"Sternen Grill has got, what meat lovers crave for: the best bratwurst in Zürich. The sausage comes with the „Gold Bürli“, a super crispy bread roll from the famous Gold Bakery. Beware of the strong mustard, though: a little goes a long way! "Zurich's Best Sausages Locals all agree this is the home of Zurich’s—perhaps Europe’s—best sausage. What they’re divided on is which is better, the St. Galler bratwurst or the Servelat—both superbly juicy, flavorful, and with excellent snap—and divine with a crusty bürli roll and super spicy mustard. After a two-year renovation (during which the grill operated out of an airstream trailer nearby), the original 1963 location reopened its doors in 2013 with roomier, more modern digs."

A true gem in Zurich - it’s got my golden seal of approval! You owe it to yourself to check it out. Don’t be scared off by the long line at the entrance – the service is so fast that in just 5 minutes, you’ll already be ordering. No joke, this might just be some of the best sausages I’ve ever eaten. We tried both the veal and pork options, and they were both an absolute delight. The bread is magical. It’s super crunchy on the outside and might seem a bit hard at first, but the inside is soft and plays a key role in your overall experience at this restaurant. Watch out for the mustard! It seems like it’s a bit of a local legend. We were warned by our guide that it could be quite spicy, and she wasn’t kidding. You might feel your life flash before your eyes when you try it. It’s definitely not for everyone, but you simply can’t leave without giving it a shot. If I ever return to Zurich, this spot will undoubtedly be one of my first stops.

Nice place in Zurich, close the center... I was there few times and always food was delicious.. I prefer picante sausage if you like hot food... Chicken is also good... When you come home late they are open until midnight... Price correct for expensive Zurich... People who work there is so kind... All recommendations for eat something

Google
Their specialty is sausages. When I tried them, I loved them. The only problem was that the bread was EXTREMELY hard (inedible), and the sauce was too spicy. It's traditional food there, but I would never return to this restaurant, and it's very expensive.

Google
Superb, amazing currywurst! The sausage itself was perfect - from flavour to texture - probably the best I’ve eaten in Switzerland so far. By itself, the seasoning was very savoury, and it is further complemented with a very rich curry which made the dish very complete. The mustard is amazing - it feels more potent than other mustard I’ve tried elsewhere. The bread is a little tough on the outside but it a great pairing with the sausage / curry. In all honesty, i think the portion was a little small, but I find the balance and overall meal very worth it. There is a queue given how popular the shop is, but it moves very quickly.

Google
It's another restaurant that people say is hard to catch because you need to queue. Actually, the queue is about 10 people long with approximately a 10-minute wait - not very long because the queue moves quickly. After eating, I was quite indifferent - nothing impressive. It's just ordinary sausage, not bad. I ordered three pieces for about 30 CHF. The restaurant is located on the main street and not difficult to find. If you're asking whether it's worth visiting, it's not really necessary - it's like any other regular sausage.

Google
Currywurst or bratwurst, that nice piece of bread, potato salad and a beer. I been there twice in the 3 days I was in Zurich. There's a long lineup outside because of the popularity of this place but the food is worth it. Currywurst and bread, solid 8/10, only because for 8 francs I was expecting a bigger sausage, potato salad is a 6 for me, a bit too vinegary. BUT MAN THAT MUSTARD IS A SOLID 15/10 hot damn. Guys, please, as owners of the restaurant, can you please tell me what mustard you use because for the past 4 years, I've been trying hopelessly to find that instant burning sensation from the mustard I've eaten at your place. Every single Dijon/artisanal/ "extra spicy" mustard that I can find just doesn't have that close-to-wasabi kick. I really love that mustard and would be nice to know where I can find some. Much love from Canada🙏🍁

Google
Awesome food in Zurich, one of the more affordable places. But the food is high quality! There's a reason there's always a long queue at lunch time no matter the weather or day of the week. A must visit

Yasin Yilmaz

Google
I generally search restaurants before I go somewhere. I saw here and decided to visit. Unfortunately I am disappointed. Bread is very regular bread, meat is average meat. There is no special sauce or something. Place is tiny and you can’t find table to sit. I ordered and get very quickly. I eat on street like regular take away restaurant. I am sorry but it was very bad experience for me. Thank you

Yelp
We LOVED the Sternen Grill which has excellent fresh food, friendly waitstaff and fair prices. We loved trying the various wursts and as I don't eat much meat, I really enjoyed the green salad with felafel and herbed yogurt sauce. Avoid the ubiquitous takeout line and eat upstairs on the terrace! Fun atmosphere up there. We made it a point to eat here twice on our trip to Zurich. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Food 4.0/5.0 Service 3.0/5.0 Value 3.5/5.0 Decor 3.0/5.0 Overall 4.0/5.0 Pretty cool chain mostly for sausages and a beer. Decent amount of seating including in the separate room in the back.

Yelp
Service was quick. The order line moves fast and the food is handed to you and you sit or stand outside to eat. They were out of quite a bit of things by the time we got there so we didn't get to try much. I got the spicy sausage and I was a fan. There were a ton of people dressed from casual to business attire grabbing a quick bite. It is along the street so kind of busy.
google avatar

Conrad L.

Yelp
Menu 1 (pictured) was a exactly what I needed after 5 1/2 hours of nonstop sightseeing in the Old City. Food is ready quickly for takeaway and this combo was delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent place to stop for a bratwurst and some onion sauce. Rosti was tasty & well done., how I like it. The beer went down fast. The service was very good and attentive. We sat on a balcony overlooking the street, facing the lake, which made for a nice backdrop. Not too noisy. Good food at a good price
google avatar

Yelp
Best sausage in Switzerland!!! Go to the upstairs restaurant and enjoy the view to the river and relaxed atmosphere. Great local beers (2) on tap. Self serve water. English menu via QR was helpful. Service was great.

Yelp
Great place for a quick casual bite to eat. We had eaten here a n previous visits and enjoyed it and still do. There is always a line and it goes quickly. The place is full of energy with locals and tourists elbow to elbow. This visit was special...still May so the had the white asparagus!!!! Although we ordered too much it was still very reasonable for Zurich prices. We ordered the white asparagus with hollandaise sauce and the St Gallen Brat with a golden Bürli roll. Along with the hot mustard we ordered the curry wurst sauce and the brown gravy with onions. We dipped and dipped and couldn't finish the excellent sauces. I even added some of the curry sauce to the hollandaise sauce....awesome. The brat was cooked perfectly and I might add huge. We could have gotten out of there for about $29 Ch but no, we had to add the asparagus and the extra sauces....glad most time we are there when those white beauties are not in season! Highly recommend. Upbeat place across from the lake. Service was outstanding.

Yelp
Food was good--nice food introduction to Switzerland. Good food and service, clean, well managed . . . And expensive. Casual dinner for two, no alcohol or desert--over $75!!! But that's the norm. Americans: for everything assume double your price expectations for food, lodging, events, etc.

Yelp
Our longtime Zurich friends had time to give us a quick tour of the city and this was one of the main attractions. They didn't seem to have enough superlatives to describe the experience and now we understand why. Strangely enough, we managed to arrive at a time when the line was minimal. The St. Galler bratwurst looks ridiculously hearty but is relatively subtle in character and a nice counterpoint to the massive chunk of crusty bread accompanying each one. While you can eat indoors, the tables are very tiny; just big enough for the tiny tray of sausages and bread. But once you bite into that delicious sausage, you won't care about anything else!
google avatar

Claire K.

Yelp
This place is a must go! It has the best bratwurst I've ever tasted! We had the traditional with a roll and also tried the bratwurst with sauerkraut and onions which was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend and the line goes super fast, they're very efficient! Enjoy!

Yelp
I've been coming here for the last ~10yrs during family trips and no trip has been complete without a stop (or two) at Sternen Grill. The line can be long but it moves quickly, and service is efficient. To help the line move faster, they now provide an online menu w/ QR code for customers to review before they get to the counter. If you're overwhelmed by numerous options, I suggest sticking with the classic St. Galler Bratwurst (Cervelat) which is a white sausage (veal) that isn't readily available in the US. It's well balanced, tender, and grilling gives the exterior a nice crispy texture. Don't forget to grab your own bread roll + mustard which is next to the register. Even if you don't THINK you'll eat much of the bread, DON'T LEAVE IT BEHIND as its crust is amazingly delicious. My standard order: "MENU SET 1" = St. Galler Bratwurst + Potato salad. Add a beer or soda AND add a couple jars of their famous spicy mustard to bring back home for yourself or as gifts. Plenty of seating or tables to stand by; weather permitting, enjoy your lunch lakeside.

Yelp
Our friend who lives in Zurich brought us to this restaurant because he claimed they had the best bratwurst and I would have to agree. We tried quite a few other places throughout Switzerland and this was the winner! They have outside seating as a bonus and we couldn't have been happier.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Perhaps the most reasonably priced meal I've had in Zurich. You could easily fill up on a sausage costing under 10 CHF with the crusty bread roll and sinus clearing mustard. But at this price point, live a little and get two sausages and maybe a beer! St. Galler Bratwurst: The classic. A huge bratwurst that is browned crisp on the outside and tender white on the inside. Perfect texture contrast and not dried out at all. Spezial Servelat: Thick like the bratwurst, but a nice reddish pink color and quite smoky. A really great combination with the bratwurst since they each have quite different textures and flavoring. This one's texture is a bit meatier while the bratwurst is smoother. Currywurst: Essentially the bratwurst, but cut into large slices and floating in a bowl of curry. This one goes especially nice with that crusty bread, which can absorb the sauce that's made with a lot of interesting spices. Wiediker Schweinsbratwurst: Pork based. Thinner, longer and with a snappier texture than the bratwurst. The most hot dog like of the sausages I tried, so I can see why they offer this as a sandwich (which I didn't get). Still fun to eat by hand and dipping in that spicy mustard.

Yelp
Always a great place to stop for a snack or meal while in Zurich! Though there is typically a line, it definitely moves fast and might as well grab a cold one while you wait.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
When we travel, we rarely go to the same place more than once. After all, there are so many new dishes to try and never enough time on a single trip. Well, we went here twice. Yes. They are GOOD. It's not only the quality sausage, quality crusty bread, and tasty beer...it's just a fun atmosphere to get your food, chill out, and people watch. It's situated at a busy intersection, so you get to see a lot of bustling activity from tourists and locals. You're in good company with others who just want to have a leisurely lunch and enjoy life.
google avatar

Rena W.

Yelp
Food was good nothing exceptional. Everything is a La carte. No table service. Friendly staff. Good location. Cheaper than most in Zurich but still Pricey. I think you'll find better elsewhere even if paying a lot more. A popular staple of the area.
google avatar

Gabriel S.

Yelp
Had a St Galler bratwurst. It was decent (apparently servalat is hard/coarse). You get the bread & mustard yourself. The mustard is pretty strong so don't put too much in your mouth at first!

Amy H.

Yelp
Excellent German sausages and beer in a relaxed small town atmosphere. Nothing fancy - order at the counter at reasonable prices and find a seat inside or outside sometimes sharing a table with tourists or locals.

Chris B.

Yelp
Barbecue with an attitude, in a European frame of mind. Wonderful place, fun staff. Prices? Ugh... high from my perspective, but that's the nature of the beast.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
A casual spot for some fast, quality Bratwurst. After getting our food at the counter, we sat outside as the sun was going down to enjoy. I especially loved the potato salad and the curry bratwurst, which had a sweet sauce that was great for dipping our bread in.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
Bratwurst is really good, nearby the lake, the shop is over 60 years, atmosphere is really chill, must try in Zurich
google avatar

Ruslan A.

Yelp
Friendly service, delicious food, nice atmosphere, sidewalk seating with street views available, great for people watching.
google avatar

Georgia A.

Yelp
Here you can taste traditional Swiss cuisine while admiring history. We came here twice during our trip to Zurich and all the food was great, but I would recommend ordering from the last page where all the most ordered items are listed along with pictures of the food. Their sausages are also really delicious.
google avatar

Doug W.

Yelp
If you sit upstairs, you won't have to wait in line! Excellent team like staff atmosphere, everyone willing to help us. Great food, I highly recommend their mustard. Good cold beer and fair prices. I would go back!
google avatar

Oh K.

Yelp
Fantastic sausages and bratwurst! Goes really well with the beers. Super long line outside but service is fast so the line moves swiftly too. Lots of tables, quick turnover.

Sarah J.

Yelp
We ate a fast lunch here at the take away counter. I had the schnitzel sandwich, which I really enjoyed. It comes with a little slaw and a sauce on a baguette, and it's truly delicious. My friend had one of the sausages they're famous for, but she didn't love it, probably because it was veal and not pork. This is a great choice for a fast lunch.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
pretty good bratwurst, always busy, but you can grab and go and eat beside the lake. The mustard is pretty good. My local friend mentioned this is the best bratwurst in the city
google avatar

Jason X.

Yelp
Long line but it moves fast since pretty much everyone is just getting a sausage, bread, and a beer. Simple meal but it's a popular local spot for a reason: the sausages were tasty, the bread had a tough exterior but complemented the sausages well, but the spicy mustard was the real star - it packs quite a kick and does the horseradish/wasabi thing where it flushes your sinuses. You can buy a small jar of the mustard on your way out!
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
I don't really see what the fuss is about. I suppose it's a cheap meal in a very un-cheap city. First you stand in line. When you get to the counter, you tell the person on your left what sausage you want and they grab it off the grill and put it on a plate for you. Then the person on your right rings it up. Sausages range from CHF 7 to CHF 8.50. Next to the cashier, you grab your own bread and mustard. I got the Salsiccia Piccante, the St. Galler Bratwurt and the Spezial Servelat. They were all okay -- the spezial was probably my favorite -- but nothing to write home about. The bread looks amazing, but tastes dry and stale. The mustard has a super strong horseradish flavor. I felt like I was eating Passover maror.
google avatar

Yag P.

Yelp
Legit sausage place. Bread and sausages were on point. Salads were miserable excuses for salad. Mustard most delicious. Not pricey. Would return. It's near the lake.

Yelp
Amazing place! Great sausage options and the mustard was delicious with a convenient location right in the center of town. Would recommend!

Yelp
I love sausages. Long, eight inchers. Thick and plump that burst with juicy, fatty goodness when you snap their natural casing. Blistered sausages, that have burst open from cooking. Heaven! For fast take away of incredible meat in a tube, it doesn't get better than Sternen Grill in Zurich. A small chain, this, the Bellevue location by the Lake has a sit down restaurant. The 30+ person line out the door and crowds around every standing space to eat tells the tale. Tip: If there is no place to stand, go across the street and eat on the risers by the lake. Open consumption of alcohol is allowed. Just don't feed the swans, it's illegal. It doesn't get much simpler or better than this. 1. Choose a sausage: St. Gallenr Bratwurst (7.50CHF) - The national sausage of Switzerland cooked the way they love it, blistered, crisp and bursting open. Delicious veal with excellent seasoning, and a hint of that unique Swiss mountain herbs. Juicy and fatty. Good eats. Spezial Servelat (7.00CHF) - A Zurich specialty made of beef and pork, lightly smoked, loosely flavored like a kielbasa (meaning no disrespect with the elementary comparison). Thinner, longer, with a richer and bolder taste. Currywurst (9.00CHF) - A German classic, essentially the excellent St. Gallen bratwurst seasoned with curry spices that help bring out the sweetness of the veal. 2. Grab a container of very hot mustard (used on the bread NOT on the sausage). 3. Grab a chewy, crusty, roll. Its sourdough flavor works with the mustard to make a super satisfying meal. 4. Devour. Note: the sausage is served alone wrapped in paper, not in a bun. It's better that way. Trust. Friendly counter service. German with very little English spoken. Just point. Sorry no pics. Sausage, roll and mustard in one hand, beer in another... I NEVER eat at the same restaurant while traveling to a new destination. I made an exception three times for this.

Yelp
Great food. Clean bathrooms for guests. Excellent English. Fast service. Go for it!!!!!!!
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
I am only giving Sternen Grill five stars because I cannot give them six! This is fast fresh food! You sit wherever you want and a waitress will take your drink order. You go to the counter and order your food. They are constantly cooking because they are busy with locals!
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
My picture shows the food menu, drink menu, St. Galler Bratwurst (comes with baguette) and mustard horseradish sauce. (Careful with the sauce! The horseradish taste is very potent!) Overall this place is awesome. Worth the stop in both in taste and in price - we actually came back for a second time. Don't get discouraged by any long looking lines as they move very fast. In addition, this restaurant is open on Sundays. The first time that we came in we got the currywurst and Schweinszwicker (no picture, sorry). The currywurst comes in a cup with curry sauce and you grab a baguette. It was good and different but I don't think I would get it again - the curry is quite sweet and has sort of a pumpkiny taste to it. I think it's really popular here though! The Schweinszwicker is really tasty and large. It comes with sauerkraut and onion in a baguette. The beers on tap are ok, just your standard beer. The beers in the fridge are just ok as well. I really enjoyed the rose and would recommend. The Cabernet Sauvignon was very well bodied and oaky.
google avatar

Shelley D.

Yelp
Zurich is an expensive city, but Sternen Grill is not expensive at all. I had the currywurst and my husband had a sausage. Both come with a free piece of bread. My husband also grabbed a beer and this was one of our cheapest meals in Zurich. It's fast, easy, and you can use their downstairs restroom.
google avatar

Phoenix H.

Yelp
The menu is simple but it's done very well. This is a great spot to have a bratwurst and some beer! It's also an affordable dining option since dining in Switzerland can be pricey. It's not fancy by any means but it is surely satisfying! The mustard has a kick to it but it is a must with your grilled wurst. While we ate here, we noticed a line form so it does tend to get busy.
google avatar

Kristofer E.

Yelp
Good sausages. The schweinszwicker is better than the bratwurst as it is tastier. The roll that comes on the side is actually out of this world. Lunch * Bratwurst (Good) * Schweinszwicker (Great) * Curry bratwurst (Ok) * Fries (Good)

julia p.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! Long queue but line moves quickly. We ordered the first three wursts on the menu. The st galls was mild, the stezial bold and smoky, and the wiedeker on a baguette with sauerkraut, and a poulet as we have a big kiddo. The female cashier was super nice and reminded us to grab a roll and mustard. We had everything precariously balanced on one plate but that was ok. Everything was tasty . Yes, the toll is very crusty but a very yummy crumb and perfect to support the bread and mustard. The poulet was not big but not dry and well seasoned. Lots of people ordering the chicken nuggets and frites. Lots of tables outside. Clean bathrooms in the lower level. We took the water taxi from the central station for 4.40 chf and got off at the Bellvue stop. Loves the water views! Worth going and trying!

Yelp
A relative took me here some years ago and it was my first time to taste some Zurich kinda cakes and bread, Believe me, it was yummy yummy and am still creating out some good times to visit again on vacation
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
Terrific meal, and finally - great food at reasonable prices in Zurich! Everything is bare bones. Jump in line, order, and pick up your roll and spicy mustard. Once you've got your food find a table. People stand at the table tops or crowd together (get comfortable and don't be surprised if a stranger asks to at your table when it's crowded!). Staff was really helpful. Food was fast, tasty, and flavorful. Sauerkraut with crunchy onions was delicious. Highly, highly recommended.
google avatar

Tucker J.

Yelp
Came by on a whim during a school week in Zürich, when no meal was planned for us at lunch. I got the curry wurst, which was heaven in a bowl. It's not spicy, but just right.
google avatar

Molly D.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Zurich. The bratwurst has the perfect amount of spices and is made to perfection. Comes with delicious brot and the mustard is amazing. This is our must have in Zurich!
google avatar

Isaac S.

Yelp
By far the best bratwurst in Zürich. It is extremely close to where I work so I find myself eating there very often. The food is on the higher end of pricing in Zürich but nothing outrageous. #1 takeaway in Zürich and the restaurant upstairs is also great.

Yelp
Great food, great price (least expensive meal I've had in Zurich) and really filling. Went during lunch when line was long but went very fast. Test the mustard before you go all in with it, can clear sinuses but good.

Montel A.

Yelp
A must try especially for visitors to Zurich. Nice to sit in...better to take away and walk to the lake
google avatar

Yelp
So amazing, the best of German street food. Note that they are in a temp location for a while and the listed address is wrong by a half block--they are off Bellevue. I had the special brat with spicy mustard, a crusty roll, and a house beer. The sausage is grilled perfectly and has fantastic flavor on its own. The spicy yellow mustard is pretty hot, and I loved it. The roll is is a miracle, hard and flaky on the outside, soft and yeasty inside. I wish I knew how to make bread like this. House beer was fine, a lager I'd say. Interesting flavor, it was a good match for the meal. Tables fill up at prime meal times, maybe visit off peak. Located next to the lake and tons of shopping. Open very late!

Yelp
Unexpectedly divine. Old friend brought us here on our first time in Zurich for lunch, evidently they're famous for it. We dined inside and I was seated at the head of the table which must be a place of honor, because it was on a cushioned loveseat with pillows, comfy. Menu had plenty top dishes to choose from and wait staff was right on top of our order. Now being honest, the food doesn't look good. It looks like cafeteria food. IT IS A ROUSE! It was incredibly flavorful, every dish. Chicken , sausage, veal spinach; it didn't matter, they seasoned the hell outta that food. Karen had NO parts in this meal. So of course if the food is good, you can't ruin it with bad drinks. Best beer I've had in 2 years, no BS Old Style or St ides over here. This place was the real deal. Prices were on the higher side, but you get what you pay for and we got our money's worth. Wishing aid had another Das Wiezen to drink as we speak.
