We just returned from 2 weeks in Europe. Our last stay was at the Steigenberger Hotel, Vienna for three nights. I will never stay at one of these brands again and here is why; When my wife and I checked in we were offered a 'special deal' on breakfast of 44 Euro for our stay of 3 days. At the reception counter, my wife and I discussed if we would want this with the check in guy (young man, 20 something?) and weighed the fact that we wouldn't be using it Saturday morning since we had to catch an early plane and the breakfast didn't open until 7am (about the time we needed to be in a cab). So we would only be using it Thursday and Friday if at all, but he chimed in and said, well it's 44 Euro (about $50 dollars for 2 people) for the whole stay! So we said, oh ok - that's actually not a bad deal and we agreed to pay the 44 Euro. He literally stood there while I counted the days on my fingers and we discussed how we wouldn't really need it Saturday but might be nice to have Thurs/Fri. He knew the schedule. He offered it 'for the whole stay' - exact words. Well, when we just checked out, the bill showed 44 Euro PER DAY! Since it was 7am (and remember the breakfast opens at 7am) and we had to catch a plane, we didn't even have more than 2 or 3 minute to grab a piece of fruit and get a cab. I asked the young man about this and he said that we agreed to 44 per DAY and he would not take this off the bill - no apologies for the apparent misunderstanding and no consolation on the fact that we didn't even eat this morning. 44 EURO for 2 pieces of fruit!!?? He took our luggage at 6:58AM while we ran over and grabbed a piece of fruit and came back after reading the whole bill and to get a cab. This is a classic bait and switch! Offer a special deal to a customer and then claim it was our fault for not understanding. SCAM. I was floored. What kind of customer service are these people taught? Ill, tell you - they are obviously taught to lie, cheat and steal at every turn. We left Vienna with a sour taste in our mouths. I called Visa at the airport and they agreed to dispute the ridiculous charge within minutes.
So Steigenberger Hotel, you not only are getting 1 star on every review site on the internet for your shady practises but you aren't even going to get to keep the 88 EURO that you tried to steal from us. Was it worth it?
Here is how a normal hotel would have handled this. "We're so sorry for the misunderstanding. Please accept our apologies and we will remove 88 EURO from the bill.... Or at VERY least, remove the 44 EURO from today, the day we barely had minutes to eat and told you this at check in! What a joke... no apologies, no action... Guess that is what you get when you employ a bunch of untrained 20 year olds.
