I love sausages. Long, eight inchers. Thick and plump that burst with juicy, fatty goodness when you snap their natural casing. Blistered sausages, that have burst open from cooking. Heaven!
For fast take away of incredible meat in a tube, it doesn't get better than Sternen Grill in Zurich. A small chain, this, the Bellevue location by the Lake has a sit down restaurant. The 30+ person line out the door and crowds around every standing space to eat tells the tale.
Tip: If there is no place to stand, go across the street and eat on the risers by the lake. Open consumption of alcohol is allowed. Just don't feed the swans, it's illegal.
It doesn't get much simpler or better than this.
1. Choose a sausage:
St. Gallenr Bratwurst (7.50CHF) - The national sausage of Switzerland cooked the way they love it, blistered, crisp and bursting open. Delicious veal with excellent seasoning, and a hint of that unique Swiss mountain herbs. Juicy and fatty. Good eats.
Spezial Servelat (7.00CHF) - A Zurich specialty made of beef and pork, lightly smoked, loosely flavored like a kielbasa (meaning no disrespect with the elementary comparison). Thinner, longer, with a richer and bolder taste.
Currywurst (9.00CHF) - A German classic, essentially the excellent St. Gallen bratwurst seasoned with curry spices that help bring out the sweetness of the veal.
2. Grab a container of very hot mustard (used on the bread NOT on the sausage).
3. Grab a chewy, crusty, roll. Its sourdough flavor works with the mustard to make a super satisfying meal.
4. Devour.
Note: the sausage is served alone wrapped in paper, not in a bun. It's better that way. Trust.
Friendly counter service. German with very little English spoken. Just point.
Sorry no pics. Sausage, roll and mustard in one hand, beer in another...
I NEVER eat at the same restaurant while traveling to a new destination. I made an exception three times for this.
