"Give us a little background on this place.Located on a wine farm in the Constantia valley, this small, low-key hotel is in meticulously restored Cape Dutch heritage buildings that date back to the late 17th century. It lies halfway between the southern Cape Peninsula’s natural attractions and the city itself. Steenberg’s prized vineyards and rugged mountains (Steenberg translates to ‘stone mountain’) form a backdrop to the hotel, as well as a winery, 18-hole championship golf course and private residences. Who else is staying here?Families with young children, mature couples with golf bags in tow, honeymooners. Tell us more about your room. The 21 rooms and three villa-sized suites are spread out in immaculate gardens. All have been redecorated and renovated, and feature timber floors, modern fabrics and a clever curation of furnishings by South African designers. While no two rooms look exactly alike, there’s a fresh, contemporary theme and plenty of natural materials and contrasting textures, from linen to leather. How about the little things, like the mini-bar or shower goodies? Any of that find its way into your suitcase? There's free Wi-Fi; fresh flowers from the garden, locally made organic Africology bathroom amenities, a complimentary minibar stocked with everything from fresh milk to a bottle of Steenberg sauvignon blanc. What's to eat? Worth it?Steenberg estate has two excellent restaurants, both overseen by chef Kerry Kilpin (ex the Food Barn and La Colombe). Hotel breakfasts are served in the brand-new Tryn, the hotel’s restaurant named after the feisty original owner of the farm, Catherina Ras, who apparently outlived four of her five husbands. The intrepid owner’s gutsy yet feminine spirit is conveyed through bold colors—burnt orange, mustard, ruby and jade - and finishes in solid wood, stone and copper. It’s also open for lunch and dinner. At the winery is Bistro Sixteen82, which is very popular with Capetonians. Pre-or post-wine tasting, decadent breakfast options and delicious meal-in-one salads, gourmet burgers, tapas plates and daily specials hit the spot along with the estate’s excellent wines, many available by the glass. Anything stand out about other services and features? The hotel has a secluded swimming pool and revamped pool lounge with special new facilities for early check-in/late-stay guests an added bonus. The three villa-like heritage suites have oodles of space and their own private pools. There is a spa with four treatment rooms for excellent QMS facials and Africology body treatments. Book spa treatments in advance if possible, as many of the estate’s residents are regulars. Steenberg’s award-winning wines—notably the Sauvignon Blanc, sparkling wines and Nebbiolo—are available to taste at the modern wine tasting centre attached to the winery. Bottom line: is this hotel worth it, and why?Cape Town’s city center is within easy driving distance, plus you have access to the whole Steenberg private estate lifestyle—includes easy access to golf, wine tasting, a choice of restaurants, nature trails and biking routes. Guests here have easy access to the surrounding mountains for more adventurous biking and hiking, as well as the Constantia wine route and the southern Cape Peninsula’s scenic drives and pristine beaches." - Jane Broughton

"This gem of a small hotel, housed in restored Cape Dutch heritage buildings, dates back to the late 17th-century. Steenberg is the oldest original wine farm in Constantia. Furthermore, it was the first farm in the Cape granted to a woman, Catherina Ras. From the entrance, a road winds up between prized vineyards against a rugged mountain backdrop (Steenberg translates to "stone mountain")." - Jane Broughton

"Most wine estates boast about their age, but Steenberg actually is the oldest registered farm in the Cape. With a modern winery, a restaurant (Bistro 1682), and an edgy tasting bar and lounge, this is a multi-sensory space with earthy hues and textures, a sleek contemporary design, and cheeky details (including chandelier made from 2,800 individually hand-blown glass grapes). Fynbos gardens and flowing water form an appropriate backdrop to al fresco tastings on the shady terrace." - Jane Broughton

This hotel welcomed us with open arms!!! From the minute we arrived they were very friendly and helpful, check in was so easy a quick. We pre booked dofferent experiences and ended up changing all the times but they did this very easily and still we managed to do everything we wanted to. The resturant staff were super friendly and it was so nice being able to just walk across to eat at night times. It's a very quiet hotel with beautiful surroundings and the rooms are second to none.

We flew into Capetown as friends on Steenberg was the first of our itinerary. Let me start off by saying it set the bar so high for the remainder of the week we were in Capetown. We had a birthday we were celebrating and everything and I mean everything was top notch stuff. The staff were so happy and helpful, the food was exquisite and of course the nectar of the Gods was worthy of any King's court. Thank you so much for making the Zambian bunch feel at home. I managed to squeeze in a massage at the Spa. Its unfortunate the course was closed because I was hoping to experience the highly rated Golf Course.

I wondered whether I should even share my experience, because the hotel is so unique and truly excellent hotels like this have become so rare.|We first visited Steenberg Farm in 2019 and immediately fell in love with the hotel. With each stay, our time there kept getting longer, and this year marked our fifth visit. To our surprise, our loyalty was rewarded with a massive upgrade.|We feel very save at the hotel, and the highly personal attention from the Steenberg crew has created a strong sense of connection. Staying at the Steenberg Hotel now feels like visiting friends, which makes saying goodbye each time more difficult.|The hotel features two excellent and highly recommended restaurants. As part of the service, guests are offered complimentary transportation to and from restaurants within a 5-kilometer radius. As golf enthusiasts, we also appreciate that the Steenberg Golf Course is within walking distance. The course offers a great driving range, and EOGA provides golf lessons with outstanding golfpros.

The grounds are amazing and the rooms are clean and very comfortable. Food at Tryst is excellent. Staff is friendly and efficient.|On the downside: The spa is inconceivably expensive. Friends we were with, out from Dubai, said these prices made Dubai look positively cheap! We also couldn't access the golf course without more admin than we were prepared to commit to. I've never stayed at a golf course linked hotel where hotel guests couldn't automatically play the course. And finally, it's a 5 star hotel - one evening after dinner (circa 11pm) we wanted a night cap with our friends in the hotel lounge, but were told that the bar was already closed!
