Day Trips in Vancouver

"About a 20-minute drive from Vancouver, Steveston offers over a century of history as a fishing village. After a quick peek at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery museum, grab a beer at Britannia Brewing and join the crowds for fish and chips from Pajo’s on the wharf. Steveston also has lovely beaches for summertime fun in the sun." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Yelp
What a great place to explore and walk around! We had breakfast and lunch here because the food is so tasty (breakfast at Breakfast Table and lunch at Pajo's). The fish market on the dock is so unique and a unique experience where seafood is sold straight off the boats under tents. We also walked around the antique stores in town and that was fun too!

Yelp
Cool place with fresh seafood available for purchase. Prices were cheaper than the market. Otherwise there's different types of restaurants to dine.

Yelp
Despite what the horde of tourists here may imply (myself included), the wharf at Steveston is more than just an Instagram-friendly spot for snapping up pictures of boats and brackish brown water; it's also where you can score some of the freshest seafood around, right off the boats - particularly if you're a fan of spot prawns! Get there early enough, and the local fishermen set up pop-up shops right along the quay, slinging salmon, shramps and other sushi-grade sea creatures from the decks of their vessels. Further inland, or along the boardwalk in either direction, you'll find a compact conglomeration of souvenir shops, restaurants, pubs, ice cream parlors and snack shacks, some predatory (and opportunistic!) crows and seagulls, and the storyb(r)ook town of Steveston itself beyond. It may be showing a little wear and tear these days, but overall, this area has become my favorite part of the greater Vancouver metropolitan area; the sort of place where I could see myself retiring. I mean, who can argue with fresh seafood showing up daily at your doorstep?

Yelp
Walking the Wharf is welcome to the public but not for puppies. Short stroll to see up close fresh catch-of-the-day and buy some if you like. Nice viewpoint of the marina. Free ;)

Yelp
Steveston harbour is a very charming place to visit on a bright sunny day . There is a park nearby but just the harbour walk can be meditative. Views are stunning for pictures and social media stories. I got a professional photoshoot done as well so go for it. Small shops around the area are great to buy local fresh seafood but ignore the stink.

Yelp
Lot's of new housing developments slightly overbuilt maybe. Beautiful boardwalk. Still spanking new. Hurry before it becomes covered withbird poop. Nice day for a walk this Family Day Holiday. Hopefully when the shops are filled in, the place would be more exciting.

Yelp
Love it here! It's such a beautiful little harbor full of things to see and do. Little shops and restaurants everywhere with amazing views.

Yelp
Love this place!!!! Never gets old! As someone who frequents the area, I find myself consistently drawn to the allure of Steveston Fisherman's Wharf. With its lively waterfront ambiance, a myriad of shops, and the captivating sight of fishermen at work, it's a place I can never resist returning to. Enjoying the freshest seafood and taking in the maritime culture has become a cherished tradition. Each visit leaves me with a sense of nostalgia and a renewed appreciation for this charming spot. Without a doubt, Steveston Fisherman's Wharf will always hold a special place in my heart, making every return feel like a homecoming.

Yelp
Nice quaint pier for getting fresh seafood. Be sure to come early in the morning. Great place for taking friends from out of town. Parking is plentiful on the streets, but the spots do fill up. The boats sell plenty of stuff such as shrimp, crab, and salmon. Supposedly they can't sell stuff like clams or mussels because of regulations but I never paid attention. Vendors are definitely there to hustle and make a few bucks, so check around for pricing. Nothing outrageous, but something to keep in mind. The prices do drop towards the end of the day, as they try to clear out their daily catch.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice walkable wharf with free fish off of the boats at reasonable prices. Did not buy but saw sashimi grade ahi and salmon; prawns, shrimp, octopus, bean and uni
google avatar

Jboogie L.

Yelp
This was a nice find. They were mostly Asian fisherman. Affordable shrimp, fishes of different varieties. Perhaps cash only? I don't remember.
google avatar

Stan L.

Yelp
If you like buying your seafood direct from the fishermen, Steveston is your place. I will come here usually during May and June which is "Spot Prawn" season. Spot prawns bought here are live and jumping, and at about $20 per pound, they are cheaper than grocery stores by at least $5 a pound. Additionally, salmon, halibut, sole, albacore tuna, sea urchins and snapper are also available. But, availability depends on the time of year, and the type of fishing boats that are moored. You might be able to haggle to get a better price; being able to speak Vietnamese or Japanese might get you VIP pricing. But, of course, your mileage may vary. If you are not interested in purchasing seafood, the wharf still offers people a chance to wander, explore and take photos. Just don't be an imbecile who taunts the sea lions, otherwise you might get attacked by one.

Yelp
As a local, I love this place. Fond childhood memories of sunny days walking the short boardwalk on the way to the wharf to see all the daily catch from each fishing boat. There would be these gigantic fish - Chinnook king salmon and 100+ lbs halibut. Images of these ocean beasts fueled many of a youngsters' imagination! Fast forward a few decades. The boardwalk is built up with trendy restaurants and souvenirs shops. Must visit place would be Pajo's for fish and chips. The wharf is also modernized. The fisherman's catch also reflects an international sophisticated Vancouver. Try spotted prawns in May. How about sea urchins! Bought 7 for $20 and converted it to the freshest Uni Don. Steveston wharf is more than "just for tourists". It is fun for locals too!

Yelp
A short escape from No. 3 road. Ocean breeze and smell remind me to relax and to enjoy what we have today. Now restaurants and relaxed atmosphere, very nice to bring your family around and enjoy one fine afternoon.

Yelp
Locals and tourists alike will love this place. do yourself a favour and spend some time walking around here (and get a bite to eat - we didn't as we had come directly from dim sum and were stuffed, but heard they had the best fish/chips restaurant in town). When we were here back in April, plenty of cherry blossoms to be had. Such a lovely site to see! There are shops/restaurants here to amuse yourself and you can apparently buy fresh seafood here as well. Spot prawns seem to be the thing in late spring to buy here. It lends itself to a charming little village enclosed in a city. You feel as though you've been transported away to some European small village..lol. I really loved the vibe. Patios to enjoy the view, the fishing boats by the docks area, the cherry blossoms (depends on when you are visiting)

Yelp
Overall, a wonderful place to come and walk around. Lots of shops and vendors. I was told that this was the location of the famous but vicious sea lion kidnapping attempt of a little girl last year. So don't feed them!
google avatar

Jonelle T.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! The fam bam and I had a few hours to kill before dinner and trekked over here since it was a beautiful sunny afternoon. The village is super cute and littered with sit-down restaurants, fish & chip joints, and coffee shops. We strolled thru the area, but THE best part was all the fishing boats tied up to the dock. There's basically a floating seafood market down there with fresh caught prawns, sea urchins, and a wide variety of fish. One dude was literally selling whole tunas for $50! Wowza! If I lived in the area or had a place with a kitchen for the weekend, you better believe I would've left here with a few pounds of shrimp and some salmon.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I have something a bit different for you, than those other reviews. I'm reviewing the Wharf at night. Have you ever been when it's quiet and calm and you can hear the water lapping on the side of the hulls of the fishing boats during a quiet dark fall evening? Listen to the cling clang of the ropes and wires tapping on the long tall masts that tower over the boats and shoot up into the sky. Even if you come on a rainy night for a quiet romantic stroll, umbrella in one hand and your partner in the other. Listen to the sound of the rainy pitter patter as it taps a dance on the silvery moonlit ocean. It's quite a different experience altogether. Well worth the visit. Especially if you have a coffee too keep you warm. Do this after a nice dinner from one of the restaurants nearby. You'll enjoy it for sure. I did a little video that might help to illustrate this a bit better. https://youtu.be/IcH1gI4UQTA Hope you enjoy this as much as I do. It's such a nice little historic little town, day or night.

Yelp
went for leisurely walk the other night after dinner, and i just couldnt ignore the feeling of how lucky i am to be living so close to a historical institution. what better place to take a stroll than to walk down the streets of a charming fishing village called steveston. with breathtaking views of the water, mountains, wharf, quaint artisan shops that line the streets, checking out the movie sets/props of once upon a time tv series, to the locals and tourists alike, wow...i am lucky to be living here. and of course, lets not forget the infamous sea lion which trolls the harbour ...lol. truly, nothing compares to home. welcome everyone, to steveston bc! cheers and happy canada day!

Yelp
Beautiful spot - we arrived at around 5 after not having had lunch and discovered a fabulous selection of places to eat. My camera was hungry too and also got a good meal feasting on all the great sights on the wharf.
google avatar

Ashton M.

Yelp
The Fisherman's Wharf has an interesting and diverse number of seafood available for sale. I didn't buy anything, but it was fun to browse. It can be very packed with people and hard to navigate in places due to large crowds. I didn't see any sea lions as the signs advertised.
google avatar

Halei J.

Yelp
This is where I come to get my fresh fish. Salmon, halibut, prawns, sea urchin etc. The best time to come is early morning on the weekends, I've been here on weekdays and not too many sellers open. You can also see the odd sea lion looking for hand outs sometimes. I do stay away from some of the boats that seem to fish everything out of the sea. I've seen some shark, and other endangered speices being sold as well and don't buy from them. Other than that a pretty cool place to go get some fresh fish or walk around the shops or go for lunch at one of the many fish and chips stands/restaurants.

Yelp
Once you've had fresh wild salmon, you won't go back. Steveston Fisherman's Wharf is a nice place to take a stroll, pick up some fresh wild salmon, purchase some souvenirs, or try some local eats. The parking situation is almost horrendous, street parking is ideal if you can find it, but if you can't there are lots where you feed a machine. Of all the souvenir shops I was in, ALL of them were run by Asian shop owners. Not a big surprise since there is a large Asian community around Richmond. There were a few swans by the pier who weren't shy. I saw a family feeding them pieces of their waffle cones, and the swans gladly ate it up! The only thing that irked me about this place was that some of the vendors were smoking on their boats... right next to the wild salmon... yeah didn't purchase salmon from them!
google avatar

Young L.

Yelp
Such A beautiful setting. Straight out of a movie. The wharf isn't very big, but there are soo many shops and vendors packed into the small area. We loved walking on the dock checking out the catches of the day. Great deals on salmon! There were also 4 trumpeter swans? I could be wrong .. Some type of swans were majestically begging for food next to the docks. You can take a nice walk from the wharf to garry point park which has a wonderful view west.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
They sell fresh fish, shrimp, and Uni here. Not too crowded. Many restaurants and ways to enjoy the pier
google avatar

Marje B.

Yelp
Whats not to like?? I love Steveston and on a bustling weekend you can come and buy fresh seafood right on the dock. From tuna, prawns, sea urchins and so much more. The wharf is filled with locals and tourist. On a beautiful day it may be hard to find parking but mostly free 3 hour parking, bonus!! Lots of great restaurants, once your done shopping for some fresh seafood, grab fish & chips sit outside and watch the world go by.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
In one word amazing! I was literally shocked at the seafood prices here. Insanely cheap! At those prices, I'm not sure why anyone would eat anything else. Sushi grade sea urchin were 3/$10. I've honestly never seen sea urchin at those prices before. Whole salmon were $30. Tons and tons of other fish and shrimp available. We were there late afternoon and it was not crowded at all. Definitely worth coming down here. We took the bus and it was quick and easy to get to.
google avatar

Flora C.

Yelp
I need more time to explore here. The waterfront, the restaurants, the shops, the fishing boats. Check out the near by water park, the kids go wild here. =D
google avatar

Kimberlie L.

Yelp
Once upon a time this place was awesome with so much diversity and amazing fresh and freshly flash frozen goodies. Now there are just mostly shrimp sales that arent even spot prawns. Yeah it really does depend on when you go but overall the live fish vendors and the good salmon boats are no longer to be found. Also a lot of the prices have gone up significantly over the years. This place used to be great and now its all a tourist trap. Still nice to stroll around though and look at the water while munching on comfort food goodies.
google avatar

Peter R.

Yelp
A fun place to go on a Sunday.....fresh fish off the boats and fish and chips for lunch.
google avatar

Arlene P.

Yelp
This is a great walking area! You can breeze into various shops to eat coffee, ice cream, healthy, unhealthy, trinkets, souvenirs, you name it! I liked just sitting on the boardwalk, watching the world go by and sunset and more. I came across a place called 'Storybrook' bread and I thought of the show 'Once Upon a Time'. Later I learned from our AVIS car rental manager that Steveson is where 'Once Upon a Time' is filmed :) Check it out if you get a chance and want to unwind.

Yelp
A fantastic place to visit any time of the year, but spring and summer appears to be everyone's favorite time of year. There are so many great reasons go come down to the wharf. It could be just for a morning stroll with a coffee in hand or mission to determine what you will put on the dinner table that evening. Mornings are so relaxing as free parking is easy to get. The wharf provides interesting sights for both young and old. Sometimes you will see a harbor seal roaming about in between the boats looking for free hand outs. If you get hungry ( lunch, dinner, or a snack), there are numerous restaurants by the wharf and a couple of popular eateries even on the water for crab or fish and chips. Best time of the day to go to the wharf for a stroll is morning, noon, and early evening (preferably when it's warm). Overall the wharf ( and surrounding Steveston village) is a great place to take a break from the big city hustle feel for both locals and visitors any day of the week and any time of the day. If you are looking to buy seafood from the fishing vessels then the weekends would be your best bet to come by.

Melissa E.

Yelp
I love this place. But really I love any wharf where there are real fishers, selling fresh or flash frozen fish and seafood. I love the prices, I love the options, I love the fresh air but mostly I love the lack of the middle man. Admittedly I am a bit biased cause I work in fisheries and have loved most things fish-related since I was a kid (including stinky fish markets in Chinatown...LOVE the smell. I know i'm weird). But if you eat seafood, you need to shop straight from the source and TALK to them. They are always keen to chat about their product but also their lifestyle. This is like buying produce straight from the farmer. An essential experience for any Vancouverite and a great place to bring visitors.

Yelp
Great place to take the family This place is a community in its own! Full of history and the local flavor will keep you coming back for more.. Come here if you want to get the freshest in seafood! when i was young, every Saturday, i used to go to the wharf with my dad and walk down the ramp where the boats were and buy their freshest fish or shrimp or whatever they caught that morning. ! oh i loved it. the smell of the air, the creaking of the docks, the sounds of the seagulls *myne myne*. And now im doing the same thing with my daughter! gotta keep the family tradition going ya know?! Every year on july 1 (Canada Day) Steveston holds their annual Salmon Festival! where the whole city gets down and has a great time with Carnival rids a huge parade and food vendors out the ying yang, and deelishious fresh salmon to sample all day long! At Fisherman's wharf, there's always something to do! with tons of restaurants right on the dock, and fun local shops and ice cream parlors, you'll never go hungry or shirtless.. ;) check it out people! especially on a hot summer such as this one...
google avatar

Reena M.

Yelp
Definitely a Vancouver gem! It is less crowded than other Vancouver gems like Granville Island. And they have a lot more fresh seafood available as you can guy it right off the boats. Sometimes, they even have festivals going on with local products and artwork being sold. There were so many things I wanted to buy, but alas, I don't have the space for it all. There are a lot of good local eateries in this area! If you're visiting Vancouver, and it's sunny, this place is not to be missed!
google avatar

Melanie J.

Yelp
Fresh fish right off the boat! What a great place to visit if you're having a hankering for fresh fish. This came as a recommendation for seafood shopping and I'm so glad we came by. Great place to walk around, have a coffee and browse in the shops or look for great deals on fish....
google avatar

Ellen L.

Yelp
It was a nice place to walk around and explore with kids. There were plenty of shops and a small town to check out. The kids enjoyed walking the pier with gelatos and checking out the boats.

Cassie X.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place. It's the perfect place to go when you want a relaxing afternoon in the sun or to visit little artisan shops and boutiques. There's also the delicious food and if you are like me and a fan of seafood, then Steveston is the perfect place to visit. My earliest memories of this place are visiting with my parents and little sister and buying fresh seafood at the Fisherman's Wharf, hosting a birthday celebration at a Greek restaurant here and being reunited with an old friend at Timothy's Frozen Yogurt (mmm....frozen yogurt). That being said I think this is one of those places where you really need to check out on your own. You can appreciate all the little shops and do as much exploring as you want when you're by yourself. Not to mention, walking along the West Dyke Trail with your iPod and a beautiful view is the best way to clear your head.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
Such a nice place to take a stroll on a warm, breezy afternoon. A good supply of boutiques/restaurants/coffee shops/fish&chips nearby, and a very authentic vibe make the Fisherman's Wharf a great spot to be on a lazy Sunday :) Sit on a bench, eat some ice cream, and people watch!
google avatar

Terry T.

Yelp
This place is far, wherever you come from, but it is a very nice one to have a stroll. Not so much there but you can go there in the morning for the seafood market, in the afternoon after a bike ride on the dike or in the evening for the sunset and dinner.
google avatar

Soum S.

Yelp
The Harambe avenging Sea Lions mean business. Don't turn your back on these tough hombres. They're not looking for a hand out or a nibble. They are out to honor their fallen brother. And that means taking you with them.
google avatar

Shila B.

Yelp
Another day of playing tourist in the city. I have been meaning to come here. In fact this was on my bucket list for over 6 years. I am embarrassed to say that as a Vancouverite I never went here until today. Even my mother who isn't really into touristy things has come here on more than one occasion. It's a gem that I'm kicking myself for not doing earlier in my life. Opportunity knocked and I went down with my good girl friend and we just had a girls day out. It's a long trip for me to come down here, however, the shops, the food and general ambiance makes it worth it once in a while. Especially since we have been blessed lately with 3 weeks straight of sunny days, it would've been a sin to miss.
google avatar

M L.

Yelp
This place is perfect for an afternoon stroll. Nothing that you would want to drive to see, unlike the Fisherman's Wharf in SF, but for a lazy afternoon in a nearby town, this place serves the purpose quite well.
google avatar

Lishan L.

Yelp
A great place for tourists with natural shoreline beauty and yummy fish and chips. For the local people, there are also boats selling freshly harvested sea food at good prices. Many good restaurants with local characters. A good selection of coffee shops for you to choose your daily dose of coffee to enjoy while taking a walk to appreciate the air and culture in the little fisherman village. You may even get a bike to bike around. ;)
google avatar

Frank W.

Yelp
this wharf is similar to half moon bay in the state, has quite a few restaurant, coffee shop, bakery, ice cream shop, there is a fishing pier which you can walk out there and buy the fresh seafood right off the boat.

Tiffany W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the fish market. We came to Fisherman's Wharf to take in the scenery and maybe have a meal but i was pleasantly surprised to find that t here was a fish market here! We came on a Sat morning (10am) and strolled around. I really wanted to buy the fresh wild salmon, which is very expensive in CA. THey were selling them at $8/lb but you have to take the whole fish. This was abit challenging considering that I didn'thave kitchen access and didn't have a place reserved yet. We checked out of a homestay. had we known about the fish market i'd definitely would have checked out later. We ended up just buying 2 lbs of the sweet shrimp. We tried a few raw but later in the evening we microwaved it (at a hotel, make do with what you got!) and made some dipping sauce.....would love to return in the future....
google avatar

Moe G.

Yelp
I'm from the USA. I been to a few fish markets but this one was great. The fish market you can purchase off the boats directly. The Fishermen make their prices I think but I found great deals, One boat was selling a baby shark about 18inches for $10. Not bad at all I wish I had a kitchen but was on vacation and couldn't cook. Oh well will return when I can.
google avatar

Sarah U.

Yelp
been here a few times, and its always a nice area to walk around, get some grub and kill time. lots of little shops and local businesses. walk the docs and boats on the water and buy fresh catch, get unique ice cream nearby or fish and chips. peaceful place to visit :) plenty of free parking
