I was visiting a friend out in Denver, and she wanted to get away from the city, so we decided to go to Steamboat. We'd been there together twice before and had stayed in one of the cheaper hotels. But she was talking about how she the Steamboat Grand was being built while she was living in Steamboat, that she'd always wanted to go there, but that, during ski season, it was way too expensive. Since this was mud season, the prices weren't too bad, so I said we should try it since she'd always wanted to. I think we paid about $180 (plus parking, which always bothers me, as they obviously have a parking lot!), but the sign on the door of the room said that it goes for $900! Of course, those prices are never right, but the audacity to even suggest a rather plain room should go for that much is ridiculous!
I loved the little fountains in the lobby as we walked in. There was also a young man who greeted us and who was very eager to help us, although we didn't actually need any help. The young woman at the concierge desk was helpful as well.
Our room overlooked the pool and hot tubs -- a lovely sight! We left to go to dinner and then came back just in time to enjoy them for a bit. They are illuminated with blue, green and purple lights. One hot tub says it's for adults only, and with good reason -- it's VERY hot. The other hot tub is for everybody, and it was much more comfortable. The pool itself was a bit cold and there were lots of kids in it, but it was nice as well.
According to the policy, they close the pool area at 8:30, so we felt we had to rush to get back from dinner. We actually stayed about 45 minutes, and it wasn't until after we got back to our room that we noticed that they didn't start making people leave until about 9:30-9:45.
We were quite surprised to see that they charge for late checkout -- and it was a lot! Fortunately, we had things we wanted to do in town, so we didn't really need to check out late, but I have NEVER seen a charge for that anywhere I've ever stayed.
I am glad that we stayed there so we could satisfy my friend's curiosity, but as a hotel, it's rather overpriced (even for mud season) for what it is and what you get.
