Stevenson Johannesburg

It was a 10 out of 10 experience. Seeing Neo's artworks enlarged in that manner not only reminded me that representation matters. But as black people we normally see ourselves as small in picture frames and for the first time seeing black and white images of the past was definitely a celebration of South African blackness in the 80s and 90s.

Visited with my work team. We enjoyed the exhibition, especially the interactive part of it at the end where you got to win a few art books. Small gallery with a lot to offer. Nice use of space by the artists

In my opinion one of the best galleries in the area. Always have great shows, central location to the other galleries around so definitely think it must be added to your monthly gallery visits.

Intimate gallery space situated in an original suburban home, featuring curated exhibitions by contemporary artists.

We visted artist Ian Grose' exhibition featuring good portaits at Stevenson. Located in a converted family house, parking in the front yard was easy and available. The exhibition space walls and ceiling were white painted, well lighted and clean with the paintings properly displayed and hung. It was worth attending despite the pouring rain.

I've been to the Stevenson in Cape Town and now I've been to the one in Johannesburg as well. Both are great spaces in terms of design and atmosphere. I visited the Stevenson almost a month ago, there was an exhibition going on by a foreign artist. And as people(and artists in my case) we all have our own personal tastes when it comes to art so I could appreciate his work for what it was but it did not appeal to my tastes...this is why I have given a moderate rating.

A gallery that practices horizontalism and engages with artists beyond the limitations of traditional art forms. A gallery that also has spaces in JHB, CPT and Amsterdam. Open to public for visits and invitational shows. Contributes to international and local artistic appetites.
