe... everything was so good and super fresh. The service was also fast and friendly. I am so bummed there's no quality vegan equivalent here in nyc (that I've found!). I'm so excited to come back here again the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Very nice people and good food. We very often and it's always fresh and delicious . Right in the center of town.

Henry L.

Yelp
I love this place! Such a nice cozy interior. Ordered the miso soup (they were happy to add soft-boiled egg which made it even better). Soup was delicious but needed some spice. Asked if they had hot sauce and the owner(?) got me three different options to choose between (sriracha, togarashi powder, and chili crisp), along with providing detailed explanations of each of them. It's clear he has real passion and love for his food and Asian cuisine. Best Asian food and atmosphere in Great Barrington and probably beyond.

Abhijit G.

Yelp
The food was a very solid 4 and then some. Bahn xeo was awesome, so was the the Bahn mi. The ramen I've had better and the pork bun was a slight disappointment. To me what stood out the most was how nice everyone in the business was. We went back again and again for various stuff and they complied with our requests with a smile every time when other businesses in the area might have batted an eyelid (and did so) for some of the things. Some in my group plan to go back for seconds before they head home to Boston.

Yelp
Middle to large selection of appetizers and entrees, especially noodles. Good for a relaxed but relatively quick bite on the main drag in Great Barrington.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Gyoza Pie and Thai soups! Nice ambiance also. Great location, within just a few minute walk to the Triplex Cinema for an after dinner movie!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was awful. Appearance of restaurant was charming and servers were very friendly but the food was terrible. A chicken spring roll contained a piece of slimy deli meat that passed for the kitchen as chicken. The rest of the roll contained whatever they had on hand - and not in a good way. The ramen broth - from two soups tried - tasted as flavorful as hot water. Absolutely no flavor. There were no redeeming quality about the ramen bowls. The steamed buns were also pretty bad. What a shame for a cute space in a great town.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the greatest, healthiest and most friendly restaurant in all of Great Barrington. We had the most wonderful lunch there this past Saturday and it was worth every minute, and every penny. The menus is large enough to excite, but we both had specials, a crispy duck dish that was about the best I've ever had, and she had a shrimp dish that was just plain great.
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
For those looking for authentic noodle or Korean-inspired dishes, this is your place. Based on where we live, would be 5+ stars for food. I'll picture the bibimbap bowl I recently had. As good, or better, than American owned hotel cuisine in Korea. Minus 1 star for the service. Minus 1 star for pricing. All in all, will be back. But, in a less authentic way, order less - as each plate is essentially $15. To share and pass is traditional, but May not be achievable here.
google avatar

Angie C.

Yelp
Very friendly service. Great ambiance. Plenty of vegan options. The waitress modified my iced Thai tea to be vegan with oat milk 10/10. The ramen was an 8.5. (Not pictured).
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
Fresh but very bland. Inexplicable. Possibly the worst pad Thai ever. Weird spring rolls- huge and bland, but very fresh and healthy.
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
Recommended pan Asian. BUT the dish I ordered was unavailable. Big drag. So it was chicken pad Thai. Pretty good but nothing amazing. Next time , Gyoza Pie.

Yelp
By far one of the best tai I've ever had! This was a great find. I wish we lived closer!

Yelp
Steam noodle cafe has been our go-to when coming to the Berkshires for several years now. In fact, we loved the Khao Soi Gai so much we'd always order one to go to take back home before we leave. We were super excited this time to go back, but something was really off, maybe there's a new chef?? The Khao Soi Gai use to be very flavorful, in a thick curry, with delicious pickles, but what we got when we ordered Khao Soi Gai today tasted really watered down... the curry was also not the same consistency we were use to, the color was much lighter... really felt like they made the dish, and then poured a cup of water in the bowl to fill up more volume. It was really disappointing as we had been looking forward to the noodles and as silly and it may be, a highlight of any great barrington trips. We really hope this is just an odd day in the kitchen and not the norm now. We really enjoyed going there the years before.
google avatar

Yvonne A.

Yelp
Disappointing taste, nice presentation though. Broth was ok. Good flavor but not exactly what I would call tonkotsu, they do say it is a lighter version on the menu though. The noodles were still stuck together at the bottom and tasted not cooked all the way through. The meat was horrible, thick slabs of pork that were fatty and pink in places, I couldn't eat it. Egg was done well and I did enjoy the sprouts, though not traditional. Veggie curry puff was really bland and could have used way more seasoning. If I'm in the area again, would try another dish but so far not impressed. For reference, I'm from SoCal so it's very possible my ramen standards are in the "snob" range. Take with a grain of salt.

Yelp
I could almost move to Great Barrington for the food from Steam. In this smallish town I would never expected such tasty Asian food. This place isn't a sit down restaurant. You take the food either to go, or you can eat at some outdoor tables which are shared by 4-5 restaurants in the same building. We had a big group so we ordered basically one of everything and shared it all. They package it all nicely with the dry noodles separate from the soups and broths so the noodles don't get too soggy. My personal favorite dishes that I would almost move for: the Thai Pho, the spicy beef soup, and the Tom Yum soup. Their steamed buns are really good too - the bbq pork wasn't too sweet like most ones I've had. The egg one is good too. I wouldn't order the mushroom one again.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my meal here and will definitely come back when I get the craving! This last time I got the Shrimp Pad Thai special with the Gyoza pie. The ingredients were fresh, the service was very attentive and friendly, and the menu items were at a great price point. This is a great winter spot for anyone who is in the Berkshires looking for a warm, hearty meal. Its a bit of a tight squeeze in the restaurant but it's not distractingly small and they have the tables arranged in way that everything flows rather smoothly.

Yelp
Yesterday was our first experience here. We were looking for Ramen and this was the closest place. Our waiter was super fun and helpful when we confided that we were not very good with chopsticks. He did not cutlery shame us and was happy to bring us forks. We both ordered a soup and an order of dumplings, both which were fantastic! Neither of us were fans of the summer rolls, but that was our first experience with rice paper. Overall, we had a nice experience here. It's a small comfortable space and our personable and friendly waiter definitely made the experience a pleasant one. We will probably go back if we find ourselves in Great Barrington again.
google avatar

Yelp
For ages just couldn't resist the Banh mi -- just the right blend of flavors and good portion control. Branched out to Tom Yum with chicken, which will be my go-to for a long time! The aroma is just the beginning of the taste treat in a bowl. Only regret is that the Tom Yum portion is too generous and it isn't a doggy bag kind of dish. So maybe I'll share next time. Or not!

noah c.

Yelp
The food slayed. I ordered Tonkatsu ramen the portion was great and the ramen was amazing. Waitstaff was helpful and friendly. It smells amazing when you walk in and the restaurant was very cozy feeling.

Yelp
Another fantastic take out dinner from Steam, Thank you! ;-). Tonight, we tried the chive cake, very tasty, and curry puffs, crisp and nice, and pad thai specials, nicely prepared ! Thank you Team Jem. Thomas & Frances, Great Barrington.

Yelp
It was a hard battle between a 4 and a 5 star. They have potential but I'm not sure they're there yet. The banh xeo (a crispy and savory vietnamnese crepe) was amazing. The sauce seeps into the crepe and creates a flavor bomb. The protein is plentiful and the veggies are fresh. The khao soi was lacking; there just wasnt enough spice (not spicy spice, but flavor spice). The day I came, they were out of a lot of things because a storm had hit the day before. That might have played into some of the disappointment, disorganization in staff, and the long wait times (2 hrs!?). But... Overall, I'd say - give this place a shot. Its an Asian fusion that sets itself unique enough and had a lot of potential.

Danielle I.

Yelp
They were ok. We got word to try it out here, and so we did. We were there at an off hour, so maybe that's why it took a while for the food to get out. We waited about 30 mins. No joke. There were only three of us. The Curry Puff - The crust is excellent. The inside, watery and not so flavorful. We got the vegetable one. Would I order this again. Maybe not. The Beef Noodle Salad - It was really dry. The beef was tough. And it needed some kind of dressing -- maybe some Nuoc Cham? There was a bit os salad on the side, but no basil, which I think might have rounded out this dish more. They served it with slice of lime. I had to ask for more lime so I could dress the salad. The Miso Ramen - The broth wasn't so impressive. Lacked a bit of flavor and fat, imho. The egg was over-cooked (waxy yolk). The noodles were a bit over-cooked. The tofu was ok. The Tonkotsu Ramen - This had less flavor than the miso ramen. This is not tonktsu broth at all. Not sure I'd order this again. All in all, it was ok. Not bad, but not great either.

Yelp
I hesitate to write this review because this fabulous restaurant is small and if it gets too crowded I won't get in, but if you are anywhere within striking distance of this restaurant, go! We had the Khao Soi Gai (Northern Thai Chicken Curry) soup - so flavorful we couldn't stop eating it, fresh spring rolls and "Gyoza Pie" made of the best gently fried dumplings we ever tasted. All the food was perfectly seasoned, fresh and really delicious. The staff couldn't be nicer or more gracious. The restaurant is spotless and well run. It's open from noon to 8 pm, Thursday through Monday. We have decided to have lunch there at least once a week.

Yelp
Steam Noodle Cafe was quite disappointing. I was really excited about the spot after seeing the rave reviews and also being able to try their Khao Soi. We specifically went out of our way to go to Great Barrington. We ordered at the restaurant, which they do advise against but upon calling their number I was directed to a machine that didn't give the option to speak to anyone. The wait for our food was 45 minutes but ended up being more than an hour. The food itself was decent but didn't really capture the flavors of the dishes. The dishes were a little bland and lacking the spice and flavor profile that really makes these dishes stand out. It was also off putting that the people who were taking orders were preparing food without wearing gloves and touching the herbs for example. As this is a minority opinion, if you do try Steam Noodle you must order ahead. I wouldn't recommend appreciate that they are offering a variety of Asian cuisines in this area.

Yelp
I can't believe the negative reviews! we absolutely love Steam and order takeout weekly. healthy, light and flavorful with so many options that are delicious. goes to show that some people just can't be satisfied. Steam is a gem!

Yelp
Staying in town with family and grand parents. Traveling from NYC. Review is based on comparison of local noodle shop versus NYC noodle shops. Order was also 20 minutes to closing so not sure if quality is lowered. Gyoza pie wasn't great. Half of the gyoza bottoms were burnt so not worth consuming. The good ones lacked much flavor and filing. The spicy beef soup noodles had flavor but the beef was not a great cut. Was more chewy than sliced thin for a noodle soup. We did request not spicy as it was for grandparents and they did assist on that. Tonkotsu wasn't flavored right. Very wrong pork flavor soup but not as full creamy flavor as traditional tonkotsu. The pork included was more of like a spiral ham cut and did not fit the flavor. The miso ramen didn't have more flavor. Tasted like an out of the carton type miso flavor. Ramen noodles were veery doughy and tasted like heavy flour texture. Not a thin ramen like consistency. The Tom yum with chicken was not great. Flavor was OK but very spicy. Noodles weren't great and the chicken was very tough. Tofu summer roll was OK. Peanuts tasted weird but overall not much to complain about on this dish. Overall, quality is not comparable if you've had good ramen and noodles from nyc or in respective country origins. It was late and wanted something simple for grandparents but quality was lacking.

Yelp
5 stars for this easy to pass by local gem. A few seats inside scattered around the counter or 2 tables out back facing the movies( putting up a small wooden fence might be charming and would block the carnage bins across) Take my recommendation and order a Banh Xeo, an interesting folded taco-crepe creation that was superb. Just get one. Pork and chicken buns were way too doughy and I would not order again. Banh Mi was great as well. This is a really solid little place that could easily grow into a small but ritzier spot, perhaps the old Baba Louie's right next door. Go

Elaina L.

Yelp
Absolutely awful service. Restaurant was not half full. The wait staff took our order and proceed to serve everyone around us we'll after we ordered. We asked the clueless staff to check and then 40 minutes later they brought out a plate of edamame. Do not recommend

Yelp
Slightly confusing: there are two locations of this place almost right next to each other: one little takeout window inside of a shopping arcade and one small sit-down restaurant about halfway down the block. We went to the takeout window first and then were kindly redirected to the sit-down spot, which is very bright and pleasant inside. Food was overall tasty, though uneven. The tonkatsu ramen was a nice surprise, with broth that was clearly made from actual slow-cooked pork bones and not a commercial soup base. My husband and I ended up kind of competing over who got to eat more of this. The Kao soi with duck came with a very generous amount of delicious crispy duck on top, but the flavor of the soup itself was blander than I'd like. We also got a couple of baozi, which were perfectly fine -- I'd say they were the frozen kind, but good quality. Everything was presented very prettily. If I lived nearby I'd definitely come back again for the ramen and to try some of the other menu items.

Nice people but terrible service. Expensive and food was pretty bad. I hate to be negative but eat elsewhere!

Yelp
I'm so glad I found this place on Yelp on a commute through Great Barrington. It was a great little spot. Not good for big groups to sit down, more of a counter, bar stool eating style. Luckily the table was available and we got to sit down and relax with yummy noodle bowls! Food was great and we chatted for awhile with the possible owner? She was very sweet!

Yelp
I LOVE this place! I just wish it was closer than an an hour and a half away. The food is so tasty and authentic. The staff is helpful and friendly. They have a great selection of vegetarian options.

Yelp
I have never once had a good meal from Steam. Constantly lowering the bar for all of us in our expectations of Ramen. One might think that after several years in business that they might have an idea of how to make decent food. But alas, they do not. -30/10 not a slay.

Yelp
Disappointed w/ the food preparation. Summer rolls were so clumsy, too big, and vegetables (red pepper, carrots, and cucumber) were cut up in large sticks. I'm not sure what the sauce was supposed to taste like, but it was quite watery. Summer rolls are usually served with peanut sauce. We also ordered two different types of noodles; the broth was one-note and should have had more depth of flavor. Grease doesn't equal flavor.. Overall, food preparation, ingredients are not very authentic. Service was friendly but inconsistent with the waiter not paying attention to what we ordered and brought us 2 order of summer rolls instead of cancelling the first then bringing only the one that we ordered..
Pattern of hills and trees around lake
